Sports / Nike's New Olympic Sunglasses Is 480,000 Naira by TheNGmag(m): 7:57pm On Aug 05, 2016
This special pair of sunglasses designed for Rio athletes goes for $1,200 on the Nike store and although it was designed for athletes, you can get yourself one too. It is called the Nike wing and it is designed to wrap your face right around your temples to thrash the tingly feeling you get at the tip of your ears.

The product which is designed in partnership with German optical manufacturer Zeiss features a ventilated silicone brow-bar to prevent fogging. The Nike Wing also weighs four ounces less than your average pair of sunglasses which could come in handy when you’re trying to win the same race Mr.Bolt’s a part of.

Education / Five Things To Know When Applying To Study Abroad by TheNGmag(m): 10:27pm On Aug 03, 2016
As a student who studies abroad, I must acknowledge that applying to college abroad is a big adventure that tests one’s persistence and character in general. When applying to schools about two years ago, I almost gave up so many times because of the many processes and requirements needed to ensure proper processing of my application information. Having scaled through this phase of life, I believe it will be great to drop some hints on how to begin your application to schools abroad. The thought of studying abroad could be exciting and could lead to wishful thinking but it requires hard work. So, first things first if you are not hard working you may like to reconsider your desire of studying abroad or you could put on your armor of hard work. There are a lot of things to know about application processes of school but here are five important things I believe anyone who intends to apply to a college abroad should know.

1. Begin Your Application Process Early.

Many people will testify that the application process is a process that needs to be carried out with care and not in a rush. It may feel like you have many months before the application deadline but trust me the days will run by quickly before your very eyes and you’ll be in a state of rush. So like I said before begin early.

2. Have a List of Potential Schools.
There is nothing like having a specific view of where you intend to study. It takes a great time to get a comprehensive list of schools that may be the right schools for you and this is why step one should be applied. When you begin early, it gives you the opportunity to select your schools rather than just applying to random schools abroad.

3. Have a Checklist of all Your Requirements.
Each school has its unique requirement and if applying to different schools you will want to have a detailed checklist which will enable you to keep track of your progress.

4. Know Your Deadlines.
This sounds like information that should always be remembered but I have heard of high-flying students who missed their opportunity to apply to a school just because they missed the deadline. Have these dates on your calendar and try to submit at least two days before the deadline. It is better to be safe than sorry and you will not want to miss a deadline after so much hard work too.

5. Your Essays Represent You.
I understand not everyone loves to write a lot especially when there are a lot of questions to be answered. Personally, I struggled with my essays and had a very challenging time getting my essays to be on point. Despite the struggles I encountered with writing my essays, I learned that essays serve as a connection between the admission council and the applicant. This means even if you are a high-flyer academically, your inability to package yourself through your essays will most likely hinder you from being accepted to your dream school. Seeing that this is a major aspect of your application, you really want to begin early and work on those application essays not only by yourself but also with people who can help criticize the essays.
These tips are only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to applying to schools. If you can get these five things right, then your journey in the application process will be made easy. Although it may seem easy, remember it takes hard work first before ease comes in. I wish you the best as you begin your study abroad application process.

Politics / Governor Of Oyo State's God Daughter Or Concubine? Who Knows? by TheNGmag(m): 6:55pm On Jul 15, 2016
This isn’t Satire, no; this is live from Instagram, Malika Haqq American star from E!’s Keeping up with the Kardashians posted a photo of her and her supposed God Father who is none other than the governor of Oyo state; senator Abiola Ajimobi.
Malika who is also known for her role as Penny in the 2005 film sky high co-starring her twin Khadijah posted this selfie with senator Ajimobi who isn’t fondly talked about anymore in his state. Senator Ajimobi has not paid the civil servants in his state since the beginning of the year and just weeks after the unpaid workers began a state wide strike, rumour has it that he replied saying “If you don’t have money, how have you been getting to work for the past 6 months” now i’m not here to validate that but really though, is that really his God daughter?

Travel / 5 Amazing Vacation Hotspots With Tour Guides Inclusive by TheNGmag(m): 10:25am On Jul 13, 2016
This is an excerpt from our December 2015 Editorial.
As a full blooded Lagosian, I know that no year is complete without a vacation to ease of the stress that is a part of all of our daily routines and completely unwind from the road rage (Lagos traffic can drive you mad sometimes). We plan our leave days so perfectly so we spend maximum time with our families and are free of the buzzing phones and endless emails. Sometimes, we may even have the luxury of taking a travel vacation outside of the country in order to soak in new sights and sounds. Unfortunately, choosing a vacation location can cause a headache with so many cities to choose from, travel options to consider, accommodation and cost of travel and vacation expenses.
So here’s my vacation wish list. Five cities I’d love to spend my vacation in, given the opportunity and maybe a bonus or two. If you can afford to, make sure to see all five cities. If you can’t, wait until you can and make sure to see all five cities (yeah, they’re definitely worth it).

