I am faced with a dilemma on how to react to the body language of a female friend who always and relentlessly scratches her front(abunna) whenever she sets her eyes on me. It is so serious that even my friends have observed her body language towards me, as she only does that when she sees me. Could that be a seductive and inviting sign? or it could be something else and how do I signal her that I have understood the body language? Please your advice will be highly appreciated as I am a novice. |

Senator Gbemisola Saraki, the eldest daughter of the late strongman of Kwara politics, Dr Olusola Saraki, finally dumped the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for the All Progressives Congress (APC) yesterday. Gbemisola announced her decision to team up with APC in a statement she personally signed, copies of which was made available to newsmen in Ilorin yesterday. She said: “After wide consultations, we found in APC a platform that mirrors the ideals of our political family, both in content and context, especially with under the leadership of General Muhammadu Buhari. “We are assured in the promise of the APC for a new Nigeria. We are confident in the commitment of the President-elect to social justice, rule of law and economic posterity for all. “I therefore call on all my supporters from across the state to take what we have started a notch further by going out to register with the All Progressive Congress Party, APC, and to work actively for a resounding success of the APC in the forthcoming polls. “Given the choices and the times, I am convinced beyond doubt that Kwara will be better served by the APC-led government in the state. The two- term former senator had, on the eve of the presidential election, directed her supporters to vote for the APC. Her statement reads in part: “I come before you for a formal declaration of our move to the APC. This is not to underplay the reality that we had joined the APC a fortnight ago, just before the presidential and National Assembly elections, but I believe I owe you the obligation to formally announce this move to you out of a deep respect for your love and your support of the GRS Movement over the years. “This decision is a product of wide consultations with members of the GRS Political Family that cut across all the 16 local government areas of the state on the one hand and the leadership of APC on the other. It was in furtherance of this that, on the eve of the presidential and National Assembly elections, I asked all my supporters to troop out en masse and vote for all the candidates of the APC.” The former senator used the occasion to respond to those who wondered why she was taking this step. “Several friends and associates have asked me why we moved and I have responded by telling them that the reasons are not farfetched; the reason is as important as who we are as political organization. “Our ideology finds root in championing the cause of the grassroots, upholding equity and justice, and especially the vision for a meaningful and passionate leadership. We believe that a true leadership must be predicated on certain values that must be sacrosanct, which must also follow the sanctity of democratic ethos.” She noted that she and her followers joined Kwara PDP for the main reason of re-engineering the processes of leadership through the party in order to mirror the true aspirations of Kwarans but that the party was hijacked by some persons. “”Thus, instead of presenting pragmatic solutions and workable templates for developing Kwara, the party abandoned presenting alternative policies and went on meaninglessly attacking and castigating not only the opposition, but even those within the party, especially my very self for no other good reason other than the accident of my birth – a birth of which, by the way, I am very proud of.” According to her, the last straw was the failure of the PDP to respect the place of women in politics and their collective struggle for equity and fair play in the country and especially in the state. “Yet we have all had to endure the patronizing campaign adverts of the PDP’s self-proclaimed “generosity” towards women, the self-patting of its achievements of the number of women appointed into the president’s cabinet.” True representation, she explained, starts at the grassroots and builds up, as such women want true representation at all levels, and especially into elected positions and not to have to lobby for positions on a platter. “The APC has shown that it believes in ensuring that women are treated with respect and dignity and assisted to excel in the political arena as shown by the emergence of the Taraba State gubernatorial candidate,” she said. “The choice was, therefore, clear, a bold step into the future that guarantees fairness, justice and hope. Thus, the move from the PDP into the APC was an easy decision for us considering our history with PDP and our vision for our future.” http://leadership.ng/news/423820/gbemi-saraki-moves-to-apc |

The June 1st enforcement date for the enforcementof speed limiters in the country remains sacrosanct, Corps Marshall, Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Boboye Oyeyemi has said. Speaking yesterday at a joint press conference with road safety stakeholders in Abuja, he said all commercial vehicles were expected to have installed the speed limiters device before the fixed date to avoid being prosecuted. He, however said, he was satisfied with the level of compliance by the relevant stakeholders with the innovation. The Corps Marshal said the aim of the device was to ensure that commercial vehicles on the road get their speed controlled to avoid road casualties and fatalities. Oyeyemi said when the speed limiters initiative is fully complied with, it will put Nigeria amongst countries where it has significantly reduced road crashes. Representative of the National President, National Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO), South West zonal chairman, Alhaji Ganiyu Salami appealed to the corps marshal for a training of drivers against dangerous driving. Deputy President of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Chief Elijah Uwumokpo appealed to the corps to ensure that vehicle users are able to get their drivers licence two months after they have gotten the temporary licence to avoid harassment. http://www.dailytrust.com.ng/daily/news/50241-speed-limiters-enforcement-june-1-remains-sacrosanct-frsc |

