Politics / Nigeria Won’t Progress Because We’ve Reduced Everything To Politics- Pat Utomi by princevee(m): 6:46am On Jul 12, 2016
Prof. Pat Utomi has stated that the overrating of politics by Nigeria and Nigerians will never allow the country to develop.

Speaking during a program on Monday organized under the aegis of the YALI network, Utomi said the Nigerian government needs to encourage entrepreneurs to grow its economy.

“Leaders are not people who tar roads. Any slowpoke can sign a cheque and ask Julius Berger to tar roads. Leadership is about shaping culture so that there is human progress. The kind of value you have as a country determines (your) economic performance. It is the leaders that will initiate those values.

“Everything in our country is reduced to politics. The biggest danger to Nigeria is the overrating of politics and government. I can actually prove with case studies that the government is more responsible for preventing progress in Nigeria than for making it happen. This is not because these men hate Nigeria.

“A man cannot give what he doesn’t have. They are working hard for the good of this country but systematically preventing good from taking place because of their limitations.”

Developed countries like the United States and UK prospered because they encouraged entrepreneurs to grow their economies, hes aid.

“Most countries are not making progress because they don’t have institutional arrangements; they do not make it easier for people with no money, power to emerge with their ideas that will destroy today’s dominant players.”

Politics / Afenifere Blasts Osinbajo Over His Comments On Nigeria’s Restructuring by princevee(m): 6:26am On Jul 12, 2016
Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has been slammed by the Afenifere and a former Governor of the old Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuemeka Ezeife, for criticizing calls for Nigeria’s restructuring.

In a statement by its publicity secretary Yinka Odumakin, Afenifere said Osinbajo’s premise that restructuring won’t make any difference is wrong.

“…we would like to respectfully admonish him to be sure-footed on the subject before he speaks next time.

“He misses the entire debate by engaging in the reductionist argument, narrowing the whole issue to taking more money from the Federal Government to the states. Yes, fiscal federalism is part of the argument but the issue goes beyond the monthly Federal Allocation Committee.”

Restructuring is to make Nigeria go back to true practice of federalism wherein, mineral resources that abound in all states would be freed from the exclusive list so that states would move into prosperity, it added.

Ezeife on the other hand was more direct.

“I am not sure the Vice-President was heard rightly. But if he actually said that, he cannot be right. Does he want to join President (Muhammadu) Buhari against the whole country?” Ezeife queried.

According to him, restructuring won’t tear the country apart but will reduce the cost of governance. He said Nigeria should return to the six(three) regional structures or 12 regional units.

“There have been agitations from the North, the South and even the Middle Belt are all clamouring for restructuring,” he said. “Restructuring is an idea in which Nigerians have agreed is the solution to the problems posed by our dysfunctional federalism. All are clamouring for restructuring; so Osinbajo cannot be right.”

Sports / FC Barcelona Reacts To Lionel Messi’s 21 Months Jail Term by princevee(m): 8:12am On Jul 07, 2016
Spanish club Barcelona has reacted to the Wednesday verdict subjecting Lionel Messi to 21 months jail term.

The court of Catalonia on Wednesday found that the Messis had evaded tax on Lionel’s image rights, with more than €4m owed in back payments.

“FC Barcelona gives all its support to Leo Messi and his father with relation to the sentence for tax evasion handed out by the Provincial Court in Barcelona today,” read a statement from the Spanish champions.

“The Club, in agreement with the Government prosecution service, considers that the player, who has corrected his position with the Spanish Tax Office, is in no way criminally responsible with regards to the facts underlined in this case.

“FC Barcelona continues to be at the disposal of Leo Messi and his family to support him in whatever action he decides to take in defence of his honesty and his legal interests.”

The conviction is unlikely to hinder Messi’s football career, however, with the 29-year-old now free to attend Barcelona’s first day of pre-season training next week.

