No, sorry. Your SOP should be your own story; the questions an SOP should address have been repeatedly discussed on this forum.

In your SOP, you need to passionately explain how you will use your course of study in Nigeria. You need to be as specific, explicit, detailed, and concise as possible. You also need to highlight the employment options in Nigeria for someone of your course.

hello house, ur pikin don come again.

Three to four concise paragraphs. Definitely not up to a full page... no more than half a single-spaced page. You will have the opportunity to send a longer email if the prof responds and asks you follow-up questions.

An excellent SOP increases your chances of admission but does not guarantee it. This is why it is recommended to apply to 3-4 schools. From your post, it seems like you used your "excellent" SOP to apply to only one school. Even someone with a 4.9 CGPA is not guaranteed admission to every school they apply for. While CGPA and excellence of SOP are key factors, keep in mind that the admissions committee also decides whom to admit based on applicant compatibility with their program. Hope is not lost though... just apply to multiple schools with your "excellent" SOP and make sure to customize it to each school's program/courses/research.

Also, in the relative sense your CGPA is not necessarily that high given that there are usually a lot of other engineering applicants with much higher CGPAs.... I know this for a fact. This is not to discourage you, but to encourage you to find ways to make your application stand out to each school. For example, students with lower than average CGPAs sometimes get admitted if there was something in the application that stood out to the admissions committee.

Finally, ensure that your SOP is truly excellent. I have read several supposedly excellent SOPs that were actually the opposite.

olujastro:
I actually chose M.Eng to save myself the stress of looking for a supervisor who will hardly respond to your email. For the first application(UofM) I did, perhaps I was naive not to value the importance of a good SOP. But for the second(UofR), I'm sure it was excellent at least from the views of my former colleagues now in top US schools. The only aspect I may not be too sure of is the academic references. Of my two referees, one is a Dr. while the other is doing his PhD. Could that be an issue as opposed to using Profs? I no get Professor friends oh.

Hello peeps!!!
My brother got the passport request notice today!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

He is a very complex applicant with no funds of his own (absolute zero), no employment letter (he was self-employed but he made very little from it and didn't register the company), and zero travel history outside West Africa. But we worked hard to get the VO to see that he wasn't lazying about since he finished BSc about five years ago. We put together a really good application (with lots of proof) in spite of the complexity of his application, and apparently the VO was impressed. But let's wait until we see the visa sha.... I previously discussed his application here and here and here.

@fatanu, the email from your department is indirectly telling you that you should find a professor who would like to take you on as a student.
Start contacting professors in that department now and use this as a guide: https://www.nairaland.com/2367106/travelling-canada-part-8/28#34729512

I agree with kris99's post below EXCEPT the bolded.

Folks, do not lie at the port of entry. Don't start your voyage into Canada by disobeying its laws! Declare whatever needs to be declared, and check the Canadian Border Services Agency website to determine what you can or cannot carry with you. It is very straightforward.
Kris99:
Travel Tip #1:
Do not put important documents, money and laptop in your main luggage. our might not be guaranteed that it will not be stolen from the airport in Nigeria after you have checked-in. Keep relevant documents such as passport, offer letter, proof of payment receipt or scholarship documents in your hand luggage. These documents will come handy when you touch down and head to join the immigration queue to obtain your study and work permit. There are instances where students kept valuables in main luggage and had them missing. 40-60min as you approach your destination( say the Pearson Airport in Toronto or Montreal) you will be asked by the air hostess to fill a declaration form. On this form you must provide the following information: Biodata, address you lived in in Nigeria, Contact number of someone home, address you will be staying in Canada, whether you have funds on you to declare or not, whether you are carrying any food item in your main luggage or not. For some of us, the smartest answer to give them is that you carry no funds on you( cos the moment you declare you do carry you must disclose the amount and go througha long process of clearance) . Same with food items. you will be asked to disclose..even if u carried stork fish or indomie i beg make unna no disclose am. It complicates things.

You have not shown that krisss, kriss77, and kris99 have the same BBM pins. The screenshots you posted show two Kris99 posts with the same BBM pin, and one kriss77 post without any BBM pin. So I don't understand how you authoritatively conclude that all three monikers are of the same person.

In any case, I think most people here should use their discretion when accepting help. Also, I don't have any suspicions about kris99, though this is not to say I vouch for any anonymous person on this forum. Unsubstantiated accusations of this nature could derail the thread unnecessarily. Let's not discourage generosity on the forum, BUT whoever wants to accept help should accept it with his/her eyes open!

