Politics / How We Can Deal With Corruption In Nigeria Read More At Http://www.herald.ng/can by TheHerald: 8:44pm On May 15, 2017
The Speaker of the house of representatives, Yakubu Dogara has revealed how corruption n Nigeria can be tackled.

According to him, endemic plaguing the country can only be dealt with by attacking its roots.

Speaking on Monday at the book launch ‘Antidote for Corruption: The Nigerian Story’, a book authored by Dino Melaye, senator representing Kogi west, Dogara said those celebrating high-profile prosecution and detention have missed the point because “that is dealing with the symptoms of corruption”.

He said fighting corruption was not enough, but replacing the old order in which made it thrive.

He also said for the war against corruption to succeed, there must be institutional reforms that would make it near impossible for people to engage in corrupt acts.

“As a country, we ran into a situation where corruption was becoming the norm, there was this moral cult that we had created that celebrated corruption,” he said.

“The motivation was always there for corruption, but now what is important is not just fighting the old corrupt system. Really, if we must make progress, our focus should be to replace the old order that was corrupt with a new order that makes corruption near impossible to take place.

“So, when those who celebrate the successes of the fight against corruption in terms of the high-profile investigation, high-profile prosecution and even detention, they are missing the point because that is dealing with the symptoms of corruption. That is punishing corruption. But how are we developing remedies that we can apply to ensure that the tree dies?

“Recently, in the labour community, we went for May Day and some of us were nearly held hostage. You can’t blame the workers. While they were agitating for their rights, agitating for minimum wage, some of us are talking about living wage. You see, the workers control, perhaps, about 96 percent of the budget. In the national assembly, we have about 92 percent, judiciary and the rest.

“So, if you don’t make the environment conducive for those who administer this money not to want to be corrupt, you will end up jailing people.”

He further described Melaye as “highly opinionated” and “often pugnacious.”

Nairaland / General / Barbaric! ISIS Executes 145 Civilians, Hangs Bodies On Electric Poles by TheHerald: 7:03pm On May 15, 2017
The Islamic State has executed more than 145 civilians for trying to flee the western part of the Iraqi city of Mosul in Syria according to an official.

The official said on Saturday that the civilians from the al-Zanjili neighbourhood in western Mosul were executed after they were caught attempting to escape.

He pointed out that ISIS extremists hanged the bodies of the victims from electricity poles after declaring them apostates for trying to leave “the land of the caliphate”.

Al-Bayati added that the civilians had also been accused of providing information to Iraqi security forces.

Iraqi government forces are now struggling to expel IS militants from the western part of Mosul, where some neighbourhoods are still controlled by the extremists.

The IS seized large swaths of northern Iraq in the summer of 2014 and proclaimed a caliphate in the territory under its control in that Arab country and neighbouring Syria. It made the city of Mosul its main stronghold.

US-backed Iraqi forces have pushed deeper into the last pocket of Mosul controlled by Islamic State (IS) as the battle for the city approaches an end after seven months of grueling urban combat.

Senior Iraqi generals say IS is confined to a small area and is “drawing its last breath”

The number of people fleeing Mosul doubled to 10,000 a day since Friday. Iraqi commanders plan to splinter IS and tackle the remaining militants on many fronts

The militants have now been dislodged from all but a handful of districts in the western half of Mosul including the Old City, where Islamic State is expected to make its last stand, taking advantage of narrow streets and its dense population.

Brigadier General Yahya Rasoul said the area controlled by Islamic State was no more than 9 per cent of west Mosul, which is bisected by the River Tigris.

“It’s a very small area … God willing, this is the final phase,” General Rasoul said.

The elite Counter Terrorism Service (CTS) stormed the Ureibi and Rifaie districts at dawn on Sunday, according to a statement from the Joint Operations Command.

At the same time, the army’s ninth division and the Interior Ministry’s elite Emergency Response Division attacked the IS bastion of 17 Tammuz.

“Daesh [Islamic State] is drawing its last dying breath,” the commander of the ninth division, Lieutenant General Qasim Nazzal, told state television on Sunday.

Nairaland / General / Nigerians Top Foreign Criminal List In India by TheHerald: 3:58pm On May 14, 2017
Nigerian nationals top the list of foreigners arrested for drug smuggling in Navi, Mumbai over the past half decade.

Deputy Commissioner of Police of Special Branch, Tushar Dorshy told Hindustan Times that a total of 66 narcotic related cases were registered between 2012 and April 2017 from the anti-narcotic cell of Navi Mumbai police in the city and Nigerian nationals were involved in 14 of these cases.

He also disclosed that since 2012, the police have taken into custody 14 foreign nationals for smuggling drugs to the city and 13 of them were from Nigeria, while one was from Ghana, Daily Post Nigeria reports.

Just a week ago, the police arrested one Nigerian at Kopar Khairane who had come to sell mephedrone rock and powder. Around 25 grammes of the drug in powder form and 85 grammes in rock form collectively worth Rs 3.30 lakh was seized from his possession.

Around 25 grammes of the drug in powder form and 85 grammes in rock form collectively worth Rs 3.30 lakh was seized from his possession.

According to the police, as far as foreign nationals are concerned, several Bangladeshis were also arrested in the city for different crimes. But they were mainly into fake currency notes scam, cheating, theft and robbery.

None of them was arrested for trading drugs.

According to Dorshy, “When it comes to drug smuggling by foreign nationals, by and large, all the criminals are from Africa in general and from Nigeria in particular.

“The number of foreign nationals including those from Africa has also increased in the city over the past two years.”

The police said that these Nigerians work in networks which also operate in other cities such as Delhi, Mumbai and Pune.

Apart from their countrymen, several Indians are also working in those networks.

