A 37-year-old man was rushed to the Alex Ekwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital, Abakaliki, for treatment after he allegedly set himself ablaze.

The man, identified as Chinedu Nweze, allegedly set himself ablaze beside a classroom block at St. Patrick’s Primary School, Kpirikpiri, Abakaliki.

He was said to have tied his legs and wet himself with petrol before igniting fire.

It was gathered that Nweze, who hails from Umuogharu, Ezza North Local Government Area of the state, had complained to his neighbours of frustration and inability to feed himself, a day before the incident.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) has commended President Muhammadu Buhari on his assent to the new and improved N30,000 minimum wage for Nigerian workers.

The party’s reaction was contained in a statement by Mallam Lanre Issa-Onilu, National Publicity Secretary, All Progressives Congress (APC).

Snakes have chased Liberian President, George Weah out of office.

A snake was found in Weah’s office, forcing him to work from his private residence, according to the BBC.

The President’s Press Secretary, Smith Toby told the BBC that on Wednesday two black snakes were found in the foreign affairs ministry building, site of the official office.

All staff have been told to stay away until 22 April.

“It’s just to make sure that crawling and creeping things get fumigated from the building,” Mr Toby said.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs hosts the office of the president, so it did an internal memo asking the staff to stay home while they do the fumigation,” he said.

“The snakes were never killed,” Mr. Toby said, “There was a little hole somewhere [through which] they made their way back.”

Police and presidential security were seen guarding Weah’s residence in the capital, Monrovia. A fleet of vehicles including escorts jeeps were parked outside.

Mr. Toby said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs started to fumigate on Friday.

Olatunde Disu, former Technical Director, Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), on Monday, said that the Super Eagles needed the services of natural left wingers to have an edge over other teams in this year’s Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Disu made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) while reflecting on the chances of the senior national team at the coming AFCON 2019 to be hosted by Egypt.

The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, known as the Total 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, is scheduled to be the 32nd edition of the competition.

The tournament will hold from June 21 to July 19, 2019, and will see the Eagles making their 17th appearance in the competition having first qualified in 1963 held in Ghana.

Nigeria are three times champions of the tournament winning on home soil in 1980 with Disu an assistant coach, after then they won the tournament in Tunisia 1994 and South Africa 2013.

The team will be chasing its fourth glory when the tournament gets underway in Egypt in Group B being what many pundits term an easy group that includes Madagascar, Burundi and Guinea.

However, Disu said that for the Gernot Rohr’s team to excel, they needed an infusion of natural left footers to effectively contribute to the attacking lineups.

3. The Nigerian Air Force, NAF, said it lost one of its personnel during parachuting accident in Kaduna on Sunday.

Nigerian celebrities have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to put an end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), in seeking justice for Kolade Johnson.

Kolade was allegedly shot dead by a member of a police team, while he was watching a Premier League fixture between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur in Lagos on Sunday.

Speaking on the development, the Lagos Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bala Elkana, in a statement said suspects have been arrested and investigation begun into the matter.

Johnson’s death has since sparked widespread criticism from Nigerians and celebrities with a renewed call on the Federal Government to end the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (F-SARS) unit of the police.

Popular Nollywood actress, Adesua Wellington has joined Nigerians on social media to call for the end to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS).

Reports over the weekend alleged that some men identified as SARS officials shot dead one Kolade Johnson.

Reacting to the development, Spokesman for Lagos State Police Command, Bala Elkana, told NAN he was yet to be briefed of the incident.

This has since stirred an outcry for an end to SARS.

However, Adesua in a post on her Instagram page lamented the abuse of power by SARS officials.

1. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) on Tuesday, suspended the collation of results for the Rivers State governorship election.

Obo Effanga, the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) in the state, who announced this at the collation centre in Port Harcourt, the state capital, said the electoral body will continue with the exercise at 10am on Wednesday.

2. A Federal High Court in Abuja, has dismissed a suit by the African Action Congress (AAC), questioning the propriety of handling of the last governorship and State Assembly elections in Rivers State.

