@ID olajide

You want to have almost absolute knowledge, go for software dev. Good a thing I studied Physics too. I advise u to gpt fpr software dev (just like I did).

Go for Java or .NET (C# option).

Good luck.

@xanadu, welcome.

Check this:
Topic: Classes or Linear Programming

It is very interesting how some developers have neglected the use of classes these days. I have worked with some organizations that have never heard of classes one way or the other. Let me use this opportunity to state the advantages of using classes (the ones I can remember):

i. Class encapsulates;
ii. Makes ur programming easier to maintain;
iii. Promotes readability;
iv. Oh sorry, Class is the core central of OOP: add any advantage that you think OOP has.

Please Note that all my postings in this forum shall come in classes (method, interface, property , ).

Good luck.
Programming / Let Share Codes by SmartK1(m): 1:53pm On Sep 11, 2007
Hi guys,
I have been nursing the idea of starting my blog for some times now but I have been very busy doing office work.
I have seen wonders that have been done in nairaland by developers. I feel its high time we truly help each other. I created this forum to serve as a forum where a developer can meet and help other developers. Mainly
i. Lets share general codes: I mean keep your business rules and share codes that are needed almost everywhere;
ii. Post any question(s) bothering you and possibly I or any other developer might find an answer to it;
iii. Lets share concepts and ideas.

Warning: I am MS developer, meaning I may be able to assist on VB, VB.NET, C, C++, C#, OOP only. Notwithstanding, I have done a little JAVA in the past (or I may ask some colleagues in my office). I may also assist on Javascript, PHP, etc.

So, LET US SHARE.

Good Luck.
Programming / Re: 10 Reasons Why .NET Is Better Than Java by SmartK1(m): 11:10am On Sep 11, 2007
@enohj2ee
Arguments for J2EE and against .NET
J2EE is being marketed by an entire industry
J2EE is a proven platform, with a few new web services APIs. .NET is a rewrite and introduces risk as with any first-generation technology
Only J2EE lets you deploy web services today
Existing J2EE code will translate into a J2EE web services system without major rewrites. Not true for Windows DNA code ported to .NET.
.NET web services are not interoperable with current industry standards. Their BizTalk framework has proprietary SOAP extensions and does not support ebXML.
J2EE is a more advanced programming model, appropriate for well-trained developers who want to build more advanced object models and take advantage of performance features
J2EE lets you take advantage of existing hardware you may have
J2EE gives you platform neutrality, including Windows. You also get good (but not free) portability. This isolates you from heterogeneous deployment environments.
J2EE has a better legacy integration story through the Java Connector Architecture (JCA)
J2EE lets you use any operating system you prefer, such as Windows, UNIX, or mainframe. Developers can use the environment they are most productive in.
J2EE lets you use Java, which is better than C# due to market-share and maturity. According to Gartner, there are 2.5 million Java developers. IDC predicts this will grow to 4 million by 2003. 78% universities teach Java, and 50% of universities require Java.
We would not want to use any language other than C# or Java for development of new mission-critical solutions, such as a hacked object-oriented version of C, VB, or COBOL.
We are finding most ISVs and consulting companies going with J2EE because they cannot control their customers' target platforms. We believe this application availability will result in J2EE beginning to dominate more and more as time goes on.
In conclusion, while both platforms will have their own market-share, we feel most customers will reap greater wins with J2EE. We feel the advantages outweigh those offered by Microsoft.NET. That is our preferred architecture, and we stand behind it.

When was this article written - 2002.

Please do not quote such info here again. The matter had long been settled b4 you woke up and started copying and pasting. Read the contributions of intelligent guys above and reflect on it.

Good luck.

I should say that I got the habit of using "m_" prefix from java

Enjoy! man. We are all one. Its a matter of preference but I advice u be a team player.

By the way Seun, why don't you try developing some developer tools.
Based on the number of developers I'm seeing on Nairaland, seems it
will sell. Beside that, since you're very familiar with the web, you can
sell your product online.

