Senate President Bukola Saraki, Senators Dino Melaye and Ben Murray-Bruce have a bone to pick with the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris.

They have dragged the IG to court over their invitation by the Nigeria Police.

Saraki, Melaye and Murray-Bruce were among the three leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party who held a protest march to the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission and the Force Headquarters in Abuja on Friday to protest against the outcome of the Osun State governorship election.

The Police had invited only Melaye and Murray-Bruce to appear before the Federal Capital Territory Command over alleged assaults on its men and destruction of its property.

The lawmakers, however, failed to respond to the invitation. Instead, they had sued the IG and the Commissioner of Police, FCT Command, praying the court to, among others, direct the defendants to “jointly and severally pay the applicants the sum of N500m, being the pecuniary and exemplary damages arising from the humiliation, intimidation, harassment and unlawful attempt to arrest the applicants by the agents of the second respondent (Commissioner of Police).”

No fewer than 7,000 delegates will ratify on Saturday, President Muhammadu Buhari’s nomination as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in next February’s election.
Gov. Kashim Shettima of Borno and Deputy Chairman of the APC Presidential Convention Planning Committee said the delegates will converge at the Eagle Square, Abuja for the ratification.
Shettima made this known while briefing newsmen on the party’s preparations ahead of the convention.
The delegates are drawn from the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Shettima said.
He disclosed that the convention committee on security was working closely with security agencies to ensure a hitch-free exercise.
Shettima, who said that the convention would commence at 2.00 p.m, added that its transport committee was making arrangements to reduce to the barest minimum, inconveniences it might cause Abuja residents.
“We moved the convention time from 9.00 a.m to 2.00 p.m deliberately to accommodate delegates that are coming from far and near.
“Incidentally, people from Kogi for instance, can leave and be in Abuja within three hours, but believe me, all our delegates will be on ground by 2.00 p.m,” he said.
Shettima stressed that the presidential convention was to ratify the nomination of President Buhari as the APC presidential candidate for the 2019 election.
“Let me assure you that the nomination and ratification of the candidacy of President Buhari is a commitment to service, progress and quality change.
“The convention is a special one for the emergence of our presidential flag bearer; no other issue will be tabled.
“In subsequent conventions, and the National Working Committee (NWC) and National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings, other issues can be discussed and sorted out,” he said.
The committee deputy chairman, while speaking on the challenges that followed the party’s primaries in some states of the federation, said the NWC was working round the clock to ensure that the issues were amicably resolved..
“Despite some of the problems we have encountered during the primaries in our various states, the NWC is working assiduously to resolve all the issues.
“It is a family quarrel, and we are going to sort things out amicably,” he said.
Shettima added that votes cast for President Buhari during the party’s recent presidential primaries held across the federation and the FCT would be revealed at the convention.
The APC Expression of Interest and Nomination forms were purchased for President Buhari by the Nigeria Consolidation Ambassadors’ Network on Sept. 5, at the cost of 45 million.
Buhari had in April declared his intention to seek re-election at the APC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
The President, who is the APC sole presidential aspirant, while submitting the forms, on Sept. 12, said; “I am taking this step with all humility, sense of responsibility and unquestionable desire to serve and protect the interest of all Nigerians.
“Let me today, appeal to party members not to be complacent but to prepare, strategize and win 2019 elections.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured Nigeria’s Teachers that his heart is with them over the issue of unpaid salaries, assuring that unpaid salaries would soon become an issue of the past.
The President’s Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Malam Garba Shehu, in a statement in Abuja on Friday, said Buhari gave the assurance in a message to this year’s World Teachers’ Day.
The President disclosed that he was aware that in some states and local councils of the federation, teachers were being owed salaries of several months.
He revealed that it was specifically to mitigate the situation of unpaid teachers and pensioners that his administration doled out billions of naira as bailout funds to various states.
“Sadly, the issue of unpaid salaries remains,’’ he lamented.
Buhari, however, assured that the Federal Government would continue to work with the state governments to ensure that “all salary arrears are not just cleared, but that unpaid salaries become an issue of the past.’’