Justice Inyang Ekwo, in his judgment on Tuesday, said since the case was election-related, it was appropriate for the plaintiffs to take their case before an election tribunal.

3. The Nigerian Police has named two officers, as suspects in the shooting of Kolade Johnson.

The force name the suspects as Inspector Ogunyemi Olalekan and Sergeant Godwin Orji, saying the two men have been “subjected to internal disciplinary procedures”.

4. The Kogi State House of Assembly has recommended the removal of the Chief Judge of the State, Justice Nasiru Ajanah for alleged gross misconduct.

This followed the adoption of the report and recommendations of the house committee on public account which indicted the Kogi State High Court and Kogi Hajj Commission for financial breaches.

5. The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamdi Kanu, on Tuesday, again lambasted Justice Binta Nyako of an Abuja Federal High court, following the revocation of his bail.

The National leadership of National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has rejected the alleged anti-poor and anti-masses recruitment requirements of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

Mr. Adeyemi Azeez, NANS National Public Relations Officer (PRO) made the position of the students’ body known in a statement on Sunday in Abuja.

NANS alleged that it was a deliberate and well structured resolve to play out many graduates, especially those from the poor background.

According to him, it is no longer news, that regular occurrences of incessant strikes have long marred the education sector of the country.

“Therefore, ordinarily an undergraduate that applied for a four or five year programme will eventually end up staying nine or 10 years on campus pursuing a bachelor degree.

“NANS will not fall cheap of this deliberate attempt of disenfranchising majorly the real and qualified Nigerian graduates.

“These graduates, who have gone through rigorous stages within the Nigerian Universities and polytechnics, should not be disenfranchised of this opportunity.”

Azeez added that the association also make bold to say that unbiased research has shown that mostly graduates of government owned universities performs far better than graduates from expensive private institutions.

He, however, called on NNPC within a 72-hour ultimatum to withdraw all alleged anti-poor and anti-masses conditions.

“Failure to comply with this ultimatum, NANS will move out en-mass to protest or shut down the activities of NNPC.

Popular Nollywood actor and model, IK Ogbonna, has broken silence on divorce rumours concerning his marriage to a Colombian lady, Sonia.

Reports had been making the rounds that Ogbonna’s marriage to Sonia had crashed.

This was fuelled by her cryptic messages on Instagram, yanking off her wedding band and the removing of his name from her Instagram page.

However, the actor, while speaking with Hip TV, said they are not divorced as speculated.

He admitted that they were not as they used to be, but expressed hopes about things working out good.

“Sonia is currently living in Europe with their son where she is trying to combine her business and school.

“We are not divorced. Hopefully, things will work out good,” the model said.

An Abuja division of the Federal High Court has ordered the arrest of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB.

The Justice Binta Nyako-led court gave the order while deploring the continued absence of Kanu from court.

Justice Nyako also revoked the bail she granted Kanu in 2017, and directed that the proceedings of the trial will still continue even in the IPOB leader’s absence.

It would be recalled that Kanu, who was charged to court for treasonable felony by the federal government, was in the course of trial granted bail on heath ground aside other conditions on April 25, 2017.

However, Kanu went underground in September 2017 following the deployment of troops to the Southeast when his Umuahia country home was allegedly raided by soldiers.

The pro-Biafra separatist was later seen in Jerusalem on October 19.

He made a Facebook broadcast on October 21 where he said he left Nigeria because he could not get the necessary protection from the court.

Following his absence, Kanu’s three sureties under a N100 million bond each in aggregate of N300 million, have been in a legal battle to show cause why they should not produce Kanu or individually forfeit their bail bond to the Federal government.

Benue Rerun: INEC Begins Distribution Of Sensitive Materials
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has said it has commenced distribution of sensitive materials to areas the supplementary elections will hold today.

INEC Public Relations Officer in the state, Mr Terkaa Andyarigeria, disclosed this in a telephone interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Makurdi.

NAN gathered that the March 23 Governorship Supplementary Election will hold in 22 out of the 23 local government areas of the state.
