Arsenal targets: Four who may replace Giroud 1. Loïc Rémy Rémy has impressed in spells at Queen’s Park Rangers and Newcastle United, showing real pace in behind defences and an eye for goal which would make him different from Arsenal’s current forwards. They could easily trigger his £8.5m release clause, but Arsène Wenger has some reservations about bringing him to the Emirates. 2. Wilfried Bony The Swansea man surprised many with just how quickly he has adjusted to the English game and in terms of profile he would naturally fit into the gap left by Olivier Giroud. Bony is similarly well built and effective with his back to goal, and probably a more natural goal-scorer judging by his 25 strikes last season. 3. Danny Welbeck Wenger is a long-standing admirer of Manchester United’s talented young forward, whose pace, skill and imagination would fit well into Arsenal’s team. Welbeck has not made himself indispensable to United and does not feature highly in Louis van Gaal’s plans, which means Arsenal may be able to convince them to part with him for £16m. 4. Radamel Falcao The best attainable No 9 in European football, Radamel Falcao has been a target for Real Madrid all summer and Arsenal could beat them to the Monaco player’s signature. Although he missed most of the year – and the World Cup finals – with a knee ligament injury, Arsenal could sign the Colombian on loan, though they would not get much change from £20m in that deal. |

Arsenal fear that striker Olivier Giroud will be out with an ankle injury until the new year, leaving manager Arsène Wenger preparing a move for Manchester United’s Danny Welbeck in the final few days of the transfer window. Giroud was last night undergoing tests on a suspected broken ankle sustained in the 2-2 draw at Everton on Saturday, but Arsenal are braced for the worst, which would rule out their main centre-forward for the rest of the year. Wenger was coy at yesterday’s pre-match press conference for the Champions League qualifier at home to Besiktas tonight and said he was waiting for “further investigation” of Giroud’s injury to his tibia, adding that he was “not in the mode to be [talking] about buying or selling”. However, it is now almost inconceivable that Arsenal will not seek reinforcements before the transfer window closes on Monday night. Arsenal have a long-standing interest in Welbeck, whom Louis van Gaal would be willing to part with. Welbeck would be open to joining but United are very reluctant to sell him to a main rival, especially after Arsenal blocked their move for Thomas Vermaelen. They would therefore demand up to £16m for the 23-year-old England international. Arsenal’s current valuation is thought to be closer to £12m. Queen’s Park Rangers striker Loïc Rémy would be far cheaper, as he has an £8.5m release clause in his contract to move to a Champions League club, but Wenger has considered signing the France striker in the past and is thought to have reservations about him. Rémy nearly joined Liverpool last month but the move fell through amid claims he failed a medical, though the 27-year-old has started both of QPR’s Premier League games this season. http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/football/transfers/arsenal-transfer-news-danny-welbeck-in-arsenals-sights-with-olivier-giroud-set-to-be-out-until-2015-9692695.html |

Is the era of 5G connectivity upon us? The government in South Korea says so, and it's sinking $1.5 billion into upgrades it says will make mobile communications there 1,000 times faster than they are today. But not so fast. Literally, not so fast. As was the case when smartphones and other mobile devices first started having 4G slapped on them, the term 5G is as much a marketing slogan as anything else -- at this point, anyway. And if technophiles in the United States are hoping Korea's announcement means warp-speed data connections are coming their way in the near future, they're going to be disappointed. Regardless of the network's capabilities, any wireless carrier wanting to take advantage of them also would need costly upgrades to their systems. Users would have to purchase new devices that could access it. And even then, there's no guarantee that Netflix or similar companies would make their own data available at speeds that live up to the Korean government's tantalizing vision of an entire movie downloading in a single second. A worldwide high of 82.7% of South Koreans use the Internet, and 78.5% of the nation's population is on smartphones. Narrow that down to 18-24 year olds and it's dangerously close to full saturation -- 97.7%. The science ministry's plan is realistically measured. A trial 5G network is due to be rolled out in 2017, with full rollout in 2020. The country's telecom companies, as well as native mobile companies Samsung and LG, are on board and plan to be ready to take advantage of the network, according to the government statement. Eventually, of course, 5G will hit the U.S. and elsewhere. Remember, the difference between 3G and 4G and 5G is somewhat semantic. Significantly upgrade what we have now and you can add a number before the G. But we'll no doubt be behind. Korea's compact geography and existing wireless infrastructure mean that upgrades can happen faster and cheaper, and will reach more of the population than in geographically spread-out countries like the United States. The increasing number of smartphones and tablets used in the United States is already beginning to tax existing communications networks. Add an emerging wearable tech trend and connected appliances like smart thermostats, refrigerators and smoke detectors, and experts