The President used the opportunity of this year’s World Teachers’ Day to express his appreciation to all Nigeria’s teachers, “the usually unsung heroes of our country whose skill and commitment daily mould the minds of our country’s youth, our leaders of today and tomorrow.’’
While highlighting some of the measures put in place by his administration to improve education and better the welfare of teachers, Buhari regretted as “grave and unfortunate” that the country’s teachers were often treated unfairly despite their essential services.

According to him, Teachers are the most important segment of workers in the country, invaluable for the essential work they do towards building the country’s future.
He said: “Teaching is a noble profession, wielding a strong influence by inspiring and educating our children. The values they inculcate stay with them for a lifetime.’’

President Muhammadu Buhari, on Thursday, said the anti-corruption war of his administration was not negotiable.



He said it was a must for him to fight graft because that was one of the reasons he was elected.



According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr Femi Adesina, the President spoke while receiving a former South African President, Thabo Mbeki, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.







Mbeki, who heads the African Union High-Level Panel on Illicit Flows from Africa, was in Nigeria to give Buhari, who is the current champion of AU Anti-Corruption Campaign, some updates.



The President said since his electoral promises to Nigerians included fighting corruption, he could not afford to let the people down.



He said, “For this administration, fighting corruption is non-negotiable. It is a must.



“We must fight corruption frontally because it’s one of the reasons we got elected.



“We campaigned on three fundamental issues: security, reviving the economy, and fight against corruption. It’s the reason we got elected, and we can’t afford to let our people down.”



Noting that the government was making progress on the anti-corruption war, “and not just talking,” the President said he was very pleased with the assignment the former South African President was carrying out for the African continent.



He submitted that when Africa was vigorous with the war against corruption, “we will eventually appeal to the conscience of the rest of the world.”



In his remarks, Mbeki said corruption was an African challenge that must be responded to, “as development challenges can only be met through the check of illicit financial flows.”







He said he was delighted that Buhari touched on the issue in most of his speeches, with the most recent being at the United Nations General Assembly last week.



“We are pleased with the way you take up the matter. Countries need the political will to stop the illicit flow. Nigeria has shown a good example.



“The more we are showing that we are acting as Africans, the easier to get the rest of the world to cooperate,” Mbeki said.

Fresh reports from the Delta State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) led by Cyril Abeye Ogodo indicates that the party has expelled Ovie Omo-Agege, the senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly and factional senatorial candidate in the 2019 general election.



Rising from an emergency meeting of the State Working Committee (SWC ) in Asaba on Wednesday, the party said its decision to expel Omo Agege from the party followed his “unabated involvement in anti-party activities”.



A statement titled ‘Delta APC Expels Senator Ovie Omo-Agege’, signed by the party’s Legal Adviser, Dennis Nwanokwai Esq, and obtained by SaharaReporters, noted that the senator’s expulsion is with immediate effect.



"The latest of such activities relates to the hijack of primaries panel members and materials sent from the national secretariat to conduct primaries in the state and deploying same to conduct unauthorised parallel primaries.



Others are the manipulation and tampering of delegates’ lists and the use of thugs to harass and deprive authentic delegates from access to primaries venues, all that in conjunction with Prophet Jones Erue and others who have earlier been expelled from our party.



The expulsion of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege is with immediate effect. The SWC also resolved to petition the security services, including the Police and DSS to arrest and prosecute Senator Omo-Agege, Prophet Jones Erue and others for impersonation and others actions calculated to breach public peace” the party stated.



It was however learned that the Ogboru/Omo-Agege faction of the APC led by Jones Erue had also slammed the state leader of the party and the 2015 Delta State governorship candidate of the party, and the party's senatorial candidate in the 2019 general elections, O'tega Emerhor, with expulsion over same offence for which Omo-Agege was thrown out of the party.

