Politics / Ambode Lacks Experience To Lead Lagos State- Agbaje by shiffi(m): 3:03am On Feb 07, 2015
The Lagos State Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Jimi Agbaje, has described his All Progressives Congress counterpart, Akin Ambode, as lacking the experience to lead the state. Agbaje, in a statement obtained by Saturday PUNCH on Friday, described Ambode as “lacking requisite experience in governance.” He said Ambode’s twenty-year experience in the public sector was a mockery of government. “For about two decades out of his 27 years experience in government, the APC candidate could be said to have experience deficit,” he added. Agbaje also said the parlous state of the local government system in the state was responsible for the lack of impact on the lives of the people at the grass root level. He also accused the APC as being responsible for local government failure and turning the institution into a political
apparatus for advancing the interest of the party rather than for developmental purposes. Speaking in the Ajegunle and Makoko areas of the city on Friday, Agbaje reportedly said that several years after obtaining a $10bn (N1.9trn) loan for slum development, nothing had been done to change the face of slums in the state. He promised to ensure the development of such areas in the state if elected. “Let me also charge those of you that have not collected your PVCs to do so at your registration centres. Also ensure that you wait behind so that your votes are not manipulated. If you do this, victory is assured,” he said.
Politics / Presidency Faults The Economist’s Endorsement Of Buhari by shiffi(m): 2:55am On Feb 07, 2015
The Presidency on Friday faulted the influential United Kingdom-based magazine, The Economist, for saying that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), is more competent than President Goodluck Jonathan of the Peoples Democratic Party. In a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati, the Presidency said it noted the magazine’s “tongue-in-cheek” endorsement of Buhari ahead of the presidential elections with surprise. Abati described the magazine’s view of the President as “baseless, jaundiced and rather malicious.” He said contrary to the magazine’s claims, Jonathan retains the trust and confidence of majority of Nigerians as the outcome of the presidential elections would show. He said, “We are sure that many Nigerians and other readers of the usually urbane, thoughtful and well- reasoned editorial opinions of The Economist will be shocked that the magazine has taken the very ill- considered decision to throw its weight behind a candidate who, as a former military dictator, curtailed freedom of speech, ordered the kidnapping of opponents and jailing of journalists, and is accused of incitement to violence and grave human rights violations in Nigeria’s current democratic dispensation. “The Economist may feign ignorance of President Jonathan’s remarkable achievements as leader of his country in the past six years, but Nigerians who, unlike the magazine’s opinion writers, will actually vote in the country’s forthcoming presidential elections, know that President Jonathan has worked very hard to fulfill all the major promises he made to them on assumption of office. “Nigerians know that President Jonathan has developed our economy and created more jobs, they know that he has given policy support to the real sector of the economy, so that small and medium enterprises can thrive, they know that he has encouraged locally owned enterprises to take advantage of our resources in growing the domestic economy and they also know that he has successfully attracted greater foreign direct investment to the country.”