expect the U.S. will need a serious upgrade by 2020 as well. And here we are in naija still battling with network chai..... Boko Haram’ll not last forever, he says By Olayinka Latona LAGOS—NATIONAL Vice President of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, South West, Bishop Reuben Oke yesterday in Lagos, said despite the security and other challenges facing the country, the nation remained a unique instrument in the hands of God to influence affairs within Nigeria and beyond. Bishop Oke advised Nigerians to remain steadfast and united in tackling the current challenges confronting the country, saying Boko Haram was an evil wind that blew no good and declared that “the wind will not last as God will soon intervene to end it.” The cleric while speaking on national issues during a four-day conference of The Redeemed Evangelical Mission, TREM, Lagos zone 11 at the zonal headquarters a.k.a Victory & Integrity Center, Victoria Island, said Nigeria was a project in God’s hand. According to him, “I did not know why God allows the issue of Boko Haram to get to this stage but I know that sometimes He allows some situation to get to the peak before He intervenes and we cannot question Him but what I know is that things will change for better for Nigeria. ”Nigeria will not go under, only that God’s intervention might not come the way we are expecting as human. Boko Haram comes and it will go. It will not last forever. “One thing I will love Nigerians to know is that this nation belongs to God and not any particular religion or ethnic group. Nigerians should always remember that there is a God up there who owns our life and that we don’t own anything to ourselves, so they should keep serving God, praying, be their brothers’ keeper and I am sure we will laugh at last in this country. On speculations that the country will break up, he said “I so much believe in the unity of Nigeria, it is a project in God’s hand, and I strongly believe Nigeria has purpose to fulfill in the end time project of God. ”Ordinarily when you look at the challenges it is easy to conclude that it’s better for the country to break and we all go our different ways but how are we sure that such break-up will be the solution to the current challenges confronting us”. Is Goal 50 winner Cristiano Ronaldo the most complete player in history? COMMENT: The Portugal international may not be the greatest of all time, but has there ever been a player with such a perfect blend of technique and physique? Jul 29, 2014 08:31:00 By Mark Doyle While infamously declaring his preference for Lionel Messi over Cristiano Ronaldo last year, Sepp Blatter displayed a surprising level of insight when he mused that the Barcelona No.10 is “a good boy ... and that's what makes him so popular.” The Fifa president unwittingly underlined that while the Portuguese may be an advertisers' dream, he has long since lost the Public Relations battle in the war for the title of the greatest player of the 21st century. In the eyes of his critics, Ronaldo's greatest crime appears to be that he is not Lionel Messi. Even when it comes to comparing their respective capabilities on the field, it is often claimed that the Argentine has the edge because of a mysterious ‘X factor’. Diego Maradona even wrote last month that "Cristiano can do what Lionel Messi does ... well, almost” - without offering any clarification as to what exactly it was that Ronaldo is incapable of doing. The suggestion that the Madeira native is lacking something seems particularly ludicrous after a season in which he scored 51 goals, 11 of which came either via his head or his ‘weaker’ left foot, and ended with him placing a Champions League winners’ medal in his trophy cabinet alongside the Ballon d’Or for 2013. We are talking about a serial winner who also happens to be the perfect footballing specimen; an ideal blend of physique and technique; a player of both style and substance. As Michael Owen says, Ronaldo has it all. "As a complete player, I will say he is probably the best ever,” the former England international told Goal. “He is fast, scores goals, he is both footed, he has skills and can score with his head. He is also strong and plays every game, so he is durable. “There isn’t anything he can't do." Of course, being complete does not necessarily equate to being the greatest of all time. George Best once claimed: “I’m better than Pele. I can kick with both feet.” But, while there are some who would argue that the enigmatic Manchester United winger was more naturally gifted than the Brazil legend, nobody would claim that Best deserves to rank alongside a player who proved himself as strong mentally as he was physically during a far longer and far more illustrious playing career. Ability is not the only factor when it comes to determining true greatness. Physicality, versatility, mentality and footballing intelligence must also be considered. However, Ronaldo undeniably ticks many of the boxes. Physically, he is almost beyond compare. At 1.85 centimetres tall and weighing 80 kilograms, he boasts the optimum fusion of power and speed that comes with the frame of super-middleweight boxer. His upper-body strength is such that he only ever goes down of his own accord, while his sprinter-like thighs not only generate sufficient force to strike the ball just as explosively with either foot, but also provide the springboard for leaps of astounding height and sustained hang time. That he is also one of the most accomplished headers of a ball in world football is testament to another attribute, and this time of the mental variety: his dedication to his profession.