Business / CBN Advises Nigerians Against Panic Withdrawals, Says Banks Are Not In Distress by princevee(m): 7:39am On Jul 07, 2016
The Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, has advised the public against panic withdrawals, assuring that commercial banks in the country are safe.

There had been widespread fears that Nigerian banks are in distress after CBN took over Skye bank.

However, Acting Director of Communications at the CBN, Isaac Okoroafor, in a statement said the 22 commercial banks are not in distress.

“Neither Skye Bank nor any other bank in the industry is in distress. Therefore, the CBN would like to request the general public to ignore speculations or rumours to the contrary as they could only be the handiwork of mischief makers who do not mean well for the Nigerian banking system and its economy,” he said.

“We therefore urge the banking public to remain calm and go about their normal businesses without panic. It is important that we do not create problems when none exists,” he said.

Politics / PENGASSAN Embarks On Nationwide Strike, Vows To Shut Down Oil Sector by princevee(m): 7:04am On Jul 07, 2016
The planned nationwide strike of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) will begin on Thursday, the body announced yesterday.

PENGASSAN spokesman, Emmanuel Ojugbana, said chairmen and secretaries in its four zones and branches have concluded plans to ensure a complete shutdown of the country’s oil and gas industry operations and activities.

He said a final meeting was held on Wednesday, in which “the method of the gradual shutdown of the industry was critically examined and adopted by the members. The action, which will cripple all activities and operations in the oil and gas sector, will affect all the sub-sectors.”

“Our members in the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA), Petroleum Equalisation Fund (Monitoring Board) PEF (MB), Pipelines and Products Marketing Company (PPMC), National Petroleum Investment Management Services (NAPIMS), oil majors, labour and contract services companies, and petroleum products marketing companies will join in the action,” Mr Ojugbana said.

Among other things, PENGASSAN wants FG to address the poor state of the country’s refineries and the massive waste of resources on turn around maintenance (TAM); continued importation of petroleum products; on-going industry reforms and NNPC restructuring as well as the politicisation of the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB).

Politics / Nigeria’s Unity Not Negotiable – President Buhari To Niger Delta Avengers by princevee(m): 11:09pm On Jul 06, 2016
President Mohammadu Buhari has stated that Nigeria’s unity is not negotiable.

He also warned looters of the public treasures to return their loots as a condition for their personal peace.

The President gave the warning while receiving a cross section of Nigerians most whom were Muslims who were in his residence within the precinct of the presidential villa to pay him sallah homage on Wednesday.

The President who recalled the famous quotes of former Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon said that the task of keeping Nigeria as one indivisible entity was a task that must be done.

He said: “We have to concentrate on the militants to try to know how many of them in terms of groupings, try to get in touch with their leadership, to try to persuade them to please give Nigeria a chance.

“I assure them that when we were very junior officers, we were told by our leaders, by the Head of State which was Gen. Gowon that to keep Nigeria one is a task that must be done…we never thought of oil. What we were after is one Nigeria. Please, pass the message to the militants that one Nigeria is not negotiable. And I pray they better accept it. The constitution is very clear…I assure them there would justice.

“And please persuade those who have plenty of money that does not belong to them to try and negotiate, return it in peace so that both them and us will be in peace otherwise we will continue to request”.

Religion / ‘we Should Apologise To Gays, Women And Exploited Children’ – Pope Francis by princevee(m): 2:59pm On Jun 27, 2016
Asked by a journalist about a comment made by a German Cardinal who had said that the church ought to apologize for its negative atittude to gays.

He was also quried if the church bears any responsibility in the hate expressed on LGBT community as evidenced in the Orlando massacre where 49 persons were killed.
“I will repeat what I said on my first trip. I repeat what the Catechism of the Catholic Church says: that they must not be discriminated against, that they must be respected and accompanied pastorally.”
“One can condemn, but not for theological reasons, but for reasons of political behavior…Certain manifestations are a bit too offensive for others, no? … But these are things that have nothing to do with the problem.”

