@queenisha - no he is not a monster, but i know for a fact that he does not want to sell the house either.

I am wondering if the in-laws are really doing the talking for him He is not the assertive kind.

Let me go offtopic ,permit me
why can't they work on the marriage since it does sound like this man has a good heart.
Divorce is not as easy as it looks until one gets there.
I know
I have divorced friends.
The loneliness they feel is excrutiating
and the next mate may be much worse than what she currently has.
Let them try counselling.
as a friend,advise her so.
For the sake of those kids, they need to do all the can do to make it work.
Children of divorce have an uphill task, life is already hard for kids as it is.
As long as they are both willing, there's no problem in marriage that cannot be solved

superstan:

it's a win-win situation for her.

this is america for crying out loud, not nigeria.

her statement of account will show she is the one paying the mortgage of the house so there's proof.

besides, it does not matter whose name is on the house.

as long as they have cohabitated for more than 6 months, even if they are not married, she is entitled to 50% of the proceeds.

a man can never win with a woman in the usa/uk. the laws are designed to protect women like her.

your friend is very safe.

Don't be too sure my dear.
Laws in the USA differ from state to state.
Some states don't have "common law" protection for co habiters in terms of property and some that do will not include property acquired before the marriage.
But in this case, the people were married.

I say she needs a very good lawyer.

I have a friend also going through a divorce, the man is asking for alimony and is likely to get it because she makes more than him.
Pathetic but true that a Nigerian man would tell the courts that his standard of living will fall because of the divorce and demanding for alimony including a lump sum initial paymet.

HR.hotness:

Not having the house in both her and her husbands name in the first place was  huge mistake. .

Are there children involved? if there r, she needs to make it clear that loosing the house will affect the children. obviously its all up to the husband, he needs to put his foot down and get his mother to sign off on the sale.

your friends should be fully prepared to walk as the mother-in-laws tactic is to basically hold her to randsom and make her life hell

The husband is a generous man if he's willing to sell the house and share the profits if any with the ex-wife.
Most men won't be as magnanimous especially with the reality that if they end up with a short sale i.e sell at a loss, the woman most likely will simply walk away and leave them with the debt involved afterall her name is not on the property and perhaps mortgage.
The man doesn't sound like a monster to me.
Family / Re: Mother-in-law Wahalla! by Queenisha: 9:14pm On Sep 09, 2008
This is sad.
I hate divorce, but sometimes it may be the only option before people run out naked in the streets of this America.
It's difficult to see reason with bitter inlaws when divorce is on the table.
let them proceed with the divorce let the judge or jury decide on the property.

But why on earth would a married woman let her home be in her husband and mother in law's name?
Even if she helped to buy it,the title should have been changed a while back.
She may actually lose out entirely if this property was acquired before marriage ,especially if the mortgage is in the mother in law's name
and the son is just an additional.
Your friend may lose out big time.
but I'm not a lawyer.
she needs a good attorney.

My prayers go to all those Nigerians in prisons in China and everywhere else in the World. Please fellow Nigerians, its better to stay in the motherland than go to these countries that treat you worse than a "dog". I beg you, stay in naija. Naija can't be as bad as China, Russia and all those other racist countries. COME HOME!!!!

Good advice,if you have no work permit, no student visa, no offer of employment,no job prospects, abeg people stay in Naija.
I can understand if someone is going to USA , Canada or even Britain and other English speaking areas on a visitors visa hoping to "regularize".
Why would anyone in their right mind hope to travel to a country whose sentences are drawings and hoping to do well?
At least those going to Italy and the netherlands know that if all fails, they can join the booming "bottom "industry. grin
What has China got to offer them?
Do they need blacks to back them from place to place?
grin

no be so.
How can someone emigrate to China when Chinese are coming to Nigeria?
Some people think anywhere is better than Nigeria until they find out how many dead bodies they have to wash with their bare hands in order to buy common ramen noodles for dinner.
I'm not even talking of the fear of being captured by immigration for washing dead bodi without valid papers.

