Politics / Rescheduled Polls: Obaseki Assures Of Adequate Security, Releases Emergency Resp by welosa(m): 4:54pm On Feb 21, 2019
*Rescheduled polls: Obaseki assures of adequate security, releases emergency response center numbers*

*_…urges support for APC candidates_*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has assured voters in the state of adequate security to ensure peaceful conduct of the rescheduled general elections, calling on the people to come out en masse to exercise their franchise to deepen democracy in the country.

Obaseki gave the assurance in a state-wide broadcast on Thursday, stressing that the state was committed to working with the relevant stakeholders to ensure that the election is free, fair, transparent and credible.

He said, “as we know, election is the most significant ingredient of democracy and a major instrument for recruiting political leadership in democratic societies like ours. Participating in the democratic process enables the citizenry (the electorates) to freely determine who should lead them at every level of government periodically and take decisions that shape their socio-economic and political destiny; and if elected officers falter, the electorates still possess the power to recall them or vote them out in the next election.”

Noting the state government’s resolve to contribute to deepening democratic governance in the country, the governor explained, “The issue of security will be key to the success of this election, therefore any threat to peace will be taken seriously and dealt with properly. I want to assure you all that adequate security arrangements have been put in place to prevent breakdown of law and order and guarantee free and fair elections in Edo State.

“Any incidents of violence should be reported to the National Crisis Centre on telephone number: 196 or the Edo Election Crises Centre on telephone numbers: 08077773721 and 07033940263.”

He cautioned Edo residents to refrain from public statements, pronouncements, speeches and hateful conduct capable of causing violence during and after the elections, adding, “Violence-free incidents at the polling units will encourage more people to come out and vote. This will boost the dwindling ratio of voters’ turn-out in recent years in Edo State and also contribute to nurturing and the consolidation of democratic governance in Nigeria which future generations would be proud of.”

While urging support for candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Obaseki said, “2019 General Election is a crucial election to Edo people. Since I assumed office on the 12th of November 2016, all my actions, policies and programmes have been based on the agenda and manifesto of my party - the APC.

“And as I stated in my New Year Message, our success as a government has been largely based on the support from President Muhammadu Buhari. With the assistance and intervention of President Buhari, we have been able to pay the salaries of all workers in Edo State as and when due. Pension payments due to state and local government retirees are now regular, and we are clearing the backlog of pension and gratuity arrears of all workers.”

On the president’s support, he said, “President Buhari has supported and encouraged our Education reforms particularly the revamp of our technical colleges and EDOBEST, which is becoming a reference for educational transformation globally. My job creation efforts have been boosted by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s N-Power initiative which has contributed over 12000 graduate jobs to the 80,000 jobs we have been able to create in the last two years mostly for young people.

“Over 30,000 Edo citizens have benefited from the Federal Government's social intervention programmes such as Trader-moni, market-moni. With the active support of Mr. President we are currently processing applications for federal government incentives such as export processing zone licence for the Benin Industrial park which by the grace of God will receive its first tenants early next year. This is happening at the same time as we are awaiting the Federal Government to guarantee the credit facility to develop the Benin River Port.”

Noting that the major industrialisation projects by his government are driven by the President’s support, he said, “I am very optimistic that President Buhari will grant us the required approvals which we need to break the monopoly of BEDC so that Edo people can enjoy constant supply of electricity just as he did when he gave us the approvals to build the 450MW Azura plant in Ihovbor. I have gone into great lengths to highlight how much we have benefited as a state from having an APC government in Abuja which has supported our government fully. If we are able to complement the support which we currently enjoy at the Federal level with competent legislators from my party, who are committed to the Edo Agenda, I am confident that I will be able to fulfill and perhaps exceed my promises to you.”

Calling on the people to vote for APC candidates in the elections, he said, “I am therefore using the opportunity of this broadcast to solicit your support and the goodwill of all well-meaning Edo citizens to sustain the current development efforts of my government by voting all the candidates of APC. They all have a history of patriotic service. Your vote for my party APC and our candidates will guarantee that I can complete all my ongoing projects and reposition Edo State as a major state where it rightly belongs.”

Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, has expressed shock at the news of the passing of Osaretin Igbinedion, son of Chief Lucky Nosakhare Igbinedion, former governor of Edo State and a family member, Eseosa Oyemwense.

In a statement issued in Benin City by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Crusoe Osagie, Obaseki said: "I commiserate with Chief Lucky Igbinedion and his wife, Mrs Eki Igbinedion and the entire Igbinedion family over the passing of Osaretin and Eseosa Oyemwense."

Obaseki added: "There are no adequate words to describe the deep sense of loss associated with the untimely passing of one's child, irrespective of his age.

“I join friends and well-wishers of the Igbinedion family in prayers for the repose of the souls of the departed and urge the family to take solace in the assurance that we will meet again on the day of resurrection.”

*Lets Go Further with Governor Godwin Obaseki*

By Comrade Wellington E. Osadolor

The year 2016 birthed a new governor in Edo state in the person of Mr Godwin Nogheghase obaseki. He came with a lot of fresh breath in the area of Industrialization, Agricultural rejuvenation, Civil Service reform, Infrastructural Development, Human Capacity Development, among others.

