@ EbonyMerma
Don't take this the wrong way but i am starting to get pissed. I f you are that much a fan of Nolly you should know that its been like 20 years and the film made 20 years ago and today have no differences. About funding, believe me when i say there is more than adequate funding for good films but cos of greed and people who keep praising these crappy work of doom, the filmmakers go "Oh they are enjoying the shit we feed them so why not feed them some more shit instead of giving them ice-cream". Get my point

Hiphop became accepted world-wide because the world finally started listening and not because hiphop changed to suit anybody. Your theory is wrong cos gangster rap was even being enjoyed by white sub-urban kids. So if you think the world is suddenly going to wake up and say "wow, these Nigerian films are good why haven't we been watching them all this time?" Girl, you are in for the biggest shocker of your life , but then again you knew it was all a pile of bull didn't you.

And please don't compare Hollywood movies with Nolly please. You said, and i quote"You know what's different about the west is that America can produce a crappy movie and still be proud of Hollywood. The movie may tank at the box office, but people wont' say "Hollywood" stinks." Hollywood occasionally makes crappy movies, but we do it here all the time, its a business.

Puh-lease! No more crap about Nollywood actors working their but off. I mean come on you've seen some of these films, does that look like work to you, personally i think its just one big JOKE.

@vescucci
Relax my brother, the revolution has started. Trust me you'll feel it soon.
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood: Don't We Need A Revolution? by Thirdborn: 7:45am On Oct 25, 2008
@EbonyMerma
Whew! now i get it. You just love the African feeling thingy, OK we can give you that. But what really jerks our chain (most of us) is the quality, a lot of the content sucks too, but the quality really kills us. We just wanna see better.
If you saw one of these movies in a format that was similar to , say, The SOULFOOD movie, you'd enjoy it more. TRUE or FALSE?
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood: Don't We Need A Revolution? by Thirdborn: 9:30pm On Oct 24, 2008
@EbonyMerma
Is this some kind of joke? No, i mean really? what , how can you you watch a movie by , say Denzel, watch a Nollywood movie then , in your right state of mind say , ok i get it, you didn't say they are good. you just said you love them. Where can i get the drug that can make me delusional enough?

PROUD? Of what? These films?

Sister, please you should be helping us out not helping us in.
By the way nice to have you here.

I meant it seems you were making 2 points at the same time, so i wasn't sure what to drop. i read everything through (hey, i started this thread. DUH!) if you re-check you'll find someone else felt the same. Its not a competeion of course just like minds (smart people) having a discussion about something we care about. Maybe you don't know it but you are essential to this thread. Ride on my brother(fist in the air).

TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood: Don't We Need A Revolution? by Thirdborn: 8:33am On Oct 22, 2008
Hello my people. Sisikill I see you have been holding fort. Sorry about my absence, my story long o’. Its nice to see we have some new people and no Kanto.
I’ve been trying to catch up, so here it goes.

@Lucabrasi, I like your gun but I’m not sure I dig your bullets. Cos I see that you are trying to make a point but not sure what that point is exactly but this is what I say from what I gather so far.

I have to say first that Hollywood and Bollywood operate without their government, just like Nolyy they are driven by investments. I have said repeatedly that a movie does not have to be expensive to be a good movie. My person Sisikill used the “Blair Witch Project” as an example, the movie cost just $25,000, which is not too far from what nolly spends on their crap. Can’t Nigerian film makers learn how to improvise? There is always the “Robert Rodriguez way” or the “Mariachi style”. Rodriguez is the whiz kid director who brought you movies like Desperado, Spy kids, Once upon a time in Mexico, Sin City, From dusk till dawn and others. Do you know that his first movie “El-Mariachi” on which he cut so many corners by working on it as the cinematographer, director, editor, camera man, etc. cost only $7,000 to make. It went on to make millions. So what’s the nolly excuse. Even worse, Rodriguez did not go to film school, hell even Quinten Tarantino and Spielberg didn’t go to film school.