Politics / With 10 Days To Election, Jonathan Splits Nigerian Pastors by shiffi(m): 1:59pm On Feb 05, 2015
*Bishops Battle Oyedepo Over Osinbajo *CAN President Oritsejafor Wants An Oil BlocThrough Jonathan *Okonkwo Opposes Oyedepo over Osinbajo, Identifying “Act of Cowardice.” *Bishop Katung Asserts President Doesn’t Deserve Second Term
by SAHARAREPORTERS, NEW YORKFeb 04, 2015
Nigerian Christians at home and abroad will be shocked by the reported crass opportunism of some of their religious leaders as next week’s presidential polls draw closer, SaharaReporters has learned.
Ayo Oritsejafor
Authoritative sources disclose that during a meeting of Christian leaders held recently, the President of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Pastor Ayo Oritsejafor expressed a strangely personal reason why he is not supporting the clamor of Nigerians for change in the country.
Oritsejafor told his colleagues at the event, which was convened at the Redemption Camp of the Redeemed Christian Church of God on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway that oil bloc leases are due for renewal this year, and if the Buhari-Osinbajo ticket prevails, his chances of owning one would diminish.
“The oil in my father’s backyard,” he specifically said. “I don’t own one bloc, and all these Northerners have oil blocs!”
The CAN president has been known to be an ardent supporter of President Goodluck Jonathan, and anopponent of his leading challenger, General Mohammadu Buhari. What shocked many of the Christian leaders at the meeting, howver, was his message that he was less interested in good governance or the killing of innocent Nigerians by Boko Haram in the Northeastern part of Nigeria, and more so about his desire to also own an oil bloc this year.
Reported to be an even more vocal supporter of Jonathan at the meeting was Bishop David Oyedepowho reportedly said it would be an insult to have any of the Christian leaders at the meeting to vote for Buhari. At a point, a respected pastor, Bishop Mike Okonkwo of TREM, lambasted the meeting for not inviting Pastor Yemi Osinbajo to witness the meeting, being himself a Christian leader and pastor.
According to Okonkwo, the least the Christian leaders could have done was invite Osinbajo and hear from him, adding that not doing that was “an act of cowardice.”
Oyedepo, our source said, did not take kindly to that suggestion from a Bishop of equal caliber, and demanded an apology from Okonkwo. Okonkwo, equally annoyed, insisted on his position and refused to offer an apology at the tension-filled meeting.
Sources said the conveners of the meeting did not want to invite Osinbajo as the candidates on the other ticketwere also not represented. But some sources at the meeting said it was a disgrace that a fellow pastor at their level, running for Vice-President was not even allowed to sit in at the meeting which was convened under the banner of the Nigerian Apostolic Coalition, membership of which he was entitled to.
While Oyedepo maintained his advocacy for President Jonathan at the meeting, at times in vehement anger and outright disrespect for the opposing views of the other pastors, a leading Bishop from the North spoke up against the plans of Oyedepo and Oritsejafor to mobilize support for the president. Christian leaders in the North have always criticized the lust of some Southern Christian leaders for material things making them not to empathize with the sufferings of the Christians in the North, who are facing persecution.
Bishop Jonas Katung of the Maranatha Churchin Josexplained that President Jonathan has done nothing in the past four years deserving of a second term. Katung, who is known as the Lion of Jos, was ordained Bishop in Jos by RCCG’s Pastor E.A. Adeboye in 2013.
He strongly advocated that the Buhari-Osinbajo ticket should be given a chance given the level of failure of the incumbent.
Pastor Mathew Kasali of the Foundation of Truth Assembly in Lagos also spoke passionately at the meeting, calling on the Christian leaders to remain neutral and not become encumbered with partisan issues for any reason. He also supported Bishop Okonkwo that Pastor Osinbajo, “who is one of us,” should be allowed to address the meeting.
A source at the meeting disclosed that the national clamor for change in the country as being captured by the Buhari-Osinbajo ticket has now become a source of great fear by several Christian leaders in the Southern part of the country, essentially because of their own selfish interests.
He asked in disappointment, “Where is the fear of God in the lives of some of these leaders?”

