Jobs/Vacancies / Why You Must Lie On A Job Interview And What You Must Lie About by shinechinedu(m): 9:05am On Oct 07, 2014 |
All of the characteristics HR (human resource)looks for in a job candidate are the polar opposite of what enlightened leaders seek in new talent. While HR is tediously focused on making certain that candidates "play well in the sandbox," strong managers want those who don't venture near the proverbial box. Which creates a conundrum and a paradox:to get to the latter you need to lie to the former. As well you should. Why be held hostage to a broken system? Case in point:the HR person will likely ask you if you work well with others? Well, many of the smartest and most innovative people on the planet simply don't. Not that they are trouble makers or in any way venal but they simply prefer to work alone, creating marvels of software, mathematical formulas or extraordinary feats of creativity. But can they tell HR: "No. I don't really like working with others. I guess you can say I do my best work by myself. My professors at MIT used to call me a 'loner.'" HR's universal reaction to this honest response would be "Next." Einstein and Newton would have failed their test. For years, my firm worked with a hedge fund that invests capital based on quantitative strategies, developed by their team of math and physics brainiacs. None even pretend to enjoy the social aspects of the work environment. For them, it is all about hibernation, concentration and introspection. They never stepped into a a sandbox as kids and they aren't about to start now. Over the course of an intense year when we examined and adjusted many of the practices of the fund, management came to recognize that the caliber of the candidates coming to them for second-stage interviews was way down below the quality hierarchy. On closer examination, we discovered the HR filter was turning the best and the brightest away before they could be seen by senior fund managers -- all geeks and loners in their own right. The solution was simple: HR was limited to managing the fund's employee benefits and policies and completely removed from the hiring process. Another HR question that demands a lie goes like this: "So tell me why you want to work for our company." In many cases, the honest answer would be: "I think this is the best place to make a fortune before I'm 35. I really want a chunk of those stock options." But to the HR paint-by-numbers gang, that would lead to a fast dismissal out the fire exit. To get to the next-stage interview you have to lie, waxing poetic about the company's innovative culture or lionizing it's irreverent founder (who, by the way, is eager to have brilliant wealth-seeking hot shots on the team). The old adage "Just be yourself," is a fool's game when it comes to the hiring process. Instead, at the outset, you need to be what HR wants you to be. And in most cases, you need to (and very well should) lie to win a pass to see the real players in the company. The ones with a 180 degree different (from HR) perspective on life/business/success and how to get what you want in your career. Look, I don't believe in making lying a way of life--in fact, I appreciate blunt and honest people and think of myself in this way. But when a system is stacked against the truth, dance around it. |

The most important kind of freedom is to be what you really are. You trade in your reality for a role. You trade in your sense for an act. You give up your ability to feel, and in exchange, put on a mask. There can't be any large-scale revolution until there's a personal revolution, on an individual level. It's got to happen inside first. Jim Morrison All revolutions are, until they happen, then they are historical inevitabilities. |

oluwalfa:my name is shine Chinedu and I'm igbo too. I understand your grieviances 100% man, you have the right to be annoyed if not for anything but for what we suffered during the war. The bloods of those innocents are still not appeased, but being a strong man doesn't always mean going for an eye for an eye when you re stepped on, or taking Revenge for every soul killed. Nigeria as we know it today is just a group of stubborn people merged together. But even after the almagamation, we've managed to stay a 100years without splitting even though its not really been a peaceful 100years, can u beat that? Its just amazing. Put it this way, its just like ur dad adpoted 3 children from three different continents each having different views about life, and after ur dad dies, u all still managed to stay together admist the quarrels and fights for a hundred years, that right there has a lot of things in it. So brother. Its time we call a family meeting to discus the way forward. We cnt just continue with these grudges. Cos some crazy old fools are making a fortune off our bitterness. Its time to come together and apolgise for our individual mistakes and fight these pests feeding off our anger. 1 Like 1 Share |

BlackTechnology:Holding on to the past has always been a draw back to growth if you ask me. The civil war has long ended. But its wounds are still felt. But its not a physical wound , its emotional, psychological but truth be told, what we need isn't an apology from anybody. We need the few among each tribe that have been able to overcome these pains to put heads togetherand device a way to make their kinsmen forgive themselvesand others as well, that's what we are campaigning for. And until that is done, a revolution cnt take place. Cos all hands must be on deck to accept responsibilities |

I got to delta state from lagos state yesterday cos my mum insisted that I celebrate the independence with them, I got home safely though and woke up around 7am to find my dad slaughtering a goat! I was stunned and asked what it was for and he happily replied " its for the celebration" I was just dumbfounded. And I was forced to ask, what are you really celebrating? The indepndence we got in 1960 or the slavery that our own people have put us? Sincerely everybody has their own reason to celebrate but to me, its just another day in a country where mediocrity is celebrated. I love my country for some personal reasons, but I strongly believe that we need to demand more from our leaders and be more active than keepin mute and celebrating slavery, some see the influx of entertainers into politics as a slow revolution of its own but please pardon my skepticism, I don't believe they are better. They might have clean intentions but I don't think the ones I've seen so far have the balls to make any tangible difference! Nigeria is a big and demanding country, she needs smart and tough minds to handle her, just like buhari said, we need common sense revolution. I'm just here scrolling through nairaland though, if you have good reasons for celebrating today please do comment let me see thanks, and to safarigirl, u re really a smart girl from the angle I've seen so far, I hope u keep it up and actually do more than writing too. which politician spoilt Nigeria? It's foolish Nigerians that spoilt and are still spoiling Nigeria. You should all be ashamed that less than 3% of Nigerians have put 97% of us in bondage. Really, it's pathetic. Look at this 4,000 NYSC payment, do you realise if everyone agrees not to pay a dime, they'll cancel that thing? But no, Nigerians can sabotage themselves, a bunch of eediots will go and pay and the rest will have to follow suuite. When that immigration stampede happened, there were enough people in the Abuja centre to march to aso rock and begin a revolution, but what happened? They all went home and thanked God they were alive to go on another job search tomorrow. A courageous journalist exposed TB Joshua's condemnable act of bribery and Nigerians condemned the fellow and made shameful, eediotic excuses for the TB Joshua fellow, in a sane country, that man ought to be in jail facing murder and man-slaughter charges, not getting condolences from your president The problem with Nigeria is it's people, the same people that want to run away and reap where they didn't sow- enjoy the benefits of good governance where the people demanded it, and until you all demand good governance, you'll continue to wallow in your self-pity and run away. Like Mandela said "the leaders are a reflection of their people" NOW IM ASKING, WHAT CAN HAPPEN TO US TO MAKE US START OUR OWN REVOLUTION AS A PEOPLE? IVE HAD ENOUGH ALREADY. HOW MANY OF US LOVE NIGERIA TO THE POINT OF FIGHTING FOR HER? 9 Likes 6 Shares |

