The US is only feeling the pinch from losing one of their biggest markets in Africa. Especially when refined petroleum products are banned. If they want to compete in the Nigerian market, they should break Dangote's monopoly by establishing their own refineries in Nigeria...or tomato factories or whatever. Self sufficiency is the way to go. Dangote never stopped anyone from competing with him from within Nigeria. And yes, I fully agree with a tomato paste ban. We are producing enough tomatoes in Nigeria. Let the private sector look into opening more companies to encourage our farmers and paste their tomatoes. 1 Like |

RisenPhoenix1 post=99823828:The emboldened is shameful. Monopoly is dangerous and unhealthy to any economy. Whether or not the US interest is at stake isn't the point. For all we know, Nigeria will fidget and possibly beg of her biggest oil markets get monopolized. Regardless, Dangote is not only harming the economy but also doing lots of damages to other manufacturers in the country. The fact that Dangote Group diversifies almost every minute isn't the point but the fact that an ordinary citizen is always in the business of suggesting bills that will see other businesses ostracised and possibly killed off just so he can remain is insane and disturbing. Dangote is becoming a shark that is feeding on other sharks and rightly so, the country. |

Sanchez01: Are you suggesting that Dangote not open companies in Nigeria because no one else is willing to? It's not his fault if all the other Nigerian entrepreneurs take their wealth to invest outside the country. It is also not his fault if other companies cannot compete with his efficiency. Nor is it his fault if he supports bills that advance his corporate interests. And saying that Dangote harms the economy or other Nigerian based manufacturers makes no sense. How does he do that? Whatever bills are passed that help his business in Nigeria will also help other Nigerian manufacturers obviously. By the way, are we not counting chickens before they hatch? If the government bans certain items that can be produced within Nigeria, it will help Nigerian players to sit up and take advantage. Saying that Dangote will monopolize the situation and the country will have to beg is too shortsighted. When president Obasanjo banned poultry product imports into the country, that is the same sort of rubbish that everyone was claiming; that it was to further his own farm income. Yet, circumstances have shown that it was the right action to take; poultry production and its associated enterprises are now a multimillion naira industry and provide an income source for hundreds of thousands; even though Obasanjo farms did gain from the policy. As long as the government does not ban any other person from building refineries or tomato paste factories, Dangote cannot be said to be monopolizing the industry. Even the Americans should still be able to come into the country and establish a refinery or a tomato paste factory if their intention is good about breaking Dangote's monopoly. No one is stopping them. |

RisenPhoenix1: you obviously do not understand what is going on in this country. When I was growing up, I looked at Dangote as my model in business having achieved all he did but you know what, I don't anymore because I know better. I have been opportune to see some exclusives the government offers him and I wonder why it doesn't reach every other business person in Nigeria. The first shocker I got is that Dangote does not pay for any import duty. Just go and think of this only and ask yourself if you decide to do business if the country will wave off import duty for you cos you're bringing employment to masses |

Sylvaxxl1: How is waiving import duty or any other regulation for a single manufacturer a business tactic; even if true? It would fall under the heading of a government concession; much like the tax holidays given recently to a select group of companies deemed to be of vital interest. Plus I sincerely doubt the veracity of this information. People just pull false news out of nowhere. Anyway, Dangote has been wealthy for decades; through a number of successive governments cutting across many political parties. I find it difficult to believe that they all made specific nationally destructive policies just to favour his own companies. I am not an avid conspiracy theorist. |