Another Police Inspector from the anti-narcotic cell, Maya More, said, “These criminals collect their drugs from people in their networks and then smuggle those to different cities.

“The biggest problem faced while trying to get details about their business is the language issue. We cannot interrogate them properly after their arrests, as many of them cannot speak proper English or any Indian language.”

Officials from the city special branch told the newspaper that presently around 950 foreign nationals from nearly 70 counties are staying in Navi Mumbai and around 50 of them are Africans.

Police sub-inspector from the anti-narcotic cell, Amit Shellar also added, “Most of the Nigerians arrested for drug smuggling, had come to India on a business visa. Initially, they would export garments from Mumbai to their country. However, when their business would fail, they would trade drugs for easy money.”

Also, the crime branch official said that such networks are operating in the city through word-of-mouth publicity.

An officer said, “They initially target students from the affluent families and help in forming a habit of taking the drug. Once they create a good number of customers, they keep selling it to them.”

Health / 5 Danger Signs To Show You Are Seriously Dehydrated by TheHerald: 3:32pm On May 14, 2017
Water is a transparent and nearly colorless chemical substance that is the main constituent of Earth’s streams, lakes, and oceans, and the fluids of most living organisms.

Most people do not drink enough water and this leads to a continuous damage on their body.

If you experience any of the following, you can improve your situation by starting with a glass of water.

1. Your Mouth is Dry
It is necessary to drink water because it lubricates the mucus membranes in your mouth and throat. This continues to keep the mouth moist with saliva long after the first sip.

Whenever you feel sticky and nasty in your mouth, you would be reaching out to take liquid. Most times, people take some sugary drinks to quench their thirst but it’s only a temporary solution to a larger problem.

2. Your Skin is Dry
When the body lacks water, it also lacks sweat and this can lead to the body’s inability to wash away excess dirt and oil which has been accumulated in the body.

Your skin is your body’s largest organ, so of course it needs to stay hydrated. In fact, dry skin is one of the earliest signs of full-on dehydration, which can lead to much larger problems.

3. You’re Overly Thirsty

When one is thirsty, it seems like the body can’t get enough water. You tend to drink a lot of water until the fluid level gets back to baseline.

Alcohol also dehydrates the entire body, and most times people tend to urinate alot while drinking. At the end, their thirst increases and there is a need to get hydrated.

4. Your Eyes Are Dry
By now it should be clear that drinking water affects more than just your mouth and throat. A lack of water intake leads to dry, bloodshot eyes. Without water in the body, your tear ducts dry up.

5. You Experience Joint Pains

Our cartilage and spinal discs are made up of about 80% water. This is an absolute necessity to keep our bones from grinding against each other with every step we take. By keeping your body hydrated, you ensure that your joints can absorb the shock of sudden movements, such as running, jumping, or falling

Health / Top Five Dangerous Foods That Affects The Liver by TheHerald: 3:07pm On May 14, 2017
The liver is a vital organ of vertebrates and some other animals. In humans, it is located in the upper right quadrant of the abdomen, below the diaphragm.

The liver has a wide range of functions, including detoxification of various metabolites, protein synthesis, and the production of biochemicals necessary for digestion.

It also plays a role in metabolism, regulation of glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells and hormone production.

Fatty Foods
French fries and burgers are a poor choice to keep your liver healthy. Eat too many foods that are high in saturated fat and it can make it harder for your liver to do its job. Over time it may lead to inflammation, which in turn could cause scarring of the liver that’s known as cirrhosis.

Sugar Intake
Too much of the sweet stuff can take a toll on your liver. That’s because part of its job is to convert sugar into fat. If you overdo it, your liver makes too much fat, which ends up hanging around where it doesn’t belong. In the long run, you could get a condition like fatty liver disease.

Reduce Alcohol Intake
Drinking too much can wreak havoc on your liver. Over time it can lead to cirrhosis. Even occasional binge drinking — four drinks in one sitting for women and five for men — can be harmful, too. Try to limit yourself to one drink a day if you’re a woman or two a day if you’re a man.

Limit Package Snack Food
The problem with chips and baked goods is that they’re usually loaded with sugar, salt, and fat. Cutting back is a relatively easy diet tweak with a little planning. One good strategy: Bring a stash of healthy snacks with you to work. Try an apple with a single-serve packet of nut butter, or sugar snap peas with a mini-cup of hummus.

Nairaland / General / Your Blood Type May Increase Your Risk Of Heart Disease Read More At Http://www. by TheHerald: 1:41am On May 07, 2017
Recently, a study presented at the congress of the Heart Failure Association suggests that non-carriers of O blood group have a slightly higher risk of heart failure.

The research was based on a review of 11 studies into blood groups and heart disease. Over 1.3 million people were involved in the studies.

Based on the analysis of fatal coronary events, the researchers found a slight difference between people with O and non-O blood groups, The Cable Nigeria reports.

15 in 1000 people with a non-O blood group experienced a heart attack, compared to 14 in 1000 people with blood group O.

The researchers said while more study is needed to gain a further understanding of the differences in risk, a possible explanation is that non-O group carriers have more of a blood clotting agent that is associated with extra cardiovascular risk.

Mike Knapton, associate medical director at the British Heart Foundation, told WebMD that the findings will not have a “large impact on the current guidelines used to assess someone’s risk of a heart attack”.

“These estimations are calculated based on commonly used and widely accepted heart disease risk factors.

“Most of a person’s risk estimation is determined by age, genetics (family history and ethnicity) and other modifiable risk factors including diet, weight, the level of physical activity, smoking, blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.

“People with a non-O blood group type – AO, BO and AB – need to take the same steps as anyone wanting to reduce their CVD risk.

