Romance / Nairalander's Are These Points 100% True About Women? by simtosul: 11:43am On Jul 09, 2016
Men claim women are much more complicated than them, but what about
our side of the story?
It’s actually really simple to make a woman happy – if they’d only look out
for the signs! Here are 24 things women wish men knew… Guys – we hope
you’re taking notes! And while this is no lesson on how to treat a lady it’s
a pretty accurate guide into what us girls are really thinking. Boys, once
you’ve read this, you will have THE KNOWLEDGE. Use it wisely.

1. Women Appreciate Small Things
Some guys think all they have to do is surprise us once and they’re set for
life, but trust us, we’re keeping note. Why not pick-up our favourite feel-
good treat while you’re on your way home this evening (clue, it’s either
wine, chocolate or cheese) or buy us that new book we’ve been talking about
non-stop. Trust us, our appreciation will show.

2. The E-word Effort
(a word no man is unfamiliar with) is always the hitch. Take out the
trash, call us to see how our day was or do something really special for our
anniversary. We’re worth your time.

3. Confidence is hot, arrogance is NOT
Every girl loves a man who’s comfortable in his own skin. It makes us feel
safe and protected and nothing feels sexier than that. But arrogance? We.
can’t. Stand. It.

4. Chivalry is not dead
Be old fashioned from time to time – we freaking love it. Pay on the first
date, hold the door for us and walk us to the front door. Promise, we won’t
call you stage-five clinger.

5. Don’t be a man-baby
We’re nurturing, yes. Women love taking care of their men and helping
them out, but as soon as we feel like we’re in mommy mode we want out.
Most guys are kids at heart, but if we’re doing more than a bit of coddling
(i.e. cutting your food into little pieces) then there’s definitely a BIG
problem.

6. Listen and take interest
After a hectic day all we want our man to do is listen. Women like to talk
and pour their feelings out – it’s a well known fact. We confide in you,
because we trust you to make us feel better. So please just mute the TV, put
down your beer and just listen dammit!

7. Be honest
It’s true when they say honesty is the best policy. Telling a fib might seem
like a great idea now, but women always find out and when we do it ain’t
pretty. Most importantly, don’t cheat and lie about it. That’s just cowardly.

8. Make us a priority
Women need to feel like they’re more important than an Xbox. Of course
men need to spend time with their friends and have some down time, but 3rd
place isn’t cool. If your girl doesn’t feel like she’s a priority then you’re
doing something very wrong buddy.

9. Notice the small things
Everyone wants to be noticed by their partner. New hairstyle? New clothes?
New dress size? New bra? Say something to acknowledge our effort, besides
we (partially) did it for you!

10. Take it slow (in bed)
It can’t get any worse than a man finishing before we’ve even started.
Women take longer to reach orgasm and pre-intimacy is key – take your time
and don’t rush. Thank you.

11. Turning down sex is NOT a big deal
More often than not, if we turn down sex, it probably has nothing to do
with you. We all have our down days – exhaustion, stress, worry? They’re
all major mood killers. It happens – don’t take it personally.

12. Help us
There’s nothing more irritating than a lazy man. Try helping us out with
household chores, the school run and daily errands. It’s just as much your
responsibility as it is ours.

13. Sometimes we need ‘me time’
Most of the time you can’t get us to shut-up, but sometimes we need a
little ‘me time’. If your woman seems relaxed and says nothing’s wrong,
there probably isn’t. Chill out dude.

14. Learn to say sorry
Stop being so stubborn! If it’s your fault and you’re clearly in the wrong
you owe it to us. Go on, say the magic word. Sorry can go a long way in
relationships…

15. Sometimes we really do feel like sh*t
Men think women are attention seekers most of the time, but sometimes we
actually do feel like crap. Don’t forget those painful cramps, headaches and
PMS. Periods are hell to deal with – give us a break.

16. Toilet humour
While poo talk is comical at times, sending us a Snapchat of what you ate
for dinner yesterday is not our idea of a hot date. Enough said.