Politics / 2015: Buhari Withdraws From Channels TV Debate by shiffi(m): 11:36am On Feb 02, 2015
Latest reports informed that the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Gen. Muhammadu Buhari, has pulled out of a presidential debate organised by CHANNELS TV.
Making disclosure moments ago during Monday’s edition of Channels’ TV Sunrise Daily was the Director of Media and Communication of the Buhari Campaign Organisation, Dele Alake.
APC-vs-PDP1
According to Alake, Buhari decided to withdraw from the debate because the opposition party had intelligence reports which suggest that the organisers of the debate are partisan in nature and pro PDP.
The Channels TV presidential debate was initially scheduled for February 3, 2015, Tuesday, at the Congress Hall of the Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja.
The debate was expected to serve as an alternative to an earlier debate conducted by the Nigeria Election Debate Group, which was rejected by Gen Buhari.
Gen Buhari, while explaining why he did not participate in the NEDG debate, had said that the composition of the debate panel is a clear indication that there was a ground design to rubbish the hard earned integrity of the APC presidential candidate.
The explanation was conveyed on Friday by the Buhari Support Organisation, the umbrella body of all support groups campaigning for the 2015 February 14 presidential election.
The organisation’s spokesman, Dr. Chidia Maduekwe, further pointed out that if the Nigerian military with its integrity could be framed into the controversy surrounding Buhari’s secondary school certificate, it means anything can be done by the ruling PDP to rubbish the APC presidential candidate.
He said it is their duty therefore to be vigilant always and refuse to offer the platform for PDP to achieve their mischievous plans.
Below was the statement:
“The Buhari Support Organisation wishes to underscore our candidate’s decision not to be hoodwinked into participating in the sham debates promoted by Mr. Sola Omole of NTA and some other pro-Jonathan individuals from African Independent Television.
A cursory look at the composition of the panel reveals that it includes the likes of Mr. Mike Omeri, a Director – General of the National Orientation Agency and a close associate of the last Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah, who was a major financier of Jonathan’s election bid in 2011 and Ms Sally Mbanefo, the DG of Nigeria Tourism Board.
With such composition, the NEDG is certainly tinted and cannot be seen to organise a credible debate. In a severely corrupted third world nation, one cannot reasonably expect a political appointee to organise a fair debate that could result in an electoral loss for his employer.
The other principal promoters from NTA and AIT represent the two electronic organisations that have made no secret of their unalloyed support for President Jonathan’s re-election bid. These television stations are presently the overt campaign vehicle for the PDP presidential candidate.
The recent hate documentary that ran for several days on AIT is a pointer to the extent that Jonathan handlers are prepared to just rubbish the hard earned integrity of Gen. Buhari. We recall that in 2011, it was alleged that one of the President’s Chief Economic advisers obtained questions in advance and forwarded them to Mr. President’s ministers for answers.

