Politics / Lagos Pdp Flays Fashola Over Toll On Roads by sartorius(m): 7:33am On Nov 27, 2011 |
LAGOS State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has decried the recent announcement by Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola to toll Lagos State roads. In a statement yesterday, Publicity Secretary of the party, Mr. Taofik Gani, said the governor’s decision was a confirmation that the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) “is a party with no credibility at all”. He added: “Why did Governor Fashola wait till after all the elections before unleashing this agony and pains on Lagosians? The governor has put the selfish interest of his business friends and cronies above that of 15 million Lagos residents. The governor has already admitted to paying about N4.4 billion yearly to the gate operators”. Gani also berated Speaker of the state House of Assembly, Adeyemi Ikuforiji and the other 39 members of the Assembly, for complacency and compromise, thereby making it easy for the governor to take Lagos State residents for granted in policy statements. The statement urged “genuine comrades” in the Assembly to rise and save the state from possible anarchy. It also advised Fashola to immediately retract the order to toll Lagos roads, particularly in the areas where there are no alternative routes. Lagos State residents cannot bear the brunt as they currently stand to pay the highest taxes in the 36 states of the federation, he said. Gani stressed that a transporter, who pays the fees will eventually transfer the burden to poor commuters who happen to be the masses. He also tackled Fashola on the current Tenancy Law, which compels landlords and tenants to do “financial sacrifices”, which even the government cannot afford. “We wonder the governor’s morality when he has not provided affordable housing, introduced legal ‘Land Use Charge’. “This is indeed a surprise attack on Lagos residents especially coming just after the recently conducted local council elections”, Gani said single tenure 5 years |

Politics / Federal Govt, Osun State’s Rift Deepens by sartorius(m): 7:19am On Nov 27, 2011 |
THE face off between the Federal Government and Osun State may have deepened following the stoppage of a programme where Governor Rauf Aregbesola was expected to feature yesterday on the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) allegedly on the order of federal authorities. The two hour-live broadcast tagged: “Radio Link” had been paid for by the Osun State government as part of activities commemorating one year anniversary of the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) in the state. The reason behind the sudden stoppage could not be immediately ascertained but The Guardian learnt that the Minister of Information, Mr. Labara Maku, allegedly instructed the management of the radio station to cancel the programme. The order came to the notice of the Osun State Government about 30 minutes to commencement of the programme. Officials of the FRCN had set up their equipment at the Banquet Hall, Government House, Osogbo when the directive came. It would be recalled that Aregbesola recently complained openly to Vice President, Namadi Sambo about the arrest and detention, by the police, of some ACN leaders in Lokoja, Kogi State, when the Vice President came to Osun to commission the Federal High Court in Osogbo. The Osun State governor had demanded an apology from the police over the arrest of the leaders who were travelling to Abuja to witness the trial of the national leader of the party and former governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Ahmed Bola Tinubu, by the Code of Conduct Bureau Tribunal. The minister was said to have asked the management of the FRCN to suspend the radio programme on the excuse that he wanted to personally feature on the station the same hours paid for by the Osun State government. The live programme was scheduled to air between 8am and 10am yesterday. There was no official reaction from the Osun State government on the matter as at the time of filing this report. http://www.ngrguardiannews.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=68889:federal-govt-osun-states-rift-deepens&catid=1:national&Itemid=559 |