17. Take care of your hygiene
Brushed your teeth? Showered? Deodorized? You’re a grown ass man, just do
it already.

18. Know yourself
We need to be on the same page. If a man knows what he wants and is
self-assured they’re a lot less likely to seek fulfilment in pointless things
like getting wasted with mates and talking to 10 other chicks, (for which
there’s zero tolerance for by the way).

19. Do not forget our anniversary or birthday
There are 365 days in a year and you only have to remember two of them,
that’s why we get pissed off. Set a reminder on your phone, write it in your
planner or tell your mom if you have to (just don’t tell us you did), but
whatever you do, do NOT forget.

20. Respect us
Some men don’t value their partners as much as they should. Love her like
it’s your last day, appreciate her for all that she is and be grateful for
everything she does. Think about it.

21. We’re suckers for romance
Never ask a girl if she wants flowers, or anything in fact. The answer is
simply YES. Of course we do! Especially, if it’s to do with rose petals,
candles, dinner and wine.

22. Cook us dinner
There’s nothing sexier than a man who knows his way around the kitchen.

23. Things from the heart count
If you’ve ever thought of making a super sweet gift like a homemade card,
scrapbook or a mixed CD and thought, ‘too cheesy’, you’re wrong! It’s a
great way of speaking from the heart especially since guys aren’t always so
good at it (verbally). We’re guaranteed to love it.

24. You can’t live without us
Men often take women for granted, but in reality you’re nothing without
us! Who else would take care of you? Play dress up? Make you a better
man? Just admit it.

So what do your think?

Romance / Just For Fun: 4 Nigerian Songs You’ve Been Singing Wrong All Your Life by simtosul: 4:47pm On Jun 18, 2016
Everyone waxes nostalgic when they
remember their childhoods. If you had
a bad childhood, don’t worry I’m about
to ruin the ones of those that had good
ones.
Growing up in Naija, we had some
songs we’ve been singing since we
were toddlers. We learnt these songs
and joined the multitude that has
been singing it wrong for ages.
Here are some songs that many
Nigerians have been singing wrong
since they were kids:

1. Sandalili Sandalili
Every primary school child from the
90’s knows this song. We sang it and
we were proud. But did you know
we’ve been singing it all wrong
since time immemorial?
The correct thing is Standard living,
standard living.
I wonder how we made the jump
from standard living to sandalili.

2. The most excellency is Jesus
This is another song many Christians
sing. I bet you will hear this when
you go to church on Sunday. The
correct wording is:
The most excellent king is Jesus.
Don’t worry, it is okay to cry.

3. Jangilova epo motor
This was another favourite of us
when it comes to playing games. I
wonder where we got Jangilova
when it is:
Jingle over like a motor

4. Osingo Osingo, Praise the Lord
This song is actually “O sing my soul,
praise the Lord”. But as Nigerians,
we have invented our own version
lol.

Politics / Buhari To Implement Yar’adua’s Agreement With Niger-Delta Militants by simtosul: 4:40am On Jun 05, 2016
President Muhammadu Buhari is currently studying the gazette signed by late President Umaru Yar’Adua on the Niger Delta crisis as one of the possible ways of tackling the renewed violence being orchestrated by the Niger Delta Avengers in the region, SUNDAY PUNCH has learnt.

The purpose of revisiting the gazette, it was further learnt, was to ensure that all the agreements contained in the document were implemented by the Federal Government.

The development is coming at a time the destruction of oil facilities in the Niger Delta by the militants has crippled crude oil production and power supply.

By Friday, power generation was said to have dropped to 2,832.5MW because of the attacks.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Femi Adesina, confirmed to our correspondent on Saturday that the Federal Government was doing all within its ability to restore peace to the Niger Delta.

Adesina listed some of the steps being taken to include consultations and the revisiting of the document signed by the late President.

“Every effort is being made to restore calmness to the Niger Delta, including consultation, and taking a fresh look at the gazette signed by the Umaru Yar’Adua government, so that the agreements contained therein will be implemented,” the presidential spokesman said.

The Senior Special Assistant to President on National Assembly Matters (Senate), Senator Ita Enang, had at a press conference on Friday confirmed that some of officials of the Federal Government were already holding discussions on how to end the violence.

