The VO is not convinced that your "sponsor" will sponsor you. The funds in the accounts are more than enough. You need to remove ALL ambiguity about the sponsorship. @TheBae also provided you some valuable advice. olaniyisal: |

I have written over 700 posts answering so many possible questions about getting a TRV, yet people still mention me to answer the same questions I have repeatedly answered. Smh. Please before you mention me to answer your question(s), read my previous posts. So many others like @tnuola @Team12 @mevisbleek @Onyeoma3 @TheBae @hayqinsbFX @ayooluwatoni @berexio1 @Amefrica and many more people have answered an innumerable number of questions several times over. Read their posts. Or just read all of Part 6 and/or Part 7 and/or 8. 7 Likes |

The probability that you will get a TRV with such a course is near zero. I don't mean to discourage you, but you should know that the VO (visa officer) will find it unjustifiable that you want to go study French Language and Culture in Canada when you could have studied such in Benin Republic or Cameroon (or any other nearby Francophone West African country). If you apply with this course, it is almost guaranteed that you will get a "Purpose of Visit" denial. Your application would appear as a mere ploy to abscond from Nigeria. But hey, if you feel you have a strong and compelling justification for why you would rather study that course in Canada, then I can't discourage you. Best of luck. **Your probability of getting the TRV (with such a course) goes up if your passport has several EU/US visas and trips to other OECD countries and if you have lots of very strong ties to Nigeria (e.g. you own a highly profitable company), and you have a wife & kids. But even in this case, you would still need to have compelling reasons why you intend to do this in Canada and not Benin Republic or Cote D'Ivoire or Cameroon or Togo. jredlom: 1 Like |

Ranking matters a lot, I agree. But only to an extent. If you are looking to do a research-based degree, then ranking is very important. Ranking may still not tell you about the strength of an institution in your specific area of research though. For example, a school ranked #50 globally may be better at electrical engineering than another school ranked #15 globally. If you are not into doing research, then global ranking is not as relevant. These rankings are almost exclusively based on research and academic publications NOT teaching quality. Ranking does matter if you do care about school name recognition though; name recognition can help when you are looking for a job especially if your job search is not limited to the city where your school is located. But in some cases, a lower ranked school may have much a more practical education and a lot more connections with industry, thus potentially making it easier to get a job. Ranking is not the be-all end-all. A school where you are most likely to succeed is almost always the best option. Also keep in mind that ranking won't necessarily tell you about what academic resources would be available at the school. Many average ranked schools have a whole lot of resources and more than comfortable facilities; these schools have brilliant professors and students too. **I schooled in a globally unranked university and thereafter at a top-30 globally ranked university (both in the US). There is no silver bullet answer to your question. You need to think and answer this question for yourself. Some applicants in parts 7/8 of this thread got TRVs for a second undergraduate degree. It is up to you to be able to justify it to the VO through an extremely well written SOP, and more. If you have convincing reasons, then you should be able to convince the VO. VOs are not robots that just deny/approve your app based on one-size-fits-all rules, they are humans who do read and judge each application individually. You should read the whole of Part 7 or part 8 to learn how to better package your app. Also, I don't recommend omitting your BSc in your next app. Marcus01: 1 Like |

Actually there are a couple of people on this forum who have gotten TRVs for a second Bachelor's degree. You will just need to compellingly explain to the VO, otherwise it would be a red flag. Marcus01: 1 Like |

"does not appear consistent" is used on a lot of GCMS notes to describe "purpose of visit" problems. I have seen it on at least eight GCMS notes. The fact that you have a BSc and MSc in different courses is not a big deal -- Canada doesn't require every applicant to be a straightjacket, just be able to justify your trajectory. The glaring issue with your app is you claim to be going for a PGC in the exact same course for which you already have an MSc; this means that your claim to be a student is not credible. The VO is likely to believe that your primary intent is immigration for permanent residency. SegunWamiri: 2 Likes |

I agree with your advice. But there's nothing wrong with the fact that his first degree is unrelated with his second degree bro. His main issue is going for a PGD after an MSc. hayqinsbFX: |

SegunWamiri:Sorry to hear about your denial. Well, because you already have an MSc in Management, it is a massive red flag that you going for a PGC (a lower certificate) in the exact same course. Applying for a PGC/PGD in the same course you had an MSc in is a recipe for getting a "purpose of visit" delay 99.9% of the time. This has been discussed a lot on this forum. Only you know why you want to get a PGC after having an MSc in the same course; explain this to the VO. But to be honest with you, there is an extremely low chance that any explanation would suffice. I could be wrong tho, since you are a better advocate for yourself than any third party. Unfortunately, I can't give you advice on how to "frame it". You need to come up with credible reasons for why you want to go study whatever in Canada, even with an MSc in Management already. Or you need to figure out a better course that you truly want to study (preferably MSc or PhD in a course that you can credibly justify to the VO, in spite of your previous MSc in Management). I would advice you to read parts 7 and/or 8 of the thread since you are a complex applicant. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

