slydog: Congratulations on your recent doctorate degree. Best wishes! slydog: The postdoctoral fellowship has two-way aim/goal; one directed towards the Postdoc or fellow and the second is towards the benefit of the host. What this position means varies depending on countries and institutions. For the Postdoc: The Fellowship is crafted for the postdoc to strengthen, refine and expand the postdoc skills in specific areas of research techniques, enhancing specific analytical skills or acquiring novel skills. The overall or ultimate goal is for the fellows to develop the skill set required to pinpoint novel high impact areas of investigation and then obtain resources to pursue answers to these questions. So what are the common reasons that scientists or recent PhD graduate seek for Postdocs? There are many reasons but I will just point to few I can personally relate to. 1. For many PhD graduates, they couldn't find a satisfactory job that meets their education level. For some, they know that a postdoc (or even multiple postdocs) are necessary to eventually run their own lab. 2. For some, they lack competitive research experience during their PhDs, hence want to advance or could not publish top-quality academic papers or do not have increasingly demanding skills in the job markets. Hence, tend to enhance themselves. 3. For some, it is the formative experiences that plant the seeds for a lifetime of discovery and adding it to their CV makes them more competitive. 4. For some, to make money and to acquire new skills or to change the field of their research. For the Host: Postdoc research is usually considered important while advancing the scholarly mission of the host institution; it is expected to produce relevant publications in peer-reviewed academic journals or patents. In some countries/universities, postdoc research may lead to further formal qualifications or certification, while in other countries it does not. Particularly, in the western countries like the USA, a postdoc fellow engage in mentored research or scholarly training for the purpose of acquiring the professional skills needed to pursue a career path of his or her choosing. This position may lead to tenure for the fellow in the host institution. In most cases, the postdoc positions are paid either by the funding from the principal investigators or the host universities/labs/industries. slydog: The postdoc positions are usually advertised by the university, the website of the principal investigator, in academic media like Mendeley.com, Researchgate, Nature jobs, Jobs in UK, Harvard Postdoc Jobs etc, Some like Turkish Government offers the position yearly funded by the government to support local and international applicants, some like Canadian Universities or Czech Repub universities search for postdoc yearly as part of scholarly missions. To apply for Postdoc these days is very competitive. The applicants must possess some of these: 1. Have relevant skills that are directly close to the advertised postdoc positions. 2. Have high-level competitive skills majorly based on internationally acceptable published papers of good quality (SCI/SSCI/AHI) and suitable impact factors. 3. Demonstrate the ability to undertake the advertised project backed with verifiable previous experiences in the field of research 4. Sound statement of research that aligns with the goals and mission of the host or principal investigator. 5. You have novel and sustainable modern ideas that will warrant you to be funded So you can visit some of the above-mentioned links to search. I benefitted from the Turkish Government funded Postdoc and my research was funded for almost 15 million naira at that time and I was receiving around 500k naira monthly inclusive of publication cash award. The major issue is finding host university and having novel ideas that will warrant the host to accept you. 8 Likes 6 Shares |

antonreal: Hello sir/ma, To enter Turkey from North Cyprus the applicants either apply for entry visa, student visa or transit visas. The easiest is transit visa which last 1-7 days at most and usually 3days. After the visa limits applicants are expected to leave Turkey legally or apply for extension or residence permit if they meet the requirements. Entry visa: appears to require more documents and verifiable reasons of entry and documents. Could be issued 30 days to 1yr with certain period. Allowed to stay. Last is student visa: which follows same procedure as what you see on Turkish embassy in Nigeria. In summary, it may be easier to travel to Turkey from north Cyprus than from Nigeria. But the most important is staying and living legally will be more reasonable than other case. 1 Like |

Chynwe: Good day, In the majority of mathematics area of research, the researchers don’t need to buy any equipment or gadget or laboratory accessories to get a research done. So what will you need the research funding for during your Phd? How will the output be justified regarding the funding. These are some of the questions you should have answers to or planning to answer when you are researching for funding. Based on my experience, Items funded under maths, might include, but are not limited to, travel to research conferences and workshops, computer equipment and software, short-term academic visits. So, to access foreign funding for above listed, your CV matters a lot in terms of quality and internationally acceptable publications you have. Kindly have a look at the link, I provided below on how to apply for research funding. Have you had an acceptable SCI academic papers? How many and whic field of research you have in mind or have you searched for? 2 Likes 2 Shares |

guiddoti: Possible research on CO2 capture, Utilization, management and conversion via various streams: 1. Robust CO2 capture and photocatalytic conversion by a hybrid photocatalyst material 2. Dual function material for capture and catalytic conversion to synthetic natural gas: Gas phase reactions and performance stability 3. Techno-economic assessment for pure H2 production with CO2 capture in underwater pipelines 4. Green plant sensitized photoanode for solar water splitting (green energy production) and CO2 conversion 5. Hybrid electrochemical sensor for detection of Underwater CO2 Using Functionalized Electrode For Synthesis of Materials for CO2 capture: MOF, LDH and Silica-based materials are emerging materials for the capture and do have commercial viability. In fact in KAUST ( Saudi Arabia University), there is a group that have designed a microvolume CO2 capture and re-utilization system based MOF (Metal-organic Frameworks) and LDH (Layered double Hydroxides) and this system is suitable in both oil and cement industries. 4 Likes 1 Share |