Dubai, UAE
Dubai is one the fastest emerging cities in the world and a popular tourist destination within the middle-east. A city characterized by immense luxury and incredible architecture, it provides a rich middle-eastern experience without losing any of the comforts of today’s modern cities. Tradition blends with innovative technology to create a wonderful tourist experience you will not soon forget.
Where to Stay: Home to the world’s first seven star hotel, Dubai is teeming with luxury accommodation that caters to your every comfort. Even if you can’t afford to stay at the Burj al Arab, you can always book a room at any of the Hilton hotels all around Dubai known for their great locations and excellent staff. There are also a couple of Sheraton Hotels including the Four Points that provide a memorable experience. The excellent locations of luxury hotels all over the city coupled with top-notch architecture ensure you have wonderful accommodation anywhere with great views of the city.

Tour Guide: Begin with the dashingly new metro, going everywhere in the city, and then head for the traditional souks and magnificent malls, the lofty creek and the stupendous towers, and the breath-taking fountains show. Conversely, start at the Burj Khalifa which has one of most interesting architecture in the planet. The tallest building in world with more than 150 floors is an excellent symbol of engineering and lots of visitors come consistently to take a perspective of this incredible building design. Proceed to the Dubai Museum with its architecture and uniqueness that shows the culture of the city. Here you can explore the interesting history of the nation, and light effect give a mesmerizing view over there at night. A tour of Dubai of course wouldn’t be complete without visiting the Burj Al Arab and except you’re lodged there, this marvel of engineering is wonderful place to visit.
The Palm Island in Jumeriah is also another amazing feat of engineering in a city that is constantly pushing the boundaries and is an artificial island shaped like a palm frond. You have just got to see it from an aerial view; majestic. Then, there’s the Dubai aquarium complete with a diving experience, the Jumeriah mosque, the Al Badia Green hill, the Dubai creeks and the Wild Wadi Water Park which can provide fun for the kids; all a part of the excellent Dubai experience.

Dublin, Ireland
If you wanna visit a metropolis much similar to London without all the crowds or the extra cost, then Dublin is the place to be. With its small city feel and Irish charm, the city is as easy to drink in as a smooth pint of Guinness and although the Irish capital has undergone a number of changes over the years, it has managed to retain its history despite that. With its down-to-earth, friendly atmosphere and welcoming, open-hearted people; it is no wonder this vibrant city is one of Europe's top tourist destinations.
Where to Stay: There’s the hip new Dean Hotel located downtown, capped by a beautiful rooftop restaurant. If you don’t mind a 20-minute walk to the city centre, opt for a private room at the Generato Dublin, a design-forward hostel housed a former Irish folk-dancing hall. The Dylan, Shelbourne and Clarence hotels, all from the 19th century are also very wonderful accommodation steeped in the history of the city.
Tour Guide: Dublin has a myriad of visitor attractions to suit all interests so that you enjoy maximum fun during your stay in the city. Top on the list of attractions to visit during your time in Ireland has to be the Guinness Storehouse located in the heart of the St. James Gate Brewery. Whether or not you’re a fan of the black stuff, this is a must-see. This seven-storey building has been remodelled into the shape of a giant pint of Guinness and its tour comes with a complimentary stout at the Gravity Bar. The St. Patrick Cathedral and the Book of Kells are a pointer to the city’s rich religious history and a time when it wasn’t so metropolitan and will make for a divine tourist experience. The Book of Kells was written around the year 800 AD and is one of the most beautifully illuminated manuscripts in the world. It contains the Latin texts of the Four Gospels and it was deposited for safe keeping in Trinity College Dublin in 1653. The Botanical Gardens and Dublin zoo are also wonderful for nature lovers. Art enthusiasts are welcome to indulge at the National Gallery or the National Museum of Archaeology as a part of a wonderful Irish experience. Finally, there may not be leprechauns in Dublin but there is a world’s first; The Science Gallery at Trinity. It’s a masterpiece that is now being cloned all over the world. Their collection is always changing and there’s always something new to see. Make sure to visit different pubs, art galleries and shops and get the feel of the city through the eyes of locals.

