DaddyCoool: A state public college/university or a privately funded Ivy league University? You want to convince yourself that a professor at Havard is a civil servant? Are you a clown or what? You think the school teachers at BIS, Meadow Hall and Greensprings, and that fancy school that just opened in Lagos, do not earn more than your most senior civil servants and public university professors? Why not show us the salary of a public school principal in the US, or a fire Service or Prison/Correctional Service head? How many of the top civil servants in US still earn way less than the US private sector, while mere political appointees in the white house are earning more than these professors of yours? Exactly same scenario on the payslip we are debating. Senior Civil Servants in Nigeria earning N400k to N600k monthly in 2022, while a political appointee at that same 2022 was earning about N1m monthly in a country where some entry level Engineers in the private oil industry were earning N1.5m as at 2010, with some experienced Engineers already earning circa N3m as at 2011? |

They end up getting angry and claim you are boasting. This is why many who earn well are always quiet about their real financial status and blend in with the suffering masses. 1 Like |

cococandy: You know the problem with Nigeria? Everyone thinks the actual pay for political offices that they foolishly term as outrageous, is the reason why the citizenry are suffering. A hypocrite friend of mine who makes close to $10k monthly, is always yapping about the salary of Nigerian politicians. I have asked him if he would quit his job to go take up such a political role for the same pay he is always criticising, without any proceeds from corruption. He is yet to give me a reply, but continue to yap about aimlessly. I repeat again, why will I criticise the political salary that is not even up to entry level pay in some top private corporations that some Nigerians work for in this same national economy? |

tctrills: Who ever declared a professor must earn more than an entry level tech professional or top law firm entry level lawyer, not to talk of an experienced attorney or experienced finance consultant who has been made partner? The scenario above is even in the so called saner climes of USA. |
Politics / Re: This Is The Pay Slip Of A Personal Assistant For May 2022 Salary(photo) by StOla: 2:18pm On Jun 05 |
cococandy: Be careful when you say what Nigerians in Nigeria make in Naira. Stop confusing the obviously suffering civil service to what the private corporations pay. Even in the US, political salary compares more with the private industry pay, and not with American civil service pay, despite that both civil service and private industry derive their pay from the same minimum wage as it is in Nigeria also. Entry level salary at ExxonMobil for Engineers as at 2010, was about N1.5m in this same Nigeria. That was about $10k monthly at the rate then. I was at an NNPC interview in 2011, when a guy from Shell who applied for an experienced hire role, declared his salary as N2.5m There was a time when mid level telecoms personnel were earning between N1.5m to N3m circa 2007. The problem you have with Nigeria political office pay versus civil service pay, also exist in the US. Your true comparison should be if such pay is outrageous for that economy. The answer is hell No! |

DaddyCoool: Daddy Cool down. What you have shown should not be allowed in terms of how the budget of the National Assembly has continued to grow while the minimum wage has stagnated. However, you cannot blame some of us for not seeing anything scandalous about a salary that an OND graduate will earn in Total. Yes, compared to the civil service that salary is way higher, but political service and civil service have never had the same pay structure and will never have. What should not be allowed is having the political class easily adjust their own pay to cater for inflation, while doing nothing significant about minimum wage. |
Politics / Re: This Is The Pay Slip Of A Personal Assistant For May 2022 Salary(photo) by StOla: 1:23pm On Jun 05 |
givedemwotowoto: $175k is average salary in America? Who is deceiving this one. It is not even average salary in ICT not to talk about American civil service. That is a very top executive salary equivalent to working in senior roles with ExxonMobil or Total or NLNG in Nigeria. So if the Trump regime was paying $175k to any political jobber, when a teacher or senior police chief in America is not even seeing $80k in a year, then you have only shown that political roles rake in more money well beyond minimum wage. Only top law firms and technology firms will pay anything close to that for a very top brain. Nothing average salary about that amount. That amount is 3years salary if talking about average pay for those doing well, while it is 2years salary for top earners below management cadre. |

