The chairman, of the Nigerian Senate Committee on the Review of the 1999 Constitution, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has insisted that the Senate will never approve any legislation in support of early marriage.
Ekweremadu made the clarification on Tuesday in Abuja while speaking with newsmen on the recent vote by the Senate on the recommendations of the Constitution Review Committee. Yesterday, Senator Akin Odunsi from Ogun state also made a similar clarification.

He said that the senate rejected the deletion of the clause on renunciation of citizenship, adding that the clause had nothing to do with child marriage as was being insinuated by some Nigerians.
He said that the clause, which had been in the Constitution since 1979, was recommended for deletion by the committee because it was considered discriminatory.

“I just want to appeal to Nigerians to please show understanding. Possibly they should read this section and understand that the issues have nothing to do with early marriage.

“It has nothing to do with Islam. But essentially, it has to do with the renunciation of citizenship. So they have to put it in proper perspective.

“We have no bill to approve early marriage. We are not sponsoring any bill against Islam. This particular provision has been in our Constitution since 1979.

“In essence the senate has not done anything new to that part of the Constitution,’’ he said.
Ekweremadu said that the committee’s recommendations were done in the best interest of Nigerians.
He said that senators voted according to their conscience, the dictates of their constituents and the overall national interest.

He assured that those issues which were not passed would be considered in future amendment exercise.
He said that the principle of democracy played out in the course of the voting as “the majority would have their say while the minority would have the way.’’

“When we sent our recommendations, we had no delusion whatsoever that all the recommendations will pass through. We believed that some would go through and some will not.

“So, you will see that some of those things that failed; we had more than half of the Senate voting for it but because we needed two third; there was nothing we could do about it, ‘’ Ekweremadu added.

Ekweremadu, who doubles as Deputy President of the Senate, explained that the Committee proposed a total of 31 Clause affecting 26 Sections and Schedules of the 1999 Constitution.

He urged state Houses of Assembly to also play their part expeditiously and in the national interest when the bill is transmitted to them.

A combined team of policemen from Special Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS, and Adeniji Adele Police Division has smashed a suspected robbery gang terrorizing residents of Lagos Island, Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.

The police team who had been on the trail of the gang launched a massive attack on the gang on Sunday which lasted for several hours on the Island.

We learnt that the leader of the gang known as Gani Mental along with two other suspected robbers were killed as a result of the injures they sustained during the exchange of fire with the police while four members of the gang were arrested and detained at SARS.

Before they were rounded up by the detectives, the suspected robbers who were heavily armed with assorted firearms shot two policemen simply identified as Olamide and Jide attached to Adeniyi Adedeji Division. While Olamide died on the spot, Jide sustained injuries and was still receiving treatment in an undisclosed hospital as at the time of filing this report.

According to residents, the gang was well known on the Island for its activities including breaking into shops and carting away goods as well as collecting sales proceeds from traders at gun point.

Popular gospel singer, Tope Alabi's widely reported face-off with her spiritual father, Prophet Ireti Ajanaku seems to be taking a new phase with each passing day.

Tope has not hidden the fact that she dumped the prophet and simply moved on with her life.

Meanwhile, my car was stolen on the 25th of December and I left his Church on first of January, so what is he talking about?

Al-Mustapha was released yesterday Friday July 12th after many years in prison, and his first port of call after his release was T.B Joshua's place.

T.B Joshua explains why Al-Mustapha visited him first:

I got to know him many years ago when a petition was addressed to General Bamaiyi who was the then Chairman of the NDLEA. As you know, several efforts had been made by my detractors to bring me and my ministry down. One of those efforts was that petition. I was arrested for investigation and it was later discovered that it was a tissue of lies. I spent nine days with them for investigation and they found the whole thing to be a fabrication. From there, I was taken to Aso Rock (City of Power) to see the president. It was there that I met Mustapha.


I was able to reveal to them who I am by telling them what was to come as a prophet. One of those things I mentioned to them and to Mustapha in particular, was what he went through, though he did not believe me then. That was why when it came to pass, I was the first person he remembered. I told him that he would spend several years in prison and would be finally released which no one else had ever told him.

That is why you see him coming here as his first port of call. Where there is no vision, people perish.

I am surprised you are asking me why he is coming here first. When you look into your archives as journalists, you will find many stories in the past about my visit to Aso Rock, (City of Power) while Bamaiyi was Chairman of NDLEA. Many magazines and newspapers published my visions and prophecies on the government and the presidency.

When you know your picture of tomorrow, it will impart a strength to endure your present difficulty. When you know what you are passing through now will not last long, you will endure it. This is vision; this is prophecy. This can only come by revelation. This is what the Bible means by, “Where there is no vision, the people perish” (Proverbs 29:18). I will leave you here.

Another tragedy was averted in the nation’s movie industry in the early hours of Monday, when ace Yoruba actor, Murphy Afolabi, escaped death by whiskers.

But for God, the respected Osun State-born actor would have been felled by the bullets fired by some armed robbers who had reportedly trailed him from a night club to his hotel suite at SP Continental Hotel in Ebute Metta, Lagos.


It was gathered that the armed robbery attack, which lasted 30 minutes, held the entire residents of Park Road, Ebute Metta (West), Lagos State, shell-shocked, as two security men attached to the hotel were killed.

Another victim, simply identified as Wale, sustained bullet wounds in his leg and wrist. He is at the moment receiving treatment in a hospital in Lagos.

According to National Mirror, tragedy struck in Benin, Edo State at the weekend when a car crushed the father of a groom, identified as Mr. Edward Airhiavbere, during a wedding.

The wedding, which attracted the cream of the social circles in the state capital, ended abruptly before the couple could say, “Yes, I do”.

Many of the confused family members and guests either shook their heads in amazement as they returned home or simply stood rooted to the spot.


The incident occurred about 9.30am on Saturday [Jul. 6] in front of the Registry of the Oredo Local Government Area, located just about 100 metres from the sprawling palace of the Oba of Benin.

The groom, bride and others in the bridal train wept profusely as the victim reportedly died on the spot before he could be rushed to the nearby Central Hospital’s emergency ward for treatment.

Witnesses said the groom’s father died when an attempt to re-park an Isuzu V8 Sport Utility Vehicle, SUV, with registration number Lagos SR 21 KJA in front of the registry gone awry.

A young man, who attempted to re-park the car lost control of the vehicle and crushed the septuagenarian Airhiavbere, who sat behind a Toyota Camry car with registration number Edo BD 958 USL.

The victim was said to have died on the spot despite spirited attempts to save his life. The unidentified young man trying to re-park the car exploited the ensuing confusion to escape mob action.

Unknown gunmen in the early hours of Sunday in Lagos attacked the 04 Hotel in Ajah, killing the owner of the hotel and his wife in a very gruesome manner. Nigerian police have condemned the unfortunate incident and assured that they are on top of the situation...

Source gathered that the gunmen also set the hotel on fire, leading to the death of two others.

Director of the Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe, who confirmed the incident to NAN in Lagos said the incident occurred at about 2a.m. He said the raging fire from the persons set ablaze also escalated and burnt a large section of the hotel.


Rasaq Fadipe said, “At about 2 a.m on Sunday we got a call from the police, inviting us to respond to a fire incident at 04 Hotel in Ajah.

“Some unknown gunmen had stormed the hotel and had shot dead the owner, his wife and set the two other male occupants ablaze. The fire from the burning persons was so much that it spread to some rooms in the hotel and destroyed so many things.

“But my men arrived at the scene quickly enough to stop the fire from spreading to the other parts of the hotel, thereby preventing further damage.
