I have it all - some say I got it all for free Everything I do, turns into a leafy golden tree The waters part for me, even in a turbulent sea I have it all you see, luck just seems to follow me My life is filled with love, yes, true love, I do decree I give myself to love, like an ever present devotee Every hug and kiss I treasure and accept with glee I have it all you see, luck just seems to follow me I don't hobble through life as though I am an amputee No shackles can hold me back, I am not a detainee Obstacle are faced head on, I never run away like an escapee I have it all you see, luck just seems to follow me Life is not a bed of roses, and at times it’s like a judas tree Life is beset by problems, but from them I never flee Every problem is welcomed, as an opportunity I have it all you see, luck just seems to follow me In life nothing is for sure, there is no guarantee My life was spent perfecting what is now a ‘life degree’ I am so blessed that you simply must agree I have it all. You see, luck just seems to follow me |

At a time when it’s becoming harder and harder to recruit and train referees for the “beautiful game” comes the revelation that a referee received death threats upon returning home from the World Cup in Brazil recently. Peter O’Leary from New Zealand became public enemy number one for a split-second decision he took in Rio. The incident in question occurred in a game between Bosnia-Herzegovina and Nigeria in June when he disallowed a goal which cost Bosnia-Hertzegovnia the match. This sparked uproar and 20 000 people signed a petition calling for him to be kicked out of the tournament. There were death threats against him (something about which I am familiar having been the recipient of such threats including having a bullet left in my hotel room). At the time Fifa officials seized his laptop and cell phone to probe for match-fixing. The World governing body paid no heed to the petition and he stayed in Brazil. Peter was conscious that he was thousands of kilometres away from home and was naturally concerned for his wife and family as angry Bosnians made threats against his life and his home. New Zealand police visited the family regularly to make sure that they were safe and to give them protocols should anything happen. “I wanted to make sure that they were safe, that’s the most important thing for me” he said. New Zealand Referee Development Officer Ken Wallace says the vast majority of referees are never targeted by upset fans and counts O’Leary’s experience as “exceptional.” O’Leary admits that it was a mistake, not by him, but by the assistant. However, he admits, “as the referee I’m in charge. I’m responsible and I carry the can.” Mr O’Leary, who is a school teacher, became one of the most hated men in sport at the time. Four months on, he has broken his silence on the game and is preparing to resume his international career. He is not the first and won’t be the last to feel the pressure of being in the middle. Sadly there are referees who have paid the ultimate price. Only last year a referee was kicked to death by three thugs in their teens masquerading as players. We remember Anders Frisk who retired early having been threatened by a certain section of Chelsea fans in London. It’s probably the most unthankful, least rewarding, but most satisfying job in football. It’s poorly paid and only a select few manage to reach the top to receive international appointments. The ultimate “reward” is being selected for major tournaments and especially the World Cup. There’s an old saying in football that you have to be mad to be a goal-keeper. If that’s true, then you have to be a raving lunatic to be a referee and what about dying for this present 'super eagles', you have finally lost it. |

45 feared dead In Fresh Boko Haram Attack in Borno. At least 45 people were killed in a suspected Boko Haram attack in northeast Nigeria, officials and witnhesses said on Thursday, in the latest violence to hit the restive region. The attack happened in the village of Azaya Kura in the Mafa area of Borno state on Wednesday, the caretaker chairman of Mafa local government area, Shettima Lawan said, calling it “wicked and despicable” Village chief Mallam Bulama said: “We counted 45 bodies at the end of the attack.” But other residents said more may have died after they fled into the bush. An unnamed resident said 'it was so horrible. More shocking was one of the attackers screaming continuously, "Aso rock would be next, the the ship must fall and the master cabin won't be spared"' |