Dr. Emmanuel Eweta Uduaghan, the immediate past governor of Delta State has said that after the primaries, ‘there’ll be no faction in Delta state’s All Progressives Congress (APC) saying that all of us will be one by God’s grace.



He also said that he will win the 2019 Senatorial seat for Delta South Senatorial District



Uduaghan He made this known after he was declared the party’s Senatorial candidate for Delta South Senatorial District by the primary election panel led by Major General Lawrence Onoja (Rtd).



The affirmation was held on Wednesday at the Civic Centre in Oleh, headquarters of Isoko South Local Government Area of Delta State.



Co-contestants with Dr. Uduaghan, Chief Michael Johnny, Air Vice Marshall Henry Okorodudu and two others were screened out by the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC in Abuja, leaving the former governor as sole candidate.



Speaking after his affirmation, Dr Uduaghan expressed appreciation for the confidence reposed in him.



Uduaghan assured delegates and members of the Senatorial district of good representation, while also promising to unite the two factions of the party in the state.



“I’m happy about the affirmation. I was ready for it. When the final report came up, I was cleared and I’m happy for affirmation.



“Be assured of quality representation. By God’s grace, I’ll win the election. You know that in Delta, APC has never won any election. We need to come together in other to win.



“I’m going to bring everybody together by God’s grace. After the primaries, there’ll be no faction, all of us will be one.” Uduaghan said.

The Federal Ministry of Education on Wednesday said there was no plan to increase the tuition to N350, 000 per session as claimed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, noting that the establishment of an Education Bank was already in the pipeline.


The Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Mr Sonny Echono, stated this in Abuja while reacting to the allegations by the ASUU, noting that the re-establishment of the Education Bank was to provide students with loans and other resources through a public-private partnership.



Echono, who spoke at a World Teachers’ Day Symposium, said teachers that did not have the requisite qualifications would be flushed out of the system by 2020.


Recall that it was reported on Wednesday that the ASUU Ibadan Zonal Coordinator, Dr Ade Adejumo, raised the alarm on the Federal Government’s planned increment in fees, saying the planned increment led to the collapse of the 2017/2018 renegotiation of the 2009 Federal Government/ASUU agreement.


But the Permanent Secretary denied that the government had any such plan.


Echono said, “The Federal Government did not and has no intention of introducing tuition fees in our universities, not to even mention the figure of N350, 000. This can easily be verified. The students have just registered for school and their parents are aware of how much they paid.


“What is true is that because of the commitment of the present administration to guarantee the right of the Nigerian children not only to education, but to be positively engaged, the President directed that the ministry, along with the Ministry of Finance, should jointly organise a workshop that will come up with sustainable and very workable recommendation on funding education in Nigeria.”


In a related development, the Academic Staff Union of University, Kano zone, on Wednesday, rejected plans by the Babalakin-led Federal Government negotiating team, to introduce the payment of tuition fee in the Nigerian Universities of about N350,000, just as it also supported the call by the Nigerian Labour Congress for a new minimum wage.

Interesting days are ahead, as more dramas are likely to unfold after the primary election of the All Progressives Congress (APC) appeared to have struck a chord of division in the ruling party.

Against the declaration of the National Working Committee (NWC)of the All Progressives Congress (APC), a winner has emerged in the Lagos governorship primary election.

Mr Babjide Sanwo-Olu was declared winner Tuesday with a wide margin.

It was like a kingdom divided against itself for some Lagos residents who had thought it was over with the election after the NWC declared it illegal and without credibility.

Fake election materials were used, the NWC claimed, but the APC in Lagos was on a cruise drive with the process to the letter.

After collating and announcing the result, with Mr Sanwo-Olu polling 970,851 while Governor Akinwunmi Ambode got 72,901 votes, the chairman of the APC in Lagos, Mr Tunde Balogun, said the people had spoken.

He then gave reasons it was necessary to announce the result of the primary that had been dubbed illegal.