Enang had said some ministers along with top government officials from the Niger Delta had opened talks with the governors and aggrieved people from the region on how to resolve the conflict.

He said the government was prepared to peacefully resolve the conflict.

He listed Federal Government’s representatives currently engaging in dialogue with the stakeholders in Niger Delta to include the Minister of Interior, Gen. Abdulrahman Dambazau (retd.); Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Usani Uguru; Co-ordinator, Amnesty Office, Gen. Paul Boroh (retd.) and other ministers from the region.

He said, “The Minister of Niger Delta, the Minister of Interior, the Coordinator of the Amnesty Office have been taking actions consistent with their powers and with what I know, almost all the ministers and officers from the Niger Delta region have returned to their respective states, zones and blocks to talk to their leaders and their aggrieved persons on the need for us to maintain peace.

“That is going on and they are the representatives of Mr. President. I will not tell you what Mr. President wants to do in person but these are officers and offices which are dealing with this matter.”

Crime / Army Arrests Seven Fake Military Personnel In Rivers by simtosul: 5:13am On Jun 04, 2016
The Nigerian Army in Port Harcourt has arrested seven men for allegedly parading themselves as army and navy personnel in Rivers and environs.
The Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 2 Brigade, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Capt. Eli Lazarus, presented the suspects to journalists on Friday.
He said one suspect, used the army uniform for illegal bunkering, while others impersonated military personnel to defraud unsuspecting individuals and companies.
Lazarus listed the suspects as Abba Ibrahim (40), Lucky Nyeke (32), Abba Mohammed (25), Godwin Okeke (25), Tijjani Kano (29), John Inuwa (29) and Gabriel Ameh (44).
“On June 1, troops from 2 Brigade arrested one Abba Ibrahim 40, along Bodo in Gokana while fully dressed in military camouflage uniform with the badge of rank of Captain.
“Ibrahim was sighted alone by our men, who became suspicious and when questioned could not provide answers satisfactorily.
“The suspect revealed that he was dismissed from the Nigerian Army in 2008 as a Sergeant, and while being interrogated confessed to using the uniform to facilitate illegal oil bunkering.
“One Toyota Hilux vehicle with registration number Cross River GGJ 561 AA and refined automotive gasoline oil loaded in the vehicle were recovered from the suspect,” the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) quoted the army spokesman as saying on the matter.

Religion / Collapsed Synagogue Building Had No Structural Engineer – Witness by simtosul: 5:04am On Jun 04, 2016
A witness, Dr. Olusegun Oyenuga, told the Lagos
High Court, Ikeja, on Friday that the collapsed
seven-storey guest house of Synagogue Church of
All Nations had no structural engineer.
Oyenuga made the statement in the trial of two
engineers arraigned on 111- count charge of gross
negligence and criminal manslaughter in the deaths
of 116 people, including 85 South Africans, in the
building, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)
reports.
“There was no structural engineer for Synagogue to
the best of our knowledge. During the compilation
of the report into the cause of the collapsed
building, no structural engineer for the church came
forward.
“The court needs to educate the public that every
structure needs a structural engineer.
“A civil engineer is not necessarily a structural
engineer unless registered by the Council of
Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN),” he
said.
The engineer, who was led in evidence by the
Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mrs. Idowu
Alakija, told the court how investigations into the
collapsed building were carried out by his
committee.
“I was a member of the committee that generated a
report on the Synagogue building collapse. COREN
put up an advert that all engineers involved in the
construction of the collapsed building should report
to the COREN office at Ikoyi but no one showed up.
“I and other members of the committee went to the
site of the building collapse to conduct some
analysis and design tests.
“We requested drawings from the church and one
Mr. G.A. Akinfenwa came to our office to drop two
documents, a structural drawing and a calculation
and drawing for beam seven which was a major
beam,” Oyenuga stated.

