This was NOT a criminal case or trial. It was a civil matter. In civil cases, damages are often awarded to compensate the person that suffered as a result of your action. For example, if you promise to marry a lady and she's awarded a scholarship to go and study in Australia and she turns it down because she's going to marry you and you then tell her you're no longer marrying, the court will award damages in her favour against you to compensate her for her loss even though you did not commit a crime. If it was a crime, you would either be sent to prison or asked to pay a FINE (which is different from damages because a fine goes to the government).