“For me, as a party chairman, to see a vast number of people to come out and vote and then say that no primary took place will be to cast shame to the party and its leadership, this I shall not do.

“The party faithful have spoken, and it is their voice that is paramount.

“The Lagos chapter of APC is committed to honouring their choice.

"Their decision must stand as the true expression of APC in Lagos.

"To embark on any other course will be to betray our members, state and the core principle of progress and democracy upon which the APC is founded”.

He then highlighted that the NWC members that had cancelled the election were in direct opposition to the spirit of democracy.

"Those persons who now claim this election did not take place stand in direct opposition to the spirit of democracy and the express will of APC members in Lagos state.




"Such a move is also at variance with the President's strict adherence to the principle of transparency, openness and participatory democracy,” he added.

Lagos residents will have to wait and see where the entire drama will lead to.

With the result announced, the incumbent Governor becomes the first Governor of Lagos State to lose a second term bid since 1999.

Thanks to its very attractive leather-based design, the company has managed to create an elegant, premium feeling and, oh yeah, pleasant-smelling notebook computer that also incorporates an intriguing new take on convertible designs.



Rather than simply wrapping a notebook in leather, HP has actually built the Spectre Folio into the leather casing in a way that makes it an integral part of the device. The end result on the outside is a device that has the smooth, wonderfully tactile sensation that leather provides on quality briefcases, handbags, portfolios, and other non-tech products.



Inside, however, is a fan-less, 0.6” thin PC design—driven in part by the non-porous nature of leather—that still manages to incorporate Intel’s new 8th generation Amber Lake 5-watt Y-Series CPU designs (both i5 and i7 versions are available), 802.11ac WiFi, up to 18 hours of battery life, a 13.3” 400-nit display, and an option for a 4K screen. It’s a tremendous mashup of both old-world craftmanship and cutting-edge technology. At a starting price of $1,299, it’s not a cheap offering, but it’s in the range of what you’d expect to pay for a premium device.

Another interesting aspect of the convertible design on the Spectre Folio is the ability to pivot the bottom of the screen forward into a tent mode that’s much easier to do than on typical, hinge-based designs (and doesn’t require the screen-switching hassle, either). So, if you want to watch a movie on a plane, or present slides to someone nearby, you can easily do so, and still leverage the touchpad, which is actually a nice detail of the design. Like many convertibles, the Spectre Folio also ships standard with a cordless pen with 4,096 points of pressure. One additional convenience, however, is that it fits neatly into the pen loop built into the side of the leather casing, making it less likely (at least theoretically!) to be lost.



In addition to its luxurious design, the Spectre Folio offers another intriguing connectivity option: an Intel-built LTE modem offering up to 1 Gigabit download speeds. Of course, with the Always Connected PC initiative, Qualcomm has been banging the drum of cellular connected PCs for a while now, and PC companies have offered integrated modems for years. Despite both these efforts, attach rates for LTE-equipped PCs have remained very low, due in part to the additional cost of a monthly data plan, as well as the ease of using integrated hotspot capability in today’s smartphones.





While none of these issues are completely going away with the Spectre Folio—though HP and Intel announced a special deal with Sprint that offers free cellular service for 6 months when you purchase one—another issue is starting to become a bigger concern: security. With the rising awareness of the potential vulnerabilities in public WiFi networks, many individuals and businesses are started to reconsider their connectivity choices and looking seriously at the private, single device connections offered by LTE cellular networks. I certainly don’t expect to see a massive shift occur anytime soon, but if there’s anything that’s going to make integrated LTE a more attractive option to some, it’s security that could start to shift the tide.

One nice detail of the Spectre Folio LTE implementation is that it includes both support for a physical SIM card and an eSIM. Many US carriers have been somewhat reluctant to support eSIMs in the past because of the potential ease of switching between carriers (they enable “digital” switching instead of having to get a new SIM). However, now that Apple added eSIM support in their latest line of iPhones, the tide of carrier support for them is already starting to change.



