Why people dislike England is because the hype is too much. OK the reality justified the hype then that would be alright but it never does.

Overpampered prima donnas who can't score a penalty to save their lives, They've already started blaming the argentine ref, rooney getting sent off, the heat, the "diving" portuguese, excuses excuses excuses,

The only way they will win the world cup is to buy it in an auction.

world champions my foot.

I bet France will win the World Cup. Zidane said he had a visitation in middle of the night, a vision telling him to come out of retirement and lead his country to glory, just like Joan of Arc.

Onwards to Glory!

Allez les Bleus, At least the French don't fall apart under pressure!

England were overhyped and rubbish, always have been, always will be

I don't even think they really believed that they would win the world cup. Each time England exit a major football tournament it's always on penalties. Them and their stupid brittle confidence. And yet they paid that snake oil salesman, so called Sven, 35million pounds to take them to 3 quarter finals. I may as well reinvent myself as a football manager and get my own share.

It's a disgrace.

why is everyone so interested in other people's immigration status?

I think that is personal information. What has any of that got to do with the time of day. Pure nosiness.

Career / Re: Should I Return To The UK To Work? (I Have HSMP Visa) by praetor(f): 11:03pm On Jun 28, 2006
Hi,

the visa you talk about (E3) is the investor visa. It's available to everyone but you have to show you have enough money to start a business, have American co-investors, the number of jobs it will generate in the US economy and a track record proving you are a successful entrepreneur in your own country. Apparently $1m minimum.

We are all living in the times of opportunity.

There is a company that sells mismatched socks (socks of different colours for each foot). They are on course to make $10m this year, ridiculous yes but highly profitable.

Read read read and I don't mean textbooks. Subscribe to business mags, observe and see what people are doing, wearing, saying etc. Opportunity is everywhere.

There is a mobile phone company here called Boost that only targets African Americans. The guy that started it is a white Australian, less than 30 years old and no his father isn't a billionaire. He sold it just the other day for millions of dollars. Why doesn't someone start something like that in the UK?
Career / Re: Should I Return To The UK To Work? (I Have HSMP Visa) by praetor(f): 8:28pm On Jun 28, 2006
I agree

In the western world, it is about what you can do and not how many degrees you have. I worked with a guy that had no degrees at all and he was a consultant earning over 1000 pounds a day back in 2000. He was just very good at what he did and made himself indispensible.

Do what nobody else is doing. Keep up to date with what is happening in society and trends. Don't bury your head in the sand. As I keep saying, it is a global war for talent and it is only the people that can deliver that will dictate their own terms.

A lot of employers are looking for people that can develop apps using open source, ruby, AJAX etc, or better still can create funky online video ads, you can make a fortune doing that. There is a lot of money going into online advertising. There have been some good threads here on Google Adsense. You even have companies that are looking for Chief Blogging Officers! Other recommended sites are digitalpoint.com and sitepoint.com. Put your thinking caps on. People are even making money within an online virtual community called Second Life (secondlife.com) Believe anything is possible

I won the green card lottery through my parents ( they are nigerian and so I could apply that way)

Post your resume to american job boards monster.com and get a job with an american firm etc or if you have tons of money, apply for a permit as an investor. You'll get a permit very quickly!

Or apply to a school for a course and get a job here when you are about to graduate.

Unemployment here is quite low and it's relatively straightforward to get work. I don't know what your profession is but use craigslist.org, ajc.com(Atlanta jobs) and just do your research and post your resumes to as many job boards as possible. You could also get a transfer over here if your company is a multinational.

don't be so negative or let the environment discourage you. It's tough but it can be done

Don't forget that the people that are doing very well in business in the UK are Asians and they are non-white. When you are an employee you will always be competing with lots of other people and employers use many different criteria to judge candidates. You shouldn't be discouraged. There are successful black people in the UK, it is just that there are not a large number of them like in the US.

