Who remembers the days of "yellow bucket"?

Honestly there's been a lot of improvement in the military but a lot more still has to be done. Areas like situational awareness, communications, protected mobility, superior firepower, intelligence etc etc needs to be improved.
We are slowly transcending into the next phase of the war where the enemy will only be fighting to survive and for significance. The enemy will be scattered and the only goal they will have is to inflict maximum casualties on troops, putting fears into the heart of the locals and so on. Ambush will be very common and once in a while, they will attack towns to kill as many soldiers as possible before they withdraw. They can't keep any town they capture so they will surely withdraw after every battle. The military should be looking at ways to ensure that the terrorists aren't able to operate in villages and communities that they can't protect. These villages have always been the soft spot in this war.
Overall, I believe the insurgency has reached its peak and is about to start its slow but definite descent down the curve. But the big issue is that many of the terrorists will flee to the northwest where there is already disorder to start all over again.

It seems like the curriculum used in training officers is outdated. We might need to send some officers to Iraq and Syria to learn some things. We might need to increase cooperation with countries like Egypt and others fighting insurgency in Africa, even Libya if possible. Several years of US and UK cooperation in this war has done little to nothing for us.

remember i said in this thread few day ago that our men of the special force will be advancing toward island 8 over. they were abmush 65 km to lake chad. the military in a convoy of 12 vehicles 7 mrap 5 tactical. 5 out of the mrap were occupy by men of the special force from 402 and 123.and the rest two were occupy by the infantry. the military could not move fast because of anti tank land mine which they destroy 47 land mine, that slow the movement of the military a car bomb ran into the mrap carrying the special force and discharge, the mrap fell but no solider where killed in the mrap out of that discharge 6 solider in tactical were kiled and 5 wounded and a mrap destroyed. but special force still advanced to lake chad 8 over. may soul of departed rest in peace post=99884308]

OPERATION TURA TAKAIBANGO: COAS COMMEND TROOPS OF SECTOR 2 FOR DISLODGING TERRORISTS IN TIMBUKTU TRIANGLE

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, has commended troops of Sector 2 Operation LAFIYA DOLE for their exploits and achievements in dislodging the Boko Haram insurgents and Islamic States West Africa Province criminals from their claves within the Timbuktu Triangle during the first phase of Operation TURA TAKAIBANGO in the Sector's Area of Operational Responsibility. He made the statement today 14 March 2021 during his maiden familiarization visit to Sector 2 Headquarters in Damaturu the Yobe State capital.

The Chief of Army Staff further stated that he has been briefed on the challenges confronting the troops in the Sector and assured them of his intervention as soon as possible. He also commended their resilience, doggedness and professionalism exhibited since the beginning of Operations. He equally encouraged them not to relent but to build on the successes recorded so far.

In his remarks, the Acting Commander Sector 2 Operation LAFIYA DOLE Brig Gen Adamu Nura while welcoming the Chief of Army Staff assured him that the Sector under his watch will continue to make necessary sacrifices for the betterment of our county and North Eastern Region in particular. He reiterated that Sector 2 will continue to align with the COAS Vision and Command Philosophy.

The Chief of Army Staff was thereafter conducted round to inspect ongoing projects and construction of new barracks for 233 Battalion in Damaturu.

PRESS STATEMENT

The attention of the Office of the National Security Adviser has been drawn to some media reports regarding Armed Forces equipment during an interview with the BBC Hausa service. We would like to State that the NSA was quoted out of context as he did not categorically say that funds meant for arms procurement were missing under the Former Service Chiefs as reported or transcribed by some media outlets from the BBC interview.

During the interview, the National Security Adviser only reiterated the Federal Government’s commitment to deal decisively with insecurity and stated President Muhammadu Buhari’s continued commitment to provide all necessary support to the Armed Forces, including the provision of arms and equipment.

In the interview the National Security Adviser clearly informed the BBC reporter that Mr President has provided enormous resources for arms procurement, but the orders were either inadequate or yet to be delivered and that did not imply that the funds were misappropriated under the former Service Chiefs. The NSA also informed the reporter that, Mr President is following up on the procurement process as is usual with contracts relating to military equipments, in most cases the process involves manufacturing, due diligence and tedious negotiations that may change delivery dates.