Politics / Re: 87% Of Nigerians Reject Subsidy Removal – Survey by sartorius(m): 7:09am On Nov 27, 2011 |
its time to reason Clearly, no right thinking person will accept that we have any reason or business importing petroleum products, however refining crude oil in Nigeria will largely create savings in labour cost and unnecessary insurance and freight charges. It must be borne in mind that without product pricing that guarantees an acceptable return on investment; no refinery will be built or profitably operated in this country. Even if government decides to build and run such refineries, we will be back to the same arguments some few years from now. The time has come to move from the vicious circle of price increase – strikes – negotiations. The cost of strikes to the economy is simply too high – especially as government in the end always seems to gate away with price increases. This means that the fuel subsidy issue must be negotiated. All stakeholders – government, labour unions, civil society and the organized private sector must come together to find a negotiated solution to the issues. Considering the unstable security situation in Nigeria, any form of strike has the potential to result in far more serious social unrest. This apparent conclusion is that the time has come to engage constructively to achieve mutual objectives. |
Politics / How Sss Established Case Against Senator Ndume by sartorius(m): 7:01am On Nov 27, 2011 |
The Department of State Service (SSS) appears to have established a strong connection between the detained Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume and the former spokesperson of the dreaded Boko Haram sect, Ali Sanda Umar Konduga (a.ka Al-Zawahiri). Information pieced together by Sunday Vanguard, at the weekend, suggest that part of the evidence the SSS has assembled against the senator is what a security source described as “the two-way communication link, via telephone between the senator and the man known as Al-Zawahiri”. It was learnt that the “connect is so strong that even the attempt by the senator’s wife to address a press conference on Friday afternoon had to be quickly thwarted by the senator himself.” “When it was discovered that the woman (wife) was attempting to address the press on the matter of the detention of her husband”, the source continued, “it was impressed on the husband that should such a press conference be addressed, the Department would go to town with details of its findings which allegedly link the senator to Al-Zawahiri. “At that point, the man had to make a quick contact with the wife, putting a halt to the move for a press conference”. Sunday Vanguard was also made to understand that whereas further investigations were still on, “the evidence we have suggests that when the Police Headquarters was bombed, it was the same Al-Zawahiri who announced to the world claiming responsibility on behalf of Boko Haram and we also believe that, prior to that incident, the two men had communication or were in contact.” “If that is fully established, the puzzle we are attempting to solve is why the senator did not alert the authorities; but the investigations continue”, the security source disclosed. In July, 2011, Nigeria’s intelligence chiefs gave a briefing to a closed session of Nigeria’s senate. At that briefing, very sensitive national security matters were disclosed. Among those who had come to brief the senate were the National Security Adviser, NSA, the Director General, Department of State Service, the Inspector General of Police, IGP, and a host of others. They talked about their efforts at curtailing the menace of Boko Haram. Senator Ndume, The SSS believes and insists that it has a strong case him This was just after Boko Haram had struck the United Nation’s House in Abuja. The security chiefs also revealed a lot about strategy. In fact, the security chiefs handed the senate a briefing pack. However, unknown to the security chiefs, a senator, Mohammed Ali Ndume, was among those to whom they were revealing these national security secrets. At that time, it did not matter. Today, it does! Reason: The SSS now claims to be in possession of telephone logs that links Senator Ndume to one Ali Sanda Umar Konduga (a.ka Al-Zawahiri), the spokes man for Boko Haram. The latter disclosed during investigation that Senator Ndume was a major sponsor of Boko Haram. Therefore, last Tuesday, Ndume, who had been picked up on Monday, was marshalled into the Chief Magistrate court premises in Zone 2 at exactly 2:00 pm; of course, along with Konduga. Ndume, clad in a white Buba and matching cap with glasses, took his plea in English while the 2nd accused spoke through an interpreter. Calm, Ndume looked apprehensive when the 2nd accused started narrating to the court how he (Ndume) allegedly furnished them with information. With obvious disbelief, Ndume glared at the 2nd accused all through the court session. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/boko-haram-how-sss-established-case-against-senator-ndume/ |
Politics / 87% Of Nigerians Reject Subsidy Removal – Survey by sartorius(m): 6:50am On Nov 27, 2011 |
BY Oscarline Onwuemenyi This survey was carried out with a view to ascertaining what Nigerians think of the proposed removal of the subsidy on petrol. Verdict: An overwhelming rejection of the idea Even as the Federal government looks set to implement its policy to remove subsidy on petrol by January, 2012, a recent survey carried out by a coalition of civil society organizations in the country has shown that more than 80 percent of Nigerians are not in support of the plan. The survey, which was conducted between October 31 and November 4, 2011, and conducted by the Alliance for Credible Election (ACE) and the CLEEN Foundation, further showed public distrust over government’s ability to manage the proceeds of the subsidy removal with many Nigerians saying that the removal will increase cost of goods and services in the country. Speaking on Monday at the public presentation of the result of the poll, the Executive Director of CLEEN Foundation, Mr. Innocent Chukwuma, urged the Federal government to drop the plan to remove fuel subsidy, and to fight corruption in the Nigerian National petroleum Corporation and the entire oil and gas industry. He added that, “We are asking the asking the government to also stop the illegal bunkering activities and theft of oil in the Niger Delta, and to use the savings from stopping widespread corruption in the industry to fix old refineries and build new ones.” He said the objective of the survey was to obtain information regarding the views of Nigerians on the proposed removal of the fuel subsidy by the government in January, 2012. He stated that, “The issue of subsidy removal on petrol is a very sensitive and emotional one among Nigerians, and we felt the need to undertake a scientific approach by gauging the true feelings of Nigerians over the proposed policy. “Slightly more than 8 out of every 10 respondents (87 percent) said they do not support removal of subsidy from the price of petrol. Only 13 percent of Nigerians interviewed said they were in support of the policy.” According to Chukwuma, the results showed that the main reason cited by respondents against subsidy removal is the belief that it will lead to increase in the prices of goods and services (69 percent), while 11 percent of respondents believed that the subsidy is “the only benefit Nigerians (as an oil producing country) have enjoyed from the government.” Furthermore, nine percent (9%) of respondents said that petrol should be refined locally before subsidy removal is considered, therefore new refineries should be built first, existing ones be fixed and properly managed. Seven percent (7%) said that government should create jobs first, while four percent (4%) believed that government will mismanagement saving from subsidy removal through corrupt practices. He added that, “Results of the survey showed that more than six in ten (66 percent) of the respondents were aware of the planned removal of subsidy on the price of petrol. More men (70 percent) than women (68 percent) were aware. “With regards to awareness by region, the South–West recorded the highest awareness ratio with 76 percent, followed by the North Central and South-South (68 percent), the North-East (66 percent), North-West (60 percent) and South East (59 percent).” Furthermore, Chukwuma noted, majority of the respondents think that Nigerians would protest the removal of subsidy on petrol through public demonstration and industrial actions. “About 46 percent of respondents believe Nigerians would protest the removal of subsidy on petrol through public demonstrations and industrial actions or strikes, while 26 percent believe Nigerians would accept the removal passively as Nigerian people are generally peaceful and have seen/endured harsh actions taken by governments in the past. “Only five percent (5%) of the respondents believe that removal of subsidy will be acceptable once Nigerians are convinced that saved funds would be put to good use,” he stated. Also, in the event of a mass demonstration or industrial action, the results showed that nearly nine out of ten respondents think that security agencies in the country are not effectively equipped to handle such a situation of widespread protest or chaos resulting from the breakdown of law and order,” Chukwuma noted. The opinion poll, which was conducted between October 31 and November 4, 2011, mostly by telephone included about 1032 respondents comprising 51 percent males and 49 percent females interviewed. The respondents were Nigerians who are 18 years and above living in all parts of the country, and their telephone numbers were randomly selected from a pool of numbers representing the six geographical zones of the country. According to the organizers, the survey was conducted in five languages including English, pidgin, Hausa, Igbo, and Yoruba by an independent research company, Fusion Consulting Ltd. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/87-of-nigerians-reject-subsidy-removal-survey/ |