Developers are the worst targetted for business u know.
i. they dont have money
ii. they dont like to buy: by default they want to crack a good product and pass information on the next developer so that he can respect them
iii. if ur product is good enough, be sure MS would steal it and release a better one next VS
iv,

x. You are an african. DO business not research

GOOD LUCK

:oHi guys,

while i really commend the guys that have been responding on topics presented here i'll appreciate if we can be more truthful and exact. My advise to new beginners on VB6 is : Pack your bags and leave VB6 and dont come back, its outdated. Start with .NET please.

But in case you dont want to take the advice above, google most of ur questions and bring only ones that u could not find in google ( grin grin grin).

I did VB6 and I ave offered what I consider as sincere advice. In case u are in doubt, try my app on (http://www.byaxiom.com/staffmanager.htm) I developed it fully with VB6.0

Good luck.

give a man fish and feed him for a day, teach him how to fish ,

i. visit www.google.com
ii. type exactly that ur question
iii. press Enter

the synonym for the above steps is called 'google it'

Meanwhile try this:

<?php
$myServer = "localhost";
$myUser = "your_name";
$myPass = "your_password";
$myDB = "examples";

//connection to the database
$dbhandle = mssql_connect($myServer, $myUser, $myPass)
or die("Couldn't connect to SQL Server on $myServer"wink;

//select a database to work with
$selected = mssql_select_db($myDB, $dbhandle)
or die("Couldn't open database $myDB"wink;

//declare the SQL statement that will query the database
$query = "SELECT id, name, year ";
$query .= "FROM cars ";
$query .= "WHERE name='BMW'";

//execute the SQL query and return records
$result = mssql_query($query);

$numRows = mssql_num_rows($result);
echo "<h1>" . $numRows . " Row" . ($numRows == 1 ? "" : "s"wink . " Returned </h1>";

//display the results
while($row = mssql_fetch_array($result))
{
echo "<li>" . $row["id"] . $row["name"] . $row["year"] . "</li>";
}
//close the connection
mssql_close($dbhandle);
?>

While I commend the efforts of every developer in nairaland I want us to remember that there are more angles to all these things: JAVA, DOT NET, etc. Dont let us forget about the politics of business.
I am .NET developer and that says a lot about my judgment. Meanwhile I want to call the attention of everybody to that fact that even there is a war going on withing .NET itself (VB vs C#).
My submission: There is always room for improvements and while we argue constructively we will assist a lot in identifying the weaknesses to be corrected.

private string queueName;

public string m_queueName
{
get { return queueName; }
set { queueName = value; }
}

FDeveloper Just a minor correction (to prevent young developers, ): declare private module level variable as m_ and Property name with meaningful name QueueName. Good job sir, I perfectly agree with u - Its a matter of preferred syntax.

I AM HAPPY U GUYS ARE AFRICANS (Nigerians). MORE GREASE,
Programming / Re: My Software Development Journey by SmartK1(m): 5:31pm On Sep 04, 2007
Hu, I have done a little Java, Vb6, C/C++ and now full-time C#/VB .NET developer. I have done Desktop and Web apps. All I can say is that each of them has its ups and downs, just as enumerated above. It depends on the kind of app u are developing , who u are developing it for, etc that dictates whether its desk or web. I have written an HR app on desktop that completely failed (anyway, still hoping it will sell), other desktops that have succeeded: i have a school management app (on desktop) that gives me money which i believe i could not have made much if it was on web. Convincing a principal to hook up permanently with net would not be as sweet as u think.
Just check ur app well and decide. But as for programming language I recommend C#. It can be used for dektop, wep, smartphones etc.
GOOOOOD LUCK.

What category of school?
If A-Level : I recommend SocketWorks College Portal , that's what UI, Igbinedion, UniZik, Convenant, All the Fed Ploy, etc are using, Check it out or visit http://www.socketworksglobal.com/

If O-Level: I recommend Byaxiom SchoolManager, that's new but has been adapted by at least 5 schools in Lagos and some schools outside Lagos. visit http://www.byaxiom.com/schoolmanager.htm for details.

Enjoy.
