Jobs/Vacancies / Re: How To Identify A Scam Interview Invitation by Serial: 5:06pm On Sep 02, 2016
MY ORDEAL AS A DESPERATE JOBSEEKER (2)

The so-called graduate jobs in existence nowadays are both ridiculous and meant for secondary school leavers.

Imagine a company paints a job role with a somewhat big name to make it look like it is one that rewards with an attractive salary. Sorry o! In most cases, it's not so.

I remember applying to a company for a job posted on its website (permit me not to disclose the job role and the company's name). The basic requirement for the role is a University degree with interest in the line of business the company is into.

The interview process took about three weeks and the venue for it was the head office of the company which is located at Lagos Island. If you reside within Lagos mainland, you'll understand how much cost goes into attending interviews several times on the Island for a low-paying job.

Before the last interview, I received a call from the human resource (HR) team. The discussion entailed description of the job role and stated the salary involved, with enquiry of my interest in the opportunity.

Of course, as a fresh graduate, I was not after the money but, much more, looking out to learn and gain ample experience in my chosen career. I simply said I would give it a consideration while looking forward to a one-on-one chat concerning the job role. So, I gave a positive feedback to the HR later and I was scheduled for a final interview at the company.

This last interview was conducted by three individuals in a board room. So, many things were said which were more like repetitions of things already mentioned in the last interview. One of the interviewers described the role with well-coated terms that made it sound like some management role. In the end, I went home feeling optimistic that I had a promising job already even though it wasn't yet confirmed.

It took a few days to give my final approval about the role and after I did, a 3-page contract letter was mailed to me. Where I am heading to is just what's up next.

On my first day on the job, I and three other persons were taken through a seminar of about two hours in the same board room where my interviews were conducted. If you were one of us, you would think we were being prepared for some gigantic role in which we would gain some world-class knowledge. But to my utmost surprise, on appointing us to our respective locations where we were expected to deliver on the job, I found myself as an assistant to one of the attendants in an eatery.

What's baffling is how a company would take a candidate through such process of interview for a job that can handled by a secondary school leaver. I thought of how I would feel if a friend who I'd told of getting a promising job walked into the eatery to buy fast food. Mhen, it was so embarrasing!

I had to forget about my wasted time, money and effort, so, I decided to quit thirty minutes into the job to secure a more promising job.

Friends, what are Nigerian companies becoming nowadays? Looking to steal quality labour for unbefitting roles while paying ridiculous amount of naira in the name of salary?

This is what is called UNDEREMPLOYMENT and, my dear, it is all over the place. Don't be a victim!

Properties / Would You Rather Book A Hotel Or Rent An Apartment? by Serial: 3:09pm On Aug 31, 2016
Do this two ends actually compete against each other? Well, not in all cases. But in cases where a person has to travel for a long period of time, say about a year, there could be the conflict between renting an apartment or booking a hotel.

Without much research, it can be estimated that the majority of people who lodge in hotels, anywhere in the world, are travellers on business, investment or some vacation purposes. The rest are most likely couples on a date or honeymoon, and other random cases. Hence, for this majority who are likely to stay a longer period travelling, the conflict between the choice of renting an apartment and booking a hotel room is more relevant.

Staying in a hotel can be very enticing though expensive as a booked room in a hotel entitles its occupant to ready-made bed, furniture, television set and even more. This is one reason most people would resort to booking a hotel for a whole year instead of renting an apartment.

However, booking a hotel is not as cheap as renting an apartment. In fact, the cost of booking a hotel room for a year is more expensive than a one bedroom flat for rent and almost equal to what you spend renting a 3 bedroom flat per year in some parts of Lagos. Since apartments for rent don’t come with ready-made features like beds, furniture, rugs, television set etc., it is expected to be less expensive.

In my opinion, therefore, I suggest anyone who intends going on a long vacation or travelling to a place like Lagos with the intention of staying for about year, to rent a nice apartment instead of booking a hotel for such a long period of time.

As for the cost of purchasing new furniture and other stuff, you don’t have to worry as there are serviced apartments that come with all those features.

And if you prefer the idea of rent, you should also look out for sites where you can rent furniture...right?

Jobs/Vacancies / Fresh Graduates Need Training Not Jobs by Serial: 2:12pm On Aug 29, 2016
Fresh Graduates Need Training Not Jobs

In Nigeria, there's a common pattern most graduates follow. From primary to secondary to tertiary institutions and, then, to the compulsory National Youth Service Corp (NYSC) Scheme - without which getting a good job becomes an impossibility.

After NYSC, the next thing on the minds of both Nigerian graduates and their parents is getting a good job. This is not outrightly wrong but has some wrong in it.

Given that majority of fresh graduates possess little or no work experience, it is not expected that such graduates come to the job market with something to offer beyond the head knowledge gained while in school.

The fact is, schooling is not sufficient without some additionally honed skills. Even medical students, after undergoing 6years of schooling still have to undergo an extra one year of internship before full absorption by the health industry. More so, Law graduates are mandated to do an extra one year, after their regular 5 years undergraduate program. All these and more supports my claim that fresh graduates need training and not jobs.

Schooling gives head knowledge while training gives skills; skills are what most employers look out for in their potential staff. Little wonder most graduates do not get jobs early enough after completing NYSC till they've gained sufficient skills.

Schooled education minus self-education makes one almost irrelevant.

You don't have to look down on an unemployed graduate who has stayed home without a job. What you should do is motivate such to gain relevant skills. The more advanced skills gained the more salary expectation you can have and vice versa.

Therefore, let the mentality be adjusted. Skill acquisition, training, internships and the likes, should be given priority over getting a fat salary job because, in this 21st-century, schooled education minus self-education makes one almost irrelevant.

‘After graduation, what next?’ This question remains poorly answered in the minds of those concerned. But it should not be so. In Nigeria, after graduation from the university (particularly, public universities), students have to wait a long time with the hope of being mobilized for the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). This leaves many wandering around the street for lack of something to do. In fact, most pre-NYSC graduates become poorer than during school days as the inflow of school allowance stops after graduation. Even during NYSC year, most members are thrown at the mercy of government meager monthly allowance which, in most cases, is not sufficient to meet even the basic needs. However, there are solutions to this in the form of flexible yet profitable jobs that can be taken up by pre-NYSC and NYSC members. The following are my humble suggestions which you can add to for the benefit of others in the comment section below. READ MORE http://nairabrains.com/2015/12/5-jobs-before- and-during-nysc/