All that stuff I see about people talking about buying land and this and that…, Nollywood are always bragging about making so much money. Why can’t they re-invest this money into making better movies for us. They don’t have to buy land, let them stick to shooting on locations. They don’t have to buy cameras and equipment, let them rent like every other major production company in the world, that’s right Cameras are rented from companies set up to provide services like that e.g. Panavision. According to Rodriguez, “find what you can afford, what you can get and make a good film with them.” You see. Improvise.

Some people here have said some great stuff (A-Town). Enough talk about DVD releases. Theatres are the way to go. I know some people are going to start crying blah blah blah, but check this. We have Silverbird, City mall, New Metro and Cedi Plaza, these are the major ones. Then we have The old cinemas that lay dormant for years that some churches have started taking some of them over for worship e.g. Penn cinema, Casino and many others scattered all over Nigeria. All that is needed is Refurbishing, a plan and telling filmmakers that if their films meet certain standards they will be screened at these cinemas. Not only do I guarantee you that there will be an improvement, I also guarantee you that the filmmakers will turn a profit in a couple of weeks. You see it is actually quite simple. All you need is good people and good films.

Enough talk about people not buying DVDs, Do you know what a classic is? I bet almost everyone up in here has a DVD of their favourite series (HOUSE, LOST, PRISON BREAK, etc.) I myself have a collectors special edition of the GODFATHER trilogy. If a great Nigerian film is made some people will definitely buy and keep their copy instead of borrowing or renting. No present day Nollywood project will ever be a classic because those that watch these crap watch them once and move on to another on and will forget in due time what the crap was about. I don’t believe anyone here can say they forgot a thing about TEN COMMANDMENTS, BEN HUR, SOUND OF MUSIC, etc. You get my point don’t you?
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood: Don't We Need A Revolution? by Thirdborn: 9:07am On Oct 07, 2008
@Sisikill, oh you no believe me abi, just go back and check TV/Movies there is a subject titled Genevieve Nnaji ready for Hollywood?, you'd be surprised what you find there. Happy reading(or not).
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood: Don't We Need A Revolution? by Thirdborn: 9:51pm On Oct 05, 2008
I keep wondering why Nigerian film makers and their public announcers don't get it. Apart from the brain bruising episode of REEL NOLLY i had the misfortune of watching today, i also read some other stuff on nairaland. Do you know people are still bragging instead of waking up to smell the coffee or akamu or what ever they drink. I hear say them say, Genevieve (i spell am correct so?) can make it in Hollywood and that they should be lucky to have her, blah blah blah.

One question to those people. If Genevieve deserves that much how come she hasn't been cast in a single Hollywood movie that has been shot in Africa? e.g LAST KING OF SCOTLAND, HOTEL RWANDA, SHOOTING DOGS, SCENES OF LORD OF WAR, SAHARA,etc.

I am not saying she's a terrible actress, but if Nollywood was as respected as some brag it is, i believe they would have invited many Nolly actors and actresses not T.V stars from other African countries. Anybody feel me here?
TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood: Don't We Need A Revolution? by Thirdborn: 9:35pm On Oct 05, 2008
what up my peeps. took a time out to read some other stuff posted on Nollywood related pages. Ammo is always needed in these situations you know.

@vescucci, about the budget thing, If a nolly director brags that he made a movie with over 10,000,000 naira (which is always the case, but we know they are lying) don't you think that can make a good quality movie? i bet ya it sure can. Blair witch project cost $25,000, even though there were some unfavourable reviews about it, it made a mark in Hollywood. There are a bunch of hollywood movies that were made for less than $100,000 (hollywood shuffle, clerks, brothers mcmullen, etc.) a lot less than many claim to make their Nollycrap with. Some of these films ended up with awards. Blair witch at that time entered record books cos of the profit it made ($120,000,000). So you see, budgeting shouldn't really constitute a problem.