As the National Security Adviser conveyed during the Aso Villa Media Briefing, questions relating to Defence procurement should be channelled to the Ministry of Defence. All Security and Intelligence agencies are working together to bring an end to insecurity with the full support of Mr. President and Stakeholders including the media and civil society as part of a whole-of-government and a whole-of-society approach to address our security challenges.

The first one is Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN) while the other is Miyetti Allah Kautal hore. MACBAN has been existing for decades and has always favored dialogue and peaceful resolutions but the other one is the one always saying inflammatory stuffs. Sadly whenever the media is reporting anything on the issue, they just say "miyetti Allah". Not distinguishing between the two. Whether this is deliberate or not, I do not know but it should change to avoid more issues. The kautal hore shouldn't be given media attention even.

Without a formidable police force in place they just might be no Nigeria by next year... Intelligence gathering has gone to the dogs, let's not talk about DSS yet ( these are political morons) they died after 2015, the glorious days of Marilyn Ogar (Spokesperson for DSS) where we saw a vibrant service with reports issued out from time to time on the progress made with BHT and other criminal organisations.

Elements of Boko Haram Terrorists and their Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) counterparts operating along the fringes of the Lake Chad and the Tumbus met their waterloo when they encountered dogged troops of Sector 3 Operation Lafiya Dole on Saturday, 13 March, 2021.

The combined troops of the Sector which were on clearance patrol along the fringes of the Lake Chad had advanced and cleared Daban Massara and Ali Sherifti villages among other settlements before they harbored for replenishment and retrofitting.

However, as they commenced the second phase of their operations and advancing along the Kukawa – Monguno road, about 14 kilometers to their base, they sighted BHTs/ISWAP gun trucks and swiftly commenced pursuit with heavy fire and deft manouver.

A statement by Brigadier Gen Mohammed Yerima, Director of Army Public Relations disclosed that, “In the course of the hot pursuit which was aided by air cover provided by the Air Task Team of Operation Lafia Dole, several terrorists were neutralized and their gun trucks destroyed.

“Unfortunately however, 1 officer and 3 gallant soldiers paid the Supreme sacrifices while those wounded in action are currently receiving medical attention at 7 Division Medical Services and Hospital in Maimalari Cantonment.

“Above is on-the-spot account of the encounter between Nigerian troops and the Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists in Mugono area and environ.

“Members of the public are assured that the troops are on top of the situation and working assiduously to end the insurgency and terrorism in country in line with the directives of the Chief of Army Staff.”

There were strong indications over the weekend that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) may have lost a Commanding Officer (CO) and at least 14 of its gallant troops during an ambush attack by suspected terrorist elements within the Gudumbali general area of Borno State.

Investigation by New Telegraph revealed that the CO was a Major, who gallantly remained a ‘reference point’.

It was gathered that the terrorists, who were said to be of the Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) extraction, suffered worse casualty, with scores reportedly taken out.

Military sources, who spoke in confidence with this newspaper, said the development formed part of the briefings the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Lucky Irabor, alongside other Service Chiefs, received during an operational visit to troops’ location in Borno State, a few days ago.

In the wake of growing insecurity, occasioned by insurgency, banditry, kidnapping, armed robbery, cattle rustling and other violent crimes across parts of the country, President Muhammadu Buhari had given the Service Chiefs a marching order, to “secure” the nation in the next few weeks.

Following the presidential directive, the Service Chiefs, led by Irabor, have continued to undertake operational tours of theatres, in a bid to boost troops’ morale. Speaking on the latest attack, the source said: “I called somebody (an officer on the frontline), who confirmed what happened about three days ago.

“He said the Acting CO, a Major, was involved. That was what he said; he was reportedly killed in ambush. In fact, he (officer) said the late acting CO was his course-mate.”

Meanwhile, another source, who spoke in similar vein, hinted of movement of new equipment to reinforce troops’ operational capability in the North- East theatre. He assured that, regardless of the said attack, the new military heads will make a fundamental difference in the ongoing counter- insurgency operations.

He said: “They have moved in new equipment into the theatre…to enhance ongoing operations. One thing I know is that the new Service Chiefs would want to make an impact, hopefully.”

However, efforts by our correspondent to get the reaction of the Director, Army Public Relations (DAPR), Brig-Gen. Mohammed Yerima, failed, as SMS and WhatsApp messages sent to his phone, were not replied.

Meanwhile, as at the time of filing this report, Yerima only sent a message saying: “I will soon come out with a release please.”

