Why won't the price be high when in a monopoly you can dictate the profit you get in the industry. Monopoly is destructive to the economy and the United States government warned these clowns in government about the damaging effect of monopolies in industries like cement on the common man in the street and local businesses.

Now the government is begging the two monopolists Dangote and Rabiu to bring the price down.

Government can actually fix the price of cement and there is nothing Dangote can do about it.

It happened under Goodluck Jonathan.

It was moved from over N2k to N1,500 flat.

The problem is the people in power without political will or human sympathy.

By weight, over 95 % of materials contained in a bag of cement are sourced in Nigeria, yet when dollar adds value against naira, Mr John Doe will raise price of cement.

It shows that we are not running a free market economy but a monopolistic one.

Where is Nigeria Regulatory Commission when you need them?

Not at all!

Which one is Nigeria Regulatory Commission?
Just stick to your empty noise and buttlicking politicians.
It's obvious you don't know anything about anything about the country.

9jarealist come and explain this one away o. This is what I was talking about. The cement sector is not as "open" as you have been touting it to be and the Government has had significant input (ban on cement importation, pioneer status even when the product is ineligible) into how the current model has turned out to be with Dangote having over 70% market share which is effectively a monopoly. Yet the price is the highest in Africa and does not reflect the affordable pricing objectives the Govt had in mind when they were incentivizing the industry.

There's a reason the consumer protection agency was set up to avoid these kind of exhorbitant pricing situations but curiously they have been silent. In an "open" industry do you think this would have been the case?

Pls don't bring up the buying of shares in dangote PLC ish cos that is an unrealistic way of adddressing the problem. This isn't about Dangote's tribe the way I see it.

Sentiments aside: When government provides cheap electricity so Dangote no longer has to buy diesel for his generators; when the cost of fuel for the trucks that distribute the cement doesn't double every 5 years, maybe the cost of cement will come down. You also know he is servicing dollar debt with a naira that has nearly halved in value since 2015.

Government provided licenses to import, then manufacture cement. Don't blame Dangote for taking advantage of an opening, when most of Nigeria's wealthy chose to keep their money in London and Dubai real estate.

*Electricity is provided cheaply in large economies like USA, Japan, Germany, and China. You can't take on high risk, with high cost of production, and expect lower prices.