guiddoti: Regarding phase change and reactive transport research: Due to the world demand of alternative energy and energy storage materials, I think the research may be directed towards that. You may find some of these very interesting: Increasing thermal conductivity of phase change materials based on nanocomposites for energy storage The efficient use of energy and sustainable development has become one of the urgent tasks for human beings with the rapid economic and industrial development due to the increasingly serious energy crisis and greenhouse gas emissions. Hence, the development of efficient energy storage devices and systems is essential for improving energy efficiency and reducing the gap between energy demand and energy production. Phase change materials have been widely used as efficient materials in latent heat thermal storage systems for various applications, particularly, it has been the focus for renewable energy saving especially solar energy storage. However, the poor thermal conductivity of most organic phase change materials has long been considered as one of the big obstacles hindering their practical applications. So in this research, you can synthesize various nanomaterials/nanocomposites that can act as efficient nanofillers to improve the thermal conductivity of organic phase change materials. The enhanced material will be very useful in solar air heaters, solar cells and electronic materials especially if you prepare it in film form. Reactive transport of CO2-rich fluids and other recalcitrant emissions: DOE modelling and efficiency enhancement. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

Diamond294: RESEARCH FUNDING Getting Funding is not easy but is very very possible. Applying for a research grant can be a long and painful process and there are no guarantees it will end in success. The useful tips shared below could prove just the boost you need to secure financial support. This will largely depend on your academic profile, nature of research, type of solution your research will provide, who will benefit from the research, is the research nationalistic or of international usage, how easy and practicable the research can be reproduced, does it have commercial value? The experience of the investigator, the innovation and significance of the research outputs. You can access one of the resources here: https://researcheracademy.elsevier.com/research-preparation/funding/successful-research-grant-applications-getting-right Also, you can write a grant and I can advise and mentor! ejibaba: That's a nice idea and suggestion. I am currently co-supervising Master and PhD students with some academics in Nigeria and I can attest that there are many things that need to be done for foreign-based Nigerian to find the academic back home attractive. Some of the few things that are lacking or personally I think can be or must be improved: 1. The salary of academics must be increased substantially. As far as am concerned, I earn far far far far than Nigerian Professors for now. The monthly salary of a professor must be bigger than a senator salary and PhD holder must earn far higher than Chairman or house of assembly members. 2. Academic merit systems must be established to encourage emerging and academic focus researchers 3. Academic promotions must be based on the academic output (Research, International Publications in SCI/SCI-E journals, Modern Teaching and academic mentorship)......Academic promotion in Nigeria is significantly based on a number of years even if the academic is not productive (this is backward). 4. National Research funding, Industrial and University-based funding of research should be established. 5. Employment and promotion should not be based on ethnic or tribal since everybody is Nigerian. 6. University must invest and subscribe to the major publication outlets so the staffs can have access to current publications 7. Conference funding and Publication monetary award must be encouraged and established 8. The system of supervision is very obsolete where a PhD last 6-13 years is more like craze. 9. Majority of research analyses are done abroad. Hence, investment in pieces of equipment and devices is largely needed. 10. Industrial PhD and masters need to be encouraged. You cant imagine someone earning roughly 2 mill nairas monthly or have project funds bigger than Nigerian senators with various research facilities to return to earn 350 k naira...In the end, such Professors that will start asking for sex for marks or start selling questions/handouts. ...Am just saying oooooooo! 7 Likes 3 Shares |

yak: This will depend on her interest and content of the program. So ask her what she is interested to work with, futuristic areas of research and solutions she wants to provide. With my scanty knowledge of that field “measurement and evaluation”...I believe this field is significantly based on psychology and psychoanalysis. Why not go for “Phd In educational management and statistics” or Phd in Measurements, planning and statistics”. This has elements of math combined auctural science with art and management... HisMercies123: Microbiology as we know has varied fields and majorly dealing with microorganisms. This course has high potential to generate huge income and has been well used by developed countries in food, biotech and allied industries. There are lots of microorganisms that are used in food and beverage preparation. If you can have set of equipments to grow, isolate and extract the valuables from the bacteria, this will generate recurring incomes. Particularly, In our lab, we have grown and used 3 types of microorg that of commercial value to synthesis biomagnets and also used in microbial fuel cells. For environmental Microbiology, you can look into any of the following that suit your interest considering the availability of equipment at your end: modifications of the nutrients and other conditions for optimizing the bioremediation process. Oil Biodegradation Petroleum oil is toxic and pollution of the environment by oil causes major ecological concern. Much of the oil can be eliminated by the hydrocarbon-degrading activities of microbial communities, specifically the hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria (HCB) and related microorgs. Degradation of Aromatic Compounds by Acinetobacter Aromatic compounds are found in various petrochemicals and pharmaceutical wastes. Acinetobacter strains isolated from the environment are capable of the degradation of a wide range of aromatic compounds. Analysis of Waste Biotreatment Biotreatment, the processing of wastes using living organisms, is an environmentally friendly alternative to other options. Bioreactors have been designed to overcome the various limiting factors of biotreatment processes in highly controlled systems. Bioelectricity generation and simultaneous treatment of waste You can check previous page where I have shown one of the hybrids MFC designed in my lab for electricity generation using microbes. A microbial fuel cell (MFC), or biological fuel cell, is a bio-electrochemical system that drives an electric current by using bacteria and mimicking bacterial interactions found in nature. Microbial Enzymes: Production, Purification, Isolation and Commercial Utilization Applied and Industrial microbiology uses microorganisms to produce valuable commercial products or to carry out important chemical transformations. You can read more via this link: http://www.contentextra.com/lifesciences/files/topicguides/9781447935674_LS_TG2_2.pdf Below are some of the microorg that have been used. Best wishes as you carry on your research.
