@pumping

After the scolding by our own easimoni-who incidentally is on a self declared holiday-i have started learning.I have seen the spreadsheet.Do i take an average of the PE's in all the companies sector as the average PE in that sector. The column for trailing PE is blank and u guys talk about it a lot.Is it not that relevant. If its relevant,whats the difference btwn trailing and projected.
Yeah thats pretty much how to calculate sector average pes
Trailing PE is what you get when you use the last year's earnings (or last reported earnings) in calculating eps.
Forward is what you get when you use the expected/projected earnings for the current/next year.
Obviously forward PE is a bit more important because we buy a company because of expected performance.

Roughcut, thks for your answers, but what happens if the old certificates are still not verified before 2008? l have problems verifying mine, because of irregular signature grin, and l might not have chance to go to the registrars myself as requested until next year.

u cn still verify it next year

@ temmie 10,
my guy which stocks are you looking at right now?? im confused and depressed because i don't seem to be able to see anything now that nigerian german has left the station.
hope work is okay sha
the market is like a bloated cow in terms of fundmamentals. those with low PEs are illiquid but might jus be worth it (betaglass).
If the market corrected a bit more, it'll be good.

But i am still looking at insurance, some exposure is healthy, maybe not a huge stake. The fact that the stocks are not nosediving says that interest is being sustained, so the mkt leaders of wapic, unic, law union but havin said that, growth may be limited this year.

Diamond and Access are not expensive but diamond's gdr is around 16.5 so i dun expect any immediate appreciation but its def good in the medium to long run. Access numbers are good which makes me wonder why its not picking yet.
I honestly think the best strategy now is to HOLD and observe interesting movements one can take advantage of. I actually think fcmb at 17.45 is not too bad, its a 20 something naira stock so its really a buy short and long term by me.

if u dun dislike pos, then u are spoilt for choice really, lotsa cheap pos out there (and i dun mean afribank), besides verification has been stopped so u dun hav to wait till jesus comes to get certs

if u have time on your side, u might have to wait on your insurance picks
money has been released and their next results should start showing impact.

@Temmie10 ,

Whats your take on NASCON, do u think it would come of age ? embarassed
i like nascon but at 16 naira or less.
You bought at 22 naira, thats pricey, if u have time on your side and giving that u're still learning, i'll advice you sell the nascon and buy phb po or some good offer that can giv u at least 50%, that helps ease the loss and puts you into the blue (profit)

donilors:

Guys, i need advice

New into this game , and i am learning a lot from this thread. I bought Nacho @ N34 and NASCON @ 22 a while back, i have been holding on to these for a while now, looking to cut my losses and move on to more profitable stocks, but not sure if NASCOn will come to terms with my purchase price, and NAHCO has been inching up, without fundermentals backing it up. Should i cut and run??

Need advice abeg.
IF I were you, i would actually sell my nahco and move on to another stock. if you do 20% with another sound stock, you have made profit that covers the loss on nahco. just my 2 cents.

Having said that though, I tend to lean towards Fatherof2's school of thought. I, like a lot of people are beginners, I need to know how the technicals translate to decisions.
If company X's PE is ~13, what does it mean for me? For people like like Roughcut, pumping, wanaj0,easimoni and the rest of the Gurus when you arrive at this kind of figures for company X it would help a lot of us if u tell us if you are buying or selling.

I do understand that yoy are not obliged to do so, but for brotherly love do it.

At then end of the day whether Jonah swallow fish or fish swallow Jonah, there was a swallow. Whether technicals or hit and run, all we want to do is make money.
PE is price to earnings ratio.
Usually a lower PE is attractive so a company with a PE of 13 would normally be seen to be cheaper than a company with a PE of 25.
So i would consider buying the company with the lower PE. biko?

@fatherof2
i respect ur strategies and enjoy reading your posts

I love a bull market, you get to make lots of money, u also get to hear truly ingenious stock market principles/quotes
Back to the market:
Anybody watching skye bank?, its on a roll, and its got the lowest shares outstanding in the sector, that means the fewest mouths to feed.

@timadel
on phb
i think its a very solid offer with very good pricing, exciting forecasts and a very capable management.
on bagco
its a fundamentally sound business which has been around for a while and has a good brand name and more predictable cash flow than many other businesses, it also provides some diversification and it will sustain investor interest.
the numbers are not the best around but its bound to be a winner too

the rest of the decision making is up to u

i am loving this thread these days,
with attacks and counters
mentors and proteges,
Let all the number crunchers keep crunching, thats their proven method and they deserve the repect.
Also let all the prophets prophesy, they deserve their fair share of respect,
In many ways it helps to have all these differing views about the market, thats why there is a market after all,
anytime u sell, someone is buying, anytime u buy, someone is selling,
If we all thought a stock was good, no one would be selling and the stock would never be available to buy.
Keep the views coming, i have always said that in this market, the only way a man finds out if he is right or wrong is when he puts his money on the line.
so all the fundamentalists, technicalists, traders, prophets, gurus, agents, apprentices, fathers, i salute. grin

That business with CSL just put me off right awaythe MD's papa owns CSL so no surprises there and i think te projection for '08 PAT is too optimistic the half-year PAT for '08 is N5.34B so where are they going to get the N5B to make up the N15B projected for full-year? The fact of the matter is that FCMB is still a ~ N10B PAT bank so like the Dragons in Dragons Denanybody watching Dragons' Den? would say I'M OUT!

please could you tell me if Fidelitybank will do well because i bought it with your revealed strategy, while it was on ts, and when will they lift their ts because they came into the market before fcmb, please i,m expecting your reply soon, there seem to be inflation at the moment, it,s probably why most of these stocks are going upward anyway i seem not enjoying it as most of the coys i bought from are on ts like sterling bank, wema, fidelity bank. etc.

I suspect i am one of those that sold the fidelity to you grin grin grin
NO fear sha, i bought much earlier this year and have made a lot on it, thats why i sold.
sterling depends on the merger details.
u shouldnt fear on wema too, i only see it inching upwards.

3 marginal banks?

my guess
first inland had problems with their 25 billion reserves after the massive write off of the last result, anyone remember?
Spring bank for sure after all the lying by the banks involved in the merger, little wonder some wonder if the bank is still alive,

your reservations are founded and there are extreme views abt Access in the market. Some think its the next best thing, others say only do short term with Access.
Fundamentally, based on earnings and most ratios, i recommend Access as a buy and in a bull market will be one of the biggest winners.
However i dun own a single unit jus cos i think that for me, there are better alternatives.

This current gtb result is not fantastic at all.
They have to imrove performance drastically in the final 6 months just to sustain the price at which they are currently trading.
wat's 25k interim dividend for gtb? are we talkin insurance company here or penny stock?