Politics / Quotes From Int'l Media And World Leaders On GEJ by shiffi(m): 12:59pm On Feb 01, 2015
Over the years, the Goodluck Jonathan administration has come under stinging attacks from foreign government officials and the international media over its performance.
The attacks which increased astronomically after the kidnap of the chibok girls early last year has continued unabated.
Naij.com compiles the famous quotes that has cast aspersions on the Jonathan government’s ability to govern Nigeria effectively.
Read below:
Influential Newspaper, New York Times, writes,“Mr Jonathan, who leads a corrupt government that has little credibility.”
Britain’s TV station Sky News thinks,“President Jonathan is at best naive, at worst manipulative.”
Well respected financial publication, The Economist, says ,“Jonathan’s government incompetent, callous nd very corrupt”.
British Newspaper, The UK Guardian, speaks writes on the president’s corruption record,“Jonathan’s record on corruption is a disgrace”.
Former United States Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, describes the Jonathan government saying,“Nigeria under Jonathan, squandered oil wealth, and breeds corruption.
Former US presidential candidate and Senator, John McCain speaking on the Chibok girls said,“We shouldn’t have waited for a practically non-existent government to give us the go-ahead before mounting a humanitarian effort to rescue those girls”.
According to the US State Department,“Massive, Widespread and Pervasive corruption affecting all levels of government under President Jonathan”.
Politics / The Yorubas Are Traitors, And I Don't Care About The Loss Of Northern Blood - As by shiffi(m): 5:27pm On Jan 31, 2015
The Niger Delta militant leader Asari Dokubo yesterday said that after Goodluck Jonathan’s term in office is over they will take their oil away.
Asar Dokubo made the threat in a 20-minute phone conversation with Dr Peregrino Brimah, the Sahara Reporters correspondent.
Brimah reports that the conversation was a very heated one, which ranged from the topic of Boko Haram to the 2015 national elections.
Asari Dokubo was said to be unrepentant and aggressive in his total support for the rule of President Jonathan.
Below is Brimah’s account of the conversation between the two.
Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari
Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari
I told him that at a time I had respected him (Dokubo) but now he has lost all my respect; asking how much money would make him support a killer leadership. I asked how insensitive he was witnessing how Jonathan’s corruption had undermined the army and how the president’s failures (not complying with the Paris summit agreement to station 700 troops to defend the border) directly led for instance to the death of over 2500 defenseless Nigerians at Baga
He mentioned Fulani.
I asked what the poor Kanuri fishermen and farmers of Baga had to do with a so-called Fulani thing.
He responded that the killings were in the north and he had no business or care about that. He further cited wars in other places and the example of Libya and the sack of Moammar Gaddafi.
I told him that in those cases there was not an inebriated and cluelessly corrupt government that caused the preventable wars and asked him why then does he support Jonathan who disgraced Africa being the first African leader to support the NATO destruction of Gaddafi and Libya in effect, while great leaders like Jacob Zuma stood behind Libya.
He said something about having trained in Libya and accused General Buhari, chief opposition candidate of receiving funds for his presidential campaign in 2011 from Gaddafi.
I did not understand his point, because I supported Gaddafi and Libya against the colonialist sponsored invasion and have no grouse with Gaddafi.
I insisted; that why will he support a Jonathan who aided the hegemonists destroy North Africa by sacking Gaddafi, now leading to the proliferation of arms and instability in the entire region.
I went on to ask him how much he had been paid and what this money was worth, that it made him sell his soul for a hopeless candidate.
He continued a tirade against the North, the “Gambari’s” and the Yorubas, saying all were traitors and that why am I interested in the Fulani ruling me.
I told him that this conversation had nothing to do with Buhari; that if he wanted he should not support anyone, or should have brought out a responsible candidate from his family, but how does his conscience feel supporting someone who was killing innocent people across the country.
He responded again accusing Yorubas, the group to which I belong, of being traitors and bragging of all the bombs his terror group had detonated across Yoruba land.
I told him that his desperation for a penny had made him betray the true struggle of the Ijaw people; I pointed out that Bayelsa was the most polluted piece of land on the planet with terrible suffering.
He challenged my stats and asked me what I knew about Bayelsa.
I responded that I lived there for a year and that the sky there is still red with burning of natural gas. I told him how oil spillage has destroyed their ecosystem under Jonathan.
He asked how long Jonathan had been there.
I retorted that 6 years was long enough to effect transformation.
He said I lied and that I had never lived in Bayelsa.
I went ahead to describe Bayelsa to him.
He was very angry and continued to curse Yoruba people as traitors who betrayed in the past and threatened that the Yorubas will feel the wrath of the Ijaw.
I told him he was a coward, that if he was not he would have liberated his father’s house and kept the oil under its soil for himself.
He laughed and responded that we (Nigerians) are their slave; that they will support Jonathan to rule till 2019 after which they will then take “their” oil and go.
He said they were just punishing us for now.
I asked him if Jonathan was supervising the Boko Haram pogrom of the north as some sort of “revenge” for Nigeria’s past errors.
I asked him why Goodluck Jonathan had not restructured the country so he can preside over Otueke and leave other people alone and not continue to finance and supervise our suffering and deaths. Telling him about the failure of the national conference when only the Yorubas in attendance and Northerners like the Lamido of Adamawa had asked for their own sovereignty, but his people had failed to make such push and Jonathan had failed to use the avenue of the conference to bring about change.

As the 14 February, 2015 date for the presidential elections draws closer, supporters and critics of the country’s two major parties, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have been at loggerheads over the candidates of their respective parties.

In December, it crystallized into a debate over the academic credentials of both candidates, especially those of President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

The president’s profile on the State House website reads thus: “He graduated with Second Class Upper honours in 1981. In 1985 and 1995 he studied for his Master’s and Ph.D degrees in Hydrobiology and Fisheries Biology, and Zoology respectively, from the same University.”

This gave him the status of being Nigeria’s most educated President ever. This was until the masses inspired by the increasing influence of social media and improved citizens participation in governance, began to ask questions.