Within 48hours he assumed office as Governor, Obaseki swung into action by attending to files and visiting various Ministries to have a first hand information of the activities and the area that needed reform. Little wonder therefore why Mr Governor was nicknamed “Wake and see” because of his prompt action to issues especially road rehabilitation, scrapping of CDA and removing Agberoes from our roads.
Going forward, the usual nuisances faced by land developers in Edo state was put to an end, and the so called Community Development Associations outlawed; reform in Edo State Civil Service, ongoing construction of the first ever Industrial Park at Ikpoba Okha, Benin River Sea Port at Gele-Gele (approved by president Buhari), completion of Azura Power Plant, ongoing construction of optic fibre for easy internet connection in the metropolis, ongoing plans to generate power by TCN through the initiative of Edo state Govt to put an end to the darkness BEDC has brought to Edo state. When this is completed, power problem will become a thing of the past in Edo State.

Other things the Edo state government ably led by Governor Godwin Obaseki is doing include the contruction of Arougba-Ulemo-Ogbasagbo road. The Benin Abraca road has be awarded and other major road construction ongoing in the three Senatorial Districts. The reform in Primary Educational sector has been adjudged to be the best reform in Nigeria in recent time. More than 5,000 teachers have been trained on how to use digital facility to teach our children and they were also given iPad and other necessary facilities to enhance their teaching. EDO TEACHERS HAVE GONE DIGITAL!!!

Benin Airport is becoming one of the busiest in South South Nigeria because of the tripping of foreign investors from different part of the world to Edo state. The table have been set, food is already in the kitchen and the caterers are ready! Should we change the caterers that have already set the table to present the food? The answer is definitely NO!

The ongoing infrastructural development and great reforms in Edo state will ONLY continue if we allow the All Progressives Congress at the centre to continue and for us to continuosly gain easy access to the Federal Government and get more attention from the Legislature. We also need to get those that will work with our Alaghodaro Governor to the House of Representatives and Senate. Mr Governor needs somebody that will push Edo interest in Senate and Federal House of Representatives hence we are asking all Edo sons and daughters, and by extension all eligible voters in Edo state to show their support for Mr Governor by voting all the APC Candidates come February 16.

A vote for APC is a vote for Mr Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki and by extension, a Vote for Progress.

Lets Go Further Together With Governor Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki!!!

*Obaseki’s industrialisation drive receives fresh impetus from China’s Belt, Road Initiative*

*_…Benin Industrial Park, Benin River Port, others top China's list of projects_*

Efforts by the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, to turn the state into a hub of industrial activities have received further assurance of the Chinese government, with the roll out of the implementation of the Chinese Government’s Belt and Road Initiative in Nigeria.

This hint was given by Chinese officials at the Forum on the Belt and Road Initiative and Production Capacity Cooperation between China and Nigeria, held in Lagos on Sunday, to mark the Chinese New Year.

Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, was a Special Guest at the Chinese Consulate in Nigeria to mark the celebration and also streamline plans in the realisation of the Asian country’s Belt and Road Initiative in Nigeria.

The event was attended by top members of the Chinese Government’s delegation to Nigeria as well as top functionaries from the Edo State Government, among others.

Governor Obaseki has had a robust partnership with the Chinese Government, which crystallised in the attraction of big-ticket projects from China to Edo State as well as the handling of these projects by reputable Chinese companies.

The projects include the Benin Industrial Park and Free Trade Zone as well as the construction of the Benin River Port, which is to be handled by China Harbour Engineering Company Limited (CHEC).

The 1000bpd Benin Modular Refinery is also to be built by a Chinese consortium, which includes Peiyang Chemical Company Limited (PCC), SINOPEC and others.

According to the governor, the Edo State Government is deeply connected with the Belt and Road Initiative and is happy that the initiative will be implemented from 2019.

He said the state government is excited about the prospects and has made initial commitment for some of the projects she is developing in partnership with Chinese partners to ensure their quick realisation.

A consulate official commended the governor and the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Zhou Pingjian, for gracing the event, noting that the initiative is being implemented after President Muhammadu Buhari met with Chinese President, Xi Jinping in Beijing, to agree on stronger ties between both countries.

According to him, “2019 is the first year of the implementation of the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation. The Summit, according to the official, “launches eight major initiatives including industrial promotion, infrastructure connectivity, trade facilitation, green development, capacity building, healthcare, people-to-people exchange and peace and security.”

*…Obaseki reveals how PDP’s demand for $20 million bribe almost scuttled Edo-Azura Power Project*

President Muhammadu Buhari has assured that he will continue to work for the interest of ordinary Nigerians, urging them to vote for him in the presidential elections on February 16, so he can continue to deliver on the pledge to fight corruption, revitalize the economy and improve security, which are the cardinal policy thrusts of his administration.

The President said this at the All Progressives Congress (APC) Presidential Campaign Rally in Edo State, which held at Garrick Memorial School, in Ekehuan Road, Benin City, the state capital.

He assured that he will get the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to make public how much money has been recovered and what government intends to do with it.