“The problem is a person that has a condition, that has good will and who seeks God, who are we to judge? And we must accompany them well…this is what the catechism says, a clear catechism.”

“Then there are traditions in some countries, in some cultures that have a different mentality on this problem. I think that the Church must not only ask forgiveness – like that “Marxist Cardinal” said (laughs) – must not only ask forgiveness to the gay person who is offended.”

“But she must ask forgiveness to the poor too, to women who are exploited, to children who are exploited for labor. She must ask forgiveness for having blessed so many weapons. The Church must ask forgiveness for not behaving many times – when I say the Church, I mean Christians.”

Politics / How 6 Girls Were Turned To Sex Slaves In Abuja by princevee(m): 2:30pm On Jun 27, 2016
28-year-old Ifeoma Daniel has been arrested alongside her partner-in-crime, Collins Madueke, for allegedly engaging six girls in sex trade in Abuja.

The six girls – Chidinma Amakwe, Blessing John, Nancy Azubuike, Chiamaka Eze, Amarachi Chinedu and Beauty Ndulue – between the ages of 19 to 22 were found and rescued on Friday by the police and handed over to officials related to their case.

According to reports, the girls told the police that they were wooed to Abuja to become commercial sex workers with a promise of N200,000 after six months.

Daniel agreed to the allegations via a confessional statement saying, “I have two children, Akunnaya and Charity. I divorced my husband three years ago because he always beat me. I went into commercial sex work as a means of survival. I started the work in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. I was told commercial sex was more lucrative in Abuja, so I relocated here in 2015.”

“I operated in the Apo area. I thought I could make more money by recruiting some girls to work for me. I brought the girls and the agreement was that I would pay them N100, 000 after six months. I also promised to take care of their feeding.”

“I brought only two of the girls – Chinedu and John. The other girls were brought by two women known as Mama Cynthia and Azonto.”

Madueke on the other hand denied having any form of involvement in the case, “I worked as a hairdresser. In the first week of June, I was in my shop when Chinedu (one of the girls) approached me saying she wanted to learn hairdressing. The following day, she came back with four other girls and they all said they wanted to learn as well. I know them as apprentices.”

Sports / Chile Wins 2nd Straight Copa America As Messi Misses In Penalty Kicks by princevee(m): 8:04am On Jun 27, 2016
Chile wins Copa America after downing Argentina on penalty kicks for the second consecutive year.

Chile becomes the first team to repeat as Copa America champion since Argentina in 1946-47. It’s more heartbreak for Argentina and Messi, as they lose in a major final for the third consecutive year.

Chile made it back-to-back Copa America titles after seeing off South American rivals Argentina 4-2 in a penalty shootout in Sunday’s ill-tempered final.

Both Argentina and Chile were reduced to 10 men in a fiery first half in a rematch of last year’s decider, as Marcos Rojo and Marcelo Diaz saw red, and neither team could break the deadlock after 120 minutes of play in front of more than 82,000 fans at MetLife Stadium.

And for the second successive year, a shootout was required to determine a winner, with Chile coming out on top again following spot-kicks as Argentina’s 23-year wait for a major trophy continued.

http://www.veenaija.com/chile-wins-2nd-straight-copa-america-messi-misses-penalty-kicks/#.V3DPtjUfhQI

After captain and goalkeeper Claudio Bravo denied Sergio Aguero with a stunning finger-tip save in extra time, he was at it again in the shootout, keeping out Lucas Biglia’s effort following Lionel Messi’s skied shot over the bar as Francisco Silva stepped up and converted the winning penalty.

The 4-2 shoot-out loss marked a third consecutive defeat in a final for Argentina, beaten last year as well as the 2014 World Cup.

The Chairman, Senate Committee on Health, Dr. Lanre Tejuoso, on Saturday, said the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) mismanagement of the health sector caused President Muhammadu Buhari to seek medical treatment abroad for his ear infection.

