Health / Nigerian Women Committed 2.7m Abortions In 2017 – Study by sellamarket(m): 4:42am On Sep 22, 2018
A survey conducted by the Performance Monitoring and Accountability (PMA2020) in collaboration with Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has shown that Nigerian women committed about 2.7 million abortions in 2017.

Presenting the results of the survey in Abuja on Friday, Suzanne Bell, a scientist at John Hopkins School of Public Health, said a majority of the abortions were done by young girls in secondary schools and women in their early 20s.

The survey was carried out in Lagos, Kano, Kaduna, Rivers, Nasarawa, Anambra and Taraba States.

“In 2018, PMA 2020 conducted a survey to produce updated and expanded estimates of abortion-related indicators.

“The survey results provided new insights into the characteristics of women who have abortions and the pathways leading to abortion within or outside the healthcare system.

“In Nigeria, most public tertiary facilities provided post-abortion care (92 per cent) and safe abortion services to save a woman’s life (81 per cent); lower level public facilities and private facilities were much less likely to do so.

“In 2017, the annual incidence of likely abortions in Nigeria was 41.8 per cent per 1000 women aged, 15 to 49, which is nearly 1.8 million abortions.

“When including information related to the experience of respondents closest confidants, the rate of likely abortions in Nigeria rose to 2.7 million.”

Bell said that women living in rural areas, women with no education and women who are poor were the most likely to have had the least safe abortion.

Politics / Osun Guber: Ooni Of Ife Speaks Ahead Of Saturday’s Election by sellamarket(m): 11:06pm On Sep 20, 2018
The Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, Ojaja II, has warned youths against political violence before, during and after the Osun gubernatorial election coming up on Saturday.

Oba Ogunwusi gave the warning during the courtesy visit of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) gubernatorial candidate, Sen. Iyiola Omisore to his Palace, on Thursday, in Ile-Ife.

He said: “It is only Almighty Allah that has the power to elevate whoever He wants to the post. He is in Heaven doing what pleases Him”.

According to him, people don’t need to fight each other over getting to a post, but should rather allow God’s will to come into perfection.

The royal father, therefore, appealed to all and sundry to maintain peaceful coexistence in the forthcoming election, saying there is no gain in blood shedding.

Earlier, Omisore lauded the Ooni for his fatherly role and for supporting his aspirations to rule the state.

Omisore also thanked Ife and Osun indigenes, for rallying around him in his campaign and appealed to all and sundry to support him by casting their votes for him during the election.

Politics / What Okorocha, El-rufai Said After APC Governors’ Meeting by sellamarket(m): 10:51pm On Sep 20, 2018
Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) and Governor of Imo State, Rochas Okorocha, said the 22 APC governors had agreed to work for the All Progressives Congress’ victory in 2019.

He spoke to newsmen after a meeting the governors had with the party leadership on Thursday.

Okorocha said, “We just held a meeting with the Chairman and we’ve resolved that in support of the party that we are going to have free and fair primaries.

“Everybody will be given equal chance to participate in the primaries which will be transparent, free and fair.

“And we have adopted both direct and indirect and most of the states are going for indirect primaries, but for the president, it is going to be direct primaries.

“So we have all resolved and to assure Nigerians that we are ready for the primaries and we are ready for the main election as decided by NEC and we are sure that come 2019 APC shall have the victory.

“We are calling on all our supporters to support the party. The 22 governors and the National Working Committee are working together and we have resolved to make sure that we get a victory for the party come 2019.”

On crises in some states over direct and indirect primaries, the governor said, “Like the NEC made it clear that the parties will decide at every state level what they want, either direct or indirect primaries.

“Normally, you would know that our party is even a peaceful party. It is the most peaceful party in Nigeria right now where there are no schemishes and scuffles. If you are looking at other parties, you would know there is no party at all.

“So, these minor complains here and there are expected because even in a family you have it. The NEC has declared that we are going to have direct and indirect primaries and the party at the state level will decide what type of primary to adopt.”

Governor Nasir EL-Rufai of Kaduna State, in his remarks, said: “There is no way one hundred per cent of the party will agree to one thing.

“There will always be some that will disagree but the decision of NEC is that the majority of the state Executive Committee decided on the mode of primaries.

“And the Kaduna State that you mentioned which I’m the Governor by the grace of God, the majority of the State Executive Committee decided on indirect primaries. If one or two members don’t agree, that’s off; that is not the decision of NEC.”

Politics / Tinubu: I Have ‘medicine To Defeat Godfather Terrorising Lagos’ – Saraki by sellamarket(m): 9:08am On Sep 19, 2018
The Senate President, Bukola Saraki has promised to ensure that the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, produces the next governor of Lagos State.

Speaking during his meeting with PDP delegates at the party’s secretariat yesterday, Saraki said he has “the medicine of the man who regards himself as godfather terrorising Lagos State.”

Saraki, a PDP presidential aspirant, said, “What you have been fighting for many years, you will have it during the coming election because you now have somebody that has intention and charisma to deal with those disturbing you.

“I have a medicine of the man who regards himself as godfather terrorising Lagos State. We have their formula, come next year, PDP will take over Lagos.”

The Senate President also warned Nigerians to be mindful of presidential aspirants promising to restructure Nigeria, if elected president.

He said: “Many aspirants will tell you that they will restructure Nigeria, but don’t let them deceive you because restructuring is not something only a president can do because certain laws also need to change.

“So you need a president that has political sagacity to carry people along. But there are very few aspirants today that possess such charisma. Once I assume office, I will devolve more powers to the state.’’

Health / ‘weed Are Free Now’ — South Africa’s Highest Court Legalises Marijuana Use by sellamarket(m): 8:56am On Sep 19, 2018
In a landmark ruling, South Africa’s highest court on Tuesday legalised the use of cannabis by adults in private places.