“We are doing our best in fighting corruption. I assure you that very soon, I will instruct the EFCC and the ICPC to address a joint press conference to tell Nigerians what has been recovered and what we will do with the recovered funds,” he said.

The President was accompanied to the venue of the rally by Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki; National Chairman of the APC, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole; Lagos State Governor, Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode; Minister of Transport, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi; Minister of State for Health, Dr. Osagie Ehanire and other party leaders across the nation.

Buhari said he is in the state to remind Edo people of the fundamental promises made in 2015, relaying what his administration has achieved in the areas of security, agriculture and the fight against corruption.

“We have made the North-East safer than we met it. We have given soft loans to farmers to enable the nation to attain food security. We have saved a lot of money in dollars by not importing.

“Please vote APC from top to bottom for the party to occupy the States’ Houses of Assembly; National Assembly and the Presidency," he urged.

Governor Obaseki said that the progress being recorded in the state was made possible by the President’s support.

He said, “In Edo, when you see a masquerade dancing very well, you must know that somebody is beating the drum that is making it dance. Are we dancing well in Edo? Is your governor doing well? Are we paying salaries? Are we paying pensions? Are we training our teachers?

“Are we building our industrial park? Are we going to build a River Port? The drummer who is making all of these happen is here today. He is our president, President Muhammadu Buhari. There is nothing I could have done in the last two years without President Buhari,” he added.

Noting that the President came to the rescue of the state when the previous government almost scuttled the plan to build the Edo-Azura Power Plant, he said, “The president has done what we expected him to do. He has given us direction. I said to him, remember when you resumed office, within 60 days, former Governor Oshiomhole came to you and said you should help us with Azura Power Plant. He asked the President to give us a letter so that we can raise money to build that power Plant. The people before them refused to give us that letter. They were demanding for $20 million bribe, which we did not have.”

National Chairman of APC, Comrade Oshiomhole commended the President on his support for the state and the governor, noting that the president’s efforts helped in paying off debts incurred by the previous administration.

Hailing the President for his social investment programmes, he said “There are things that you have done that has shown where your heart is. Your constituency is the masses, which is why you created the social investment programme, which includes the Home-Grown School Feeding Programme, Conditional Cash Transfer, N-Power and MarketMoni.”

He said he was proud of Governor Obaseki for improving on what was done in his time as a governor, noting that the governor has added value to governance.

Earlier, Governor Obaseki led other members of the State’s Executive Council in receiving the President at the Benin Airport, at 3.05pm. The President was on board the presidential aircraft marked 5N-FGN.

After arriving the Airport, the President was driven to the Palace of the Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo, Oba Ewuare II, where he went to pay homage to the revered monarch.

In anticipation of the President’s arrival, a mammoth crowd had besieged the Benin Airport by noon on Thursday, to receive the President for the state’s leg of his re-election campaign.

Members of the ruling APC from different parts of the state as well as the party’s supporters were colourfully dressed to receive the country’s number one citizen at the Airport.

Chairman, Buhari Supporters Organization, Arewa Chapter, Edo State, Abdullah Baba, said the president’s visit to the state is a welcome development.

Baba said the organization was at the Airport to receive him because of his developmental strides across the country.

*Abuja meeting over Justice Onnoghen was a PDP Governors’ Meeting*

The Abuja meeting of governors of Delta, Rivers, Cross River, Akwa Ibom and Bayelsa states, on the corruption trial of the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Walter Onnoghen, was a meeting of governors of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and not a meeting of South-South governors.

Chairman of the Edo State chapter of the PDP, Chief Dan Orbih is economical with the truth and most uncharitable to the personality of Governor Godwin Obaseki of Edo State, with his unnecessary attacks on the Edo State Governor.

Chief Orbih should tell Edo people the last time the South-South Governors’ meeting was held, how many times the meeting was held in 2018 and its agenda for 2019.

Governor Obaseki is committed to the wellbeing of Edo people and our brothers and sisters in our sister South-South states and all Nigerians, and will support any meeting, devoid of political colouration, that genuinely seeks to improve the welfare of people of the south-south region and elsewhere in the country.

Obaseki will not attend a PDP Governors’ meeting like the one held in Abuja last Sunday, but will attend meetings that are not politically-tainted, and called to proffer time-tested solutions to the developmental challenges faced by the millions of Edo and other people of the south-south region.

Politics / *A Stranded Edo PDP And The Resort To Falsehood As Campaign Strategy* by welosa(m): 9:12pm On Jan 13, 2019
*A stranded Edo PDP and the resort to falsehood as campaign strategy*

The Dan Orbih-led campaign train of the failed Edo People's Democratic Party (PDP) has resorted to falsehood, the latest being a non-existing N7billion travel allowance in the 2019 Budget of Edo State.

The Edo State 2019 Budget is a public document and there is no such provision from page one to the last, of the document.

To sink so low and input items that do not exist into a public document, amounts to crossing the line.

With Governor Obaseki's achievements in the last two years, Edo people can tell who 'ate their yams' and who is frugally applying our resources on impactful projects such as road infrastructure, health centres, the education of our children and the security of our people and our property, to mention only a few.

