Outgoing Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has congratulated Mr. Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq on his victory in the governorship election in Kwara State.

Abdulrasaq of the All Progressives Congress (APC) polled 331,546 votes to beat his closest rival, Razak Atunwa of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 114,754 votes.

Senator Saraki took to his twitter account on Sunday, shortly after the results and declaration was made by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to extend his message, while also wishing other victorious candidates all the best.

“I thank all Kwarans, particularly PDP supporters, who worked for the party in the just-concluded elections. My congratulations go to Abdulrahman Abdulrasaq and all those who emerged at all levels. I wish them all the best,” he wrote.

Nigerian `gangan’ drummer, Aralola Olumuyiwa, popularly known as `Ara’ has called on the Federal Government to place a ban on the sales and use of skin-lightening products in the country.

`Ara’, the talking-drum drummer told NAN in Lagos on Thursday that skin-lightening soaps and cosmetics would always have adverse health implications on their users.

She said that the decision by the Government of Rwanda to ban the products was a step in the right direction to ensure the sound health of its citizenry.

According to her, placing a ban on the sales of the products may not eradicate its use completely but it will minimise the rate.

“This may not eradicate its usage but will definitely minimise it.

“People who use these dangerous products do not bear the brunt alone but it also affects their loved ones when users begin to feel the effects of the cream or soap,’’ she said.

Also, a medical practitioner, Dr Ayopo Adeyemi, said that the use of lightening creams and soaps which could lead to could cause skin cancer to individuals.

Adeyemi said that such products could expose the endothelial cells of the skin to wear and tear.

She explained that the endothelial cells form a one-cell thick-walled layer called endothelium that lines all the blood vessels such as arteries, arterioles, venules, veins and capillaries.

According to her, some other dangers associated with skin bleaching include: burning or redness; skin diseases; liver and kidney damages among others.

“Bleaching of the skin is dangerous because it always has various adverse effects on the health of those doing it.

“We must stop using creams with dangerous chemicals and go for moisturisers, instead,” she said.

Adeyemi said that suturing a bleached skin after an accident was always difficult, adding that even if the skin could be sutured, it would continue to break down.

NAN reports that the Government of Rwanda announced the ban on use and sales of cosmetic products for skin-lightening some days ago.

“Love the skin that you have,” is the message from the Government of Rwanda in its fight against skin- lightening products.

Francois Uwinkindi of the Cancer Unit in Rwanda’s Ministry of Health said, “We are now putting more efforts into educating people, going around and seizing those illegal products.

“We are joining those countries, which are also into the fight against the use of illegal skin-lightening cosmetics,” he said.

The Ekiti state Government has appealed to the military authorities to restore the highway checkpoints recently dismantled in the state.

Deputy Governor, Chief Bisi Egbeyemi made the appeal while on a familiarisation visit to officials and members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the state chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ) in Ado Ekiti.

Egbeyemi said the checkpoints are necessary with the upsurge of crimes, such as kidnapping and robbery on the highways.

He said the government was concerned that the military withdrew its men from checkpoints on flashpoint routes, such as Ado Ekiti-Itawure Road, Ikere Ekiti- Ise Road as well as Ifaki Ekiti- Emure Road, among others, for reasons yet unknown to government.

” We urge the military to please return their men to those security checkpoints that have now been closed down and their men withdrawn,” Egbeyemi said.

” The military are the only ones that the robbers and other criminals fear most. Their withdrawal is capable of exposing our people to danger. Already some concerned residents are beginning to develop apprehension about the development and it is our duty to reassure them that there is no cause for alarm

” We know the importance of the soldiers and we are ready as a state to do anything that will make them comfortable. It us our belief that there is no amount spent in securing lives and property that is too much. This government do value lives and will do anything to protect lives of our people

” We want the good people of Ekiti state to know that the present administration will not joke with anything that can threaten their peace and that of their legitimate businesses. That is why we are ready to do anything that can guarantee their welfare and wellbeing”, he said.

The chairman of the Chapel, a Deputy Editor and State Correspondent with the Nigerian Tribune, Mr Sam Nwaoko assured the deputy governor that his members, representing various media houses in the state would continue to discharge their duties of news reportage in line with the tenets and ethics of the profession, devoid of biases, sectionalism or sensationalism.

He however asked government to also sustain its current friendly posture with journalists in the state by creating the environment that would make them carry out their duties unhindered.

Egbeyemi used the opportunity of the interaction to also debunk rumours that the Fayemi administration was planning to sack workers in the coming year, especially teachers.

On the contrary, he said, the government planned to strengthen the public service and provide incentives, including regular payment of salaries that could better the lives of all category of workers.

Egbeyemi also hinted of government’s plan to reinforce the public service through fresh recruitment of qualified persons but without attaching any political or religious consideration for anyone, as done in the past.

” Ekiti is a worker-dependent economy. We know once we pay salaries of workers as regularly as possible, its effect will be felt by all other sectors, especially those who directly or indirectly rely on civil servants’ patronage in their businesses for survival”, he said.

U.S. allies in Asia-Pacific region rattled after Mattis quits

The abrupt resignation of U.S. Defence Secretary Jim Mattis sparked concern among Asia-Pacific allies who credit the retired general with building trust and tempering isolationist impulses, regional officials and analysts said on Friday.

The region includes strong U.S. allies Japan, South Korea and Australia .

It hosts some of the world’s most volatile flashpoints, with high tension on the Korean peninsula and China’s militarisation of the South China Sea causing friction.

Mattis, who embraced America’s traditional alliances, said he was quitting after falling out with President Donald Trump over foreign policy.

The policy include a surprise decision this week to pull troops from Syria and start planning a drawdown in Afghanistan.

“He has generally been referred to as one of the adults in the Trump administration,” Australian government Sen. Jim Molan told The Australian newspaper.

He said his departure was concerning because it introduced “another extreme variable” into U.S. decision making.

Mattis has been a vocal critic of China’s increasing presence in the South China Sea but he worked to ensure tensions did not boil over.

“He’s been the point of continuity and the gatekeeper in the administration that they’ve relied on most to temper the instincts of Trump, which are much more, I think, isolationist and clearly highly skeptical … about alliance commitments,” said foreign policy and security analyst Euan Graham.

Graham is also the Executive Director of La Trobe Asia at Australia’s La Trobe University.

Mattis’ departure also robs Australia, without a U.S. Ambassador since 2016, of a key ally in the Trump administration.

“Australia has always had the ear of Mattis,” a U.S.-based diplomatic source told Reuters.

Australia has had roughly 800 troops in the Middle East since 2014, mostly based in Iraq, as part of coalition efforts to combat the Islamic State group.

About 300 troops are based in Afghanistan, where they have had a presence since not long after the war began 17 years ago.

Trump announced on Wednesday that U.S. troops in Syria would be withdrawn, a decision that upended U.S. policy in the region.

A U.S. official said on Thursday Trump was planning to withdraw at least 5,000 of the 14,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan.

Mattis had advocated for a strong U.S. military presence to bolster diplomatic peace efforts there.

Adam Mount, Defense Analyst at the Federation of American Scientists, said Mattis was a steady hand on North Korea and was instrumental in preventing a war.

“Mattis was bailing water out of an alliance being buffeted by an erratic president, an advancing North Korea, and an increasingly assertive China,” Mount said.

“His work kept the alliance afloat but major questions will have to be resolved to keep it strong,” he said.
