Phones / Beware Of Mtn 3g-it's A Fraud by vwvw(m): 6:00pm On Mar 11, 2009
MTN 3G USB internet modem is the latest attempt at fraud by a mobile telecom company-and they’re succeeding in landslide numbers in Africa’s biggest telecom market-Nigeria. The damn thing doesn’t work. In one month its USB internet modem’s speed has doddered around 10 to 15 kilobytes download speed-nowhere near its promise of 75-100 kb. The nightmare began mid last month when for two weeks the device stopped working-worse still my 1 month subscription had only just begun-so in pain I watched my money dribble down the unscrupulous telecom company’s drain, http://connectafrica./2009/03/09/mtns-fraudulent-internet-services/ embarassed embarassed embarassed

Foreign Affairs / Africans Unite Against President Bashir by vwvw(m): 8:15pm On Mar 04, 2009
angry angry angry ‘Africans unite…’ a popular tune from legendary Jamacian reggae maestro and revolutionary blared from speakers in a commercial bus in Lagos-Nigeria’s commercial hub. ‘We are the children of I-and-I…’ the song played on perhaps also in Khartoum and Tripoli

On the eve of the ICC sitting on whether a warrant should be issued for his arrest, Sudan’s president danced and told a large throng of his acolytes that the ICC could toss its planned indictment into the waste bin saying it wasn’t worth more than the ink it would be penned in. 2 hours after his indictment, President Bashir was still basking in the euphoric aura of a tin God, though the rhetoric had changed from I-don’t -care to the-west-hates-me. Isolated billowing smoke from several burning effigies of Mr. Luis Moreno Ocampo and any paraphernalia representing the West were complimented by vociferous shouts of “ we love you Bashir” from a huge crowd that had gathered in support of the indicted President, http://connectafrica./2009/03/04/africans-unite-against-president-bashir/

Foreign Affairs / Re: President Bashir Indicted For War Crimes by vwvw(m): 3:47pm On Mar 04, 2009
great decision especially since the AU and ECOWAS can't differentiate between the killer and the saint. forget about what Gaddaffi is saying the rest of Africa would gladly sit back and allow Bashir get the Charles taylor treatment. i wish to reiterate that the key to the end of the darfur crisis is what the ICC has done-get Bashir out of the way. Gaddaffi is one mad dog the continent can do without. Bashir is responsible for the senseless deaths of several thousand darfurians; the bulk stopped at his table 2 years ago for failing to provide cover for a dozen Nigerian peacekeepers who were bowdlerized at an outpost in Darfur by supporter of APC militia-a vicious rag tag group which is funded by Bashir. He is also responsible for funding renegade Joseph Kony just outside at the ugandan border. I suggest Bashir gets some lesson in Long-suffering something Muammar Gaddafi will all be too willing to dish out especially when he spent nearly 2 decades in economic and national limbo grin grin grin

@ desgiezd ; sorry dude this is a different kettle of fish-bashir is down and out
Foreign Affairs / President Bashir Indicted For War Crimes by vwvw(m): 2:51pm On Mar 04, 2009
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant for Sudanese president Omar Hassan al-Bashir on Wednesday for war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.

The decision against Bashir, the most senior figure pursued by the Hague-based court since it was set up in 2002, could spark more turmoil in Sudan and the surrounding region.

It could also hurt prospects for peace in Sudan and pit Western powers against backers of the Khartoum government.http://connectafrica./2009/03/04/president-bashir-indicted-for-war-crimes-in-darfur/

Politics / Why Zimbabwe Must Not Be Helped by vwvw(m): 4:44pm On Feb 25, 2009
However Zimbabwe doesn’t need either Nigeria or Africa’s help. In the 1970’s when pan Africanism was the elixir, the fiends were the British and the West; the continent’s freedom fighters trudged jungles, valleys and hills in a bid to oust the colonialists. Robert Mugabe unfortunately 29 years after his country’s independence is the bogeyman of his country’s political and economic woes. Succinctly spinning his home-made labyrinth, Mugabe in the guise of nationalism threw out white farmers, entrenched himself as life-president of the nation-maiming, detaining or killing his opponents, http://connectafrica./2009/02/25/why-zimbabwe-must-not-be-helped/
Foreign Affairs / Gaddafi Says Israel Is Behind Darfur Crisis by vwvw(m): 10:22am On Feb 25, 2009
Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, the current African Union president, on Tuesday accused “foreign forces” including Israel of being behind the Darfur conflict.

