Health / Hives(Narun): Causes And Treatment by samkolo(m): 3:23pm On Jan 02, 2015
Hives is an epidemic occurrence of inflammation that causes bulges and pale swells ranging from small spots to big blemishes on the skin. Also known as Urticaria, Hives is mostly caused as a result of specific allergies which might be exposure to certain substances, foods, medications, and at times, unknown reasons. Hives can cause rashes, itch, and wheals.

Causes
There are two types of urticarial: acute and chronic
Acute Urticaria is the case in which hives lasts less than six weeks and it is mainly as a result of allergy. It can also be caused by stings from insects. Foods that mostly result in allergies are eggs, milk, soya beans etc. fresh foods are more likely to cause hives than cooked foods
Chronic Urticaria is less likely to be caused by allergy and it lasts longer than six weeks. It is almost impossible to determine the cause of chronic Urticaria.

Treatment
The most commonly used medication for hives is Antihistamines. This reduces the itching, swelling, and other allergic symptoms. However, it is not advisable for pregnant women to use Antihistamines.
Antihistamines block the effects of histamine, so help stop the itchiness and reduce the rash. Examples of antihistamines include:

Chlorpheniramine
Betafemine
Emzolyn (Nigeria)
Cimax (Nigeria)
Spersallerg (Nigeria)

There are other medications that may be used:

Menthol cream
Menthol cream can be used in place of antihistamines because it also helps relieve itchiness and rashes.

Corticosteroid tablets

Corticosteroids can be used on a short-term basis to treat hives. It relieve swelling, redness, and itching, and can also be used for the prevention of its return. Corticosteroids should be used with care as they may have side effects.
