The sum of N2.8bn was approved by the Federal Executive Council on Wednesday to help speed up the decongestion of crowded prisons in the country by digital connectivity.

The project will establish a digital web-based, integrated system that will monitor all prisons real-time to determine the number of inmates, their movements between courts, those awaiting trial or wrongly imprisoned and the time required to conclude the cases of individual prisoners.

Wednesday’s FEC meeting was presided over by the Vice-President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The Attorney-General of the Federation and the Minister of Justice, Mr Abubakar Malami, spoke on the project as the meeting rose.



He said the stakeholders to be connected to the system included his office, the Nigeria Prisons Service and the Nigeria Police.

With the envisaged system in place, the AGF said the analogue method of using visitation committees to determine those inmates to be pardoned would become a thing of the past.

Another N291.73m was also approved by FEC for the procurement of an aviation security system called Memory Access Retrieval System.

The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, told State House correspondents that the system would help in accident investigations.

“(It) will enhance our laboratory in accident investigations. It is a requirement of International Civil Aviation Organisation in the standard practices and applicable by local laws,” he stated.

Enugu Rangers say Christian Chukwu does not need surgery abroad after undergoing treatment for an undisclosed ailment in Enugu.

On Sunday, Grand Patron of Ex-Enugu Rangers Players Association, Benson Ejindu, said Chukwu, who captained the national team to their first ever Africa Cup of Nations title on home soil in 1980, was very sick and in urgent need of support to enable him get medical attention overseas.

He added that the ex-Super Eagles coach needed $50,000 for a trip to the United States, where he would undergo surgery, medication and general after-surgery care.

Ejindu said a gofundme account was opened for Chukwu’s medical treatment, adding that $2,450 had been donated by various individuals as at Monday.



But Rangers media officer, Norbert Okolie, told The PUNCH that contrary to Ejindu’s claim, Chukwu was recuperating after treatment in Enugu.

When asked if Chukwu needed to embark on a trip to the US for surgery, Okoli said, “Not at all. He’s undergone surgery in Enugu and doctors have certified him fit. He was advised to stay in a hotel after treatment to ensure that he’s not disturbed by sympathisers.

“His (Chukwu) family didn’t want to make this a public issue but the management of the club had to come out when Ejindu stated that Chukwu needed $50,000 for surgery in the US and that he’s been abandoned by Enugu State Government and Rangers. That’s not true.

“He has had this health challenge for three weeks and the (Enugu) state government supported him all through. Very soon, we’ll have Chukwu walking on his feet again.”

A 45-year-old man, ldris Aliyu, has been arrested for hacking his younger brother, Aliyu Aliyu, to death over a N100,000 debt in Daka’agi, Niger State.

Trouble allegedly started when the suspect borrowed N100,000 from his friend and gave it to his late brother to renovate his house, with a promise of refunding the money after harvesting their farm produce. .

Late Aliyu, who was expecting a new baby soon with his wife, however, reneged on the agreement. “I was angered, knowing fully well that he had the money and I was left with no option than to kill him as I pulled out my machete and hacked him.



I and my brother had been living and farming together since we were young. After the harvest, I told him about the need to settle the debt, but he refused to listen to me and insisted that we were not going sell any farm produce to that effect. .

I lost my temper, pulled my machete and inflicted deep cut on his neck which resulted in his death. I killed my brother due to the pressure from the person I borrowed the money from,” he said.

Nigeria’s total debt profile as of December 31, 2018, now stands at N24.387tn. The figure swelled by 12.25 per cent from N21.725tn in 2017 to N24.39tn in 2018.

The debt rose by N2.66tn from December 31, 2017, to December 31, 2018, the Debt Management Office said.

According to the DMO, the year-on-year growth of public debt show a 12.25 per cent within the one year period.

Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, Director General of DMO, Patience Oniha, said the funds were borrowed to fund projects, to finance budget deficit and to refinance maturing obligations.



Particularly, she said, some foreign debt was used to refinance treasury bills because of the short tenor of the bills, adding that borrowing from abroad had also helped to stabilise the local currency in the last two years.

The race for the leadership of the 9th National Assembly hotted up on Thursday with a ranking senator on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, Kabiru Gaya, formally declaring his intention to contest the position of Deputy Senate President.

Gaya declared his interest in the position just as a group started campaigns for another APC Senator, Danjuma Goje (Gombe), for the position of the Senate president.

Gaya, a fourth-time senator and chairman, Senate Committee on Works, said he was vying for the DSP position because he was the most ranked senator from the North-West geopolitical zone.