“That includes taking sensible steps to improve their diet, weight, level of physical activity and not smoking, and where needed, manage blood pressure, cholesterol and diabetes.”

The findings have yet to be presented in a peer-reviewed journal.

Nairaland / General / Where I Get My Power From – Prophet T.B. Joshua by TheHerald: 10:02pm On May 06, 2017
The spiritual leader of the Synagogue Church of all Nations, SCOAN, T.B Joshua has revealed the source of his powers as he prepares to relocate his church from Nigeria to Israel.

The Spiritual leader of the Ministry, while revealing the mystery behind his powers to cast out demons and deliver his congregation spoke during a documentary airing on national Israeli television, Reshet TV.

In the 11-minute long documentary which detailed the visit of the cleric to the Holy land, Reshet TV declared regarding the cleric, “the man responsible for 60% of the tourism in Nigeria announced that he is moving to Israel.”

Recall that Prophet T.B. Joshua had announced that his move to relocate his church to Israel is connected with the place being the birthplace of Jesus Christ.

The cleric further revealed that he made a recent trip to Israel where he met with three prominent Israeli mayors of Jerusalem, Tiberias and the Jordan Valley as part of his relocation plans.

Reshet TV in its broadcast which was aired in Hebrews said: “He is often seen in the company of Rabbi Yehuda Meshi-Zahav, the Founder of Israel’s award-winning rescue agency, ZAKA, who recently presented Joshua with an award in honour of his extensive humanitarian efforts.

An Israeli journalist however questioned the cleric asking, “How did you get your power,” during the interview to which the cleric responded “From my Father, Jesus, who was born in this land. I am an inheritance of His grace.”

Politics / How Goodluck Jonathan Duped Nigerians Of N34billion – Amaechi by TheHerald: 2:32pm On May 06, 2017
The Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi has accused the past president of the country, Goodluck Jonathan of attempting to dupe the country after paying the sum of N34 billion for the dredging of the River Niger, a project which the incumbent president paid N100 million for.

The transportation minister while speaking in Lagos at the opening of a conference on Fast-tracking Port Reforms hosted by The Nation in conjunction with the Federal Ministry of Transportation and Epsilon Limited said: “When the River Niger was first approved for dredging by the previous administration, it was approved for N47billion and N34billion was paid to the contractor. Dancers were called in and there was a party.

“We are not dredging the River Niger with billions of naira; we are dredging the River Niger with just N100m. When we flagged it off recently, did you see us dancing? Was there a party? I just went to see the governor and told him that the project will start today and will be finished in one month.”

Amaechi continued: “The governor said he will accompany me, and I said ‘ok’. So, I asked the governor to flag it off since it’s located in his state.”

He added: “People are wondering how on earth we are going to dredge the River Niger for N100m when the previous government awarded same contract for N47billion? But we are going to dredge the River Niger, using dredgers owned by the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA).

“NIWA has dredgers, but the previous government preferred to give contractors money to dredge the river with private dredgers while NIWA’s dredgers were lying idle somewhere in Port Harcourt.

“The NIWA MD told me the agency has dredgers, but it’s been hired out to somebody in Port Harcourt. So, we had dredgers, but the previous administration hired them out to some persons in Port Harcourt while paying a contractor billions of naira to use privately owned dredgers at a very high cost.

“I told the NIWA MD that I will look for money to fuel their dredgers, and work has started. That is why we are dredging the River Niger with just N100m.”

Nairaland / General / Puma Sues Forever 21 Over Knock Off Rihanna Sneaks Read More At Http://www.heral by TheHerald: 6:07pm On May 04, 2017
Puma are suing chain store Forever 21 accusing the company of copying a number of the Fenty X Rihanna designs created by Rihanna.

The shoe wear giant is demanding the retailer not only stop selling the alleged rip-offs but hand over all profits it has made from them, TMZ reports.

The suit comes as Puma also took action against Topshop in a German court, getting an injunction to stop the store selling slides Puma said were direct copies.

The songstress has served as the creative director for the Fenty X Puma range for over two years and her products often sell out.

According to TMZ, Puma filed the suit in Federal court claiming Forever 21 had blatantly ripped off at least three of the pop star’s designers.

Rihanna and fashion fans have long commented on the internet about the similarities between the Fenty X Puma shoes and those sold at Forever 21.

In the suit, according to TMZ, Puma singles out three designs which it claims have been copied by the chain store.

Puma holds patents and copyrights on the shoes’ designs, which include the sold out Leadcat Fenty Fur Slide which did retail at $80, the Bow Slide which costs $90 and her suede Creepers, which costs $99.

Forever 21 sells bow slides for $24.90, its furry slides cost just $18 and its creepers are $25.

In the lawsuit, obtained by TMZ, Puma argues by Forever 21 selling ‘copies’ it lessens the demand and stops the shoes being seen as a luxury item.

The shoe giant admits that it keeps stock levels low on purpose to ensure this.

According to the suit: ‘Forever 21’s business model is based on trading off of the established goodwill of reputable, name-brand companies, such as Puma.’

‘We will continue to take action to enforce our global intellectual property rights both against other brands who seek to trade off our designs and reputation and those who trade in counterfeit products.’

Forever 21 have been sued by brands including Adidas and Diane von Furstenberg that claimed their designs were copied.

But Forever 21 has also sued other retailers over copyright claims also.

Nairaland / General / He Is An Impostor- Chris Okotie Attacks TB Joshua Over Israel Relocation by TheHerald: 4:05pm On May 04, 2017
Flamboyant Nigerian Pastor Chris Okotie is the latest prominent voice to wade into the controversy over Prophet T.B. Joshua’s proposed relocation to Israel.

