Art, Graphics & Video / Youtube Starts Paying Shorts Creators $10,000 Every Month by Smatkomo: 2:31pm On Aug 06, 2021 |
In the last few years, many of the biggest social media companies have been throwing money at creators, trying to get them to embrace their platforms and bring loyal audiences to their apps. Earlier this year, YouTube announced a $100 million fund specifically to pay creators who use the platform's new Shorts format, which just came out of beta and rolled out to 100 countries last month. That fund is now live as of today, so the company is dropping more details on how you can get paid. As YouTube announced earlier this year, the company plans to invite "thousands of eligible creators" to claim a payment from the program from now through 2022; YouTube is offering from $100 to $10,000, depending on how many people watch the Short as well as some other engagement metrics. Anyone posting shorts is theoretically eligible to get picked for a payment, not just creators who participate in the YouTube Partner Program (that's the program YouTube launched 14 years ago so that users could get paid for their content). Naturally, there are a number of standards that these Shorts need to meet to be eligible. Most of them are pretty straightforward, like abiding by YouTube's community guidelines and copyright policies. YouTube also doesn't want people just re-uploading content they created for Snapchat or TikTok, so any Shorts with watermarks or logos from other social networks won't qualify. YouTube says it'll be awarding payments on a monthly basis so interested creators will be incentivized to keep making new Shorts. While YouTube Shorts is a relatively new platform, TikTok has had a similar fund for its creators since 2020. It was announced as a $200 million fund, double what YouTube currently has budgeted for its Shorts fund, and those interested would have to submit their best work. But while TikTok's fund may be larger than this Shorts program, YouTube notes that it has nine other ways for its creators to monetize their content. Not to be outdone, Facebook recently launched its own $1 billion program to lure creators to Instagram as well as its main service. Perhaps more significantly than the sheer dollar value is the fact that Facebook isn't going to collect a cut of creators' revenue through 2022, making a focus on the platform even more potentially lucrative. The size of this move is an admission from Facebook that it's a little behind the curve here; Instagram didn't offer any kind of revenue share until last year, in fact. Between TikTok's massive influence and Facebook's massive war chest aimed at creators, YouTube is going to need to keep offering its users more ways to make cash — and the company knows it. Indeed, it said in today's news that the $100 million fund is the "first step" in its plans to monetize Shorts. https://techglidar.com/2021/08/05/youtube-shorts-creators-can-earn-10000-monthly/ 1 Like

Phones / Federal Government Of Extends NIN-SIM Verification Till October by Smatkomo: 12:02pm On Jul 26, 2021 |
The Federal Government of Nigeria has again extended the deadline for National Identity Number (NIN)-Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) data verification to the 31st of October 2021. Enrolment statistics showed that there have been low enrolments in schools and hospitals therefore the decision is to address this issue and also to consider the request made by stakeholders to address these areas and as well accommodate registrations from foreigners and diplomatic missions, diaspora, and hard-to-reach remote areas. It was also reported that there were presented a total of 59.8 million unique NIN enrolments, with an average of three to four SIMs per NIN in the country, and as of July 24, 2021, there are over 5,500 enrolment systems within and outside Nigeria. According to the statement, the decision also followed a review of the progress of the exercise which has shown significant progress, hence the need to consolidate the gains of the enrolment and NIN-SIM verification process across the country. According to a statement signed by Kayode Adegoke, Head, Corporate Communications, National Identity Management Commission, reads “The administration of His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the extension as part of efforts to make it easier for its citizens within and outside the country, and legal residents to obtain the NIN and it is important to take advantage of the extension. “The NIN-SIM linkage also makes it easier for the security agencies to carry out their statutory duties and the relevant parastatals under the Ministry of Communications and Digital Economy are supporting them as required. https://techglidar.com/2021/07/26/federal-government-of-extends-nin-sim-verification-till-october/ |

Business / CBN To Launch Own Digital Currency October 1 by Smatkomo: 6:34am On Jul 26, 2021 |
The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has announced that it will launch the pilot scheme of its digital currency by October 1, 2021. The CBN announced this during a webinar on Thursday as it presented its digital currency initiative to stakeholders. The information technology director for the bank, Rakiya Mohammed, disclosed that CBN had been researching since 2017 to develop and adopt the digital currency. The project called ‘GIANT’ will run on the hyper-ledger fabric blockchain, an open-source project for developing blockchain-based products, solutions, and applications used by private enterprises. Ms Mohammed said the bank might conduct a proof of concept before the end of this year. During the presentation, the CBN stated that about 80 per cent of central banks worldwide were currently entertaining the possibility of issuing “central bank digital currency” (CBDC), and Nigeria could not be left behind. The financial regulatory institution maintained that the digital currency’s launch would include and allow macro-management and growth and cross-border trade facilitation. In addition, it will also give room for financial inclusion, monetary policy effectiveness, improved payment efficiency, revenue tax collection, remittance improvement, and targeted social intervention. The CBN initiative came as countries across the globe have shown interest in adopting the trade of digital assets. African countries with officially recognised digital assets include South Africa with the digital Rand and Ghana’s e-cedi. https://techglidar.com/2021/07/25/cbn-set-to-launch-digital-currency-before-2022/ |

Investment / FG May Soon Lift Ban On Crypto As SEC And CBN Meet by Smatkomo: 8:46am On Apr 17, 2021 |
Good news for crypto traders as the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) just revealed that it is now working with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to regulate cryptocurrency. This was disclosed at a virtual news conference by the Director-General of SEC, Lamido Yuguda, at the 2021 post-Capital Market Committee (CMC). According to Yuguda, SEC is in discussion with CBN so they could both understand and better regulate the market and that Nigerians will be informed of the outcome of the engagements with the CBN. The DG maintained that SEC that SEC remained supportive of Fintechs and had invested so much in developing a framework to support them. He said in his statement, “Let me say that the SEC remains very supportive of fintechs. We have invested so much in developing a framework for supporting fintechs in the various areas and fintechs are acting in areas of crowdfunding, investment advice and cryptocurrencies and the like.” He however noted that the recent decision by the CBN has disrupted the Fintech market. “In all other areas, nothing has changed, but in the area of crypto assets, you know that with the recent prohibition by the CBN on access to Nigerian bank accounts by crypto exchanges, that market has been disrupted”, Yuguda said. He further said, “the truth of the matter is that while the SEC had issued guidelines in September 2020 aimed at regulating this market, for now for all intents and purposes, because these exchanges do not have access to commercial bank accounts in Nigeria, the market, for now, does not exist.’’ Recall that the CBN had in February 2021, barred deposit money banks and other financial institutions from doing business with cryptos. https://techglidar.com/2021/04/17/fg-may-soon-lift-ban-on-crypto-as-sec-and-cbn-meet/ |