Meanwhile, according to Eons intelligence report, Navy's falcon eye, NIMASA's C4I and NPA's C3I are not yielding any results in maritime security because they are either not operational and/or there is no cooperation among the agencies.

No fewer than 618 schools have remained closed in six northern states over the fear of attack and abduction of pupils and members of staff, according to a tally by THISDAY.

Also, barely three days after the abduction of 39 students of the Federal School of Forestry Mechanisation, Afaka, Kaduna State, security agencies on Saturday rescued 307 pupils of Government Secondary Science School (GSSS) Ikara, Ikara Local Government Area of Kaduna from bandits who attempted to kidnap them from their school.

Security forces also repelled attempts at fresh attack on the senior staff quarters of the Federal Airport Authority (FAAN), Kaduna, where 11 people were abducted about two weeks ago.

The six states where some schools have remained closed are Sokoto, Zamfara, Kano, Katsina, Niger and Yobe.

In Sokoto, the state government has closed all boarding schools along border towns.

The state Commissioner for Security and Career Affairs, Col. Garba Moyi (rtd), said the measure was to avoid the abduction of pupils just as it happened in Katsina, Niger and Zamfara States.

He added that the state Governor, Hon. Aminu Tambuwal, had directed the state commissioner for education to merge those schools with the ones in towns.

According to him, schools affected include those in Sabon Birni, Isa Rabah, Kebbe, Tangaza and Gudu local government areas.

THISDAY gathered that 16 boarding schools were affected.

The Zamfara State Government also closed boarding schools along the border towns after the Jangebe incident.

In a reaction to the abduction of 279 pupils of Government Girls Secondary School in Jangebe, Talata Mafara LGA, Governor Bello Matawalle had shut down 10 schools along the borders with Sokoto and Katsina States.

The state Commissioner for Education, Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi, listed the 10 affected schools as Government Secondary Schools in Zurmi; GSS Birnin Magaji, (boarding) and G.A.S.S Zurmi (boarding); G.G.S.S Moriki (boarding); Science Secondary School Shinkafi (boarding); Science Secondary School, Dansadau (boarding); Science Secondary School, Bukkuyum (boarding); G.D. S. S Nassarawa Mailayi (day); G.D.S.S Gusami (day), and G.D.S.S Gurbin Bore (day).

In Katsina, the state government had initially shut down all its 38 boarding schools after the abduction of 344 pupils of Government Science Secondary School, Kankara.

But the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Badamasi Lawal, later announced the reopening of four out of the 38 boarding schools after a meeting with zonal inspectors of education and permanent secretaries.

He listed the four boarding schools which reopened on March 2 as the Command Secondary School, Faskari; Command Girls Secondary School, Barkiya; Command Secondary School, Musawa and Police Secondary School, Mani.

The commissioner explained that male pupils in the remaining 34 boarding schools should report to the nearest day secondary school in their location to continue with their studies, while female students should remain at home until the security situation in the state improves.

The Kano State Government also closed four tertiary institutions and 12 secondary schools over insecurity in neighbouring states.

The five tertiary schools closed are Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso College of Advance and Remedial Studies, Tudun Wada; School of Environmental Studies, Gwarzo; School of Rural Technology and Entrepreneurship Development (SORTED), Rano and Audu Bako College of Agriculture Development (ABCOAD), Dambatta.

The state government also closed 12 boarding secondary schools on the outskirts of Kano metropolis over increasing abduction of pupils.

The state Commissioner for Education, Mr. Muhammad Sunusi Kiru, said the closure became necessary due to the rising number of abductions of schoolchildren in neighbouring states.

The closed schools are located in Ajingi, Sumaila, Jogana, Kafin Maiyaki and Gaya, among others.

All secondary schools in Niger State have been closed by the state government.

The two-week closure was from March 12.

The Commissioner for Education, Mrs. Hannatu Salihu, said the closure of the schools was to enable the government to make adequate security arrangements to protect the pupils and workers.

In the wake of the abduction of 42 persons from the Government Science College, Kagara, the state government had closed only the boarding schools in Rafi, Mariga, Magama and Shiroro LGAs, which were believed to be prone to bandits’ attacks.

With the closure of all secondary schools in the state, THISDAY gathered that about 496 schools were affected.

The Information Officer of the State Ministry of Education, Alhaji Jibrin Kodo, told THISDAY that 56 boarding schools with two of them mixed are affected while the rest of the schools in the state are day schools.

He declined to state the total number of schools in the state.