New Orleans, U.S.A.
Home of jazz music and known as the Crescent City for the curving shape of the Mississippi as it snakes through town, New Orleans is truly cosmopolitan. It is also one of America’s most astonishing cultural melting pots. The French left their language, and the Spanish their flamboyant architecture. Africa donated the rhythms that morphed into jazz and the blues. The Caribbean left a love of celebration and a touch of voodoo magic, while Cajun Americans pulled all these influences together to create one of America’s most eclectic cuisines. Whether you come for Mardi Gras or the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival or any other reason, a visit to this unique destination is never the same trip twice. Now getting over the disaster caused by Hurricane Katrina, the city seems to be on the rise again.
Where to Stay: The French Quarter is the ideal neighbourhood for anyone coming to New Orleans. It’s historic, festive, artsy and at the centre of everything although it’s usually in high demand and kinda expensive. I would recommend other places but the French Quarter is just too awesome. So find a way to get yourself accommodation in the Hotel Mazarin or the Hampton Inn (or even any Bed and Breakfast) cause staying anywhere else isn’t even half as amazing.

Tour Guide: The attractions of New Orleans are the same as they have always been – riding rattling streetcars and the Algiers ferry, snapping your fingers to hot jazz in colonial cafes, seeking out occult relics in ancient cemeteries, or just admiring the stately architecture in the French Quarter, Bywater, Faubourg Marigny and Tremé. Then of course there’s the greatest-show-on-earth that is Mardi gras, held in late February or early March. If you miss it, don’t panic; there are few weeks in the year when there isn’t some festival or other filling the streets with crowds and music. As the locals say: “Laissez les bons temps rouler!” (“Let the good times roll!”). There’s just so much to do that you’re never at any moment, bored. Immerse yourself in the city’s rich cultural history and incredible body of art. Make sure to visit the National WWII Museum and enjoy incredible music on Frenchmen street or Jackson Square.

Sports / Messi Is Going To Jail, Along With His Father...happy Happy Ronaldo. by TheNGmag(m): 11:38am On Jul 10, 2016
Everyone who has been alive for at least 10 years has surely heard the name Lionel Messi. He usually makes the news for doing something no other player has done but these days, although he still does that, it’s not been for the greater good. Lionel Andrés Messi just recently lost yet another national final after losing to Chile on penalty shootouts, having lost three international finals in three years, Messi decided to hang his boots and call it a day, at least for international football.
Just 4 days ago, the 29 year old footballer was dealt another major blow; he has been sentenced to 21 months in jail for tax fraud. The Spanish court came to this decision after months of investigation which led to Messi and his father, Jorge earning a fine of (£1.7m; $2.2m) and €1.5m respectively for defrauding Spain of €4.1m in 2007-09.
The pair also face millions of euros in fines for using tax havens in Belize and Uruguay to conceal earnings from image rights gotten from deals with Pepsi -Cola, Procter & Gamble, and Adidas which date as far back as 2005.
Although neither of them is expected to serve jail time because under the Spanish legal system, prison terms less than 2 years can be served under probation, Messi’s lawyer says his client and his father will in fact be appealing the court’s decision in an attempt to clear the air.
"The sentence is not correct and we are confident the appeal will show the defence was right," Messi's lawyers said in a statement after his client was found guilty.

Fc Barcelona’s Position
Barcelona believe for some reason that their talisman is innocent and have devised an elaborate scheme to get people to show unwarranted sympathy to their star player.
All we know for now is that this plan requires people take photos of themselves in Barcelona prints and tag #WeAreAllLeoMessi

Crime / Is Gtbank Stealing All Our Money? by TheNGmag(m): 4:38pm On Jul 08, 2016
GTbank launched a quick and easy way for customers to top up airtime, send funds from their bank account to any person’s without a token and we all loved the idea.

At least until last week, GTbank customers who use this feature started noticing some fraudulent transactions been made with their account in guise of Airtime purchase. Tolu who doesn’t use this feature decided to see what would happen if he did. I sent a couple of people money and bought airtime with this platform and lo and behold, at work today I got an alert saying I bought airtime and my account was debited.

Pretty intense stuff, they fell for my bait.

Then i headed to twitter only to see a sea of complaints from people, in fairness to the bank, they are aware of this and are trying to rectify the situation.

Car Talk / The Most Ridiculous Car In The World by TheNGmag(m): 3:01pm On Jul 08, 2016
The British company is calling it the “Rolls-Royce VISION NEXT 100” and people are struggling with the right adjectives to describe it. This particular self driving car meets the demands of every gratuitous millionaire who is looking for ways to burn money... but it’s zero emission so that’s really okay.

