It is quite unthinkable for you to leave your phone at home. It is the 21st century and the era of the technology evolution where a phone is as important as the air you breath in. You can make and receive calls, access the internet and do a plethora of things with your phone. Despite this, you may inadvertently leave your phone at home. It is difficult but if it happens, Jumia Travel, Africa’s No 1 hotel booking portal share 5 reasons not worry too much if you leave your phone at home.

No distractions

While driving, working or exercising, your phone can be a major distraction. It may ring, constantly receive social media or text notifications. And of course, you may want to catch-up with trending news on social media and your favourite website. But without your phone, you will be able to concentrate and focus.

You will be able to connect with people

For many people, phones take most of their attention. They don’t listen when they are communicating and very few people visit friends when they can simply chat. If for a day you leave your phone at home, you will no doubt have quality conversations, especially with friends and co-workers.

Enjoy your vacation

A break from work can easily be ended by a phone call. This is why some employees go incommunicado when they are on leave or vacation. So, be grateful if you forget or leave your phone at home. It is no cause for anxiety.

Peace and quiet

Phones ringing, listening to music via Bluetooth headphones and a temporary break from social media. These are the things you enjoy when you are with your phone. A day without your phone will help you experience peace and quiet of your ambience and observe what is happening around you.

You will save money on call cards

Forgetting your phone may be another way to save money in this economic recession. If you calculate the cash you spend on call cards, you will be glad you forgot your phone even though it can be very inconvenient for you.

Science/Technology / 4 Possible Ways Technology Can Drive Nigeria’s Economy Out Of Recession by sleeksavbvy: 11:12am On Sep 09, 2016
As the price of oil continues to nosedive globally and the Nigerian economy is in recession, this has resulted to cutting in government expenditure and the loss of jobs.

But an interesting thing that is happening in this recession is that sectors that have been ignored for years are being given attention by the Nigerian government. One of such industries is the Nigerian tech space.

Technology in Nigeria has continued to grow since the turn of the decade. Today, there are hundreds of tech startups, tech ecosystem and incubation hubs making a significant contribution to the Nigerian economy. This is long before the crash of oil prices.

The biggest recognition offered to the Nigerian tech space so far is the visit of Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Facebook. This even makes it important to note that it is possible for technology to drive Nigeria out of the current economic recession. Jumia Travel, Africa’s No 1 hotel booking portal shares 4 possible ways technology can drive Nigeria’s economy out of recession.

Partnership with incubation hubs

Incubation hubs are dotted all over Nigeria including Lagos. In fact, Yaba has been tagged as the country’s Silicon Valley because of the presence of many tech startups, incubation hubs and e-commerce businesses. Leading the incubation hub pack is Co-Creation hub (CC Hub). These incubation hubs are already working with startups and a public-private partnership with them will go a long way.

Support tech startups

The government is already doing this as it recently organized a technology Demo day where 30 selected startups showcased their businesses and ideas in Abuja. If more of these events are organized, it will provide much-needed funds for these startups.

Tax breaks for e-commerce businesses

Technology has a huge impact on the e-commerce industry. They employ thousands of Nigerians. While concerted efforts are being made to prevent job losses, e-commerce businesses are groaning due to the recession and lack of infrastructure. But, if these e-commerce businesses are granted tax breaks, there will be a decline in job losses and more people will even be employed.

Take advantage of angel investors

Facebook invested over $24 million in Andela in Nigeria. Andela is a tech hub where future tech engineers are trained. There are many bigger tech companies and angel investors with blank checks looking to invest in these tech startups. Of course, since technology is not based on oil, it will attract more investors. Hence, tech startups can take advantage of them.

Travel / 5 Reasons Why You Should Adventure With Your Baby by sleeksavbvy: 8:59am On Aug 15, 2016
It's a tedious task to combine traveling and caring for your baby at the same time especially for adventurous mothers. Most of them prefer to give up their dream to explore for the welfare of their child. This is not helped by the fact that in Africa and Nigeria especially, it is the sole responsibility of the female folk to oversee the proper upbringing of kids. And oftentimes than not, they are blamed if the child turns out to be a societal menace. So, rather than face these societal backlashes, some decide to jettison their career and travel.

But, over the years and due to economic factors, more women are working and traveling even though they have babies. In line with this, Jumia Travel, Africa's No.1 hotel booking portal shares five reasons why you should adventure with your baby instead of giving up travelling entirely. It's noteworthy to add that traveling doesn't prevent you from taking good care of your children.

Traveling with a baby may be stressful but it’s cheap

Adventurous mothers who think that it is expensive to travel with a baby can now rest that perception. It is quite affordable to travel with kids. Besides, you may spend little or no extra cash at any restaurants, resorts or hotels you visit in Lagos or your preferred destination. On your part, ensure that you take adequate care of him.

Your child will be closer to you

While some mothers may allow a nanny to care for their babies, others will not. They favour travelling with him everywhere they go. This is because they want to be present in the upbringing of the baby and also travel.

Babies are easily entertained

You cannot stop a child from crying but the onus is on you to pet him to stop bawling his intestines. Some ways to stop him from crying are either by breastfeeding or by patronizing him with toys.