Hundreds of Pro-marijuana activists cheered in the public gallery and chanted “Weed are free now”, when the Constitutional Court gave its landmark ruling.

South Africa’s government’s had initially opposed its legalisation, arguing the drug was “harmful” to people’s health.

However, In a unanimous ruling, judges also legalised the growing of marijuana for private consumption.

In a similar fashion, presidential aspirant on the platform of the African Action Congress (AAC), Omoyele Sowore, had said last month that if elected, he would decriminalise marijuana use.

He said people were making billions from the plant while Nigeria was lagging behind.

“We have to start taking care of our weed, such that we can also contribute to the GDP of the world,” he had said.

“Some of the best weeds in the world are grown in Ekiti state; I’m very serious. People are making billions out of that particular plant that is very potent in Nigeria. We should be focusing on it. Our NDLEA should get the notice, memo in advance that Nigeria will be exporting weed to cure cancer in other parts of the world.”

Sowore said he knew the subject of marijuana was a controversial one but he expressed readiness to further discuss it if the need arises.

“That’s my last word and I know this one is controversial. If you want to hear more from me about it, I will discuss it,” he added.

Politics / 2019: I Will Pay APC Leaders Monthly If Elected – Nasarawa Dep Gov, Agara by sellamarket(m): 4:49am On Sep 18, 2018
Silas Agara, Nasarawa State Deputy Governor, has declared that will pay a monthly allowance to Local Government and Ward officials of the All Progressives Congress, APC if elected.

His promise, however, is expected to draw criticisms from his opponents ahead of the election.

Agara made the pledge on Monday in Nasarawa-Eggon, when he met with party delegates and supporters in the area.

He said that the gesture would improve the living standards of the party officials who were “usually forgotten after elections are won”.

“I am confident that the party officials will be more committed to contributing ideas toward good governance if elected officials make their welfare a priority,” he said.

He also promised to empower the party officials to enable them to engage in meaningful ventures that would sustain them.

“The monthly allowance will motivate the officials to be active. There are times that they fail to attend meetings because of transport fare. Elected officials must look into these complaints critically,” he said.

Agara, however, explained that the allowances would be funded from his personal income, “and not from government coffers”.

On the APC governorship primaries, Agara advised the delegates to take wise decisions devoid of sentiments and financial inducement.

“You must be wary of politicians who only show up when election is near and offer money to buy votes. Once they can buy your votes, they will abandon you when in power.

“Vote for aspirants that will be with you in good and bad times. Do not be carried away by what you may be offered because, after the election, you will be forgotten because you have been paid off,” he said.

Politics / Buhari ‘smuggled’ Adeosun Out Of Nigeria Not To Expose How His Cabal Stole N10tr by sellamarket(m): 7:27pm On Sep 17, 2018
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused the Federal Government of smuggling erstwhile Minister of Finance, Mrs. Kemi Adeosun, out of the country to prevent her from exposing how the Presidency cabal, including close relations and associates of President Muhammadu Buhari fleeced the nation of trillions of naira.

A statement by PDP’s spokesperson, Kola Ologbondiyan, said by congratulating Adeosun, even after she had admitted her culpability on issues of forgery and corrupt practices, the APC-led government has further showed to be a party of corruption; “an iniquitous fold, where thieves receive medals instead of condemnation.”

The statement reads, “There are clear evidences that Adeosun could not have circumvented the Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Intelligence Agency (NIA), National Security Adviser (NSA) the Police and even the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) without the tacit approval of the Buhari Presidency.

“Furthermore, how did Adeosun evade checks by the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abeokuta and the Ogun State House of Assembly for clearance as commissioner, with her status as a dual citizen, if not armed with inherent tendencies for fraud? It is clear that the Buhari Presidency exploited this factor to swindle the nation, in the finance ministry.

“Moreover, the PDP is worried that President Buhari in appointing Adeosun, with her divided citizenship allegiance, to hold the sensitive office of the Minister of Finance, exposed our nation to the dangers of having our security and economy information sold to international interests.

“This, perhaps, explains the anti-Nigeria financial policies, including damaging foreign borrowing negotiations, which have returned our beloved country to a debtor nation.

“Until President Buhari brings Adeosun back to explain how the Presidency cabal and APC leaders frittered away more than N10 trillion in 3 years, the Buhari Presidency and the APC lack the moral rectitude to pontificate on corruption as they have become directly complicit.

“Finally, the PDP calls on the international community, particularly, the British Government, not to shield Adeosun from facing the course of justice.”

“The PDP urges the British Prime Minister, Theresa May, to note that Adesoun has already confessed to a fraud in Nigeria and must not be allowed a shelter in her nation.

“We also call on the international community to put an eye on all officials of the Buhari administration, including ministers, special advisers and APC leaders as it has become obvious that they are being used to fritter trillions of our national resources while our citizens wallow in poverty, hunger and starvation.”

Politics / PDP Must Not Be Allowed To Return To Power – Buhari by sellamarket(m): 6:59pm On Sep 12, 2018
President Muhammadu Buhari on Wednesday told Nigerians to resist the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2019.

He said this while submitting his nomination and expression of interest forms purchased for him by the Nigeria Consolidation Ambassadors’ Network (NCAN).

“Fellow party members, I am taking this step with all humility, sense of responsibility and an unquestionable desire to serve and protect the interests of all Nigerians.

“I am very grateful to those dozens of organizations who have joined together and contributed funds to purchase these forms. I assure them and the rest of Nigerians that, if nominated and if elected, I shall continue to serve you to the best of my ability.

“Let me today appeal to party members not to be complacent but to prepare, strategize and win in 2019 elections. We must not allow those who brought the country to its knees from 1999 to 2015 to come and take us back.”