Our latest proof of superior management ability is the promotion of Bendel Insurance to the elite soccer league in Nigeria, an achievement that all Edo sons and daughters, irrespective of their political convictions have hailed the Obaseki administration for.

Just like in soccer, everything the Edo PDP ruined, Obaseki is, with his midas touch bringing back to life.

We understand the frustration in trying to sell a party notorious for looting public funds, but telling lies and propagating falsehoods at campaign grounds will not help the difficult position that the Edo PDP has put itself.

The eight years of PDP leadership in Edo remain our dark ages, and all Edo people know that so well. No lies by Dan Orbi and his co-travellers can change that because Edo people are too intelligent to be swayed so cheaply.

Obaseki is retelling our developmental story as a state with roads that are springing up daily, everywhere in the three senatorial districts, health centres, job creation and empowerment opportunities, improved education etc.

Politics / Obaseki Gives BEDC 7-day Ultimatum To Restore Power Or Risk Shutdown Of Benin Of by welosa(m): 2:48pm On Jan 11, 2019
*Obaseki gives BEDC 7-day ultimatum to restore power or risk shutdown of Benin offices*

*… GSTC set to reopen in September with 1,500 students*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has asked the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to restore power supply to consumers in the state or risk shutdown of its offices in the state.

The governor gave the ultimatum as he concluded the ward-to-ward campaign in Egor Local Government Area, where he urged voters in the area to support candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2019 general elections.

At Ward 9, the governor said N500 million has been set aside in the 2019 budget to construct an entertainment park and waterworks, urging residents in the ward to support APC candidates to represent them at the state and federal levels.

He said: “We have awarded the contracts for the repair of the failed portions of Okhoro Road and the contractor who went on holiday has resumed work with the promise to start work next week.”

The governor decried how the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has continued to frustrate his efforts to ensure the people of the state get stable electricity to power their businesses, noting, “BEDC has continued to put us in darkness in the state and we will give them seven days to restore electricity or else we will shut their office down in the state.”

He described Ward 10 as a special ward that has several federal and state institutions, and said that his administration has completed the design of Technical College Road and the contract awarded.

“I have also asked the contractor to rehabilitate Adolor College Road and in two weeks’ time, contractors will commence work,” he assured.

The governor noted that the rehabilitation work on Adolor College Road has become important because over N300 million has been spent so far in revamping the Government Science Technical College (GSTC) which will be reopened for academic activities in September 2019 with 1,500 students.

“Due to the work we are doing at the College, the Minister of Power has promised to give us a direct line from Ihovbor Power Plant to help light up the state. Officials of Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) are already in the state preparing the ground to bring power and to enable the people enjoy 24/7 electricity,” he added.

At Ward 6, he assured the electorates that the contractor handling the Textile Mill Road project is set to return to site.

“In the next few weeks, work will commence on the road; the contractor will come to site. I am here to tell you that this year’s election will be different. We want to do it unit-by-unit because votes are cast at the unit level.

At Ward 8, Obaseki urged the youths to take advantage of their proximity to the GSTC, enrol for programmes in the school and learn technical skills, which will equip them to become self-reliant.

In continuation of his ward-to-ward campaign, Edo State Governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, was in Egor Local Government Area of the state on Wednesday, where he canvassed for votes for candidates of All Progressives Congress (APC) in the forthcoming general elections.

Obaseki explained that a vote for President Muhammadu Buhari is a vote for him and would translate to better life for Edo people and residents.

"This election is about APC and President Muhammadu Buhari, as a victory for the President is a victory for Obaseki and it will enable us continue our developmental projects in the state to make life better for Edo people," he told the voters.

At Ward 3, the governor commended the party faithful for their loyalty and urged them to do more by winning the hearts of more people using the achievements of the APC-led government in the state.

"This ward is a performing ward. You voted en-mass for APC during the last election and we want you to double your performance in this year's election by winning more hearts that would vote for the APC" the governor said, and assured that his administration will in five weeks' time, develop the design and award contract for the reconstruction of Power Line Road in Uwelu area of the state.

He introduced the party’s candidates for Egor/Ikpoba-Okha House of Representatives seat,
Hon. Ehiozuwa Johnson Agbonayinma; Edo South Senatorial seat, Hon Patrick Obahiagbon; and Hon. Crosby Eribo, who is seeking a seat in the Edo State House of Assembly.

He promised to reward the best performing ward in Edo South Senatorial District and emphasised that massive support by the electorates in all the units will enable his administration sustain the ongoing human and infrastructural development in the state.

The three APC candidates; Hon. Agbonayinma, Eribo and Obahiagbon promised to join hands with the governor to attract more projects to the state and pass bills to support the governor’s developmental strides, when elected.

Politics / *lassa Fever: ISTH, Edo Govt Boost Capacity To Contain Viral Disease* by welosa(m): 2:26pm On Jan 10, 2019
*Lassa Fever: ISTH, Edo govt boost capacity to contain viral disease*

Although no case of Lassa Fever has been reported in the state in 2019, Edo State Government and the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH), have reaffirmed their resolve to ensure that there is no resurgence of the viral disease in the state.

