Mrshape:For that level , the answer is 1. That textbook was made for pry school. Pls take it easy. In mathematics, you teach based on level to avoid ambiguity |

Mrshape:Even at jss, the answer is still 1. Js1 is a little extension of pry6 The focus is on method of division at that level, that is dividing both numerator and denominator by common factor Anything beyond that, is outside their syllabus If I am teaching kids "greater than, less than". Solution to 5-6 is "impossible" and not -1 |

Mrshape:If 2x/3x = 2/3 Now solve x/x = 1/1 = 1 A student at that level will use same approach following the examples. Remember that question is not in isolation. It's part of an exercise. That's how proper teaching is done |

Re: This Is Simple JSS1 Work The Math TextBook & Teacher Failed It. Can You Get i? by Mrshape: 7:15am On Mar 07, 2021 |
femi4:What you solved is the ratio which is different from the topic. The topic is simple equation. In simple equation the variable must equal to a numerical value at this jss1 stage. You got x/x=1/1=1 Which is 1/1=1 That is 1=1 Who then have the one when you have when x is no longer in existence. 2x/3x=2/3 The students are taught substitution in this topic too. Don't you think with this solution of yours it will confuse the student that is only 1 he can substitute into that equation? Which is wrong. You are looking at this question as a comparison of one quantity to another (ratio, or simplification of fraction) |

Re: This Is Simple JSS1 Work The Math TextBook & Teacher Failed It. Can You Get i? by sureteeboy(m): 7:31am On Mar 07, 2021 |
Mrshape:It's not out of place if the teacher told them the answer is 1 for simplicity sake, but it's erroneous for the teacher to mark any other answer besides 1 wrong. If a teacher believes any answer besides 1 might look complicated for JSS1 students, and a student there can perfectly explain why he/she chose 2 as the answer, then it's obvious the student is sound enough to understand why the value of x could be any real number not equal to zero. So, saying 1 is the answer is okay from the teacher, but saying 2 isn't correct is very bad |

They is no need arguing over this. The knowledge that is being passed is that of basic mathematical division that says: Any number divided by itself is 1. These can be either positive or negative integers but not 0. As long as the values of both the numerator and denominator are same the answer is 1. This doesn't mean the answer of x=1 by the teacher and the book is wrong because 1/1=1 and also doesn't mean any student with answers other than x=1 should be marked wrong because even -10/-10=1 It solely depends on the application of knowledge and understanding of the teacher and how this is passed on to the students. This is my one cent... |

sureteeboy: Any integer apart from zero will satisfy the equation. But do kids in primary one. Understand the concept of real numbers? I think the teacher should mark it right for any given number written by the students. So far it satisfies the equation. 1 Like 1 Share |

Lordbinsmar:Exactly Boss. Every answer that satisfies the equation should be marked. Even if the student wrote 0.415747256 as answer |

Mrshape: The same law governing numbers will still be in place even if the number is replaced by an alphabet whether you are adding dividing multiplying or subtracting 3×3=3³ and 3÷3=1 2×2=2² and 2÷2=1 1×1=1² and 1÷1=1 X×X=X² and X÷X=1 |

sureteeboy: You are right Sir. Saying that the answer is 1 only is mathematically incorrect and this will confuse the kids more and more. It will also reduce their mathematical aptitude. Mathematics should open up the mind and not enslave it. 1 Like 1 Share |

X is equal to 1 no Matter what calculation you do. X/x=1, Is same as x=x And remember for x isn't a number just a variable so whatever value is x the answer will be equal to 1. This question isn't just a maths problem it's like what we call quantitative reasoning in my time. You calculate based on the scope of examples given and not in general mathematics. |

Lordbinsmar:True. But when that value of x that's positive or negative divides itself what do we get as the result |
Re: This Is Simple JSS1 Work The Math TextBook & Teacher Failed It. Can You Get i? by Lordbinsmar: 6:32pm On Mar 10, 2021 |
ghostcenturion: Any given number divided by it self is equal to 1. The only exception is Zero. |
