Phones / New Android Virus Goes On A Shopping Spree by sammietos(m): 8:13pm On Nov 01, 2012
Experts at G Data Security Labs have discovered a new type of Android malware that downloads paid apps without the knowledge of the smartphone or tablet user. The malware is hidden in fake GO Weather, Travel Sky or E-Strong File Explorer apps and is being distributed through various Chinese websites and third-party provider app marketplaces.

At the moment, the perpetrators are targeting customers of the world’s largest mobile provider, China Mobile.

The Trojan gains access to the mobile provider’s app store and can then download and install additional malware or paid apps. G Data Security Labs believes it might spread to the rest of the world.
Online criminals have been using the Android malware MMarketPay as a new way of making money from e-crime.

Previously, malware writers focussed on the theft of personal data, spy attacks and sending premium-rate SMSes. Now they have managed to gain access to a mobile provider’s app store for the first time.
To do this, the malware changes the mobile device’s access point name (APN) and connects to China Mobile. Access points on tablets and smartphones are usually used by mobile providers to provide system up-dates, for example. Here, the Trojan intercepts the confirmation message and provides a response via a special server.

The malware can thus access China Mobile’s app store without logging in, then purchase and install any apps at the victim’s expense at any time.

Security tips for Android users:
* Use an effective, comprehensive security solution that thoroughly protects the mobile device.

* Always install updates to keep your operating system and the programs and applications you use fully up-to-date. This closes security loopholes that cyber criminals could otherwise exploit for attacks.

* Only get your apps from trustworthy sources, e.g. from Google Play for Android devices and from provider websites. When you choose applications, pay attention to how often they have been downloaded. The more times an application has been downloaded, the more trustworthy it is. You should also check what authorisations these apps have. Be careful with applications that can, for example, initiate calls or send text messages. In general, you should only install apps that you really need.

* Ignore messages of unknown origin on your smartphone or tablet. Users who like to play it safe can usually check online whether these messages are correct, or call their provider’s customer service.

* Check your phone bill. If it includes charges for services that you have not used, you might be a victim of fraud. (itnewsafrica.com)

Science/Technology / Gmail Beats Hotmail To Become World Largest Email Provider by sammietos(m): 3:25pm On Nov 01, 2012
Internet analytics firm comScore is putting an end to any disputes about Gmail's dominance in the webmail market -- in case you were keeping scores. According to their traffic data for October, Google’s email service has finally overtaken Hotmail with 287.9 million unique worldwide visitors during the month versus 286.2 million for Hotmail.

Google had already claimed the top spot by its own count of over 425 million active users in June 2012, up from 350 million in January. However, these numbers wildly differed from the 289 million reported by comScore at the time. It’s worth noting the research firm doesn’t track mobile usage.

Yahoo Mail ranked third with 281.7 million active users during October. Despite its position in the global market, the latter is still king in the US, with 76.7 million active users versus 69.1 million for Gmail and 35.5 million for Hotmail.

The number of unique visitors to all three email providers is down overall, which GigaOm speculates could be due to the recent introduction of Microsoft’s Outlook and AOL’s (still in closed beta) Alto.

European Football (EPL, UEFA, La Liga) / Wenger Desperate To Keep Walcott by sammietos(m): 10:17am On Nov 01, 2012
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger believes Theo Walcott deserves a new deal at the club after admitting that he has been impressed with his professionalism despite his contractual dispute goal.com reported.

The club strengthened heavily in the summer after the departure of leading man Robin van Persie, bringing in Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla, but Wenger is still keen to sort out a fresh deal for Walcott after his recent form in front of goal.

"I want to keep him, and I think aside from the contract talks, you have to give him credit for the way he is committed to the team, and for the way he behaves," Wenger told reporters.

The England international struck a fabulous hat-trick in Arsenal's 7-5 Capital One Cup victory against Reading and Wenger lauded Walcott's ability to play as a striker, an issue seen as a stumbling block towards any progress over talks involving a new deal.

He added: "I always said he will be striker. He's a good finisher now. He knows where to be on the rebounds.

"That is the quality of a striker you can’t give to someone, they either have it or they don't."

Politics / Boko Haram: Police Place Former Governor, 2 Senators Under Watch by sammietos(m): 5:58pm On Oct 31, 2012
The Inspector-General of Police, Mr. Abubakar Mohammed, said on Wednesday in Abuja that three alleged sponsors of the extremist Boko Haram sect were under watch and investigation.

They are a former governor of Borno State, Ali Modu Sheriff; and two senators from the state, Senator Ahmed Zanna and Senator Ali Ndume.

Mohammed stated this while taking questions from newsmen shortly after declaring open a conference of sectional police heads and zonal and state Criminal Investigative Departments, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

He pleaded with the public to cooperate with the police, saying that they should not hesitate to come forward with information that could help the police to prosecute the three men.

“We cannot take anybody to court without ample evidence. Investigators need evidence to pursue their cases. So we need assistance.

“This is one of the many reasons for this conference today,” he said.

Ndume is currently on trial for alleged sponsorship of the sect.

Earlier in a speech at the opening of the conference, the IG had reiterated his commitment to transforming the Nigeria Police to a 21st century policing agency.

He told the participants that the CID was a key and important department of any police organisation.

“It is our crusade to collectively partner other Nigerians to change the police of today into a 21st century policing agency where things are done professionally.

“The CID we want is not the CID we have today. We would ordinarily want crimes to be resolved quicker and faster,” Mohammed said.

He noted that there had been so many unresolved cases of murder, kidnap and rape, “even though the police are doing their job.”

He added, “It is not because the police are incompetent, but due to several factors that will be discussed today.”

Politics / President Jonathan Effects Minor Cabinet Reshuffle by sammietos(m): 1:51pm On Oct 31, 2012
President Goodluck Jonathan on Wednesday effected a minor cabinet reshuffle.
In the surprise shakeup, Jonathan moved the Minister of State for Power, Gauis Dickson, to the Ministry of Niger Delta.
Dickson swapped places with the Minister of State for Niger Delta, Zainab Kuchi.
The change takes effect from next week.
No reason was given for the reshuffle, contained in a statement by presidential spokesman, Dr. Reuben Abati.
The Presidency had consistently denied reports of an impending cabinet reshuffle.
Jonathan removed Haliru Bello as minister of defence along with the National Security Adviser, Gen. Owoye Azazi, on June 22, 2012 while the Minister of Power, Prof. Barth Nnaji, resigned on August 28.

It started with us not qualifying for the worldcup. We thought Galadima was the problem we sent him away but still we cannot organise ourselves.
We can't organise friendly games. Our league is in shambles and lots more. What is the solution.