Drama erupted in Ejigbo, Lagos state, when Mrs Funke Oludotu dragged her husband Omodayo to Customary Court, asking for the dissolution of their marriage because her husband refused to pay her bride price. Responding to the wife’s claim, Mr Oludotu said that her parents gave her out in marriage free of charge and there was no need to pay the bride price, especially now when she already had children for him. The quarrel between the couple caused laughter among those present at the court during the trial, PM News reports. Funke told the judge that she left her parents’ house to Omodayo’s house and they started living together as husband and wife, and produced two kids. She stressed that her husband had not formalised the marriage by paying her dowry, instead he pleaded with her and deceived her to have another pregnancy. Moreover, Mrs Oludotu insisted on dissolution of their 8-year marriage on ground that she was not treated as his genuine wife. According to her, the husband was cruel to her and their two kids and did not respect her parents. The woman added that despite the fact that her husband did not pay any bride price, he bet her regularly in the presence of her parents. “He claimed that I am his wife but he did not pay a dime as my dowry and still wanted me to obey him always,” she said. Funke asked asked for divorce so that she could move on with her life and Omodayo should take care of the children. During the trial Omodayo admitted that he had not paid her bride price but stressed that Funke’s parents accepted him as their son-in-law. He said their marriage was blessed with two children and he was taking care of his family before his wife left his house. As his wife is no longer interested in him, Omodayo told the court to divorce them. |

Ahmad Salkida, a Nigerian journalist and conflict analyst, who is said to have access to the leadership of Boko Haram has reacted to the sect’s reported allegiance to the Islamic State. According to him, the sect’s widely reported allegiance (or Bay’ah) to the Islamic State is said to be the result of a long drawn deliberation within and outside the group on its ideology, The Cable reports. A source with links to the insurgents explained that with this allegiance, the leader of Boko Haram, Abubakar Shekau could be replaced as Abubakar Bagdadi, leader of ISIS and world’s most wanted jihadist leader will now be making decisions for the sect. “The sect has expressed support to IS in the past but not Bay’ah in this formal sense, as Islam prescribed. “As long as Muslims pledged allegiance to a leader, he must accept it. In fact, it was long overdue. What this also means is Abubakar Bagdadi will henceforth take decision for the insurgents. Shekau’s self-governance has ended on Saturday, the 7th of March 2015,” the source said. Multiple sources claim that the emissaries by Bagdadi are already in the country and are already making a lot of changes, adding that Baghdadi may choose to even change the Imam in Nigeria if he so wishes or send permanent emissaries or teachers to guide what is now the local Boko Haram Shura. Explaining the meaning of Bay’ah, the source said according to some Sunni Islamic scholars, Bay’ah can only be offered to the leader of the Muslims. Once allegiance is offered, as in the case of Boko Haram to IS, it is accepted because the leader that is being offered Bay’ah assumes total and absolute authority over his subjects, except these subjects were to discover that the actions of the leader contradicted their kind of beliefs. In recent times, Nigerian troops and multinational forces have intensified attacks on Boko Haram and many are of the opinion that the sect is getting weak and that is why they have reached out to IS to reinforce its bonds with other groups and individuals in the region, and save itself from drowning. According to Salkida, inside assessment has revealed that there is a difference between taking back Boko Haram territories and defeating the group’s terror network with its roots in many parts of the region. Defeating the group’s terror network would require deep, strategic and consistent institutional framework. Another cause of apprehension is that both Chad and Niger that joined forces with Nigeria against the sect on Sunday share direct borderlines with Libya, IS most powerful arm outside of Iraq and Syria. But IS is not only in Iraq, Syria or Libya, it’s an ideology that may be found in unexpected places. “For now, many in West Africa have every cause to be anxious by the new Boko Haram and IS alliance. In the absence of any intelligence breakthrough that may reveal the slightest clue on the following: who are Boko Haram’s current leaders? How many are they? What are their names? Where are they located? How are decisions taken within the group? What is their actual source of funding? How many cells do they operate outside the main war combatants? People in the region can be certain of more bloody surprises ahead. “If our intelligence community for years were repeatedly confused about whether or not Shekau was alive, his whereabouts, and were misled into believing bogus ceasefires and false alarms over the release of abducted girls, how can people trust the same security community with their borders?” he queried. The reported Boko Haram and ISIS collaboration has caused quite a stir, though some have described it as propaganda. The United States government has however waded into the matter. A United States Congressman, Stephen F. Lynch, arrived in Nigeria on Wednesday, and is expected to meet with United States security and counter-terrorism personnel in the US Embassy in Nigeria. |