LegendHero: I certainly am aware there are hidden details owing to my parent's payslip. If only I could lay hold of it and show it here after redacting personal details. I am certain the basic salary component was not up to 70% of the over N100k that was the monthly earning then at about grade 13. If anyone is claiming that civil servants earn this or that, just ask them to show you the actual payslip to see the true monthly earning. What was quite alarming for me then was when I realised that even that salary level that took over 20years to attain was below the entry level pay for the Engineers that were being recruited at the telecoms companies, while oil firms like Chevron were already paying entry level staff at over N500k then. 8 Likes 1 Share |

LegendHero: I believe that grade is a political grade different from the regular grade 1 to 17. I have a problem with the table you attached. A grade 1 at N360k annual suggest it is N30k per month. Is that not the current minimum wage of N30k? Is that amount not just the basic salary, without the bonuses and allowances? Can we have the actual data that shows the allowances like housing, vacation, feeding etc. I know these civil servants like hiding these details. A grade 17 step 9, earn more than this annual basic of N6.2m. 7 Likes 1 Share |

hegelian: Stop all these lies. The level 17 has much more earned than the N400k. They also have termination benefits that a short term political appointee does not have. In fact, a mere review of the actual payslip will tell you otherwise that a level 17 earn more than that N400k. Even in the private sector, I have been opportuned to employ short term consultants who were earning more than me on a salary that I determined for them based on what was obtainable in the industry, after careful consideration that they were to cater fully for themselves and families with that singular monthly salary. Even within my team, I know some permanent staff are so wicked and shortsighted that they will never allow such consultants earn more than them. In this same Nigeria that many are lamenting like poverty is the air everyone breathes, there are consultants who earn over $1000 everyday of work for contracts that could run into 3 or 5years. 13 Likes 3 Shares |

hegelian: The problem is poverty has made many hate progress. Exactly like you are now. Imagine the pittance you talking about. Ordinary entry level graduate earn up to that in many high performing industries. Nigerians should stop lying to themselves that everyone is earning a pittance. The only problem with Nigeria is that those who earn well, do so just to pour the money in a foreign economy, either by way of further foreign education for themselves, or foreign education for their children, or family relocation abroad. All with the money made in Nigeria as the lucky ones with a well paying job. And the lucky ones are not few. 15 Likes 1 Share |

If my senior civil servant parent was already earning over N100k during the Obasanjo regime with minimum wage at about N7500, how would the professors not earn so much more with current minimum wage at N30k? 32 Likes 7 Shares |

Is this supposed to be scandalous? A short term employment that we already know is remunerated higher than the regular civil service? I still do not understand why many Nigerians lie to themselves about the actual pay of political persons being high, when many entry level roles in the private corporations in this same country pay up to that and more than that in some instances. I can never quit my private sector job to go earn all this chicken change in the public or political service that many will still hate you because they think it is this small salary that is making them to suffer. Tackle the real financial wastes and there will be more to go round to have a living wage like this one for all government workers. 108 Likes 14 Shares |

Everyone knows the amount demanded is unrealistic, but it is necessary to jolt the government and organized private sector out of their inertia. N120K would be more reasonable. There is no political undertone to ensure that Nigerians earn enough to cater for their needs within the current economy. 3 Likes |

N100k, but if the labour unions can hold out for a N120k agreement, it would be a great accomplishment. Labour must not accept anything less than N100k. A country that can spend N90b on pilgrimage, knowing well that it is broke, should not be pitied in any way. Let the payment make the country so broke that it would get its priorities right. 1 Like |

Validated: We should also identify since when these countries have had such minimum wages. Could it be we have been so bad compared to our African neighbours since the time of President Obasanjo, and we are expecting a sudden upward swing to correct this? As some have also opined, what is the purchasing value of those sums in the respective countries? Also, what is the per capita GDP of those countries with less production than Nigeria, but also extremely less population to cater for? 1 Like |