Speaking on Facebook, Okotie, who has long been an outspoken critic of Joshua, described the cleric as an attention-seeking “impostor”.

“He is controlled by a malevolent misanthropic spirit,” the pastor of Household of God International Ministries wrote on his official Facebook Profile under a news article he reposted detailing Joshua’s alleged relocation.

“His hypocritical jeremiad should be ignored. He is just another frustrated shaman seeking public sympathy,” Okotie wordily concluded.

However, followers of Okotie were surprisingly quick to rise to Joshua’s defence, commenting that the cleric had not been positioned to judge on such matters.

“Honestly, I do not think a brilliant man like Chris Okotie will castigate another who propagates God’s throne,” queried Tamaraudoubra Sultan Zimughan.

“On whose mandate is Okotie labelling T.B. Joshua a shaman? Go to both Churches and see whose is more of God? Look at T.B. Joshua’s life and that of Chris Okotie and see who is more fruitful”.

APC chieftain Timi Frank and PDP stalwart Femi Fani Kayode are among those who have joined the growing call for Joshua to remain in Nigeria, citing the spiritual, economic and social impact of his church.

Meanwhile, in a post on Joshua’s official Facebook page, the controversial cleric revealed the secret behind his ‘money’. According to him, the reward accrued from ministry cannot be quantified in material terms.

Speaking specifically about his foreign crusades, Joshua disclosed that he pays for the large majority of arrangements and does not touch the offerings collected during such events.

“My joy is to see people healed, delivered and blessed. That is my money. Each person that is delivered is more than $20,000 to me! That is the money God gives me – the joy to sleep in peace,” Joshua stated.

“You need to know what it means if God uses you to heal and deliver people,” the cleric continued. “If you know what it means – the joy in God using you to deliver people – you will never ask the people you deliver to bring money… If God uses you to remove the pain of one, you are more than a millionaire.”

According to the prophet cum philanthropist, “If money is your gain, you are robbing yourself. That money is insufficient – it cannot give you peace

“They are doing the harmonisation, data cleaning, just trying to do due diligence to make sure everything is fully in place.“That’s the most critical stage because it is a thorough, painstaking job. If you notice today, you didn’t see the chairman appropriation in the chamber and they are working very hard on it.

“I cannot confirm when it will be laid. All I know is that they are working very hard to make sure everything is put in place. It is something that if we make one mistake, it’s a whole document and it’s a bulky document with thousands of pages,” he said.

When Senator Abdullahi was asked that the extension of the 2016 budget to May 5, 2017, will expire this week, he replied: “If you check, it’s May 5 and we are going to catch up and there’s no problem. We are very much aware of all these things, that’s why you saw us coming so that the right thing will be done to get things working.

“There’s no politician who will not want to make progress because we are the one at the receiving end. We are more than worried and we really want everything to happen well.”

Health / ‘I Drink A Cold Beer A Day At 4pm’ – 102-year-old Woman Credits Beer For by TheHerald: 10:26pm On May 03, 2017
While the search for longevity and immortality continues, everyone gives their two cents on what they perceive to be their secrets to leaving long lives.

Interestingly enough, a centenarian from South Carolina indicated that her personal secret for long life lay in a tall pint of cold beer, every single day.

Mildred “Millie” Bowers, who will be 103 years on the 31st of August is one of nine girls in her family.

A survivor of the Great Depression and having outlived two husbands, she credits beer as one of the secrets to her longevity.

“It’s all in the genes,” Ms Bowers said. “I feel OK because I’m in good health.”

She added: “Have a beer, doctor’s orders.”

Ms Bowers got the go-ahead from her doctor to drink beer on a regular basis after sharing her love for the drink with nurses at her assisted living facility. She said the doctor immediately approved – and now she has her pint every day at 4 pm.

Whether or not other seniors should adopt the practice of having a daily beer, she said: “Yes, if they like it.”

“Look, there are people who don’t like coffee and people who don’t like tea,” Ms Bowers added, “but I want everyone to drink what they like.”

Family / State Minister Gives 700 Brides Wooden Bats To Keep Abusive Husbands In Check by TheHerald: 9:55pm On May 02, 2017
An Indian state minister has given hundreds of wooden bats to newly-wed brides, urging them to use the paddle as a weapon if their husbands turn alcoholic or abusive.

Gopal Bhargava gave the bats which are used to get some dirt out of clothes in traditional laundries to nearly 700 brides at a mass wedding organised by the government of central Madhya Pradesh state on Saturday.

The nearly foot-long paddles are emblazoned with messages that read: “For beating drunkards” and “Police won’t intervene”. Bhargava told the brides to reason with their husbands first, adding that they should “let the wooden paddles do the talking” if their spouses refuse to listen.

Bhargava said he wanted to draw attention to the plight of rural women who face domestic abuse from their alcoholic husbands. “Women say whenever their husbands get drunk they become violent.
.
Their savings are taken away and splurged on liquor,” he said. “There is no intent to provoke women or instigate them to violence but the bat is to prevent violence.” The minister has ordered nearly 10,000 bats for distribution to newly-wed women.

Religion / I Am Leaving Nigeria- TB Joshua by TheHerald: 5:52pm On May 02, 2017
In a bombshell announcement that shocked congregants and viewers of Emmanuel TV alike, Nigerian Prophet T.B. Joshua declared his intentions to leave Nigeria and relocate his ministry to the nation of Israel.

Speaking to a rapt multi-national audience at his church service on Sunday 30th April 2017, Joshua disclosed that he had just returned from the ‘Holy Land’ after holding meetings with three prominent Israeli mayors of Jerusalem, Tiberias and the Jordan Valley.

According to the cleric, they offered both land and facilities in an area around the biblical site of the Sea of Galilee for the Nigerian Pastor to organise meetings for international pilgrims.