Don't just keep within the nigerian community in the UK either, first what sort of career do you want? There are lots of online forums, e.g. nairaland and others, that you can join and post questions about how to get into your dream career. People are far more willing to help on anonymous forums than they are in person so ask ask ask.

If you don't ask you don't get. That's my motto in life

When I first moved from Nigeria back to England, I happened to stay with one of my parents friends and I told them
that I wanted to work with computers, they said "oh it's difficult blah blah blah" but I refused to listen to them and used each job that I got as a stepping stone to eventually get to my destination (I even got my employers to pay for my training, I didn't pay anything) Eventually landed a job with Morgan Stanley, the only person selected out of 300 people and with a nigerian degree so anything is possible. Have faith in yourself and don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Cheer up!

Jackal,

What do you do in England? It would be interesting to know

Not all Nigerians are able to get well paid jobs. And the ones that can't do the 3 jobs. IT ISN"T EASY, STOP SAYING iT IS cheesy And anyway it depends on what you're going to spend all that money on!

I like your positive attitude, good for you. You go guy/girl?

God, you're tough! Don't be so hard on Nigerians in Britain! I used to be a bit of a hardliner myself but then I mellowed. They are doing their best. We need to encorage each other because it's a dog eat dog world out there.

Well Jackal,

Good for him (the guy that works with BT). I hope I hear many more stories like that.

The UK is a smaller place so competition is fierce. In my opinion, the US is far more meritocratic and is a much larger market therefore you have many more options. The Asians that are the new ruling UK business class realised that if they were going to progrss then they would have to open their open businesses. They have done that with huge success.

I'd like to see more of our people doing that, we have the brains and abilities.

cool
Career / Re: Should I Return To The UK To Work? (I Have HSMP Visa) by praetor(f): 2:32pm On Jun 28, 2006
Jackal,

Maybe you have been looking at a different set of Nigerians.

The ones I met were very hard working, educated professionals. A lot of nigerians have 3 jobs and work constantly, they don't rest. I don't know about the ones in Belmarsh seeing as I have never been inside a prison before cheesy

And what is wrong with Nigerians wanting luxury and being ambitious? As long as they go about it the right way and not do anything illegal. It's important to have goals and know what you want in life and act accordingly.

And to the person that keeps making up stories that the UK is the land of milk and honey, please tell the truth.

We should try and give objective opinions on this board and not dwell on fantasy.

I was born there and lived there for a significant amount of time. I also worked in very good jobs before I left so I know how difficult it is. Most of the black people I saw cleaned the toilets or served the food.

Most of the good jobs are in London and concentrated in the financial sector. Citizens from the new EU countries have also heard about London and into it on a daily basis so competition is extremely fierce and it's an employers market.

Just be aware that you have to be very confident and not take no for an answer. Please stop saying it's a stroll in the park because it is not.
Career / Re: Should I Return To The UK To Work? (I Have HSMP Visa) by praetor(f): 2:09pm On Jun 28, 2006
Whether you accept it or not, there are fewer opportunities in the UK and far more in the US. (See my earlier post as to why)

To the person that said that Nigerians are lazy and would prefer to stack shelves at Tesco, they obviously don't know what they are talking about. Nigerians are very hard working. They make up most of the NHS, social workers and still have a semblance of success despite the system.

I worked in the City and I was typically the only black person on the trading floor (let alone the only nigerian-briton) and that wasn't because I was the only black person in London. Don't forget that you are competing with highly motivated, very intelligent young graduates from the Eastern Bloc countries (new entrants into the EU) so it is very competitive.

I listen to a lot of British radio and a lot of the finance phone-ins are British people emigrating to the States. I'm not saying there are absolutley no opportunities in the UK, you really have to work very very hard.

Try and secure a job, doesn't matter if it means stacking shelves for now. That will give you time to check out the market and see what you want to do.

