Politics / Gov Emmanuel Wins Big As Nerc Approves Electricity Distribution Licence For Akwa by ubox: 10:27am On Jan 21, 2023
The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) has approved the application from Ibom Utility company to operate an independent electricity distribution network licence which will enable Ibom Utility Company to distribute electricity in selected locations in Akwa Ibom state.

The announcement was made yesterday in Abuja after the approval presentation ceremony by NERC on Twitter.

The Akwa đť—śbom State Government delegation was led by the Secretary to State Government, Dr Emmanuel Ekuwem, Commissioner For Power, Hon John James and SSA to the Governor on Power, and The Managing Director of Ibom Power, Engr Mayen Etukudo

The Commission similarly approved the application for an amendment of the on-grid electricity generating licence to enable Ibom Power Company Ltd embed into the distribution network of Ibom utility company limited.

This development is a big win for Akwa Ibom State as Governor Udom Emmanuel at several fora had lamented the absence of steady power supply to be caused by poor distribution despite heavy investment by the state government in power.

The Governor hit the ground running when barely eighteen months into office, he inaugurated a newly built 33/11KV, 2 X 15MVA injection sub-station in Uyo, the state capital.

Thereafter, the Governor built a similar 33/11KV, 2 X 15MVA substation to provide dedicated grid power supply to the stateowned Victor Attah International Airport with a dedicated 33kv line from Ibom Tropicana.

In addition, when the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), energised 132/33KV electricity transformers in Calabar and Lagos, Governor Emmanuel collaborated with TCN to commission a 132/33KV, 1 x 60MVA transformer at Afaha Ube in Uyo. This 60MVA transformer increased the state’s available power for distribution from 96megawatts to 144megawatts.

According to the Governor’s aide on power, Engr. Meyen Etukudo, the upgraded substation provides steady power to ten local government areas in the state including Uyo, Ikot Ekpene, Essien Udim, Obot Akara, Ini, Ikono, Ibiono, Etinan, Abak and Ukanafun. TCN, the sole electricity transporter and link between generation companies and distribution companies in Nigeria, lauded the Governor for the partnership, which they said aligned with the incremental power policy of the Federal Government (FG).

Not done, Udom Emmanuel, again, collaborated with TCN and entered into an agreement to build a 132/33KV, 2 x 60MVA transmission substation at Ekim in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area. The last time a transmission substation was constructed in Akwa Ibom state was twenty years ago.

As part of activities to celebrate the state’s 32nd anniversary, the Governor invited Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo to commission Ekim 132/33KV, 1 x 60MVA substation. The substation, which receives power from the stateowned Ibom Power Plant, has 33kv dedicated lines to Onna industrial hub, the location of Jubilee Syringe factory, King Flour Mills, Metering Solutions Manufacturing Services and the plywood industry.

It also provides steady power supply to Akwa Ibom State University and five local government areas including Onna, Mkpat Enin, Ikot Abasi, Eastern Obolo and Orukanam. In addition, Akwa Ibom State Government has secured a 30MVA transformer for the proposed construction of the Ikot Abasi substation.

In spite of these investments in the last 7 years, some residents of the state decried the total blackout or epileptic power supply in their areas.

The outage was due to the privatisation of power distribution assets and Federal Government’s total control of power transmission, as Akwa Ibom State government did not have much say on the assets’ utilisation.

With this new approval, Akwa Ibom is set to independently manage its power resources and distribute them effectively.

Speed and affordablilty - FiberOne

Speed and data cap (Unlimited) - Fiber One

Speed and Coverage - Spectranet

I moved from Spectranet last year to FiberOne and it's by far the best decision I made.

Check for coverage at your location before your buy any plan.

Both have a good coverage around yaba and environs.
Surprised nobody mentioned this earlier. Fiber one is solid.

It's called Railway barrier or Level crossing barrier.
Naija leaders stupidity na your mate.

There are clearly marked crossing bridges and area along the entire track from Abuja to Kaduna. Upon approach to any of those, the trains usually slow down and gives warnings ahead.

As usual, our Nigerians create shortcuts which are illegal and dangerous to both themselves and train passengers and are unknown to the train driver.

If the train dare catches brake at these points , the lives of over 800 (passengers) people would be in great danger.

If she had survived, she would be promptly arrested for threat to live and related offenses.

Less than 150km road not completed in 13years? Is that too big a project for a so called oil-producing country?

You must be an APC supporter for this upside-down reasoning?

We produce more oil then Qatar but they complete 8 stadiums and other infrastructures within 10years

Shame
You produce more oil than Qatar but your population is almost 100 times theirs, so wrong analogy

Is it advisable to use these generators in such an enclosed place with no natural ventilation to cool off the heat? I'm not an engineering inclined person but I know big diesel generators with inbuilt noise cancellation boxes always have it open during operation. Kind of like it defeats the main purpose due to feasibility and sustainability anyway.
The big diesel generators I know(Milano) are always closed oh, tho they have vents at different points

If states can generate their electricity then we are moving forward.
Some states are already generating electricity like Akwa Ibom state has Ibom power plant, the problem has always been distribution because the constitution earlier stated that the power generated must be transfered to the national grid first instead of being distributed directly to the state that produced it...