Sports / How Nigeria Can Win The World Cup Using Technology by shinechinedu(m): 2:03am On Sep 15, 2014 |
Like millions of football fans worldwide, after watching Germany defeat Argentina 1-0 in extra time to win the World Cup in Brazil, both finalists are being applauded and non-nationals of Germany are left to rue ‘What could have been’ for their individual countries. Nigeria had a respectable showing at the World Cup. However, the general consensus that we can do better. For Nigerians, the following questions arise: 1) Can Nigeria ever win the world cup? 2)If we can, what do we need to do? These questions are explored in detail below. Can Nigeria ever win the world cup? This question has only 2 answers – Yes or No. You cannot ‘maybe or possibly’ win the world cup. You either win it or you don’t. Either of these two answers have logical reasons for being chosen. Nigerian CoachFor those in the ‘No’ camp, fingers will be pointed at the level of organization at the football federation. Further ammunition is added to the ‘No’ camp because at the time of writing this article, the Nigerian Football Federation has been sanctioned by FIFA, the football governing body for interference by the Government. Those in the ‘Yes’ camp will tell you that whist there may be problems now, as long as we qualify for the World Cup, there is a statistical chance that Nigeria can win the World Cup. Nigerian players have the natural talent, flair, ability and there are thousands of footballers to select from in a country that boasts of about 160 million people. If Nigeria can win the world cup, what do we need to do? To answer this question, let’s find out what the current world champions, Germany have done. Under 17 World CupWhile Germany’s success can be attributed to many things, it could all be traced back to the role and method of preparation using technology. Germany’s World cup preparations did not start a few months to the world cup. On the contrary according to Joachim Loew, the 54 year old coach of Germany, “I think that we were 50 days together but this is a project we started 10 years ago…we started it with Juergen Klinsmann (after 2004) and then we continued it. Our biggest strength is that we improved throughout the years even if we missed taking that last step at tournaments”. BundesligaThe German Football Association (DFB) invested in youth centers which work closely with the various Bundesliga clubs and keeps an index of the performance of each of these players. These youth players are assimilated into the German league structure with teams fielding younger players with more technical skills. This led to Germany fielding one of its youngest teams in 76 years at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa. To be fair, the Nigerian Football Federation has invested in youth centers particularly with the support of FIFA through projects such as the FIFA ‘Goal’ Project. Glo Premier LeagueLike Germany, Nigeria needs to use technology to build a database and index the performance of each of these players and track them as they develop. The good thing is Nigerian companies such has Debonair Devices Ltd which manufacture the ‘Made-In-Nigeria’ range of tablet computers, mobile phones and other mobile internet devices under the ‘Bamboo’ brand have offered to help the NFF keep track of Nigerian players over a 10-year period with a Nigerian Players Index which will commence from the 2015/2016 season. In addition, Bamboo Devices will be used to monitor player performance in training sessions (especially during camping of the Nigerian National Team) using technology that will measure the speed, acceleration, distance, heart rate and power levels of every athlete in training. This information will be made available to the Coach, NFF, Clubs and other experts on their Bamboo tablet computers and mobile phones provided by Debonair. The data can also be used for post session in-depth analysis. The detailed performance data will allow coaches and trainers to fine tune each player’s skills and plan workouts that focus on particular areas of need. Using the methods above (and with a little luck), Nigeria can be genuine trophy contenders in the Qatar 2022 or 2026 World Cups. curled from bamboo.com.ng[img][/img]

Computers / Is NIIT Worth The Amount? by shinechinedu(m): 2:16am On Sep 04, 2014 |
top of the morning to you everybody. my younger brother just finished his waec and is about to apply for admission into the university. thing is, he wants to study computer science, and we all know that the average Nigeria university cant even ground you on the real computer ish- all they do is mostly theory theory theory. to be sincere with you guys, he knows pretty much nothing about computers but hes a very smart kid, i can stand for him any day or time and he loves computers to the core, so i advised him to go to an IT center to learn. he picked NIIT, but i know almost nothing about them, except for the fact that its an Indian firm and charge pretty high, so i went to their ikeja branch to confirm issues and i was right about the price,(they charged 700k for a three years course in computer programming and added that on graduation, he must do his project outside Nigeria which costs are also going to be borne by us) it was really confusing though. the few people ive asked about them have said that they are really credible but some posts i saw about them on Nairaland (from 2009 and 2012) are really discouraging, the OPs seem to have first hand experience about them and complained about low quality teaching etc. so im asking you computer gurus here, pls is it worth it now, have they improved on teaching? is there any other credible institute that can do better? pls ur answers re needed ASAP cos i want to go see my dad today to explain my findings. thanks you guys in advance..
