Just to clarify folks, the statement was made by Chief Sonny Okogwu (Mariam Babangida's brother) the Ojise of Asaba  and not  Chief Sonny Odogwu, the Ide Ihaba of Asaba.

“If you have knowledge of geography you’ll know that the resource they are talking about is not coming from them{Niger delta}. It is coming from far North of Africa, it’s a flowing liquid.

“If Northern Nigeria decides to be greedy, they can terminate the resource going to them, by way of cutting it and the flow will stop. So, all the resources that will be flowing to the south by way of crude would be diverted in a well in the North and from there it can be tapped and exported.

Career / Should I Take One For The Team After I Resign? by T2(m): 3:07pm On Jun 20, 2006
Ok, so I got this great job with a lot of career growth and nice pay increase. My reason for leaving was hitting a glass ceiling, I couldn't grow much in my position, and yeah, the new job pay was also tempting.

So I told my director the main reason career growth. He tries to counter offer but I shut that door cos I guess once you show your hand you're labeled "disloyal". Now when you quit you get an exit interview with HR, he wants me to say I wasn't happy I didn't get paid overtime (as a senior staff I am exempted from such pay, but did LOTS of overtime), coz he wants to use that to help the rest of the team,

Now even though I didn't get paid, I knew this when I joined, and it wasn't on the top 5 reasons I left, should I lie and take this for the team?

I heard to try and be vague and not hover around money in your exit interview as your reason for leaving so when your file is ever called up in the future (e.g. u need a reference) it makes you look professional if you left for a reason such as career growth.

I think it will sell o, I personally got tired of McDonalds (actually not tired, hate it)after moving from naija, but before b4 I moved, I always used to look forward to a big mac anytime I traveled out.

Once I was in France and dis chap I was with wanted to have an idea how expensive naija was, so he simply asked, "how much is a big mac in nigeria?" Uhmmmmm I went,

Its a global brand, it will help us.

Why will it sell?
1) Its McDonalds
2)we are Nigerians pop. 100m (Lagos pop. 15million)
3)It will be a "status" thing (at least for a while, u have to blindly believe me on this one) "Bros, u don take ya babe go makidonaldi"?
4) You can be creative with your menu, throw in a lil chicken hia n dia (Hey why not KFC as we like fowl for Africa?)

my own yarn

Jobs/Vacancies / Re: Do Certifications Really Improve Your Chances of Getting a Job? by T2(m): 9:25pm On Jun 08, 2006
You need skills, but certification will help, no knowledge is lost. If you are jobless you might as well use your time improving your skills by getting some paper certs.

When your time comes. You will shine.

I'd rather hire someone with a certification and no skills than one with no certs AND no skills!!
Career / Re: Should 2'2s Go To Hell Because They Ain't 1st Class Or 2'1? by T2(m): 7:49pm On Jun 08, 2006
Very interesting topic, was gonna comment earlier, but it was getting a bit passionate specially from davidylan, but as he has cooled down (I hope) cheesy let me comment a bit on the more recent posts,

Yes Departments and maybe universities matters in getting a 1st class, at least from my experience,

Example:
I know a couple of guys that did Physics in Uni, they had some elec/elec electives in engineering, the 1st semester, they all scattered with A's, the physics department then introduced an elective, some elec/elec guys came over and best they could manage was a D, just like the rest of the physics boys.

In that department, only every 4-5 years or so would you get someone with a 1st class, and no they are not all dumb, each time they did electives outside the department or transferred to another department ended the D' story they were used to getting internally.

I know most of these guys in physics prolly didn’t do too well in JAMB and initially wanted to do engineering etc, but same goes to people who are doing zoology, botany and biology (at least in naija uni mentality). Majority also probably wanted to get into medicine, but 1st class wasn’t so scarce in those departments.

And low JAMB score for one uni might be high for another for the same course. My point here is, if you can not get into, for example OAU b'cos of JAMB, you might be able to get into another uni for the same course. Would it be fair to a 1st class student from university xyz to be screened out of a company because he didn’t finish from an "ivy" league university? It happens and it’s also a screening method. Is that fair?

So back to the post, screening only 1st and 2'1 is probably the easiest way for companies to reduce the amount of applicants, is it the best and fair? I don't think so.

Career / Re: Any Hope For lower grades In Nigeria? by T2(m): 5:56pm On Jun 07, 2006
Thats a good point D3n3n, its one thing to get a masters, its another to get a job after the masters.

If you go about chasing education, you come out and you might still not get a job,

I suggest you try and get some good skills, for me it was IT that helped but I did had a passion for this even while in uni,

If you get a job, u can do PGD part time but do concentrate on improving your marketable skills 1st, its not the end of the world, not at ALL!