The Yobe State government also closed all boarding schools as part of proactive measures to safeguard pupils’ lives.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Dr. Muhammed Idris, who announced the measure, said: “Students from JSS I to SSS II should vacate their schools immediately.

“The closure of the boarding schools is informed by the security concern and the urgent need for government to be proactive in safeguarding the lives of the children”.

The commissioner, however, said all day schools were to continue with their normal academic activities.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), quoted the commissioner as saying that further statements would be made concerning the reopening of the schools as soon as possible.

In this interview with WALE OYEWALE, a youth leader in the community, Ganiyu Omirinde, talks about the ordeals of many years cohabitating with cattle herders

We learnt that you led a team that took a letter to Isikilu Wakili in Kajola weeks before he was arrested by the OPC. Can you confirm this and tell us what the letter is all about?


Yes, I was part of the team that went to Wakili’s camp. The letter was to initiate peace between the rampaging herders and our community. We went as a team that day because of eventualities. The family and the entire community listed me among those who would bear the message, because I know the herders just as much as they know me. We went to their camp to hand them a letter on the fateful day, but they attacked us. That was eight days after Chief Sunday Adeyemo, aka Igboho, went to Igangan following which the Seriki Fulani of Igangan, Fatai Abdulkdri, was sent packing from the community.
We went straight to their camp to hand over the letter to Abu, Wakili’s son. On getting there, we brought out the letter to hand it over to Abu. We were told that he was not around. They gave us an idea of where we could find him, so we traced him to the place. On getting to the place, we didn’t see Abu, so we returned to his place where we first asked after him. We left the letter for him there.


On getting to where we parked the seven motorcycles, which conveyed us, we discovered that the Fulani boys had vandalised them. They swooped on us and started shelling us with pump action guns. We parked seven motorbikes somewhere under the cashew tree, about half a kilometre to Wakili’s camp. They destroyed the tyres and broke the speedometer and other parts.

How did you escape and how did you evacuate the bikes to town from the jungle?

Gunshots were fired at us but we were saved by metaphysical powers. We took to our heels and headed in different directions; some of our people ran to Kajola. We later decided to go and take the bikes from where we left them despite the danger involved. I risked going to our people in the Kajola community. We ferried the damaged motorbikes with a truck.

What necessitated the letter that you took to Abu?

The herdsmen had constituted nuisance to us. They vandalise our farms; they attack and inflict pains our men and rape our women. They beat many with sticks, clubbed many others, while they cut many more with machetes. They destroy property and vandalise farms, and at the end of it all, security agents will release the herders to go free without paying any compensation and without prosecution. They incapacitated us and turned us away from the farm. We became subservient to them and they now turn round to be the ones selling food to us. We have no option but to buy yam, maize and millet from them as they barred us from cultivating our land. We now have nothing.

For us to eat, we go to cafeterias because we don’t have foodstuffs any longer. Ayete was a food basket before. Today in Ayete, you cannot eat N200 worth of amala and get satisfied because it is so expensive. All this is because we have been barred from our farms. We have to drink more water when eating. As we speak, a mini-truck load of cassava tubers is now N300,000, whereas it was N270,000. The problem is that it is very hard to come by.

What effort did the community make to live and relate mutually with the Fulani community?

I told you that when we took the letter to them, we were attacked with guns and clubs. We escaped just narrowly. They are armed with sophisticated weapons and they are very hostile. After our visit, they became more ruthless. They attack and injure our men just as they rape our women. There is no justice anywhere. We can only take the victims to hospitals. Many of the victims of rape are hospitalised for between two and three weeks. Many people sustained permanent injuries. They report incidences of rape and other forms of attack to me. I am usually involved in mediation during crises in Ayete and environs.

What exactly do you want now?

We are appealing to Governor Seyi Makinde to let the Fulani move to their base out of our community. They have their own towns and villages; let them go back so that we have our peace back. We are being pushed too far. When we get to the elastic limit, we will resist the assault. It is the government that we are afraid of and not the Fulani. If we have our way, Fulani herders will have no place in our community anymore. As they terrorise us if we give them equal reaction, will they be able to graze their cattle?

We want an atmosphere of peace where we can live our normal life. We give absolute regards to our governor and that’s why we maintain peace despite all odds. We are conscious of the law, because the law has a long hand that can catch up with anybody. We maintain calm despite the horrible experience because we don’t want to be seen as enemies of the state.

When did this situation start?