Just in case u dont know the new fees The document had stipulated that students of Arts / Education are to pay N193,750; Social and Management Sciences N223,750; Law N248,750. In the document Communication/Transport Sciences, Engineering and College of Medicine are respectively to pay N238,750; N258,750; N298,750; and N348,750 as against present fees which range between N25,000 and N62,500. Apart from the relatively legitimate expenses which the university now wants to charge are some charges like N15,000 for Teaching Practice/Field Trip, N50,000 for Moot Court Fee for Law Students, N2,500 for General Studies, N10,000 for Caution Fee, N20,000 for Acceptance Fee which is the sum of all charges in some northern universities. The students naturally protested the disproportionate increase, but the powers that be would have none of that. 725 per cent hike in tuition fee is not fair. very soon laspotech, i understand that lagos state has huge debts larger than several states combined and that the tank is running out of steam, |

The chaos in apapa is unprecedented. Federal goverment alongside lagos goverment port operatoprs importers, private sector and all concerned interest should address the mess on the express way. its crazy and the approach should be multidisciplinary even import regulations and decongestion, a railway track or even diverting goods to other ports in the south, only then would sanity return on that route, spending 7 hours on a route that shouldnt last 40 mins is totally unacceptable |

Aregbe has been dissapointing to say the least, thought as an engineer he would restore glory to the state. the water corporation is now comatose as against before that it comes once in a while. the road network is terrible also. not one construction of a major road has been embarked on. the ones that are currently constructed were those appropriated to by the n chairman appropriation comittee sen iyiola omisore, i also want to appreciate the efforts of the senator in allocating huge federal goverment projects in the current fiscal year. over 3 billion was appropriated to the oau federal teaching hospital, and i can tell you that oauth has expanded phase 3 was well executed comprising of an impressive pediatric surgery ward, a pediatric ward, a new morbid anatomy building, several administartive blocks, a 300 capacity car park, an auditorium, radiology building, and so many more that i saw when i was last at oauthc. thats the game of politics, you lobby for your constituency, senator ted kennedy for decades represented his people they knew he had their back, so back then when ac was sweeping the state at least it should have been selective, i shook my head because , its not easy to be a 3 term serving senator, u have more influence than an unknown. for example the new senators sen omoworare. he is simply unknown, he cant influence nothing, he is just even relocating from lagos to ife, the losers at the end of the day are the citizens of the state, I wish aregbe all the best . Nb how can u employ graduates to be sweeping floor and cutting grass. i think Oyes was political propaganda |