The state government has stepped up awareness campaign to guard against a resurgence of the ailment in the state since reports that the viral disease has resurfaced in some states across the country.

In a statement, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said that the state government has shown commitment in managing the ailment in the state by equipping the ISTH with two dialysis machines, one x-ray machine, a ventilator and Personal Protective Equipment (PPEs), which were procured at the height of the Lassa Fever outbreak last year.

According to the governor’s aide, “We are committed to ensuring that we do not record a resurgence of Lassa Fever in the state this year and are ready to provide even more support along the way. This is why we have intensified campaign on preventive measures and calling out to the relevant stakeholders to contribute their quota.

“As a state government, we have been a huge part of the campaign to keep Lassa Fever at bay in the state by supporting the Institute of Lassa Control and Research domiciled at ISTH. Last year, we provided support in form of equipment and PPEs, and refurbished the water system at the hospital so they can be better prepared to respond to emergencies from Lassa Fever.

“The government is ready to even do more and provide the much-needed support to the hospital to ensure that there is no resurgence of the viral disease in the state.”

He added that the state government is revamping about 20 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across the state, in the pilot phase of the Edo Healthcare Improvement (Edo-HIP), which is a comprehensive healthcare programme to reposition primary healthcare delivery across the 18 local government areas in the state.

*Plan to end darkness in Edo: CCETC-Ossiomo 55MW transmission equipment sails out of China*

*…As work progresses on site*

Barely a week after Edo State Governor, Mr  Godwin Obaseki visited the site that will host the 55 Megawatts CCETC-Ossiomo Power plant in Ologbo, near Benin City, the governor on Wednesday said that transmission equipment; transformers, cables, supply lines amongst others, have sailed out of China, heading to Edo State.

According to Obaseki, “the latest information made available to me by those tracking the movement of the equipment from China, said the transmission cables, transformers and other supply infrastructure have sailed out of China and heading to Nigeria.

“I have also been told that work is being fast-tracked on the 55-Megawatt power plant, which is coming from Saudi Arabia, to be positioned for sail out.”

The governor explained that “the current cycle of darkness foisted on electricity consumers in Edo State by the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) is killing businesses and ruining social activities,” assuring that a new era is in the horizon with his administration’s bold initiatives.

He further said the April date for the commissioning of the first phase (5 Megawatts) of the project is realistic as the project partners are intensifying work on site.

Recall that after a tour of the site last week, Obaseki told journalists that “We believe that before the end of the first quarter of the year, the first 5MW would be delivered to light up government offices and streets within the Sapele Road corridor of Benin City.”

He explained that “to ease distribution of the power, a substation would be set up around Kings Square, which would power streets in the city.”

The governor added: “We are concluding transaction to light up 200 Kilometres of our streets across the city. When the plant is completed, it will free up some electricity for the state. We believe that if the megawatts produced increase, the distribution company will have more power to distribute to other cities in the state.

“The ordinary Edo people will benefit from this power arrangement because there is an arrangement to drop power in certain processing centres where artisans can move into and do their businesses with the assurance of steady power supply.”

*Lassa Fever: Obaseki tasks local councils on sanitation, as Irrua Specialist Hospital assists in new diagnostic tech breakthrough*

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has charged chairmen of local government areas in the state to intensify the campaign on environmental sanitation and other efforts geared at mitigating resurgence of Lassa Fever in the state.

Obaseki gave the charge in Benin City, as a team of scientists working with staff of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, have made a breakthrough with a “rapid portable genomic sequencing technology to identify viruses without prior knowledge of the cause of the disease.”

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, the governor said that the state government has already rolled out a campaign to sensitise the public on how to prevent the spread of Lassa Fever.

He said that the state government has mobilised relevant health agencies and is working closely with a delegation of the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), to reduce the chances of a resurgence of the ailment.

According to him, “It is no news that we are susceptible to Lassa Fever in some parts of the state, due to a number of factors. The risk of resurgence in Nigeria is high in the dry season, as people engage in bush burning.

“However, the Edo state government has commenced an elaborate sensitisation campaign to ensure that the people are better informed on what can cause or spread Lassa Fever this season. We are aware of the resurgence in other states and are committed to stamp out the disease from our state.

“This is why the governor is calling on the chairmen of local government areas, who are closest to the people to ensure that this message gets to our people everywhere. They are to mobilise information units in their areas to take the message of how to prevent the disease to remote parts of the state.”

Meanwhile, a team of scientists working with staff of Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, have made a breakthrough with a “rapid portable genomic sequencing technology to identify viruses without prior knowledge of the cause of the disease.”

The research led by scientists from Public Health England (UK), the Bernhard Nocht Institute of Tropical Medicine, Germany, in collaboration with the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC) and the World Health Organisation (WHO), has been described as a major breakthrough in Lassa Fever diagnosis.

The breakthrough is contained in a report published in the journal, Science. The research was conducted during the 2018 Lassa Fever epidemic in Nigeria.

The Chief Medical Director of ISTH, Prof. Sylvanus Okogbeni, was quoted as saying “The result of the sequencing reassured managing Clinicians in ISTH, the main centre for the diagnosis and treatment of Lassa Fever in Nigeria.