Kids don’t need so much gear

Kids don’t need shoes or sleeping bags. They can still do without these items. All they need are feeding bottles, change of clothes as well as the love and care of the mother.

Your baby will be your travel companion

Babies or toddlers may be the last travel companion anyone wants to travel with. They will always be restless. But the fact is that a mother cherishes every moment she spends with her child and some of them appreciate having him as a travel companion.
Travel / Five (5) Slangs That Make You A Confirmed Lagosian by sleeksavbvy: 4:02pm On Aug 12, 2016
Lagos is Nigeria’s melting pot. It’s the dream destination for most people who reside in nearby cities and rural communities. Everyone believes Lagos is a city where dreams come true, regardless of your means of livelihood. That’s why you find almost everyone in this great cosmopolitan city that is home to over 20 million people, according to recent statistics. In fact, it was estimated that Lagos might become over-populated because of the high influx of migrants from other states, and/or neighbouring countries. This may be the reason why some Nigerians refer to it as a no-man’s land, because it has become a convergence point for all and sundry.

The journey to becoming a confirmed (true) Lagosian is filled with many road bumps. Once you’re strong-willed enough to cross, you will earn yourself the title of a true Lagosian - a title so lofty in glory. Some of these road bumps might include your ability to survive the hustle, the street food, the street life as well as having an up-to-date understanding of the contemporary slangs.

These slangs are essential because it is the way most people communicate in the city, and being able to decode and dialogue in these slangs will make anyone a confirmed Lagosian. So, whether you live on the Island or mainland, you should be conversant with these slangs. Jumia Travel, Africa’s No 1 hotel booking portal shares five (5) of these contemporary slangs that might earn you the confirmed Lagosian title:

Owambe

Owambe simply means social events held on weekends, such as weddings. Lagosians love to attend ‘owambes’ because it provides a unique opportunity to mingle especially if you’re single; you get to show off your colourful Aso Ebi, and spend quality time with friends and family. Interestingly, Owambe has outgrown its original Yoruba connotation to become a cliche for describing weekend social events among Lagosians.

Okrika

Okrika is an Igbo phrase which is widely used to describe cheap second-hand items sold at open spaces. Okrika may include clothes, shoes, bags, electronic devices and phones. A good number of Lagosians patronise these items because they are mostly affordable.

Shine your eyes

Because of the high number of residents, minus frequent commuters who come into the city for business functions, it is not surprising to find the good, the bad, and the ugly cohabitating. Hence, you have to constantly be on the alert if you don’t want to experience the sneaky hands of the bad eggs, because these hands strike faster than lightning and thunder. So shine your eyes while driving, standing at the bus stop, or when engaging in any transactions.

Johnny Just Come (JJC)

Who is Johnny? Of course, Johnny is somebody’s name. But it means something completely different if you are addressed by that in Lagos. JJC is someone that arrived recently in Lagos and perhaps cannot navigate the city without a guide. If your demeanour gives evidence of a JJC, bus conductors are usually excited about the prospect of taking advantage of you by hiking the transport fare, or perhaps you may be driven beyond your bus stop. There are some people who can still be tagged Johnny even though they’ve lived for years in the city. In any case, do not act like a JJC if you want to be a confirmed Lagosian.

Agbero

Agbero is a Yoruba word for bus conductors who hail passengers. However, the name has abandoned its original meaning and has submitted itself to being used to describe thugs who collect money from commercial motorists for picking passengers at the bus stops, and may resort to assault if the money is being withheld by the drivers. Refusal to pay this levy may lead to heated argument, harassment or unnecessary delays. In fact, passengers always encourage drivers to settle these Agberos to avoid unnecessary confrontations.
Science/Technology / 3 Practical Ways To Protect Your Phone Screen by sleeksavbvy: 3:10pm On Aug 08, 2016
With smarter screens taking over the mobile phone scene, phone screens are getting bigger and bigger; however, not all of these smartphones come with tough or scratch-resistant touch screen panels.

As a result, a number of Nigerians with iPhones or Android phones have to deal with broken or damaged screens on a daily basis. Generally, it takes a lot to break and damage these smartphones, but on the other hand, it’s not impossible if you behave recklessly with your device. If you are looking to keep your phone screen alive and safe, Jumia Travel offers tips on how to protect your smartphone screen.

Be gentle with your phone screen
Most smartphones come with touch screens and as such, users are required to tap or type on the screen. To avoid damage, try not to tap your phone with any sharp objects or bang it to make it work if it’s being slow. Also, do not apply too much pressure on the phone screen especially when playing a game as too much pressure can lead to damage or even a crack, depending on the kind of screen used.

Be careful when wiping your display screen
It is important to wipe your phone’s display screen as most times it becomes blurry after frequent use. Rather than use a wet tissue or any kind of rag that would leave more particles on the screen, ensure you use a microfiber cloth. You can even use the one that came with your sunglasses. If you must use a damp wipe, make sure it is slightly damp and do not over-rub. Also, let your phone air dry afterwards that way, water does not accidentally escape into the phone’s inner hardware.