The Senator, who represents Ogun Central Senatorial District, stated this while presenting empowerment materials to members of his constituency.

While saying that ruling All Progressive Congress had inherited a rotten system, the Senator noted that the PDP’s years of leadership destroyed the health sector

“Do you know the party of the President? It’s All Progressives Congress. Do you know the party that ruled for 16 years? It is PDP. We have just taken over. We inherited a rotten health sector; our budget is just about to start.”

Romance / Relationship Traps Couples Should Avoid At All Costs by princevee(m): 1:39am On Jun 26, 2016
Happy, successful couples understand that BOTH states of being are a normal and necessary part of nurturing a long-term relationship. To help reduce the amount of struggle, they know that an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.

As such, they mindfully keep their relationship on track by avoiding the following six traps that lead to relationship disaster:

1. They don’t break trust.

The ability to trust each other is the single most prominent predictor of relationship success. Trust is measured in ways such as: “Can I trust [my partner] to be here for me, listen to me, choose me first over others, take care of the family, help with the children, be faithful and respectful to me? Untrusting relationships actually negatively affect physical health.
Successful couples know how essential trust is to the health and happiness of their relationship, and so they do not break trust with each other.

2. They don’t let their anger get out of control.

While anger is a natural human emotion that warrants healthy expression, successful couples figure out how to avoid explosive, hurtful blowups. They also don’t hold grudges. In relationships where one or both parties is highly critical, maintain contempt for their partner, and act overly defensive and/or continually stonewall the other; there is high likelihood of the marriage failing if there is no change.
Successful couples develop skills to channel their anger toward solving the problem rather than aiming it at each other through attacks or withdrawing.

3. They don’t avoid difficult decisions or conversations.

Romance / 12 Things That Are More Harmful Than Cheating by princevee(m): 1:05am On Jun 26, 2016
Cheating is definitely one quick, big way to absolutely annihilate a relationship, but as a recent Ask Reddit thread pointed out, there are plenty of other things that are much more potent when it comes to ruining even the strongest of bonds. Some of the worst things that lead to a breakup (that aren’t cheating) start out small and indiscernible, and that’s what makes them so dangerous.

1. Lying to and hiding things from your partner. Even if you’re doing it out of love to protect their feelings, keeping little things from someone you’re dating can grow into a big problem and cause trust issues that wreck a relationship. As canada432 wrote, “You should be able to tell your partner pretty much anything. If you’re hiding something because it would hurt them, then you probably shouldn’t do that thing in the first place.”

2. Withholding any kind of affection. Whether affection means being really touchy-feely, asking each other intense questions about meaningful things, or helping each other through obstacles, being absent and unaffectionate can cause the kind of doubts in a relationship that end up being irreparable.

3. Harbouring quiet resentment. As VoxMeretricis wrote, “by the time resentment is expressed, the damage is already done” to the relationship. It starts out quietly but becomes something big over time, which is what makes it so damaging.

4. Lack of communication. This doesn’t mean not texting all day every day, but failing to talk to each other about things that bother you when they come up, or conveniently leaving out details that you think might cause problems. All that shit just gets bottled up or revealed eventually, and by the time that happens, it’s usually unmanageable.

5. Being stubborn about things or getting entrenched in certain positions. This is just another way of saying “refusing to compromise.” If you like somebody, you should be willing to compromise. Partners who can only handle things if they go a certain way (their way) are basically just in relationships with themselves.

6. Bickering about mundane, daily issues and chores. Sure, the argument you always have about whose turn it is to take the trash out seems like no big deal now, but that’s the sort of thing that just becomes a great issue over time, and even worse, becomes ammo for bigger, more serious arguments down the road.

7. Condescension. Talking down to a partner is just another way of making yourself bigger or more powerful than them, and a power imbalance is the last thing you want in a lasting, healthy relationship. As messedfrombirth wrote, condescension is worse than cheating because “it makes your self esteem shit,” so even after the relationship ends, you still feel the damage.