“This is where my Father in Heaven came from – it’s non-negotiable,” Joshua explained, adding it was not a decision he undertook lightly.

“It’s the best place for you to meet Prophet T.B. Joshua. After your healing, blessing and deliverance, you can move around all the spiritual monuments which will establish your faith,” he further clarified.

Joshua said his decision to leave was not connected to the “persecution” he endured during his ministry.

However, he hoped the move would help people to “appreciate” what his ministry had been contributing to both the local economy and Nigeria’s international image.

“This is the most persecuted ministry in the world. Who are the people persecuting the ministry? My people, Africa,” Joshua bluntly stated, adding that this ‘treatment’ had led him into a life of virtual isolation.

“That is why I choose to live a lonely life. If you want to see me, come to this church. I don’t go out. It has not been easy – because I don’t know who is a friend or who is an enemy. If you learn T.B. Joshua is not around, I am in a revival. I live in the church here. I don’t have a house outside.”

“Anytime you pray, remember Africa in prayer,” the cleric solemnly continued to an audience which included over 3,000 foreign nationals who flew into Nigeria to attend the church service.

“Many heroes and great people have been chased out of Africa. There are many geniuses in the Western world who are originally from Africa.”

The cleric pointed to the example of heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua who was allegedly turned down by Nigerian sporting authorities when he wanted to represent the country.

“What happened to me from the beginning of my ministry is enough to chase me out of this country – but I am still in your midst. Upon the persecution and hatred – I decided to follow the path of love. You show hatred; I show love. When I go for a revival, you will see the stadium full but I am not carried away by that. I leave where I’m celebrated to live where I’m persecuted.”

The cleric then advised congregants: “Where you are not celebrated is the best place to stay, to get strength. When you are in the midst of a battle, you are building yourself. That is why I decided to stay where I am not celebrated here in Nigeria. When the grace of God is amid challenges, it gets stronger.”

According to the cleric, the invitation to Israel came due to the growing popularity of Joshua’s television channel Emmanuel TV, which is especially known on YouTube.

“Your life can preach a better sermon than your mouth,” he exhorted the congregation, stating that the Israeli officials had observed his ministry from afar before inviting him.

No timeframe for the move was specified in the service and it was not clear whether activities in The SCOAN’s Ikotun-Egbe base would cease entirely.

Joshua concluded by counselling people: “Don’t destroy your relationships beyond repair because the person who fights you today can be your saviour tomorrow.”

The shock announcement will come as a blow to Nigeria’s religious tourism industry.

Statistics from the Nigerian Immigration Services revealed that six out of every ten travelers to Nigeria go to The SCOAN, with countless local businesses and hotels in the area relying on the church activities for their sustenance.

Nairaland / General / Confusion As Baby Mama Surfaces At MOCPED Provost, Professor Akeusola’s 8th Fida by TheHerald: 4:48pm On May 02, 2017
There was confusion at the 8th day fidau prayer of late Professor Olurotimi Sikiru Akeusola, the Provost Micheal Otedola College of Primary Education, MOCPED, after a woman claiming to be his baby mama surfaced at the 55-year-old academic’s prayer service.

According to reports, the late academic died last week after a brief illness and while the crowd gathered at his home for the fidau prayer, a woman was reported to hve emerged from the crowd to inform the Muslim clerics present that she bore the academic a child, one which she was holding.

The woman was reported to have journeyed from the United States of America to attend her baby, Abass’ father’s fidau prayer.

The woman further claimed that the deceased named the child himself when he was born which led the Muslim clerics into praying for her and the baby.

The discovery however hit the late man’s wives hard as family sources who spoke to Encomium.ng reported that clerics announced that another woman who also had a baby for the academic could not make the prayer as she was also based in the United states.

The fidau prayer which held at No. 9, Akogun Olu Akeusola Drive, T-Junction Epe, Lagos, on Saturday, April 29, 2017 had three official wives of the late academic present.

The family source further added that the last wife of the deceased has been distraught by the news of other women bearing her late husband children as she had no issue for him in their five years together before his passing away.

Politics / Buhari And The Enemy Within by TheHerald: 9:22pm On Apr 30, 2017
President Muhammadu Buhari’s government is seriously challenged. That is the truth and nothing but the truth. We can choose to play the Ostrich and sink our heads deep in the sand but then our unclothedness is obvious from the back. The impression I am getting is that the factionalization, or is it the fractionalization, of Aso Rock has become so deep that except something drastic is done now, the damage may last even beyond the life of this administration. In my young life, I have never seen a Nigerian government so openly divided against itself as this one. This is ironic because Buhari is assumed to be a strong leader, at least as a man with a military background.

I will ignore the miscommunication that often comes out of the mouths of the various government spokespersons because, even though it is dangerous, I am able to admit that these things happen in life. The mismanagement of information on the health of the president is so chaotic I would be tempted to classify it as a national security threat but I will still resist any such temptation for now. We have been through this before, specifically in 2009 when President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua fell terminally ill and the nation went into a meltdown before common sense prevailed. The president’s illness has been better managed this time around, but it still leaves much to be desired.

My prayer for Buhari is that God will quicken his recovery so that he can be back on his feet again. But even before he fell ill, his government was already in disarray before his very eyes. My focus today will be on his security team. It is an open secret that his men are fighting each other and trying to outdo each other, but the most shocking thing, I would say, is that Buhari has not called them to order. Calling them to order is not just about telling them off at a meeting — it could mean sending some of his appointees packing. We are talking about state security here, not personal security or even State House security.

We were recently treated to the spectacle of the Department of State Services (DSS) opposing the nomination of Magu as the EFCC chairman. Magu was nominated by the president. The DSS, which reports to the president, wrote to the National Assembly asking that Magu should not be confirmed because of integrity issues. I could not imagine President Goodluck Jonathan nominating Mallam Ibrahim Lamorde as EFCC chairman and Mr. Ita Ekpeyong, his DSS DG, asking the senate not to confirm him. Or President Olusegun Obasanjo’s nomination of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu being opposed by Col. Kayode Are, his DSS DG. Something has fallen apart in this government.

If anyone is still in doubt that Buhari’s government is internally challenged, the recent raid on a “safe house” of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA) by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) should provide the biggest evidence so far. From what we have heard so far, the NIA director-general, Ambassador Ayo Oke, rushed to the office of the EFCC chairman, Mr. Ibrahim Magu, asking him to abort the operation on the Ikoyi apartment. He was said to have told Magu the circumstances surrounding the “safe house” but his entreaties failed. We are still waiting to be told how much Buhari knew about the warehoused funds and the “clandestine” projects.

It is no secret in government circles that Mr. Lawan Daura, the DSS DG, and Maj. Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd), the national security adviser, barely see eye-to-eye. There are essentially two factions, and those who don’t belong to either camp are often caught in the crossfire. Monguno and Magu are aligned. It is understood that it was Monguno that recommended Magu to be EFCC chairman. The second divide is of Lawan and the army chief, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai. In the Lawan corner, it is believed that all negative media reports about the chief of staff, Mallam Abba Kyari, Buratai, and Lawan himself are orchestrated from the Monguno-Magu axis.

The irony of ironies, though, is that Monguno, Magu, Kyari and Buratai are all from Borno state. Can you believe it? They are all Muslims. They also speak Hausa as lingua franca. Going by the way we normally analyse issues of ethnicity and religion in Nigeria, these men should ordinarily be the tightest of friends and colleagues. They should naturally have a sense of unity. When they are in the same room, they should be able to talk some sense to each other. Buhari, who is half Fulani and half Kanuri and would be considered their kith and kin, should also be able to get these grown men to bury their egos and work together. Yet this sore has been festering for so long.

The ordinary Nigerian may not know the implications of this in-fighting. How can the heads of security agencies not be on speaking terms? Someone said there is also rivalry between CIA and FBI in America, and there is nothing strange about what is happening in Nigeria. This is a mistake. The CIA/FBI case is an institutional rivalry, often over areas of jurisdiction. What we are witnessing in Nigeria is a clash of egos. It has nothing to do with jurisdiction or national security. We just have top officials in Buhari’s team who despise each other so much they cannot bring themselves to be under the same roof. And the tragedy is that all this is happening with Buhari doing nothing.

The NIA issue perfectly illustrates the consequences of this discord in Buhari’s security team. Monguno, as national security adviser, is the chief co-ordinator of all security agencies. Security reports should go through him to the president. In truth, that is not the situation on ground. Also, before any major raid or search is conducted by a security agency, the NSA should be in the know. From what we were told, Oke briefed Monguno (in writing) on the “clandestine” projects NIA is undertaking in various parts of the country. Oke also reportedly briefed Monguno on the amount of cash in its possession for the completion of these projects.

If the information is accurate, did the EFCC conduct a raid on NIA’s property without pre-informing the NSA? If Magu indeed pre-informed Monguno, did he still give Magu the go-ahead to raid the “safe house” despite being aware that it is NIA’s? Would he do that? On the other hand, could it be that there is suspicion that the NIA funds, which were released by former President Goodluck Jonathan in 2015, were really meant for the elections and the Ikoyi recoveries were the leftovers? There is a precedent after all — didn’t some of the funds meant for Boko Haram operations end up in the PDP presidential campaign? Is that why the apartment was raided? Questions gallore!

The Osinbajo panel must tell Nigerians the truth and the whole truth about the Ikoyi affair. There are too many questions and insinuations that cannot be swept under the carpet. I understand that the sensitive nature of intelligence operations may make things a bit difficult for us. There are several details that cannot be made public in order not to compromise what is supposed to be a covert operation. However, we deserve to know the non-sensitive bits. I am particularly interested in how much of this fiasco was caused by the in-fighting in Buhari’s security department. This may be doing a grievous damage to Nigeria’s security architecture.

Again, I pray for Buhari’s speedy recovery. But shaking up his security team — and even his cabinet — should be his priority when he resumes work. Nigeria is a country of 180 million people and he cannot allow our security and welfare to be toyed with because some big egos are clashing. This has gone on for too long. It is either Buhari calls them to order by reading them the Riot Act or he overhauls his team in favour of those who are ready to put the lives of Nigerians above every other consideration. As for the Ikoyi billions, I eagerly await how the government will come out of this self-inflicted embarrassment. Dicey.

Health / Garri And 4 Other Daily Foods That Could Kill You by TheHerald: 8:41pm On Apr 30, 2017
Food is good for the body, providing the much-needed nourishment for energy production, repair of tissue as well providing the necessary chemical substances that will help the body fight diseases.

However, care needs to be taken irrespective of how we prepare and consume food materials as some poor cooked or raw materials could be extremely detrimental to our health and wellbeing.

below are 5 of the everyday consumable foods that can endanger your life if not properly prepared or handled with care.

1. Grated Cassava flakes/Garri

Garri is a staple food that all Nigerians can not do without. It plays an important role in our daily lives….so much so that hardly a day goes by without the consumption of this staple or its derivatives. Unfortunately, Garri is one of the most problematic staples as the raw materials used in its production; Cassava has sap that is rich in cyanides and aflatoxins.

Cyanides are very dangerous chemicals that are capable of killing humans by interfering with the red blood cell’s oxygen uptake and may result in respiratory failure in severe cases. Even worse is that no amount of processing entirely gets rid of all the cyanide in the garri, but the good news is that it can be reduced to consumable levels.

Proper processing should ensure that you don’t get killed by the staple you love but moderate consumption is still advised.

2. Bread

Agege Bread is produced in many Bread Bakeries across Lagos State. Most of these bakeries are unregistered and/or unsupervised by health monitoring agencies in the State or Local governments.
Agege bread comes in various sizes and is usually produced in 2 shifts, night and day. Thus the bread is available hot (warm) and oven fresh in the morning and evening. The loaves of bread are appropriately priced to suit every pocket.
There are however a few health challenges resulting from the massive consumption of Agege Bread by Lagos residents. The hygiene of the product right from the bakery to its selling point cannot be guaranteed. Although the bread loaves are brought out from the ovens hot, they are usually taken away for sale naked. Many of the bread sellers will be noticed to be wrapping up the bread inside transparent nylon bags by the roadside where they are being sold to the public. Occasionally, some of the dirty loaves are cleaned with dirty rags by the roadside. It is therefore, obvious that not many of the bread loaves are hygienic for human consumption.
Concerning the actual contents of the bread, some health problems can also arise. The basic flour used is from white wheat flour. It is a sure cause of high blood sugar unlike if whole grain wheat has been used. Thus diabetics and those likely to develop diabetes are warned to stay off this kind of product.

Furthermore, Agege bread is high in table salt and refined sugar. High intake of table salt predisposes to development of high blood pressure while high intake of refined sugar is a well-known cause of Diabetes. Thus wise adults should be wary of excessive consumption of Agege bread or else they are beautiful candidates of these silent killers ravaging our present day society.

3. Akara

Akara also known as bean cakes is a morsel filled with joy for many, especially when taken hot with pap, custard or bread. However, there are growing health concerns as regards the oil content of the delicacy as stated by Dooney’s kitchen.

In the process of its frying, each morsel absorbs loads of groundnut oil; which has a potential to be high in cholesterol and bad for the heart.

4. Groundnuts

Groundnuts are the love of our lives….oh we love it! Especially if we have to take it Ijebu garri on the rocks. However, just like the oil derivative, one has to be careful of the consumption rate. This because poor storage of the nuts can expose them to fungal attacks which in turns increases the concentration of aflatoxin in them (yeah, aflatoxins are by-products of fungal metabolism). High concentrations of this chemicals can affect the liver in the long run. Hence, the careful consumption.

Note that if you eat groundnuts and probably tastes funny it most likely may be infected by fungal and hence loaded with aflatoxins.

5. Beans

There is a general consensus in the health community is that beans are, in general, a “health” food and that when combined with rice, form a perfect protein for vegetarians.

Beans contain a lot of soluble fiber, protein, carbohydrates, folate and iron. They also contain Lectins, which are also present in high amounts in grains. Because of their protein content, beans (legumes) often get a primary role in the diet of vegetarians, though not without cost.

According to the site wellnessmama.com, lectins in legumes are an important protective measure for the bean plant, and a potentially harmful one for humans.

Obviously, some lectins have more toxic effects than others, as evidenced by the example above, but all lectins have some effect on the body. This is the reason that grains, beans, and other lectin containing foods cannot be eaten raw.

Lectins are capable of harming the lining of the intestines, especially the microvilli. This happens when the lectins bind to the protein receptors in the intestinal lining, causing damage.

When the intestines are damaged, lectins and the foods that they bind to can pass through the intestinal wall and into the bloodstream. These sticky molecules can then wreak havoc in the bloodstream, causing diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Technically, this write-up isn’t saying you should stop eating these foods, but that you should make sure these foods are properly prepared, so you do not end up in the hospital.

Travel / Nigerians Can Now Get Their Visa In One Day – UK Embassy Read More At Http://www by TheHerald: 2:09pm On Apr 25, 2017
The British government through its High Commissioner in Nigeria, Mr. Paul Arkwright has announced a special service for Nigerians which will allow them get their UK visa on the same day of application.

The British Embassy through Mr. Paul Arkwright made the disclosure on Monday at the 40th anniversary of the Nigerian British Chamber of Commerce, NBCC, which held in Lagos.

Mr Arkwright while speaking at the event said that the British embassy has made provision for visa applicants in Nigeria to get their visa on the same day or within five days of application.

He noted that the embassy as part of its special services has reduced the maximum turnaround time for all classes of visa application to 15 days.

“We have introduced a same day visa service – at a cost – for visas in Nigeria. We have also introduced a service that means you get a visa within five days, at a lower cost than the same day process.

“Our turnaround time for all other visas is 15 days. The key thing, however, is that all visitors to the UK, whether they are from Nigeria or anywhere else, must respect the law and the length of time their visa says they can stay in the UK.

“In 2016, around 140,000 Nigerians applied for visas to the UK. Of those that applied for student visas, 90 percent were successful.

“For those that applied for other visas, around 70 percent were successful. There are as many as 250,000 Nigerian nationals or dual Nigerian-British nationals living in the UK at the moment.

“Some claim the total Nigerian diaspora in the UK is well over a million. We want Nigerians to come to the UK. They come to do business, to study, to see family and to invest in our economy.”

Politics / Ikoyi Apartment: NIA Boss, Oke ‘implicates’ Buhari’s National Security Adviser R by TheHerald: 11:42am On Apr 25, 2017
The suspended Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency (NIA), Amb. Ayo Oke has revealed to the Presidential Investigative Committee probing the recovery of $43.4million at Osborne Towers in Ikoyi, Lagos that he wrote a memo to the National Security Adviser (NSA) on the custody of the money for covert operations.

The panel which sat for more than 11 hours on Monday examined documents and interrogated some officials at the marathon session.

Reports from the sitting say the DG maintained his stand that he informed the NSA, Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno, who is a member of the committee, about the money.

Oke was said to have told the committee about the covert operations and projects executed by the agency.

Responding to a question, the source, who pleaded not to be named, added: “Oke gave a spirited defence of his career and said there was no ill motive behind the cash.”

“At the end of it all, Oke was heard saying ‘I did my best before the committee. I have left the rest to God.”

But there were indications that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may have deferred further action on the interrogation of some suspects for the Osinbajo Committee to conclude its assignment.

The committee, which began sitting at about 10 am, had not called it a day as at 9.37pm.
A source, who spoke in confidence, said: “What the committee did was to sieve through heaps of documents submitted by the EFCC and the NIA on the $43.4million.

“Some of the documents include findings at the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) on some companies engaged by the intelligence agency.
“After analyzing these documents, the committee started interacting with some top officials of NIA. Thereafter at about 5.40pm, the interaction with Oke then started.

“Oke took longer time because he brought the list of projects being executed, the designs, contract papers and mode of payment.”
A multinational company is said to be handling most NIA projects.

The committee decided to work round the clock to meet its two weeks deadline, the source said, adding: “The members actually started sitting at about 10 am and the only time they had respite was each time the National Security Adviser, Gen. Babagana Monguno and the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, went to observe Islamic prayers.

On why the EFCC has deferred the interrogation of some suspects, the source said: “Since a panel is in place, the EFCC has stayed action on the invitation of some suspects to avoid duplication of efforts.

“The recommendation of the panel will determine the next step by the anti-graft commission.”

Here are three simple ways to keep your mind sharp and active:

EAT WELL, SLEEP WELL AND EXERCISE OFTEN

The mind needs proper rest and energy in order to get the best performance out of it. A troubled mind cannot function optimally.
It is important to feed well, observe good sleep and engage in exercise so as to improve mental well-being.

CONTINUE READING, ABSORBING, AND EXPERIENCING CULTURE

TO IMPROVE MEMORY, DON’T WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN
If you can, try this for a week: write down everything you need to do at the beginning of the week, as you normally would, but take your list and put it out of sight.

Instead of keeping that list visible at your desk, internalize your projects and simply remember and know what needs to be done, prioritize it in your mind, and do it. Your brain is extremely powerful and you’ll find that, in time, you may not have to write anything down to remember everything.

Politics / How Yoruba Leaders Killed And Shared My Father’s ‘meat’ – MKO Abiola’s Son by TheHerald: 5:34pm On Apr 24, 2017
One of the sons of the acclaimed winner of the 1993 presidential election, Chief MKO Abiola, Abdulmumuni Abiola has said his kinsmen betrayed his father by literally killing and sharing his meat.

Speaking with journalists, Abdulmumuni said the family was not interested in the clamour in some quarters that the late business mogul should be posthumously conferred with the title of the former president.

He said the title was of no use to the family and would not in any way bring back the late politician.

Abdulmumuni said, “Can you imagine? My father died in 1998 and we’re still discussing his death as if he died recently.

“I feel there was something my father was trying to do and the powers that be then didn’t want him to do that. What could that possibly be? What did MKO do to deserve that death? We want to know.”

He wondered why some people decided to kill his father who was only trying to make the country better.

“These were people from his own ethnic group; they cut him (Abiola) into pieces and shared his ‘meat’.

“The decision (to kill him) that they made back then, are they enjoying it now? We can’t go back in time but going into the future we can avoid making the same old mistake, which is the most important thing”, he said.

Asked if he was in support of the call that the late Abiola should be conferred with the title of the Ex-President in his grave, the son said the country had other better things to attend to than giving the title to a man who was no longer alive.

His words, “That might just be a symbolic measure actually; my father has been long dead. What’s the point of giving him back his mandate when he’s no longer alive to accept it? They should keep the mandate.

“The country has more pressing issues to deal with. The country will be a better place if our leaders can apply their heads as well as hearts to lifting the majority of the people out of poverty, injustice, hopelessness, insecurity and corruption. There is so much rot in the country.”

Nairaland / General / Popular Nigerian American Model Catfished By Lagos 419’ers Read More At Http://w by TheHerald: 4:42pm On Apr 24, 2017
The social media space has become a home to different people with different agenda, some godly others purely ungodly. The piranhas of the social media world however have a whole new idea in mind and to unsuspecting persons, they may be the perfect person you’ve ever met.

The social media world however coined a name for these set of people who live under different identities to defraud other people, not necessarily for the cash, sometimes, emotional fraud is involved, they are called the ‘Catfishes’.

The Catfishes of the social media world are those persons who feel less comfortable with their appearance -whatever the reason may be – and thus steal an identity, male or female, most often, the beautiful and handsome ones.

The photos however make way for them in achieving whatever goals it is they are after and should you be beautiful or handsome and love to flaunt it, there’s most likely a clone of you somewhere on social media enjoying the ‘catfish’ experience.

Uche Mbang, a Nigerian model based in America is a victim of such identity theft as the user took to her social media page to issue a disclaimer which reads: “I DO NOT have a Facebook account. And I live in America not Nigeria,” after some Lagos based fraudsters created a Facebook account with her photo and a re-christened personality ‘Jennifer Smith’.

To unsuspecting men and women (such as those below in photos), Jennifer Smith will be the woman of their fantasy, gaining trust through a web of lies aimed at a central goal of defrauding the unsuspecting victims, usually when the issue of meeting up arises.

Identity thieves under the name ‘Catfishes’ have become one of the most rampant criminals on the social media scene and have through their actions brought untold hardship on the original owners of media contents posted online.