Some began to ask, for a president with issues of eloquence and clarity of thought according to his critics, where was the evidence of his doctorate degree? For one whose campaign team has asked the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disqualify his main challenger over the same issue of academic qualifications, wasn’t this being a proverbial case of removing the speck in another’s eyes when a log is embedded in the accuser’s?

It caused so much of a storm; we went in search of the president’s thesis.

Mrs. Victoria Boyo was Head of Department (HOD) of Home Economics at the time when Dr. Jonathan was a lecturer at the Rivers State University of Education confirmed that he was a colleague then. “He was one of those very quiet people who couldn’t hurt a fly,” she recalls. “He hardly participated in even campus politics but as far as his qualifications are concerned, I don’t know anything.”

At the departmental library of the Department of Zoology (now Animal & Environmental Biology), a dedicated two-hour search by two volunteers combing through the shelves, yielded nothing.

The resident librarian, who joined the departmental staff in 2006 says she got to the task of arranging the projects, dissertations and theses of past students at the undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral levels as soon as she arrived. “I never once came across the president’s doctoral thesis,” she said, on condition of anonymity.

The catalog in the library was no help as it lists only theses submitted from 2007.

The entire department moved to its present location on third floor of the four-storey building that houses the entire College of Sciences in 1993 from the old Choba Park campus that at present still has the Faculty of Education. While it is possible that many copies of such documents were misplaced in the relocation, Jonathan’s could not have been among the affected ones, as he supposedly submitted it two years later, in 1995.

Another member of staff who wouldn’t want her name in print, mentioned that during an accreditation exercise and inspection tour of the school as recently as 2014, officials of the National Universities’ Commission (NUC) asked to be shown the departmental library. While inside, they asked to see the thesis of Jonathan, the department’s most prominent export ever, but it was unavailable. At the time, she says, a new HOD had just been appointed who claimed not to know the status of the missing document, leaving the NUC officials bewildered.

Interestingly, Jonathan’s Master’s dissertation obtained in 1986 in Hydro-Biology and Fisheries Biology specialization in the same course (Zoology), was also nowhere to be found – even though there are some that date back as far as 1981.

Of course, record-keeping in Nigeria is notoriously poor and many universities are yet to digitize their libraries.

Roseline Konya, professor of pharmacology and toxicology, and one-time Commissioner for Environment under the administration is currently the Dean of Graduate Studies at the university. Back in 1995, she supervised one Asim E. Eno. By virtue of the time of submission, Konya could have also supervised the President if he was a doctorate student then. Attempts to reach her proved abortive as she was “not on seat” when this reporter visited. Mails to her have been unreplied.

“Who you wan put for trouble,” someone in her office said after offering her email address, while refusing to give up her mobile number. “She will never reply you on this matter.”

Below are pictures from the thesis of one Asim E. Eno who also submitted a thesis in 1995, the same year Jonathan supposedly did his too.
The current Head of Department for Animal & Environmental Biology, Professor Florence Nduka, also could not be reached for comments as at the time of publishing this report as she was also “not on seat”.

An official enquiry submitted to the school administration has not been replied.

An extensive search online revealed a conference paper, “Identification of West African Estuarine Shrimp and Crab Larvae” which was co-written by Jonathan, G.E. with Powell, C.B. and Hart, A.I. (1985) on Aquatic Commons, the directory for publications on natural marine, estuarine, brackish and fresh water environments. At this time, the president was still a lowly lecturer in the Department of Biology at the Rivers State College of Education.

In the aforementioned 1985 paper, Jonathan self-references a publication which is in all likelihood, his Master’s dissertation. Titled “Stage 1 larvae of fresh and brackish water decapod crustaceans (excluding Natantlal) of the Niger Delta”, it is however dated 1984, two years earlier than the quoted date which is present in all his official profiles and bios. Further search on Aquatic Commons for the PhD thesis turned up no results whatsoever for the year 1995.