He also explained that the zone ought to produce the DSP since the area gave the highest number of votes to President Muhammadu Buhari in the 2019 general elections.



Gaya also said there were strong indications that the APC leadership was considering zoning the Speaker, House of Representatives to the South -West, deputy speaker to the North-Central, while it had already zoned the position of the Senate president to the North -East.

He said, “If the six zones are accommodated in the sharing formula for the National Assembly leadership positions, four of them contributed tremendously to the election of Mr President.

House of Representatives threatens to issue a bench warrant to compel Pension Fund Administrators to appear before its ad hoc committee if they fail to attend the public hearing on April 4.

Rep Johnson Agbonayinma (APC-Edo), Chairman, Ad hoc Committee to Investigate the Activities of National Pension Commission and its administrators, gave the warning on Wednesday in an interview with newsmen in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the House had, after a resolution passed in February, ordered the committee to commence investigations into the activities of PenCom since April 2017 over allegation of violation of the Act establishing the commission and the N9trn pension fund controversy.



However, the Pension Fund Operators Association of Nigeria (PenOP) had, in two separate letters dated Jan. 28 and April 2, informed the committee that the PFAs would not be able to appear before the committee on Jan. 29 and April 4.

PenOp had, in the letters, attributed the reason the PFAs would not attend the meetings ”to prior engagements slated for the same day.”

Agbonayinma, who cautioned the PFAs against disobeying the order of the House, said the PFAs and other stakeholders in the industry were deliberately avoiding the ad hoc committee.

According to him, the pension association, which the committee did not write letters to or invite, has no right to derail the lawmakers from holding the investigative hearing.

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has seized a boat and arrested its operator for ferrying 12 secondary school children on Lagos lagoon without life jackets.

The General Manager, Lagos Office, Muazu Sambo, said the children were going from Takwa Bay to Osborne for school events on one of the busiest routes in Lagos. .



The NIWA boss stated that the owner of the boats and driver, Mr. Balogun Oriyomi and Solomon Gbenga, respectively, will be handed over to the police for further prosecution.

Grammy-nominated rapper, Nipsey Hussle, has been killed in a shooting outside his clothing store in Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon.

Two other men were shot, and a suspect remained at large. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s Crisis Response Team confirmed the news on Sunday night, saying, “Today we lost a great musician, Nipsey Hussle.” .



It said it was “consoling and offering support to the family.” Hussle was shot multiple times in the parking lot at Marathon Clothing at about 3:25 p.m. and was pronounced dead at a hospital.

Ahead of May 29, 2019, handover date to newly-elected states helmsmen, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has set up teams to probe some governors accused of perpetrating acts of corruption

At least 12 states will have new governors on May 29 after the tenure of the current ones would have ended.

The states that will have new chief executives include Lagos, Ogun, Oyo, Imo, Kwara, Nasarawa, Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Bauchi, Gombe, Zamfara.



Of the 12 states, however, four governors have been accused of corruption.

They include Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State; Kwara State Governor, Abdulfatah Ahmed; the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and Governor of Zamfara State, Abdulaziz Yari; and Ogun State Governor, Ibikunle Amosun.

Okorocha, who has been suspended by the All Progressives Congress, has been accused of diverting over N1bn meant for the campaign of his son-in-law, Uche Nwosu, who contested on the platform of the Action Alliance.

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar narrowly won the presidential election in Edo state with 7,849 votes more than his main rival, President Muhammadu Buhari.

The State Collation Officer for the Presidential election, Prof. Ndowa Lale announced at the INEC headquarters in Benin that Atiku scored 275,691 votes, while Buhari of the All Progressives Congress scored 267,842 votes.



However, Buhari beat Atiku in the number of councils won. He won in 10 while Atiku won in eight.

Lale, who is the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Port-Harcourt, said the total number of registered voters in the state was 2,150,127 while the total number of accredited voters was 604,915.

Lale noted that the number of valid votes was 560,711 while 38,517 votes were rejected.

He further said the total number of votes cast was 599,228.

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, on Monday said that February 23 will be declared as Kwara Liberation Day immediately the new government comes to power in the state.

Mohammed disclosed this in Ilorin on Monday while addressing a Press Conference with stakeholders of the party in the state.

The minister who said that the presidential and National Assembly elections was a clean sweep for APC in the state said, “As you must be aware by now, the official results of last Saturday’s National Assembly elections in Kwara have been announced.

It is a clean sweep for our party, the All Progressives Congress. All three seats in the Senate and all six in the House of Representatives were won by our party.

About seven persons have been arrested with fake army and Department of Security Service fake stickers while on their way to Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.
