Conjecture. I know people who got their over 500k jobs in Lagos/Port Harcourt/Warri etc while initially living and working in Ibadan. It is simple, you have more time to network in Ibadan if you are ambitious and you get easily noticed if you truly have something to offer - just be smart with your networking. You don't need visa to go to Lagos, it's just next door.

Exactly. I was on a 200k/mth job in Ib before I got a 400k/mth job in a rival company (same industry) in Lagos. From Lagos I got Abuja. I wonder why in this internet age people still believe you need to be physically located somewhere to be apprised of happenings and opportunities in the corporate world.

I was at Transamadi Portharcourt when these young men approached me and started preaching about NeoLife,

I listened intently to them, they said a job was slavery, that it was a temporal solution to a long term problem.

They said Jobs means Just over broke

They were inspiring, they had sweet tongues and almost bought me over.

The point of the story is that, you will never be free working for somebody, Salary is a bribe to forget your own dream.

OP & everybody out there, there's been much talk about career advancement opportunities in Lagos over Ibadan, while this is true, I'd like to use my self as a case study for you.
When I took my last job, I started off as an assistant with a salary of say X pay in Abuja (way below my worth in retrospect), but I was eager after many months of job searching/ disappointments, etc. Less than 3 weeks in I had to cover for a superior who was going on leave. I was new, no experience but I took the challenge as my HOD saw a potential in me, and I couldn't wait to prove him right. Long story short, Exactly two months to my start date, I was posted to one of our branch in Kogi state, on the same salary, a town I knew no one. I had to start over from scratch (granted the company provided relocation stipend, which barely covered house rent and matrass). Before, I digress too far, I was made a manager exactly 9 months 5 days, to my start date, the fastest not only in my department but also company wide.

While in Kogi, I didn't stop developing myself, Exactly 2 years to the date of my first job (1st March), I resumed at a new, bigger and better company back in Abuja with a pay 400% my first take home!.



Moral of all that above is,
Grab on to what you have now especially for a start
Be good at what you do and you'll get noticed
Never stop working on yourself, keep getting that extra edge to set you apart

My brother, I just even decided to be cheerful with figures. I know it wont even be up to that at all. it's a rat race most people live in that city. always thinking and imagining the next day will be better while wasting a whole lot of their lives. Like I said earlier,If you are not in the entertainment industry and some other industries, am sorry,most of them just live the rat race.. Too many people with potentials that can do well elsewhere wasting their life and resources in that city

Lagos is a better deal if you're the ambitious and academically bright type, since you'll be getting more offers down the line if you're good at what you do. If you're the complacent type who wants to take life easy, Ibadan would do since it is a cheaper, easygoing place. Lagos can make you put in your best, but bear in mind that it is also the greed capital of Nigeria. Just as New York is synonymous to greed in US. The main challenge you'll face in the time being in Lagos is the poor salary. You can't afford a decent accommodation since the only decent accommodations in Lagos are in estates and high brow neighborhoods. But if you work hard and keep your eyes open for opportunities, you can land a good job. They're usually competitive, but if you're smart, it's no big deal. Just be ready to beat competitor to it.

You are never safe anytime of the day in Lagos. If guys no corner you for oshodi, aj or ikorodu dem go hit you during traffic and even rob you in brt buses. Night time are even worse anything from 9pm. So calling IB a town is nonsense the only diff btwn Lagos n IB is just money availability

thats what I'm saying. you dont know Ibadan just talking senselessly . if you claim you know ibadan, you shoulf know that theres street light in Iwo road, olodo express, Ibadan ojoo express, challenge, bodija, ringroad and other places like that. with ibadan, there's never a dull moment. there is more traffic in Lagos and More opportunities, but Ibadan is a place to be as well

In this age and time, you can start a side hustle from any location as long as you are connected to the internet.

Living in ibadan will give you a better leverage if you are a self starter.. Moreover, if have or want to acquire soft skills, that will enable to work from anywhere.

Just make sure that, the part of the city you decide to live in gives you access to high speed internet.

I remember during my Executive MBA days in OAU Ife ( 2008-2010), I operated Coaster buses moving my classmates from Lagos to ife.

At the time I lived right in ife and, was able load buses from Lagos.

My pick up/drop off location was a high school in the heart of Ikeja.

Bulk sms was new at the time. An owner of one of the pioneer bulk sms companies came to Campus ( OAU) to advertise to the Executive MBA students. And, I seized that opportunity.

Luckily at the time, I operated an off Campus Cyber Cafe.

I would load the buses right from inside my Cafe at Ile-Ife with the aid of Excel workbooks/the bulk sms platform.

So, other variants can be looked into. Lots of things can be done online.

Currently, I live in New York. I remember, during the pandemic, lots of people/organizations discovered that, people can actually do certain types of jobs from home. Before long, lots of people relocated out of New York City to suburbs. Zoom became the technology of the day for executing meetings of all sorts.

Even, now that the pandemic has taken a turn, it is not likely, that the office setting can fully go back to the pre-covid Era.

There is a new normal wish we should endeavor to take advantage of.

Get soft skills, understand the digital space and explore it.

You don't have to be in Lagos in order to make money in Lagos. Rather be where you can plan your life with whatever little that you have. Determine what value you can add. And again, Ibadan is no more the laid back city it used to be. It has expanded. I know this on a first hand basis.

Suffice to say, after the Executive MBA program, I had lots of job offers in Lagos. Many of my classmates were Executives representing many corporate interests ( National and Multi-National) at the very highest levels ( I was the Class Governor of that particular set). I didn't bulge.