Chinese die in their scores in airplane cargo compartments,as ship stowaways and in containers with no oxygen while being smuggled to the USA for a better life while Nigerians are flocking to China in search of Indomie.
We get issues.
Chinese are the most racist group on earth towards the black man.
That is the last place any black man would want to live at.
I'll rather move to Niger republic to milk cows with my mouth.

http://www.sunnewsonline.com/webpages/news/national/2008/sept/09/national-09-09-2008-005.htm

Uyo, the ever-busy Akwa Ibom State capital was made even busier on Tuesday, August 26, 2008 when the entire town was awash with a story that an illegal couple–a married woman and her boyfriend who were having sex in an uncompleted storey building were unable to disentangle after the act.

The couple said to have been found about nine o’clock in the morning by the workers in the uncompleted building were said to have been permanently hooked to each other since the previous evening when the married woman sneaked into the building to have a quickie before rushing back home to her influential husband. The story also had it that the husband, said to be a permanent secretary in one of the ministries in the state, had since suspected his wife to be a serial adulterer and had thus decided to lace her with the dreaded ekpo nka owo juju, the version that the Yoruba call magun.
As at when Daily Sun learnt of the incident by 3.30 pm and rushed to the scene which is between 111 and 113 Abak Road, the place had been taken over by okada riders, motorists and pedestrians all coming to see the hooked couple.

Daily Sun learnt that the police had on several occasions come to dispel the surging crowd which had taken over the building. Some young men even mounted sentry and collected N50 from each person who wanted to go in and see the show live. Daily Sun had to pay and rush in to take photographs before the twosome could suddenly disentangle to kill a possible front-page lead.

Surprisingly, there was no couple inside the two-storey building. Our correspondent searched every room pointing camera like American soldiers guns searching for Sadam Hussien with machine guns, yet no love-making couple was in sight.

It was only after Daily Sun had struggled to get out of the choking building and asked those doing business around the place that it was revealed that the whole drama was a hoax.
A lady who preferred anonymity but who works at Ablaze Pharmaceutical and Distribution Limited, 113 Abak Road, told Daily Sun that the whole drama was scripted and acted by okada riders for the public to go crazy.

The True Story
The lady however said that that morning, the security man at the uncompleted building was accosted by a lady who accused him of putting her in the family way. “She started dragging the man but he took her inside the building to leave the crowd which had started gathering. “We never knew how the story of man and woman who could not disentangle came about. But it is the product of okadamen,” she explained.

Another man selling motorcycles on the same premises confirmed what the lady said and wondered “why people would leave they business to waste their time on false rumours.”

Hard Sell
But the true story was very unpalatable to thousands of pilgrims who had turned the building into a big tourist attraction. Even those who had entered the house and come out, still behaved like the “good men” of the Ali and the Angel story. “Chei! I have never seen such a thing in my life. See a married woman disgracing herself, her family, and her husband. She is even a deaconess on one church there,” a young man who came down from the building about 10 minutes after Daily Sun had done a painstaking search, exclaimed.

With such exclamation, others who had wanted to listen to the true story rushed and paid the gate money and went upstairs only to come down garnishing the rumour with different species of spices to make the crowd go wild with ecstasy.

The South South bureau chief of Champion Newspapers, Tony Etim, even called from Port Harcourt same day to confirm the story from Daily Sun. He was shocked when told that it was just a hoax. How news flies!

To make the story even richer, the rumour mongers later in the evening said the police had carried the fornicators (or is it adulterers?) away to the hospital. But which hospital? Nobody could tell. Some said the police had arrested them and were at the state police headquarters at Ikot Akpan Abia. But the police public relations officer, Akwa Ibom State command, Mr Gabriel Ngban, said there was nothing like that. “I heard the story just like that. But there was nothing like that. We never arrested anybody. Don’t mind them.”

Igbo president my bakassi.
Does producing a president help any ethnic group really.
OBJ ruled for 8 years,is the plight of the average Yoruba man, woman or youth any better?
Awusa people have been ruling from time Imo river, are they not still the most backward and most disease ridden bunch in Naija.
I don't care where the president comes from as long as he improves the lot of the masses, and vows to be be fair and keeps Nigeria a secular state with strong handed punishment for militants and Islamists
The governors in Igboland come from Igboland, have they helped Igboland or have they succeded in lining their individul pockets like their counterparts in Kano and Oyo?
This sort of thread is getting retarded