Judges from the International Criminal Court are due to announce on March 4 whether they will issue a warrant for the arrest of Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir over allegations that he masterminded genocide in Sudan’s Darfur region. U.N. diplomats have told Reuters the warrant will be issued.

But Gaddafi, addressing a meeting on ways to expand cooperation between the United Nations and African Union, urged the Court to stop its proceedings against Bashir:

“Why do we have to hold President Bashir or the Sudanese government responsible when the Darfur problem was caused by outside parties, and Tel Aviv (Israel), for example, is behind the Darfur crisis?” http://connectafrica./2009/02/25/gaddafi-says-israel-is-behind-the-darfur-crisis/

In Akure there is huge security presence; stern looking mobile policemen have been stationed around prominent government buildings around oba ile, Ijapo, Oyemekun and the commercial district of oja oba.  most shops are closed and there's limited movement-almost a ghost town. but there is a big sense of relief and muted joy in Akure-which is a strong hold of mimiko

Politics / Maurice Iwus 10 Green Bottles by vwvw(m): 5:35pm On Feb 19, 2009
However Professor Maurice Iwu, Professor of Pharmacology rings like a classic schizophrenic to Nigeria’s opposition parties; he caused a furore when he remarked that the American elections were not as organized as Nigeria’s advising that the Yankees could borrow a leaf from us. Three months from now INEC will begin plans for the 2011 general elections; incredible when you realise that incompetent elections conducted three years ago would ensure that nearly than one third of 36 states will have separate election dates beginning from 2011, The recent cancellation of the Ekiti state Governorship elections in 10 local government’s out of 18 is one more pointer on how the national electoral body has found it easier to conduct flawed elections than credible ones. For the INEC chairman, two years after the elections, it has been a facsimile of the popular nursery rhyme of ‘10 green bottles standing on the wall’. Several states have more than accidentally falling down and billions of Naira are being allocated in the conduct of election Re-runs, http://connectafrica./2009/02/19/maurice-iwus-ten-green-bottles/

Foreign Affairs / Nigeria's International Terrorists by vwvw(m): 6:23pm On Feb 18, 2009
Despite last year’s handover of the Bakassi Peninsular to Cameroun by The Hague following a long drawn-out legal battle, the last10 months have witnessed an endless cat and mouse chase in the peninsular between the militants and gendarmes. The media is rife with stories of nightfall and pre-dawn attacks by both parties on hapless civilian border communities; with both sides trading blame. However Nigeria and Cameroun have for decades been at daggers drawn; almost as far back as when Ijaw fishermen began their sojourn in search of the Golden Fleece in Malabo. The bulk this time however undoubtedly stops on the Nigerian side; its porous waterway security has not only been breached by oil pirates and buccaneers but ominously now by international terrorists reared on home turf, http://connectafrica./2009/02/18/nigerias-international-terrorists/
Foreign Affairs / Tanzanian Teachers Flogged For Late-coming by vwvw(m): 4:55pm On Feb 17, 2009
shocked At first I assumed he was joking, I told myself it could not be possible. “I have been able to teach since this happened.” Once they locked the door of the staffroom and made everyone line up to receive their strokes, I knew that they meant business. Seven of my female colleagues took strokes of the cane in the palms of their hands, when it was my turn, a police officer ordered me to lie down and receive my punishment. I refused, so he kicked me and I fell down… he hit me everywhere… when it was over, I went to the hospital for treatment. I was given medicine but I still have a lot of pain in my chest…
He continued ‘My pupils did not see me take the beating but they know about it… I am married with 4 children. My wife is also a teacher at a different school, she is furious that they have done this to me.’, http://connectafrica./2009/02/17/spare-the-rod-spoil-the-teacher/