There were a few other conference papers online in the Web of Science journal under the name “G.E. Jonathan”. While it was not possible to determine accurately the identity of the author, they were published in 2003, 2006 and 2010 which would make him (if he were the one) a multitasker and intellectual of the highest order, combining the challenges of governance with the rigours of academic research.

No single academic journal has an online record of his research from 1985 – 1995 when Jonathan should have been very active as an academic scholar, which is why the renewed activity between 2003-2010 when he was in active politics, seems suspect.

“The first person listed is usually the author of the publication and other names are usually those of scholars or senior colleagues in the field, to give the paper weight and attract favourable reviews”, explained the Librarian. ”It is very possible that he did not author those papers.”
So we thought to ourselves – how about the vice president?

Recently, there was an admission by the normally taciturn Namadi Sambo that both his Bachelor’s and Masters’ degree certificates were burnt in a fire, the circumstances of which were unexplained. The controversy about the suitability of his person to lead Nigeria, given the uncertainty surrounding his academic qualifications or the lack of them, has also extended to him.

His official profile on the same State House website reads: “He attended the School of Basic Studies at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria in 1972, after which he gained admission into the famous Department of Architecture, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria 1973 and graduated in 1976 with Bachelor of Science degree with Honours in Architecture (B. Sc. (Hons) and holds a Master’s degree (M. Sc.) Arch 1978.”

In submitting his documents to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Sambo attached a letter signed on behalf of the institution’s registrar by one Alhassan Garba, the Principal Assistant Registrar, verifying that he indeed obtained both degrees.

A staff (who did not want his name in print) at the Public Affairs Department at the main campus of Sambo’s alma mater – the Ahmadu Bello University, in Samaru, Zaria said the school Public Relations Officer was not available to comment but that the Vice-President was indeed an alumnus of the university. “I can assure you that he is an alumnus of this institution”, he said. Sometime ago, his certificates were razed in a fire and the university authorities have given him a letter to that effect so people should stop playing politics with that.”

YNaija also checked in at the Department of Architecture, Faculty of Environmental Design. There was an up-to-date catalogue of theses from 1963-2010 in the data room of the departmental library, which from the look of things was far more organized than the one at Port Harcourt. It was compiled by the umbrella body of students in the department, the Society of Architecture Students (SAS) in February 2011, a few months to the presidential elections that year.

Right there along with other students in 1978 is the name “M.N. Sambo” with the title of his thesis: “Brick Factory” beside it. For most of the other theses in the catalogue, there was a title with a location for the project work e.g. “THOMSON A. – Car Service Station for Kaduna” Both librarians checked the inner store at different times on separate occasions and couldn’t find it, saying it was unavailable.

“I don’t know why it’s not here”, said one of them who also checked the list of borrowed theses but could not find any record of it there. An official enquiry to the university authorities has not been replied as at the time of sending this report in.

Barr. Joseph Agu, a Lagos-based lawyer argues that getting an FOI request for the universities to produce the thesis of both men would be a waste of time as section 15 (1) and (2) of the FOI act covers both men and any judge would dismiss the case, ruling that his private rights outweigh public interest.

The section reads:

(1) A public institution shall deny an application for information that contains –

(a) trade secrets and commercial or financial information obtained from a person or business where such trade secrets or information are proprietary, privileged or confidential, or where disclosure of such trade secrets or information may cause harm to the interests of the third party provided that nothing contained in this subsection shall be construed as preventing a person or business from consenting to disclosure;

(b) information the disclosure of which could reasonably be expected to interfere with the contractual or other negotiations of a third party; and

(c) proposal and bids for any contract, grants, or agreement, including information which if it were disclosed would frustrate procurement or give an advantage to any person.

(2) A public institution shall, notwithstanding subsection (l), deny disclosure of a part of a record if that part contains the result or product of environmental testing carried out by or on behalf of a public institution.”

The controversy continues as it becomes pertinent to ask if both men lie under oath to INEC and their party, the PDP.