BY MONSUR OLOWOOPEJO Governor Babatunde Fashola of Lagos state on Friday justified the reason for the increase in tuition fees of tertiary institution in the state, saying “the increased fee does not really cover the personnel cost of the each of the institutions.” Fashola however described the nomination of Mrs. Roli George, the wife of former deputy chairman of People’s Democratic Party, PDP, Chief Olabode George to represent Lagos state at the National Population Commission, NPC, “as an insult on residents of Lagos state who voted for President Goodluck Jonathan at the last election.” The governor who spoke at the seventh executive and legislative parley held at the Golden Tulip, Amuwo-Odofin, Lagos themed ‘Consolidating Democracy for Service to the People’. On the increment, he said “Before we took that decision, the state executive council carefully considered the current state of infrastructure and personnel in the institutions vis-a-vis what it should be. And also considered the cost of properly funding the institution as against what currently accrue to it from all sources.” In order to supplement the hike in tuition fees for students, the governor said that the state government will continue its scheme of scholarship and bursary as it is done all over the world for indigent students. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2011/11/no-going-back-on-new-lasu-tuition-fee-fashola/ Those fees are indefensibly outrageous, even out of reach for an average family considering other expenses , is Lagos still working? Politics / Re: SSS Parades Boko Haram Spokesman In Abuja by sartorius(m): 6:48pm On Nov 21, 2011 |
BUJA Nov 21 (Reuters) - Nigerian politicians are funding members of a radical Islamist sect responsible for dozens of shootings and bombings this year in the north and capital of Africa's most populous nation, the state security service (SSS) said on Monday. Boko Haram, whose name translates as "Western education is forbidden", has carried out near daily attacks in the remote northeast in Borno state, where Nigeria borders Cameroon, Niger and Chad. Although parts of the sect say they want sharia law more widely applied across Nigeria and threaten international targets, most factions are focused on local issues and carry out politically motivated attacks. The SSS, Nigeria's intelligence agency, said in a press briefing that on Nov. 3 they arrested Ali Sanda Umar Konduga who admitted to being one of the spokesmen for Boko Haram, using the name Usman al-Zawahiri. "He was a former political thug operating under a group widely known as ECOMOG," said Marilyn Oga, an SSS spokeswoman. ECOMOG was a militia group funded by politicians several years ago in Borno and some former members have now joined Boko Haram, diplomats and security experts have said. "His arrest further confirms the Service position that some of the Boko Haram extremists have political patronage and sponsorship. This is more so as al-Zawahiri has so far made valuable confessions in this regard," Oga added. The SSS said a politician in Borno recruited al-Zawahiri, who attended the press briefing, gave him a new name to portray him as an extremist and paid him to send threatening text messages to judges and rival politicians. Al-Zawahiri is also the name of the leader of al Qaeda. Goodwork sss, hope they have gotten hell lots of info before parading. |

Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola has said a vibrant rail system is needed to boost Nigeria’s economy. Aregbesola spoke yesterday in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, while signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Nigeria Railway Corporation (NRC). He said no nation in the world depends solely on road transportation. Aregbesola said: “Sole reliance on road transportation has affected the nation’s economy adversely. It is high time the Federal Government improved our air and waterways for efficient transportation. Anywhere in the world, a combination of transportation systems makes a nation. “We have overused our roads and need the alternative of a viable rail system. It is, therefore, necessary for government to develop other means of transportation.” He said food products from the state would be exchanged for finished products from Lagos State at a market in Dagbolu, a small community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of the state, through rail. NRC’s Managing Director Adeseyi Sijuwade said the corporation, in collaboration with the Osun State Government, would boost the state’s economy through freight services. Sijuwade said the NRC has dedicated wagons to service the state. He said: “When the NRC completes ongoing rehabilitation of its facilities, we shall collaborate with other state governments, organisations and any person that requires our services. “This is a development that is in conformity with our home grown strategy to public private partnership, aimed at delivering quality rail transport services to Nigerians.” Nation |