“I would like to congratulate the team for the feat. The institution is very willing to collaborate further to ensure that on-site sequencing is a regular feature of its Institute of Lassa Fever Research and Control.”

*Obaseki moves against BEDC-induced darkness in Edo with Ossiomo-CCETC 55MW Power project*

*_…phase 1 to be commissioned in April_*

In a bold move to free Edo people and residents from the stranglehold of the inefficient Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) and undo the endless cycle of darkness foisted on electricity consumers in the state, Governor Godwin Obaseki on Wednesday, visited the 55 Megawatts CCETC-Ossiomo Power plant as the facility prepares to commence operation.

Addressing journalists after inspecting facilities and progress of work at the CCETC Clean Power/Ossiomo Power Plant, in Ologbo, near Benin City, Obaseki said the first phase of the project will be commissioned in April and would make more electricity available for distribution in the state.

He said the construction of transmission lines to deliver the power from the site to the city centre would soon commence, as the first set of equipment for the project would arrive from China in the first quarter of this year.

According to him, “We believe that before the end of the first quarter of the year, the first 5MW would be delivered to light up government offices and streets within the Sapele Road corridor of Benin City.”

"The ordinary Edo people will benefit from this power arrangement because there is an arrangement to drop power in certain processing centres where artisans can move into and do their businesses with the assurance of steady power supply.”

Director, CCETC Clean Energy/Ossiomo Power Plant, Dr. Uwa Igiehon, said the power plant is a joint venture between a Chinese Company, CCETC Clean Energy and Ossiomo Power to build a 55Megawatts plant in the state.

He said the power plant started in August 2018 and would be delivered in the next four to five months.

“We will be using natural gas from a 50-metre gas pipeline close to the site. The project will be in phases with the first phase of 5 megawatts to be delivered to the state government.”

The governor was also at the 1800-housing unit Emotan Gardens on Upper Sokponba Road, to see the extent of work at the estate.

The Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, has approved the contract for the refurbishment of 230 primary schools across the state, to provide for conducive learning environment for pupils in the schools.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, said this in Benin City, the state capital on Wednesday.

He noted that the state government is committed to making learning pleasurable for pupils in the state, adding that the review of a list of another 230 primary schools is in progress, after which contracts for their refurbishment will be awarded.

According to him, “The governor has approved the contract for the renovation of 230 primary schools in the state. This is in furtherance of his commitment to ensuring that students in the state learn in a conducive environment.

“It is also coming as the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) is set to roll out the Edo Basic Education Sector Transformation (Edo-BEST) in more schools across the state.

“With the award, contractors are expected to be on site working on the schools. As that is ongoing, we are also in the process of compiling another batch of 230 public primary schools for which contracts would be awarded in the first quarter of 2019. This will bring the number of schools marked for renovation to 460.”

He said that an audit of another 800 schools is also ongoing, after which schools found to be in need of renovation would be added to the 460, noting that the state government is not going to leave any school behind in the rollout of the renovation programme.

“We are committed to ensuring that the schools in Edo State are in good shape. We have had to take our time to do this because we wanted the School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) to be in place so they can play a critical role in ensuring that the schools are well run and that whatever is provided for the schools are not vandalised,” he said.

According to Obaseki “the award of the contract is in fulfilment of my promise to reconstruct Benin-Abraka Road and bring to an end, the frustration and sufferings of Edo people that ply the road, daily. This project is the largest, longest and the most ambitious road project ever undertaken in Edo State.

“The road has been dilapidated for over forty years and what is worthy of note is our ingenuity in bringing stakeholders together to appreciate the need to execute this road project that affects the lives of well over a million people, through co-financing.

He explained that the 105.6-kilometer Benin-Abraka Road has spurs to Aifuwa Street; Evboesi-Urherhue and Iguelaba communities.

Special Adviser to the governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, said the state government has undertaken to provide trucks that will be sent to farmers in villages and peri-urban areas, to convey farm produce to venue of the Food and Agric Fair, Imaguero College, in Benin City.

"The farmers will not pay for the transportation of their produce to the fair, the transportation burden will be borne by the state government. With this and other incentives, we are certain that the costs of food items will reduce significantly at the fair," Osagie said.

"We are urging Edo people and residents in the state to take advantage of the fair as there will be free drinks and free indomie meals for children.

"The price of a bag of rice will begin from N15,000 and the price of a big cow will begin from N150,000 while tomatoes, tubers of yam, plantain and other foodstuffs will be sold at affordable prices," the governor's aide added.

Madam Eseosa Igbinidu, a civil servant who resides in Benin City, said she is waiting for the fair to open to shoppers.

"We are aware of the Food and Agric Fair and the timing is also right because we have been paid our November salary. We want to spend our salary wisely and give our families the best treatment in the Yuletide," she said.

Other residents interviewed, expressed delight at the initiative and commended governor Obaseki for always seeking ways to make life easier for the common man.

"We commend the governor for always seeking ways to reduce the impact of the struggling national economy on Edo people. The idea of a food and agric fair is brilliant and it will be a win-win for farmers who have challenges transporting their produce to the market and consumers, who want more value for their money," Mr Ugbo Sunday said.

