Politics / Nigerians Praise Buhari/osinbajo For Keeping Promise On Ogoni Clean-up by TShooyie: 7:13pm On Jan 23, 2020 |
Nigerians have praised President Muhammadu Buhari and Vice President Yemi Osinbajo for keeping their 2015 campaign promise to clean-up Ogoni, Rivers State, Southsouth Nigeria. Applauds for the Buhari administration poured in on Thursday after the Nigerian government tweeted a video of the progress on Ogoni clean-up. The project, which was recommended in 2011 by the United Nations Environment Programme, UNEP, and implemented by the Buhari administration is expected to cost $1 billion and to span over 25 years. Commending the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project, HYPREP, the Government of Nigeria wrote, "International communities commend the progress of work done by HYPREP on Ogoniland". Shortly after the tweet, thousands of Nigerians took to social media to laud the government for keeping its words. On Twitter, Mayowa Olaniyan described the clean-up as a major step towards peace in the Niger Delta region. “This is first step in bringing permanent peace to the Niger Delta region by restoring the environmental sanity of that area. Buhari and Osinbajo should be commended by everyone for taking this bold step,” he tweeted. Yinka Williams reckoned that for mankind, the clean-up of Ogoni was the proper thing to do. “Seeing old photos of the deplorable condition of the Ogoniland, I honestly cannot imagine how those people survived all these years. Kudos to HYPREP.” For Famuyide Olumide the clean-up showed that Ogoni was no longer ignored. “For decades the people of Ogoniland have been neglected and allowed to suffer wanton destruction of their land, air and the means of livelihood. Buhari has proved a point and the job has commenced because there is a Political will. Princewill Osaroejiji, an Ogoni Local youth leader provided more update on the clean-up. “Very soon, the water will be free of hydrocarbons. At last, something concrete is happening, very soon our people will begin to drink clean water, go to the farms and fish in rivers.” Lovely Agbene said the Buhari administration has paved for clean energy in the Niger Delta region. “This is why in spite of Buhari shortcomings which is inevitable as humans we keep believing and praying for him, he is cleansing up mess of those who enjoy the oil boom.” The clean-up of Ogoniland was officially kicked off on the 3rd of June, 2016 by Prof. Osinbajo who represented President Buhari. The exercise is taking place in four local government areas of Eleme, Tai, Gokana, and Khana, where waters and lands had been despoiled by oil spills over the years. Ogoniland is a region of the Southeast in Rivers State Nigeria having over two million people who live in a 404-square-mile (1,050 km2) homeland. |

There's an agreement already between the FG and the SW governors. We await details. As for the "Amotekun is illegal folks" take a chill pill and watch Amotekun become operational. |

Highly impressed by this Buhari-led administration for this and I congratulate the people of Ogoni. At least, after some time they can go back to farming and fishing. |