Good Luck!

if you really are that keen, get a job in a multinational that has offices in the UK. That way they'll pay for your accomodation, relocation expenses etc

Good Luck!

the only thing that you would gain by would be the exchange rate. Dollar is qute weak against pound sterling right now.

Potential market in the US = 300m people, diverse cultures, less regulation, highly entrepreneurial culture, huge country, low cost of living, lots of opportunities

Potential market in the UK = 60m people, diverse cultures, more regulation, not very entrepreneurial, competition from cheap Eastern European workers, work tends to be concentrated in London, high cost of living, not that many opportunities unless you want to teach Maths (shortage of Maths teachers), other fields very competitive.

Even the nursing profession in UK is undegoing drastic change because they are firing all the nurses.

You'd be better off here.

Hello

This person should move back to the UK sharpish, don't waste any more time!

You can always get a job when you are ready to settle permanently in Naija, or at the very worst start your own business. Look at a website called africarecruit.com. It recruits Africans that have foreign degrees to work in Africa.

I read here that someone in the States would do anything to work in England, WHY? shocked

I'm British and have lived and worked there, There is no comparison and loads more opportunities in the USA, I beg!

1. Australia is not in the EU. It's on a seperate continent so EU trade laws don't cover it

2. There is refridgerated transportation to transport perishable foodstuffs long distances. Do your research.

3. There are lots of import/export forums where you can register as a seller of buyers

e.g. alibaba.com . People from all over the world are members and business is done 24/7

4. Get in touch with the Australian embassy in Nigeria and ask them to give you contact info. of Chamber of Commerce over there. You can email them. There are many farmers over there. Get in touch and discus business

This is an opportunity, use it

so if a country doesn't have a McD then it isn't developed? I beg to differ.

This argument can be settled very quickly: All those supporters of McD get your money and start a franchise in Nigeria and then lets see how long you last for.

McD would rather buy a profitable company like tantalisers, with a proven business model, then start from scratch, they don't have the local knowledge and it would not justify the outlay.

Let's bet: If tantilisers( from what I hear) roll out across some choice capitals in Africa and make it a success then probably McD, or some other very large company, will buy them out.

Look at ABC Transport: the owner started it in his youth service and he has now sold a portion of the business to foreign investors for a very good chunk of change. These people aren't stupid.
Business / Re: Starting Mcdonalds In Nigeria by praetor(f): 6:02pm On Jun 18, 2006
look just because McD, Starbucks is in India doesn't mean we should blindly follow eveything they do!

I think the problem with Nigerians is that everything we see abroad is right and everything we have in Nigeria is "bush".

Any right thinking businessperson can take a business model and adapt it to the local environment. The novelty of McD might work for a while and then it will fail like all the other western franchises that have tried to enter the Nigerian market.

Nigerians are as cosmopolitan as anyone else but yo have to study your environment and ask whether people would be prepared to eat hamburgers as much as you want them to. I still say the answer would be no.

sorry!

grin
Business / Re: Starting Mcdonalds In Nigeria by praetor(f): 2:14pm On Jun 18, 2006
With all the money that it would take to start a McD franchise in Nigeria and looking at likely ROI, it would probably be a better idea to start up a Naija version of it and then expand rapidly.

From a franchisor's point of view, you have to pay large % royalty to McD (USA) every month so you can imagine the kind of turnover, and no. of people, you would need to get through those doors every month in order to meet that cost.

If I had $5m, I'd find other forms of investment that would give me excellent return without the obligation of having to pay % every month. There are still opportunities in the Naija food area, we like our food!

Business / Re: Make Money With Bananas (Exportation) by praetor(f): 11:03pm On Jun 17, 2006
the point is there is a shortage over in Australia i.e. demand > supply.

I lived in England and practically all their foodstuff is flown in from abroad. that is the only way they can keep the prices so low so even now as we speak people are doing it.

Where do you think roses in your uk supermarkets come from? Kenya.