The state government earlier in the week announced that arrangements were on top gear to ensure residents have memorable Christmas celebration with the hosting of the first Food and Agric Fair with the intention to slash prices of foodstuff.

State Commissioner for Wealth Creation, Cooperative and Employment, Emmanuel Usoh, who disclosed this at a press briefing said the fair would show case food produced in the state and also sell same to Edo people at low prices during this Yuletide season.

He said a day would be set aside for farmers and players in the agro allied industries to meet and exchange ideas on the best practices globally, adding that the fair would attend to challenges facing small scale farmers and showcase opportunities in the agric industry, including funding capacities of development banks and partners.

He said; "Products ranging from rice, vegetable oil, onions and all sorts of farm produce will be sold at promotional prices. Poultry products would also be available. There will be a mobile abattoir. Frozen chicken will be available for sale.

"There will be a stand for local cuisine. Beverage companies have indicated interest to participate in the fair. Father Christmas will be there for the children to visit. The children will get free drinks and free food from Dufil foods. Commissioners are to be dressed in Father's Christmas costumes.

"There will be subsidy for farmers to transport their farm produce to the venue. Farmers in the northern part of the state producing onions have agreed to sell at very low prices."

He expressed pleasure with the commencement of open distance learning programme, the skills acquisition training for residents and members of the host community as well as the proposed Microsoft Academic Centre within the campus.

He said arrangements would be put in place to get EdoJobs and other skills acquisition training programmes take place in the school, adding, "We have been having discussions with the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development and the Edo Geographic Information Service (EDOGIS) agency to work out an arrangement with you where the bulk of staff to be hired by both establishments will be trained in this school."

Earlier, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Professor Falodun said a total of 6,563 graduands from the 2004/05 to 2017/18 sessions, would get their certificates during the ceremony.

He highlighted achievements recorded under his administration in less than six months to include capacity building for staff in research writing, award of five indigenes with scholarships, renovation of the school's healthcare centre, male and female hostels, Engineering block, establishment of a water factory, among others.

One of the graduands, Mr. Ernest Akpan expressed appreciation to the governor for gracing the occasion, noting that with the convocation ceremony he would be able to obtain his certificate and apply for scholarship programme abroad.

Akpan said, "I had applied abroad but was denied because they required the original certificate not just statement of result. This first convocation is a turn-around for our school, Edo Polytechnic, Usen."

Other dignitaries at the event included Commissioner for Education, Hon. Emmanuel Agbale, Elawure of Usen, His Royal Highness, Olu-Ogbe II, representatives of Vice Chancellors of Igbenedion University, Okada; Edo University, Iyamho; University of Benin, Benson Idahosa University and traditional chiefs.

*Yellow Fever: Edo Govt adopts multi-agency response, urges residents to embrace* *vaccination, sanitation*

The Edo State Government has urged residents in the state to take advantage of the state's vaccination drive against Yellow Fever disease, assuring of a multi-agency response, in collaboration with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the Nigeria Center for Disease Control (NCDC).

In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr. Crusoe Osagie, the state government said that nine cases have been reported in Ekpoma, Ehor and Igieduma towns, assuring that the government is on top of the situation.

He explained that a combined team of experts drawn from WHO and CDC are working with the Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital (ISTH) and the Edo State Epidemiology Team, to contain the outbreak.

Osagie said that an Emergency Response Protocol is being finalised to ensure similar epidemic or pandemics are contained in future.

Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Primary Health Care, Dr. Aanu Fakunle, said that Primary Health Care Centers (PHC) across the state are being repositioned to be the first responders for these kinds of outbreaks.

She emphasised that it was important for parents and children to get vaccinated as that was one of the ways to prevent the ailment

"Other measures include good sanitation as the virus is spread by mosquitoes. So, we encourage people to keep their environment clean by cutting the bushes, draining our gutters, wash their hands and maintain good hygiene."

She said some symptoms of the virus include, "fever, chills, muscle ache, nose bleeds, diarrhoea among others, before complications set in. Blood samples are then sent to a WHO reference laboratory for confirmation after initial suspicion.

According to her, "We have embarked on capacity building of the PHC staff and expect they are able to identify, manage such cases and refer appropriately. Several PHCs are captured in the EDO-Health Improvement Programme (EDO-HIP) across the state."

*2019 Budget Proposal: Obaseki to spend N9bn on pension, arrears, gratuity*

...entertainment park gets N500m

The Governor Godwin Obaseki-led administration in Edo State plans to sustain the regular payment of pensioners' entitlements in 2019 to demonstrate its respect for the state's senior citizens.

In the state's proposed budget for 2019, the sum of N9billion has been set aside for the payment of gratuity, pension and arrears of pensioners.

Presenting the 2019 Budget Estimates to a session of the Edo State House of Assembly in Benin City, Governor Obaseki said: We will continue to appreciate the labour of our senior citizens whose sweat built our state and its institutions. Therefore, we take the issue of pension payment as our utmost priority.

"In 2018, we have spent N8 billion in pension payment. We plan to spend another N9 billion to pay pension, gratuity as well arears owed from previous years."