@Sisikill, nice article you put there. its a wonder i hadn't seen it before cos i'm always out for stuff like that. Who even wrote it. Him try well well. ride on

TV/Movies / Re: Nollywood: Don't We Need A Revolution? by Thirdborn: 2:03am On Oct 03, 2008
Anything goes here. Throw in anything that can help, get people thinking, make those who feel they are getting the best from Nolly realize they are being fed cow dung, make people want to belong, make them want to participate (criticizing and hands on participation) in making the film industry an industry worth mentioning. All we know is that right now it's an apology. So anything that even scratches the surface is welcome. WAKE EM ALL UP.

TV/Movies / Nollywood: Don't We Need A Revolution? by Thirdborn: 8:27pm On Oct 02, 2008
Five years ago we were frequently punished with the worst crap we could endure on T.V. I am talking about music videos. Radio on the other hand was different; we could listen to music from talented musicians. Even then i craved something better, I did try to get involved, It wasn’t easy, people just wanted quick cut and paste instead of the well done job. Nobody would pay for better quality (can you imagine). The consequent results were the eye sores we sat through in the late 90s and early 2000s. So what happened?

A REVOLUTION! First it was CHANNEL O then MTV. Channel O asked for videos from musicians, blah blah and musicians suddenly realized that in order to really be seen by Africa, you needed to be on one of these music channels, and how else could they do this but make a video that wouldn’t end up in the dustbin. One or two people put good stuff on there (JJC & 419 Squad, MODE 9, Ruggedman, etc). Then all of a sudden everyone was in on the act. This gave rise to new wave directors like DJ Tee, Woody and now Clarence Peters….etc. Now do you see the results? Awards, International recognition, International shows, Endorsements, etc.

NOW “NOLLYWOOD”: If you have been here even for a short while you would have realized by now that there are people here who love Nollywood films and don’t want anyone sating anything negative about them, and those who think “Nollywood home videos” are the biggest abomination since film was invented and only wish for a change or REVOLUTION.

Under this topic/subject, I want us to actually discuss what Nollywood is, how it is, what is wrong, what can be done, what should be done, etc. Because it is embarrassing that we are where we are and the world moves forward leaving us in the dust.

So Nollywood lovers, haters, critics and all…Lets start a revolution. If we don’t start somewhere we’ll never go anywhere. Trust me it will not be easy, Some might say we are just talking and can’t do nothing of our own, but criticism is a tool that aids change, I dare any to say Ruggedman’s “Ehen” did not contribute immensely to the hiphop music industry. Who knows, a movie making alliance can be formed here (fingers crossed).
TV/Movies / Re: Genevieve Nnaji for Hollywood? by Thirdborn: 8:12pm On Oct 02, 2008
I don't know why many people here have not asked themselves one question. Gene does not have to go to Hollywood. Hollywood has been to Africa to shoot many movies over the years. The thing is of all the movies they have shot why have they not cast Gene in one single scene. WHY? cos she is either not good enough or is in an industry that is not good enough. That's why they use T.V stars, I repeat T.V stars (not movie stars) from other African countries in their movies. Ain't that a shame?

TV/Movies / Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by Thirdborn: 6:02pm On Oct 02, 2008
We have 2 major problems in Nigeria, 1 is illiteracy and the other is ignorance, a serious problem we have is when people possess both.

kanto and followers, i am surprised you can write cos you surely can't read, read first, think, then reply. simple, you know like a b c, I first said scrapping is a last solution, we can fix it, but if it’s filled with people like you, then no hope, lets kuku jail all nollywood people.

You keep saying nollywood is young, that it's a private investment of individuals, blah blah blah, What do you think the rest (Holly, Bolly and Honk kong) are, Government innitiatives? Get real and read. Oops too hard for you.

Let me remind all here that there can never be progress without criticiszm, don't condemn it, listen and use it where-ever a point is made. This is how steps are made to good things.

