The ongoing strike by the Amalgamated Union of Foodstuff and Cattle Dealers of Nigeria has caused a rise in the prices of animals in Lagos and other Southwestern states.

Recall that the food and cattle dealers had on Thursday embarked on a strike, blocking all ‘borders’ between the North and South in protest for the killings and destruction of properties of Northerners during the Shasa market crisis in Oyo State.

The group demanded N4.7billion as compensation.

Barely five days into the strike, the action has now taken a toll on animal and food prices in the region, especially as many of the markets are nearly empty.

According to a report by the BBC, a ram was on Tuesday sold at N1millon and another at N800,000 at Alaba Rago Market in Lagos State.

Chickens sold for N1,500 have now gone up to N2,500 as a result of the strike which resulted in a shortage of chickens.

Speaking with Muhammadun Dauran Kaji, an Alaba chicken trader, said turkey (Talo-Talo) is now sold for N30,000.

An onion seller, Muhammadu Aminu, said the onion, which sold for N12,000, has now gone up to 30,000 per baskets.

Tomatoes which used to be sold at about N50 are now sold at about N300.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that at the heat of the strike, foodstuff and cattle dealers across the Northern have been diverting their goods and all consumables to the neigbouring countries of Niger Republic and Cameroon.

The striking union had been blocking trade routes to the South by stopping food item-laden trucks from going south.

On Friday, truckloads of food items from the northern part of the country were stopped by the union from entering Kwara State and neighbouring states in the South West.

A video clip showing the illegal stoppage of trucks carrying food items from the North to the South at a Jebba village in Niger State by some northern youths circulated on social media on Friday.

But the Defence Headquarters clarified that following the tension generated by the incident, joint troops comprising the military and other security agencies were deployed to clear the Jebba-Kaduna Road and they had since restored normalcy in the general area.

Must we eat beaf meat? Is it a must

Abeggie! let them go with their cow jor... let's see who blink first!

Can cow eat cow grin

Animal calling cat bush meat!

South is the only source of Hausa/Fulani means of wealth. Blocking foodstuffs and cows from coming south is insulting and if it's play it should stop cos we can farm and reare cow too.

However, we can also reciprocate by blocking products going to north from south.

#WHOBLINKFIRST #TAKEURCOWWETAKEOUROIL...Trend!!! grin

There's nowhere in South west that tomatoes was sold for N50 not to talk of Lagos before their blockade. The least anyone can get is N100

There's nowhere in Lagos where broiler chicken was sold for 1500 even before their blockade. The least is N2000.

There's noway Ram that is locally reared in South West by most rural dwellers will be sold for 1 million, otherwise I will be in Lagos tomorrow with four rams and I will be a millionaire at the end of the day. Rams usually sells for 70k to 200k, atmost the rams shouldn't top 400k by now

The report is full of lies from top to bottom.

Let Northerners continue to decieve themselves. cheesy

At the rundown airport in Kano, food items destined for the south are being stopped
and confiscated by supposedly accredited government officials of the airport! This happens openly and in the full glare of the watching public! It obviously means that the evil, devilish and wicked scorched earth policies of this evil regime to cow the south and force folks to allow killer herdsmen run amock down south has the tarcit support of the rogues at Aso rock! This country is in a major crises, instigated intentionally by the Buhari regime, a regime that will go down in history as the most vile and the most inept on the face of the earth..

Moving forward,. It is now time to open the borders and allow folks to buy foodstuffs from neighboring african states! The government can not close the borders, invest massively in dams and irrigation in the North, then turn around to help northern farmers impose sanctions on the south. We are not going to starve because the fulanis don't want to sell! It's now time to make the importation of beef an open venture. Many countries have beef of better quality and at cheaper prices too! Folks need to protest to be allowed to import the food they need and stop talking about the boycott of beef! Beef is an essential part of a complete diet! And luckily for all humanity, it's not the fulanis that only produces this..?

With the new developments, Southerners will understand the need to make use of the green vegetation given to them.

They have literally condemned all their farm produce, focus only education and not ready to farm.