Recall that following the intervention of the governor in the age-long face-off between pensioners and previous governments over arrears spanning over 20 years, the state's senior citizens have been receiving their entitlements as and when due, ending years of protest marches at Ring Road, Benin City, by the pensioners.

Obaseki also assured that other sectors of the state will receive their share of attention as provided in the 2019 Budget Proposal.

"An entertainment park that will host the creative arts, film and television productions, is being embarked upon. It is designed to tap into the fast-growing industry by harnessing the creative talent of the Edo people, attract investment and create jobs. To this end, N500 million has been set aside for the project," the governor said.

He added that later in the year, "we will hold the second edition of Edo Festival of Arts and Culture (EDOFEST) to showcase our colourful culture and the potential that lies within the tourism sector."

According to him, "The Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Diaspora Affairs is in talks with local and foreign investors, who are desirous of investing in our tourist sites.

"Top on the list of these sites are the Sokponba Resort, Kukuruku Hills and the transformation of the popular Benin Moat into a world class tourist centre.

"I wish to announce that in 2019, Edo State will serve as host to the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), for the annual National Festival for Arts and Culture (NAFEST), Nigeria's largest cultural event.

"As a people with enviable cultural heritage, the culture and tourism sector is a major plank of our administration."

*Obaseki walks BEDC MD out of his office for throwing state into darkness*

*…tells House of Reps that Edo doesn’t want a ‘failed, unserious’ DISCO*

There was mild drama at the office of the Edo State Governor, Mr. Godwin Obaseki, on Tuesday, as the governor walked the Managing Director (MD) of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), Mrs. Funke Osibodu, out of his office for failing to meet  obligations to electricity consumers in Edo and throwing the state into darkness for weeks.

This happened when the governor received members of the Federal House of Representatives Committee on Power led by Hon. Daniel Asuquo, who were in Government House, on a courtesy visit.

The governor was surprised to see the BEDC boss, whose name  was not on the list of expected guests to Government House, but embedded herself in the National Assembly delegation,  to gain access to the governor, who has been in darkness alongside millions of Edo State residents, for weeks.

Speaking to the delegation after Mrs. Osibodu had left the gathering, the governor said BEDC has continued to fail in collaborating with the state government to provide stable electricity in the state, instead the company has posed as an obstacle to meeting the goal.

"BEDC has been an obstacle all the way. They will not provide electricity and will not allow you to get alternative sources of power. The state will not allow it,” the governor said.

According to him, “As Governor of Edo State, we have lost confidence in BEDC. We don’t want them here. We are in darkness. Let us remain in darkness until we find people who are capable of delivering electricity.  This is our position.”

The governor said despite the fact that the state generates about 600 to 700 megawatts of electricity, the people are still in darkness, wondering how he is expected to explain the irony to the people, who are well aware that they produce a substantial amount of electricity in the country.

He noted that BEDC has failed to recognise that they have to be patriotic and responsible to the state and the country but instead they have been noncommittal  about  the issue of power distribution.

"To assist, we set up electricity committee across the local government areas chaired by the Deputy Governor of the state, Rt. Hon. Philip Shaibu, with BEDC as member to understand the challenge. But BEDC frustrated our resolve to finding a lasting solution to the issue of providing electricity to our people.”

Earlier, Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Power, Hon. Daniel Asuquo, said they were in the state for an oversight function on the activities of BEDC and other players in the electricity value chain.

He said Edo State consumes half of daily power supply under the BEDC, noting that the state has the highest number of consumers on the network, which makes it critical to engage with the governor and people of the state on the level of service delivery by players in the value chain.

"We are here to see how to intervene to ensure that you deliver on your electioneering promises to the people of Edo State as you are answerable to them," Hon. Asuquo said.

*Electricity supply: Edo Govt condemns failure of BEDC as firm throws state into darkness for weeks*

*…Govt seeks alternative electricity distribution company*

Following the failure of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) to provide electricity to residents of Edo State, the state government has described as “regrettable BEDC’s insensitivity to the suffering and extreme inconveniences it has caused millions of its customers across the state.”

Special Adviser to Governor Godwin Obaseki on Media and Communication Strategy, Mr Crusoe Osagie, who conveyed the state government’s position on the glaring ineptitude of BEDC in the state, said: “The state government is miffed at BEDC’s failure to deliver electricity to Edo people and for throwing the entire state into darkness.”

Osagie lamented “BEDC’s unprofessional attitude of sitting on their hands to watch their subscribers, most of whom have paid their bills in full, suffer the socio-economic consequences of their incompetence.

“Their action is most regrettable as they have not considered their customers deserving of any apology for the extreme inconveniences, they have caused Edo people and residents.”

He explained that the state government is disturbed by the poor crisis management strategy of the power distribution company and assured that the days and months of darkness inflicted on Edo people are nearing their end.

“The government, however, urges Edo people to be patient as it has taken the initiative to take its destiny in its hands by obtaining a licence for another private power company, Ossiomo Power for the generation and distribution of power, independent of Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC),” Osagie said.

The governor’s aide maintained that officials of the state government have been bombarded with torrents of complaints from residents, in every nuke and cranny of the state, about BEDC’s ineffectiveness.