The new HP offering represents an intriguing new option for the premium PC market. While it’s easy to write off the leather-wrapped design as little more than a gimmick, the ability to bring an appealing physical experience to a quality digital experience is likely something that many demanding PC users are going to find attractive. I also wouldn’t be surprised to see it inspire a raft of competitors that offer similar physical advancements—especially given the overall device experience focus that so many PC companies now have. Given the more evolutionary advancements now occurring in PC technology, it just makes sense to bring new tactile improvements to our everyday computing.

So, the “Common Sense” Senator, Ben Murray Bruce, won’t be returning to the red chambers come 2019.

This became public knowledge on Monday after he announced his withdrawal from the race to seek a second term as the senator representing Bayelsa East in the 2019 election.

According to Cable, Bruce made this known in a letter he wrote to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Monday, the eve of the senatorial primary election of PDP in the state.

Bruce attributed his withdrawal from the race to the need to allow someone else from the constituency fly the banner of the PDP in 2019.

But the media mogul turned politician, became a butt of snide remarks on the street of Twitter, where is also so popular.

Some of his followers on the platform taunted him and said he had been rejected by his people.

A follower, Kayode Ogundamosi tweeted: “@benmurraybruce abandoned his ambition to represent the Bayelsa East Senatorial District following WIDESPREAD REJECTION of his candidacy by the stakeholders of the district. Them no see Ben Bruce HARD-WORK and COMMON SENSE FOR @Twitter?”

Another Twitter user, Daddy D O tweeted: “Ben Bruce can now return to Silverbird and concentrate all his energy on repaying the N11 billion debt his company owes to AMCON and the Nigerian people.”

Yet another user, Adeola Mary Slessor said: “How to avoid public humiliation 101. Breaking, Mr @benmurraybruce applied common sense for the first time.”

But another Twitter user, who has an insider knowledge of the matter, Tabai Biboye, chided those criticizing the common-sense senator, saying it didn’t make sense to criticize him if he had resigned since people always lamented that politicians always refuse to step aside.

He said: “@benmurraybruce is trending on here as he has withdrawn from the Bayelsa East Senatorial race. To my greatest surprise, people have been condemning him. Most of you all are upset when a politician refuses to resign his post when being probed.”

Facebook Inc. today appointed Adam Mosseri, previously Instagram’s vice president of product, to lead the photo-sharing social network following the resignation of co-founders Kevin Systrom and Mike Krieger

In an effort to allay fears of internal dissent, the announcement was made by Systrom (pictured, right) and Krieger (left), who posed smiling together with Mosseri (middle).

While officially leaving Instagram to take “some time off to explore our curiosity and creativity again” and possibly to pursue building a new startup from scratch, rumors have circulated since the announcement that the real reason the pair were departing was disagreements with Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg over the direction of the app.

Their resignation also followed in the steps of Jan Koum, co-founder and CEO of Facebook-owned messaging giant WhatsApp, who quit Facebook in April over disagreements over data privacy, advertising and encryption.

The appointment of Mosseri was pitched as bringing continuity to Instagram. “Since we announced our departure, many people have asked us what we hope for the future of Instagram,” Systrom and Krieger said in a blog post. “To us, the most important thing is keeping our community — all of you — front and center in all that Instagram does. We believe that Adam will hold true to these values and that Instagram will continue to thrive.”

Although Mosseri has been appointed from within the ranks of Instagram, he only joined Instagram in May and prior to that was a Facebook veteran who had served in multiple roles. Prior to Instagram, he was in charge of Facebook’s News Feed for a number of years and before that he led Facebook Home, a failed attempt to sell a Facebook-branded version of Android.

Notably, he is also seen as being close to Zuckerberg. Systrom and Krieger may be selling the idea of Instagram being in safe hands with Mosseri, but Recode note that the move comes at a time Zuckerberg “seems to be tightening control on all Facebook’s standalone apps, including Instagram.”

Zuckerberg lackey or not, Mosseri does have solid experience and Instagram could be in far worse hands.