Use a Screen Protector and phone case
To protect your phone screen, it is wise to invest in a screen protector, as well as a sleeve or hard case. They are effective for preventing scratches and cracks on phone screen panels. Screen protectors, especially the glass ones do not usually affect screen sharpness, meaning that you do not see a difference on your screen when having a protective layer. Even better, they are usually affordable.

Travel / 6 Exciting Ways Singles Can Mingle While On Tour by sleeksavbvy: 6:03pm On Aug 05, 2016
Going on tour can be a reliable way for singles to meet persons who can later become lovers. Touring a place like Badagry or Olumo rock with a group of strangers can offer you a whole new experience. And as a single who desires a relationship, one way to meet people is travelling. However, for some singles, they find it difficult to mingle when they are in a crowd or group. They are either too shy or timid to blend in. To halt this trend, Jumia Travel, Africa’s No 1 hotel booking portal shares some ideas on how you can mingle on tour. Hence, in the not too far future, you will be in a loving relationship.

Dress well

A good dress sense is the first thing that attracts others to you. You do not need to break the bank to appear elegant. The rule of thumb should be simplicity and class.

Make friends with yourself

The most reliable way to overcome timidity is to be friends with yourself and you will never be alone. Even when you are single and timid, you don’t need anybody to make you happy. Your happiness will radiate and before you know, everyone wants to talk to you even though you know you are nervous when it comes to mingling.

Smile always

The truth is people will always prefer to talk to someone who smiles. It reveals that beyond the façade, you are a happy, pleasant and amazing person. Nobody wants to communicate with someone who is always keeping a straight face.

img-20160718-wa021
Don’t shy away from games

There are so many fun things to do on tour. To help you mingle, you should volunteer to participate in games. This will get you noticed by everyone. Before you know, you are talking to a potential soul mate.

Give the ‘green light’ if interested

Guys don’t have a problem wooing a girl. But some guys look out for the green light. Greenlight is a nonverbal way of informing someone that he/she can approach. If they look or smile at you, you respond the same way. It doesn’t give anything away.

Accept an invite for a date

If both of you are interested, you can exchange phone numbers and also accept the invitation for a date. Hence, it is important for you to keep in touch after the tour.
TV/Movies / 6 Interesting Yet Annoying Things About Nollywood Movies by sleeksavbvy: 10:58am On Aug 05, 2016
Nollywood is the sobriquet for Nigeria’s film industry. The industry is currently witnessing a boom as it churns out new and exciting movies. So, there is little or no argument when it is described as the third largest movie industry in the world.

Now, a good number of Nigerians are watching Nollywood movies alongside Hollywood movies. At the same, they are visiting cinemas to watch these sterling movies made by prolific producers like Kunle Afolayan, Lancelot Imasuen, Emem Isong and Tunde Kelani, among others in locations like Lagos, Calabar, and Enugu.

Despite all these accolades, there is still a long way for these movies to go to compete favourably with Hollywood and Bollywood. This is because there are still some petty and trivial things that you see in these movies. This can easily put viewers off. In line with this, Jumia travel, Africa’s No 1 hotel booking portal identifies some of these annoying things.

Easily predictable

In some cases, the title of the movie will give you a fair idea of the plot. And if you decide to watch the movie, with 100% certainty you can tell what is happening next. Often times than not, Nigerians who watch Nollywood movies do not look forward to the climax and its resolution. Thus, due to this predictability, they easily lose interest.

Irrelevant sequels

You must have questioned why they are wasting so much time at a particular scene. The answer is that the producer wants the film to have a sequel. Definitely, you know that the movie doesn’t need one. But the thinking of the producer is different as the movie can have like 3 sequels with different[ titles.

No storyline or plot

Some Nollywood movies have no plot or storyline. It seems like they hurriedly gathered actors and actresses to just act a script that has no story. This leaves some Nigerian film enthusiasts to question why they wasted time watching the movie.

Some accident or shooting scenes are a write

Accident or shooting scenes in most Nollywood movies are a write-off. For those who are addicted to Hollywood and watch the same scene in a Nollywood film, you will be awed at the way the act is poorly done. This is a major scene that producers need to improve.

Terrible subtitles

Many Nigerians now watch indigenous language movies especially Yoruba movies. But one flaw about these movies is that it is poorly subtitled. So, the movie is restricted to those who can only fathom the language.

Too much witchcraft

Witchcraft has become one way to identify Nollywood movies and this not good for the image of the country. As a result, Many Nollywood enthusiasts frown at this very negative portrayal.

Career / How Do You Cope When Sacked? by sleeksavbvy: 9:58am On Dec 18, 2015
I work in a company that you walk in but do not know if you will return the next day due to the threat of sack pervading the air. Close friends that you known for weeks have been unceremoniously kicked out.

The prayer that nearly everyone mutters in the office is thatThis will never get to me by the grace of God. However, lets face reality, what if it happens inadvertently? How do you think one can cope with it? This economic situation we are in is not smiling for many companies in Nigeria. They are cutting cost. So I will appreciate your response. Thanks!!!
