Nsukka Town Erupts in Chaos: Oriokpa Masquerades Linked to Two Fatalities, SECURITY NIGERIA reports.

Nsukka, Enugu State, has been plagued by violence since Tuesday, as two individuals fell victim to separate encounters with the notorious Oriokpa masquerades. The incidents reignite concerns over the unchecked aggression associated with these traditional performers.

Recent Incidents:

- Aku Road, Obechara: A middle-aged woman was fatally struck by a truck while fleeing an Oriokpa masquerade.
- Nru Junction: A male University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) student lost his life under unclear circumstances.

Background:

- Women's Protest: Hundreds of women from Eha-Alumona community protested against masquerade harassment on September 19.
- Previous Incidents: A viral video showed Oriokpa masquerades brutally flogging a nurse in April 2024.
- Public Outcry: Human rights groups and citizens condemned the violence, demanding justice.

Police Response:

- Enugu State Police Command has launched investigations, according to police sources.
- Command spokesman DSP Daniel Ndukwe unavailable for comment.

The continued brutality of Oriokpa masquerades raises questions about the effectiveness of authorities in addressing this issue. As tensions rise in Nsukka, residents demand action to curb the masquerades' violent behavior.

Not everything ends with the use of force. This needs a political solution from a conference of truth and reconciliation committees comprising ethnic nationalities.

The first casualties of Boko Haram weren't Christians. They were Muslims. The very reason we need to keep sentiment out of it. My first comment is a reversed psychological question.

Of course. Very much more. One of it is our quickness in labelling every crime as banditry, Boko Haram, unknown gun men without any investigation.

Insecurity is rampant in the country.

Private Ruth Ogunleye, a Nigerian soldier, has been discharged from service following her public allegations of sexual harassment against senior military officers, including Colonel I.B. Abdulkareem, Colonel G.S. Ogor, and Brigadier General I.B. Solebo. Ogunleye claimed that Abdulkareem made repeated unwanted advances, forcibly evicted her from her residence, and confined her to a psychiatric facility for months after she rejected his advances.

Allegations and Investigation
Ogunleye took to social media platform TikTok to share her ordeal, sparking widespread attention and prompting an investigation by the Nigerian Army. The Army’s Director of Public Relations, Major General Onyema Nwachukwu, stated that the investigation found no grounds to substantiate Ogunleye’s claims against Abdulkareem.

Discharge and Controversy

Despite the investigation’s findings, Ogunleye was discharged from service on medical grounds, with the Army citing a pre-existing condition that rendered her medically vulnerable. Critics argue that the discharge and alleged detention of Ogunleye, while the accused officers remain unpunished, raises concerns about the Nigerian Army’s handling of sexual harassment allegations and potential violations of human rights.

shut up your mouth shocked shocked. What did the hippo do? Why keep a wild animal at home? Why present yourself as a treat to a mother hippo, who will do just anything to protect her young? The animal deserves to live and also be left in its natural habitat.