Politics / Ijaw to FG: Withdraw troops from Niger Delta by simtosul: 4:51am On Jun 04, 2016
• Why we shunned Ogoni flag-off
• Militants attack forcados pipeline, warn Agip
Ijaw leaders from the 78 Ijaw clans, traditional
institutions and socio-political bodies from Bayelsa,
Delta, Rivers, Edo, Akwa Ibom, Ondo and Delta
states met yesterday in Warri for several hours over
the renewed violence in the Niger Delta region,
especially the destruction of critical infrastructure by
the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA).
Many women and children from several Ijaw
communities in Gbaramatu Kingdom, who escaped
the onslaught by soldiers, narrated their ordeals in
the hands of the troops at the meeting.
The meeting convened by the Ijaw National
Congress (INC) exposed the dire humanitarian crisis
in several Ijaw communities of Oporoza; Kunukunu-
Amu; Okokodiagbene; Benikruku; Kurutie; Okerekolo;
Naifor; Azakrama; Kenghangbene; Igoba and several
others.Several Ijaw leaders who spoke at the ceremony
include INC Secretary, Dr. Bibobra Bello Orubebe,
who said: “As we speak, several Ijaw people cannot
be accounted for and their whereabouts, including
status as to whether they are alive or dead, cannot
be ascertained.
“Our people are starving and being molested
without recourse to minimum international human
rights standards in law enforcement.
“Ijaw children who went to write NECO are stranded
and several of our people are in the forest and the
wounded unattended.
“The situation is dire.”
The INC condemned the “use of violence by both
civilians and the federal government” and urged
parties to the crisis to respect the sanctity of
human lives, livelihood, economy, culture and
environment of Ijaw people.
The INC explained that they shunned the invitation
to the flag-off of the UNEP clean-up ceremony at
Ogoni, Rivers State on Thursday because the
government cannot be killing Ijaw people with
soldiers and still expect them to honour the
invitation.
The INC secretary told the Buhari government: “You
cannot kill the Ijaw people and rule successfully.
We are asking the military to open the waterways
for the people to move freely.
“We are appealing to the federal government to
order all the soldiers that have occupied several
Ijaw communities to leave, because we are not
pipeline vandals and members of the Niger Delta
Avengers do not live in these villages.
“The Ijaw indicated interest to work with the Buhari
government after he was sworn in; we sent
representation to the government showing our
intention to work with them, but till date, they have
not reached out to us.
“The INC welcomes the clean up of Ogoni, based
on the UNEP report. We boycotted the ceremony
because you cannot be killing Ijaw people and
expect us to attend.”
Orubebe urged the National Emergency
management Agency (NEMA) and other
humanitarian organisations to send relief materials
to the suffering displaced people.
The Chairman of Kokodiagbene community, Sheriff
Mulade, who was at the meeting, said the suffering
in Gbaramatu communities are enormous.
“Many of the women and children ran into the
swamps when the soldiers arrived. As we speak,
many of them have not been rescued, because the
soldiers have barred all boats from entering and
leaving the communities.
“It is a pathetic situation and we are urging the
soldiers to allow aides to be delivered to them,
because many of them have been in the swamps
since a week ago without food.”
Also, Hendrix Opukeme, another Ijaw leader, said
the Ijaw are peaceful people and do not want
escalation of the crisis and appealled to the Buhari
government to withdraw the troops to avert further
suffering of the displaced people.
A woman, who gave her name as Angela Temowei,
said she was forced to flee Oporoza with her two
children when the soldiers started shooting
indiscriminately.
Temowei added that she has not set eyes on her
husband and his aged mother, saying several
people were still hiding in the swamps, because
there was no way they could escape.
She said she was lucky to make it to Warri,
because she left when the first batch of soldiers
arrived.
Another displaced person, Lepe Kenekuma, said: “I
hid in the roof of a house for two days before I
decided to swim to back of Oporoza, where I
paddled a canoe to a location, where I was rescued
by a boat operator.”
He said the military had shut down the waterways
and barred boats from reaching displaced people.
Kenekuma urged Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa
to assist his distressed citizens.
Meanwhile, the Niger Delta Avengers (NDA)
yesterday bombed the 48-inch Forcados export
pipeline at Forcados export terminal.