We have been contending with the horrible experience for close to 20 years, but it is getting unbearable now. The herdsmen destroy our cassava plantation. It is so sad that they go as far as cutting our cashew trees. They vandalise the cocoa plantation too. They steal bags of cocoa and rice, and they break into shops, including medicine stores. They burn farms down.

How are the people managing going by the scenario you have painted?

The situation is very dicey for most people, because they cultivated their farmlands with loans and now the people are under the burden of huge debts. One of my kinsmen cultivated 70 acres of farmland. He harvested some of the cassava but the herders besieged his farm and attacked him. He narrowly escaped being killed. Barely three years ago, a policeman was sent down to one of the farms that was vandalised for investigation, but he was killed by the herders on the farm. The rest is history; they tied the police officer, popularly called Pastor, and slaughtered him.

You alleged that you were shot at when you and others took a letter to Abu Isikilu; did you or any other member of the team sustain bullet injuries?

Bullet will not get to me. It will deflect from me. I can’t sustain bullet injuries; it’s just that I have since been feeling pain in my skin and I have yet to recover from that ever since.

Perhaps their animals vandalise your farms because you plant crops close to where their camps are located. Is this so?

Personally, I have a farm near the town and far away from their camp. Sadly, they came and vandalised the farm. But one thing that I am sure of is that this is a year of retribution. Everybody, be it the leaders and the led, shall get rewards for their deeds. We are all going to get rewards of our conduct, be it Fulani, Hausa, Ibo or Yoruba, including those in positions of authority. Nobody shall escape the judgment of God. We are all in a serious dilemma, including the governor and the common men. Only God has the ultimate solution.

I have two acres of land far from the town elsewhere. I stopped going there recently when my wife took ill. They have vandalised it. They also uprooted eight trees of cashew there. The cows will lock their horns to the branch of the cashew tree and shake off the cashew, thereby destroying the harvest. The same thing happened last year. I called their attention to it but they were adamant. It will be better for them to leave our midst peacefully than live in an atmosphere of chaos or violence. Sadly, they are stone-hearted and determined to foment trouble.

Apart from reporting to the police, what further peace initiative did you make?

We turned to the court. Wakili told his lawyer that he didn’t want to quit our land. Three years ago, the judge asked us to give him another place to settle. The Ayete community took Wakili to Lajebo for him to settle down. He said it was alright and that he would go back to explain to his elder brother, but he didn’t move.

Did you sell land to him at any time or the other?

He never bought land from us. We didn’t sell land to him. We only acted at that time in accordance with what the judge at the High Court in Igbo Ora said; otherwise, we would have asked him to go back to his place. He has practically taken over our farmlands at Kajola and Dagbere.

When you reminded him that you never sold land to him, what was his reaction?

He would say land belongs to God and not to any man. Then, we asked him that while land belongs to God, is Wakili and his cohorts God’s lieutenant to claim the land being inhabited by other people? We are the people whom God put in charge of the land in this part of the world and we are answerable to God only regarding the land that we inhabit not to the herders.

What will happen when he returns after being released by the police?

We don’t want him back on our land. When released, he should look for elsewhere to settle down; we can no longer welcome Wakili in Ayete/Kajola communities. His cattle now roam about plundering our farmlands. We don’t have anyone to fight our cause or give us justice. The court has failed us.

Is there a police station in Ayete and do you ever lodge complaints there?

There is a police station but it is the complainant who takes the blame and gets locked up here in cases between the natives and the herders. The police take bribes to upturn cases. After locking a complainant up, they will then take N50,000 for bail. That is why we no longer lodge complaints at the station.

As a community, what is your consensus on the issue at hand?

Our consensus as a people is that Governor Seyi Makinde should rise to the occasion about our ordeal with Wakili and other herders in the Ibarapa zone. Ise, Abu and Wakili are nightmares to us in this axis. The government should please let the herders relocate from our community. If we had resisted them since they got to our midst, things wouldn’t have degenerated to this level.


What has the situation been since Sunday when Wakili was arrested by the OPC? Can we say that peace has returned to Ayete and adjoining communities?

We can say we have relative peace because his cronies are still on the farm plundering our crops. You heard when some people called us on the telephone some minutes ago to say that herders had set some farms on fire. The situation at Baba Pupa to Oke-Arinsa and Dagbere, Afuje to Kajola is tense as we speak. Those are no go areas. Now, the government doesn’t want the situation to escalate.