Don't treat this as a gamble. Make sure you can justify to the VO whichever program you use to apply for your TRV. The burden of proof on you is of course higher if you are applying to a different course than your BSc, but it is not a big deal as long as you can sufficiently justify it to the VO. You can justify your chosen course through your BSc or work experience or any other undertaking that you can write about (with proof).

Several people on this thread (including yours truly) have explained over and over what is necessary to address to justify your purpose of visit. I would recommend you not rush to reapply so that you can read the thread. You could go through all my postings as I have addressed these issues dozens of times. Also go through the postings of people like @Team12 @Khalesi @ayooluwatoni @tnuola etc, or just read the whole of Part 7 or 8. At this point it sounds like you are not sure what you want to study and why. First think deeply about this before you rush to reapply.

Well, yeah the VO likely saw your application as a ploy to flee Naija. Getting a visa for a business diploma course (which is way below BSc level) is a very tall task given that Nigerian schools offer similar business courses, given that you already have a BSc, and given that admission to such a diploma course in Canada is very very easy. The VO would highly doubt that the business diploma course would be significantly different from a similar course in Naija... this raises significant questions about your intentions.

Now if you had extraordinarily strong ties to Naija (e.g. you already run a very profitable business, you have a strong travel history to OECD countries, you own valuable property, and/or have wife & kids, etc) then maybe your application would have a much higher chance. But it doesn't seem that you have any of this so it makes sense that the VO did not find your application plausible. Sorry about that.

If you say that you want to go to Canada to learn how to run a "big business" successfully, then you need to be able to make an argument to the VO that the program you are going for would indeed equip you with the skills. Even me, I am not convinced that a business diploma course would sufficiently teach you how to run a "big business" successfully, let alone a VO.

You would have a better chance with an MBA admission or a graduate diploma program that is specifically targeted towards running big businesses (you would only likely find such program at a university's school of business/management).

afolaseg:
Its a business diploma course i applied for so as to have knowledge on how to run the proposed business. Not yet in Nigeria. Its a new business that is not in Nigeria.. I applied for it so that i will be able to run the business successfully.

I don't think you should accuse him of lying before trying to clarify any inconsistencies you see in his story.

In any case, someone else on this thread PMed me that she also got approval mail (she hasn't picked up her passport yet tho) without doing medicals, so the story seems more plausible than you think.

Wow, this professor is a very nice person. That he/she took the time to read your SOP and nicely offer suggestions on how to improve it is a sign that he/she would likely be a very patient and kind advisor to work with.

Also, based on my reading of the email, the professor is still interested in funding you but doesn't want to over-promise and under-deliver (this is very normal in North American culture). He/she wants you to understand that you need to have your own funds for living expenses so that you can get a visa. But if you read the email closely, the professor is implicitly saying he/she would do his/her best to pay you a stipend should his/her grant application be successful.

I would recommend you make the recommended changes to the SOP and apply sharp sharp. Also, do respond to the professor thanking him/her for the email, and reiterating your interest in working with him/her. Do tell him/her that you will be able to show proof of funds to the embassy but that obtaining funding from him/her (or the department) would go a long way in enabling you to attend and contribute maximally to their program. Gbam!

But also try to get funding from another school in case this one doesn't pan out. Don't put all your eggs in one basket.

Jlakeside:
Please House,.. I sent my SOP to the Professor that gave me a GO-AHEAD in applyiny to Brandon University for perusal. This is his reply in bolded.. Though, he promised me of funds if his 5-year research grant he applied for is granted, but I think he's saying a different story.. What should i do?.please.

Almost impossible, bruv. But, it depends on your course of interest and your years of experience and how remarkable your post-uni accomplishments have been. It may benefit you to do a test like GRE or GMAT and score above the 90th percentile, and take some PGD classes in Naija with nothing less than excellent grades. If your story and post-uni accomplishments are convincing enough (e.g. you invented something impressive, or you are a gifted artist and are applying for an arts program, or you created a business that solves a lot of pesky problems for poor people and are applying for an MBA, etc), maybe a school would make exceptions for you. But this is a very very tall task.

In summary, I would say your chances would be boosted if you have extraordinary accomplishments and are willing to try as many schools as possible. Otherwise, your chances are like 1% or less.