@obiwann, welcome to the Canadian thread. I know your moniker very well. I used to read the German thread a whole lot and you are one of the gurus on there. My bro (now in Canada) almost went to Germany (took IELTS, got MSc admission for Comp Science, etc), and all the guidance we used was from most of you and eke40seven's posts on the German student visa thread. You are a very helpful person. I would advise that you read any or a combination of Parts 5-8 (Part 9 is not as solid). If you can read part 7 & 8, you will be set. Also, look up old posts written by people like Team12, me (thesoj), khalesi, Onyeoma3, montrealer, sholay2011. All of those monikers are of people in graduate school (both MSc & PhD) in Canada with the exception of me, lol. I got on this thread last year to help two siblings get their Canada TRVs for graduate school. I live in the country just south of the Canadian border. Here is an amazing resource for you: this post (click here) provides a bunch of enumerated information that may answer some initial questions. Cheers. 2 Likes |

You are welcome. Also, keep in mind that it may be possible to get admitted into a master's program even with a 2:2. But to do this you have to put together an amazing application and recommendation letters. To be honest tho, it would still be very hard to get admission with it. Look into uOttawa, some of their masters programs accept 2:2 from Nigerian applicants. Ed321: |

The tone of your question implies that you plan to plagiarize somebody else's SOP, a very common trend I have seen among Nigerian applicants. If you plan to go for a graduate degree then you need to be able to write it all by yourself from scratch. If you don't get used to being able to think critically and write your own original thoughts, then you will be in for a very rude shock if/when you start school Canada. Most graduate programs are writing & thinking intensive, and an inability to present clear arguments in writing will make it extremely difficult for you to succeed in school or at work. Also, the penalty for plagiarism in Canada is stiff; you get a big fat ZERO on any assignment or test in which you plagiarized. In some cases, you get expelled. Also, your admission application WILL be rejected if they find out AT ANY TIME that you plagiarized your SOP. Just do a Google search on how to write a graduate school SOP and then follow the guidelines. If you find an SOP online, use it as a sample but DO NOT copy any part of it. My sister was just telling me this week of two Nigerian students in her Canada MSc program who got failing semester grades because they plagiarized the proposal the professor asked them to write. Another one keeps running around telling people that he'll pay if somebody can write his proposal for him. Start improving yourself now, before it is too late. adewoledamola: 8 Likes 1 Share |

The only way to know for sure is if you directly ask (call or email) the admission directors or prog administrators of several Mechanical Engineering MSc programs. No one on this thread can give you a 100% accurate answer to your question. Ed321: |

@Churkie, sorry about the delay. In your application that was refused, did you include an SOP explaining why you were switching from polymer to petroleum engineering? Did you explain why you were going for a Diploma instead of a PGD or MSc? Also, keep in mind that a study leave letter (& future employment letter) is sort of useless if your employer's business line is completely unrelated to your program of study in Canada. 2 Likes |

@bosypumpin Yayyy! I am sooo happy for you. Congratulations. I am thrilled that all the work you put in the application (especially all the careful explanations to the VO) were well received. Go to Canada and succeed, sister. 3 Likes |

Some of your questions are trivial and show that you need to browse the English department websites of some of the schools in Canada that offer an English Phd. You will get more responses to your questions if you pared them down to the ones for which you can't find easy answers by searching Google. For example, you ask if ielts/gmat/toefl is needed, you would easily find the answer to this by browsing various English department websites. You also ask if you can work as a teaching assistant or lecturer while studying for a Phd; you would know the answer to this if you had done some very basic searches. Just fyi, a PhD is a research degree so you might wanna consider putting those research skills to work now. In any case, let me answer the questions that you might not easily find straightforward answers to: 1. Are there schools with affordable tuition or any that is tuition free? No school is tuition free, but some are cheaper than others. e.g. Memorial University of Newfoundland, Brandon University, etc. Use google to find more. 3. What is the typical cost of accomodation like [in naira]? $400CAD-$600CAD/month 5. Is it easy to get a visa for PhD studies? With a well-packaged app, yes. 7. Are there academic opportunities for PhD holders ? Yes, Canada needs professors and researchers tho nothing is guaranteed. 9. How much do I need to survive on a monthly basis as a PhD student? CIC says you need $10,000CAD/year for living expenses. fratermathy: 4 Likes |