Politics / Ekiti Workers Shun Meeting With Fayose, Insist On Strike by simtosul: 5:11am On Jun 01, 2016
Public workers in Ekiti State on Tuesday shunned the meeting called by the state government to resolve the ongoing strike in the state.

The workers on Thursday began an indefinite strike to press home the demand for the payment of five months’ salaries arrears of workers among other issues.

The meeting, scheduled for Tuesday (yesterday), followed a declaration by Governor Ayodele Fayose to invoke the doctrine of “no-work, no-pay” in the face of labour’s insistence to continue with the strike.

It was to be attended by the chairmen and secretaries of the Nigeria Labour Congress, the Trade Union Congress, the Joint Negotiating Council, the Nigeria Union of Teachers, the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees and the Academic Staff Union of Secondary Schools.

But the labour leaders failed to show up for the meeting. Instead, the secretaries of the NLC, TUC and JNC wrote the state government and asked for a new date, time and venue.

According to a copy of the letter sighted by our correspondent, the unions said the meeting should be rescheduled in the interest of peace. A leader of the labour told our correspondent that the unions took the decision because of the protest staged by driver unions against the strike earlier in the day.

“The leadership of organised labour has met this morning and resolved that in the interest of peace, security of life and property, the proposed meeting should be rescheduled to another day/date and venue,” the letter said.

Earlier on Tuesday, some artisans and commercial drivers, under the aegis of the Concerned Trade Unions in Ekiti State, had staged anti-workers’ protests in Ado Ekiti, accusing the leadership of labour of taking N25m bribe to destabilise the Fayose-led government.

The protesters, led by the Chairmen of Road Transport Employers’ Association of Nigeria, Mr. Samuel Agbede, and the National Union of Road Transport Workers, Clement Adekola, alleged that the ongoing strike was politically-motivated.

The protesters, who carried placards with various inscriptions, gathered at the popular Fajuyi Park and marched to the Ijigbo area of the state capital to mobilise support for Fayose’s government.

Politics / We Won’t Back Down, Militants Tell FG by simtosul: 4:55am On Jun 01, 2016
Navy arrrests five suspects for bombing NNPC
pipelines
Tobi Soniyi, Damilola Oyedele in Abuja, Sylvester
Idowu in Warri and Emmanuel Addeh in Yenagoa.

Meanwhile, militant group, the Niger Delta Avengers,
said yesterday that in spite of the federal
government’s deployment of fighter jets and the
military in Delta State, it would not relent in its
violent attacks on critical oil installations in the
region.

The group, which said the heavy presence of the
military would not stop them from their planned
action that would shock the whole world, noted that
Gbaramatu, now under military siege, was just one
kingdom out the several Ijaw kingdoms spread
across seven states.

The group, in a statement signed by its
Spokesman, Brig-Gen Mudoch Agbinibo, said
emphatically, “it is not our business what goes on
in Gbaramatu Kingdom but our concern is the
innocent children, women and aged people whom
the Nigerian military has chased away from their
homes now taking refuge in the forest”.

It alleged that some people (names withheld)
benefitting from contracts for pipeline surveillance
were behind the military invasion of Gbaramatu
Kingdom in the guise of looking for the Niger Delta
Avengers.

It queried: “The question is, why the innocent
people of Gbaramatu, why the innocent pregnant
women, why unleash terror on the aged people of
Gbaramatu? Must you waste all these innocent
blood just to secure the pipeline surveillance job?”
The militant group berated the International
Community and the United Nations for looking the
other way while the military occupied the kingdom.
The NDA also took a swipe on Tompolo for
accepting the treatment being meted on his people
wondering whether he would still refer to them as
criminals.

The railings of the militants provided the
opportunity for the Nigerian Army of not wanting to
embrace dialogue yesterday.

The Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tukur Buratai, who
was represented by Brig.-Gen. J. Hamakim, at the
‘State of the Nation Conference’, organised by the
Nigerian Bar Association in Abuja yesterday said the
Army had not ruled out dialogue with the group
Speaking on the activities of the Niger Delta
Avengers in the oil rich region, Hamakim said that
dialogue with the group was not yet a realistic
option.

He was responding to a submission that
government should explore dialogue with the Niger
Delta militants instead of applying force that could
further worsen the nation’s oil production in the
region.

Hamakim, said in his response, that there was no
sign that the Niger Delta Avengers’ members were
ready for dialogue.

He said: “I quite agree that dialogue is very
important. But where it is not too obvious that the
adversary is ready to come out and talk, you can
also force such a person.

“I think that is what the Nigeria Army is trying to
do. Yes, we don’t know the group’s leader, for now;
that is the only option, possibly we have to bring
the people out to know who you can dialogue with.”
He said the activities of the group were affecting oil
production as the nation’s production had recently
further plummeted to 1.1 million barrels per day.
He debunked the allegation that soldiers who were
involved in the operations in Gbaramatu were killing
innocent residents and raped women.

“We have done our investigation and nothing like
that is happening,” he said.
He also said the demonstrations by Indigenous
Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) leading to a clash between
the protesters and security forces in Onitsha on
Monday, were not peaceful.

Hamakim said: “Remember that lives were lost,
policemen were killed, some were thrown overboard
and the military has rules of engagement.
“The question is how peaceful is the peaceful
demonstration. How peaceful was the
demonstration at that time? If it was that peaceful,
how come we lost security agencies.

“The rule of engagement is that if you feel
threatened, you have the mandate to respond. What
we can say is, that was not at all a demonstration
that you can say was peaceful.”

He regretted that other security agencies in the
country had been “overwhelmed”, a situation which
he said had necessitated the Army to move “from
the last line of defence to the first line of defence”.
In a related development, the Flag Officer Central
Naval Command, Yenagoa, Commodore Mohammed
Garba, said last night that five suspects had been
arrested in connection with the bombings of NNPC
crude pipelines in Batan community in Warri South
West Local Government.

Briefing journalists at the NNS Delta, Warri,
Commodore Garba disclosed that two of the
suspects have been moved to another military
location.

He said another three were arrested while siphing
crude oil from an oil well head close to the
bombed Batan community where the NNPC crude
lines were bombed in Batan community.

Commodore Garba denied intimidation of innocent
people in the search for members of the Niger Delta
Avengers (NDA) in both Delta and Bayelsa States.
He said the operations were in line with international
best practices noting that the “enemies of the state
are resorting to propaganda to win sympathy.
The naval boss explained that the deployment of
fighter jets and gun ships were to aide the Joint
Military operations going on in the region.

But spokesman of Gbaramatu Kingdom, Chief
Godspower Gbenekama, has accused President
Muhammadu of not having a grasp of the issues in
the Niger Delta.

‘’He’s in power , but he cannot grasp the issues in
the Niger Delta. He was in the military, but he was
mostly about capturing, molesting and gaining
ground for the government. But in a democratic
government it’s not like that.

‘’He’s still saying he’s going after this and that. He
can go after criminal elements but a situation where
you make people less human, doesn’t make sense,’’
the Ijaw chief said.

He added: “He (Buhari) should change his approach
of ‘I will kill you, I will destroy you’. The avengers
have a bad approach, but what is pushing them is
beyond the knowledge of the president.

‘’A holistic approach is needed, the amnesty
programme is just scratching the problem. The
problem of molestation, deprivation, hunger and
telling the people that they are not good enough to
be educated. Stopping work at the maritime school
is saying the same thing’’, he said.

In another development, some lawmakers from the
Niger Delta have warned the military against
compounding the crisis in the region.

Reacting yesterday to the invasion of Gbaramatu
community in Delta State by the heavily armed
soldiers, who claimed to be looking for members of
the Niger Delta Avengers, a new militant group who
had recently claimed responsibility on the attacks
of oil facilities, Hon. Daniel Reyeneiju, representing
Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State, said
deployment of troops and aerial bombardment to
the region was a wrong move and may aggravate
the situation.

Speaking with THISDAY, the lawmaker said the
same hard approach had been deployed in the
region before, and only served to aggravate the
militancy.

Reyeneiju recalled that at the height of militancy at
the inception of the late President Umaru Musa
Yar’Adua Administration, oil production dropped
from 2.2 million bpd to 800,000.
“We must have institutional memory, and be able to
examine how the issues were resolved then,” he
said.

He said that while it is necessary to bring those
involved in ‘’economic sabotage’’ to justice,
deployment of troops — who would harass innocent
civilians, is also an act of injustice against the
people of the region.

“Nobody seems to know what has caused the
resurgence of militancy in the region, because even
the Avengers have not come out with any demands,
and this makes us all worried,” Reyeneiju said.
He advised the federal government to work closely
with the state governments and leaders of the Niger
Delta states.

In the same vein, Hon. Diri Nonye from Bayelsa
said the scenario of the Odi invasion, where several
civilians were killed by soldiers, is being replayed.
“Vandals have destroyed and on the run, innocent
Ijaw residents are now targets of military invasion.
This is not acceptable,” he said.

Nonye called in the military to be proactive and
properly target the vandals involved in destruction
of pipelines, instead of harassing civilians.
On his part, Hon. Kingsley Chinda (Rivers PDP)
lamented that the current administration, even
though a civilian one, seems bent on militarising
the Nigerian state.

“It is unconscionable to assault, harass and
gruesomely murder innocent citizens including
pregnant women under the guise of searching for
perceived criminals’’, Chinda said.

“This marks the difference between a civilian
democrat and military born again Democrat. I call
on the commander of the armed forces to
immediately withdraw the solders and fight crime in
line with the rule of law and conscionable
standards.”

Politics / Lack Of Funds Won’t Stop Ogoni Clean-up - Amina Mohammed by simtosul: 4:42am On Jun 01, 2016
As President Muhammadu Buhari flags off the cleanup of the Niger Delta on Thursday (tomorrow), beginning from Ogoniland in Rivers State, the Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the exercise will not stop until it is completed.

It stated that it had put in place adequate measures that would ensure the sustenance of the clean-up exercise in the region and urged residents of the affected areas to support the government as the programme begins.

The Minister of Environment, Mrs. Amina Mohammed, who disclosed this on Tuesday, observed that aside the fact that there was already a $1bn commitment for the programme, some other government agencies and international oil companies would be involved in providing funds for the cleaning of the Niger Delta.

Mohammed spoke during a live television programme monitored by our correspondent in Abuja.

Asked to explain how the government intends to continuously provide funds for the sustenance of the clean-up exercise which, according to experts, would last for several years, the minister replied, “I doubt that the work will stop. I think first and foremost, the ‘Polluter Pays’ principle is up and doing and oil companies are paying for what they do.

“In this particular case, there’s been a commitment of $1bn and the governance structure that we are putting in place involves the governing council, which will determine the programme and how the road map is being implemented. But then, there is also a board of trustees where a trust fund for that money will be put and we hope to have fund managers who can begin to leverage that.

“Investors in the Niger Delta abound by a number of agencies. The Ministry of Niger Delta has a budget and they are part of this. Therefore, we look forward to ensure that we are working in the same direction. And aside from cleaning up the area, we will be looking at making it economically buoyant through diversification.”

Mohammed urged residents of the Niger Delta to show interest in the exercise, stressing that the President would be there in person to start the cleanup programme.

She said, “We can clean up the polluted fish ponds and the soil in Ogoni, but we’ve got to have buy-ins from the community to want to protect their environment and to see good things come out of it. Ogoniland is going to be our starting point, but the rest of the Niger Delta is also polluted in heavy ways, perhaps even more than Ogoniland.”

On responses gotten from the affected communities as regards the clean-up exercise, Mohammed said, “Everybody believes in President Buhari. The integrity of our President is what people believe in and they hope that something can happen. But right now, I’m particular about sustainability. However, the launch is incredibly important. It is historic and it tells the struggle, but what is more important is what comes after.”

Speaking further on plans by the ministry to access funds to address other environmental challenges across the country, the minister said the Nigerian government would tap from the resources that were made available during the recent Paris Agreement.