You say the world is watching nollywood? you need to expand your reading from "manuals of the third reich" by Hitler to more informative sources. Nollywood audiences abroad are made up of Nigerians(who just miss home) have you read some things the foreign world say about our films? We can't even screen movies during most film festivals cos the format we use is not good enough. If you pour pure spring water into a dirty plastic cup and pour tap water into a shiny glass cup, which one do you think a foreigner is going to accept for drinking? Presentation is essential. A terrible story in good format is more likely to get attention than a good story in terrible format. Get it?

Nigerians have been fed rubbish for so long that after a long time the rubbish starts to appeal to them and they forget that they deserve better. This applies to every aspect of our lives in this country (Governance and all). There is no harm in asking for better, the result is usually you actually get the better or best. The reason Nollywood cahnnels are springing up is cos many like you enjoy the crap they feed you. Newsflash! Many of us know we deserve better.

To educate you some more (cos i so hate stupidity) "Nollywood" as a name is young, the "Nigerian film Industry" is not, we made better movies in the seventies than we do today. We were the first to own a T.V station in " friggin" Africa for heaven's sake. Don't you think we should be on top of things? For your info nollywood is the "third largest producer of films" not "third largest movie industry". DUH!

So who is better now, people that want a film industry scrapped cos a few people make it  whack or lunatics who want a country scrapped cos a few people are not supposed to be in politics?

Wetin bring tribalism inside this matter? You don't even know where i'm from or maybe you need a dictionary to check words before you use them.
P.S. I am involved in the Nigerian entertainment industry (music and T.V.), I am here cos I care.
also like to add, i appreciate some peeps up in here, especially you sisikill.

I read a lot of posts here , (not all) and i am surprised all of the people writing them just want to own this team, or be affiliated with the potential buyers of this team cos they are Nigerians. Did anybody even ask who these "Nigerians" are who want to buy Newcastle? What if they are ex-governors trying to spend looted funds, or drug barons, or, I am not ruling out the fact that they could be legitimate but why all the secrecy? Let them reveal their identities and let us know where this cash is coming from.
TV/Movies / Re: Petition To Scrap The Nigerian Movie Industry by Thirdborn: 9:59pm On Sep 30, 2008
I will like to say first, thanks to who ever started this, because its a place to start. Let those who know talk, those who don't know learn and those who want to learn ask. (mooretes thanks o').

First and foremost let's remember to call it "The Nigerian home video industry". Calling it "Movie industry" implies we can compare with movies from other parts of the world (Joke).

Let's call scrapping the "home video industry" the last solution, because there might be a glimmer of hope. I however implore my people to make some serious changes because without some changes we ain't going nowhere.

First admit that the Nigerian Home video crap crap crap is so terrible, whack, an apology, a disgrace, a sin, , whatever you want to call it. It has been called a lot of things but please never use the words good or ok to describe them. Another term i hate is "trying", (at least we are trying). Did your parents ever let you get off punishment when you came last or second to the last in class in primary school by just saying you were "trying"? NO, they beat the crap out of you till you did better or just plain croaked (RIP). If the Nigerian blah blah industry is not beaten into shape it just won't change.

Please no more "third largest in the world crap". Those who don't think should realize that we are the third highest producers of films, or should i say crap in the world. Did i hear you say you want backup info, ok, India(Bollywood) is the first producing over 2000 movies a movies a year that generate between 1.5 and 2 billion dollars, America (Hollywood) makes about 2000 films which generate over 9.8 billion dollars annually, Nigeria (Nollywood) makes almost 2000 movies a year which generate about 250 million dollars (according to reports received in the last 2 years). Then get this…Hong Kong/China is ranked fourth but generates over a almost 2 billion dollars. So how can Nigeria be the third “Largest movie industry”? “Nollywood” needs to stop twisting facts….in short lying to boost films. The first thing that needs to be done is to get able hands (talented writers, producers, cinematographers, etc.) or call them out. then we can build a “Movie Industry”.