Politics / What Ambode Doesn't Know About Street Hawking by TheNGmag(m): 2:52pm On Jul 08, 2016
Ambode is chasing hawkers away from the street and into the waiting arms of social vices.

Lagos feels different these days; new laws are put in place every now and then but the latest addition to this collection isn’t looking as good as the governor intended. A ban has been placed on street hawking with the consequences being a fine of 90,000 or 9 months in prison for both buyer and seller.

People are already having their say because not only is buying items on the road a fundamental part of being a Nigerian, it is a source of income for those who still look for honourable ways to make money, and serves as one of the backbones of music distribution in Nigeria. For the love of God, there would have been no Olajumoke the bread seller without street hawking - Which makes me ask, HOW ARE WE TO GET BREAD??

Why Do People Hawk?

The sad reality is that for most street hawkers, they hawk not because they want but because they have to. It doesn’t take much to become a petty thief in this economy but some will still take their chances making a profit of 500 Naira per day hawking fruits or gala in traffic. Stores are expensive to rent and even more expensive to maintain. An example of a failed project to curtail street hawking is the new Tejuosho ultra-mordern market at Yaba which as we speak has 95% of its store spaces still intact because of the cost implication on sellers.

What Are People Saying?

Everyone has what he believes and I think for the most part we all correct in our own sense.

There is the issue of the young sellers being prone to certain things like rape for the young females, young girls who hawk goods end up almost too often been raped. This is not a good thing and it makes it a risky business for most girls pushed into the business by their caretaker but what happens when they quit this job because of the new law? Having no other way to earn a living, some if not most would gladly exchange sex for money... but you can say at least now it’s their choice.
There is the issue of highway robbery. Have you ever been robbed on the highway? Personally, no, but I do know a handful of victims. You cannot punish every street hawker for the actions of a few pretend street hawkers and the ineptness of the law enforcement agencies. If anything has to be done about this, it should be strengthening the police and highway patrol, not taking away a job that gives more than it takes.
There is the issue of it being illegal in the first place and should not even exist.
There is the issue of the street hawkers constituting a nuisance on the road causing congestions almost on every road but really though? You cannot blame traffic congestion on a little human traffic.

Here are my two cents on the issue; this is an attempt in futility much like the past administration’s attempt to get motorcycle riders in helmets. Street hawking may or may not have such negative effect in the society but if this is to end like this, a countermeasure should be put in place so the people who benefitted from hawking don’t resort to worse things to make money.

Health / This NGO Is Determined To Battle Mental Awareness In Nigeria by TheNGmag(m): 2:44pm On Jul 08, 2016
It always starts with not knowing, doesn’t it? Especially when excuses become likely but as we’ve all come to accept, ignorance isn’t an excuse anymore.
Let’s task our minds a bit.
Imagine waking up to find that by no fault of yours, you can no longer smile; you feel unnecessary guilt; don’t feel like doing anything at all; and you are getting irritated far too easier than normal. You don’t have a fever; you are not coughing, but somehow food no longer appeals to you.
Imagine having to feel that way for a week, then a month, then some more.
Imagine not knowing why exactly you feel that way or have anyone to talk to about your issues.
Imagine finding out that you are indeed, sick, and still not be able to tell someone about it.
Then the voices in your head start to have a voice. They torment you with persecutory thought insertions. Insomnia follows; no interest in anything pleasurable.
Imagine finding out about a terminal illness, but not having someone to take care of you because of societal stereotypes.
That’s just a glimpse into what people suffering from mental illnesses have to deal with and more so, in this part of the world.
Contrary to popular opinion, mental illness isn’t madness. Yes, shocking. What’s actually shocking is that there are more mentally ill people at home than on the streets and in the markets. It’s clear that people need to start taking their mental health serious.
Mental illness is likened to the cancer of the mind; one that has been cruelly and unfairly neglected in our society even with the advent of civilization and education. We need to do more. We need to understand that with the way the world is set up right now, it’s important to be in optimal health; physically, and mentally. There’s the need for everyone to agree that health isn’t complete if we can’t maintain healthy minds.
In making conscious efforts to create awareness and take a stand to end stigma, a few of us decided to institute a platform to reach out as advocates for mental health. We formed a non-governmental organization whose primary goal is to take advantage of the reach that social media offers to enlighten people about the importance of maintaining optimal mental health.
Using campaigns that run every other month and sometimes throughout the year, we will look to engage with people, using both online and offline events.
We hope to impact people’s line of thoughts positively even as we advocate for greater focus on our mental health by the government.
To become a part of this great and long overdue cause, do visit:
www.mentallyaware.org to volunteer and get involved with our campaigns.
Also, follow our social media accounts:
