– Zenith Bank sources disclose to Sahara Reporters how Governor Fayose ran to beg the management of the bank to save him when EFCC was closing in on him – Fayose claims Zenith bank financed his election but he bank denies this claim – The bank says it handled money from the office of the National Security Adviser Fresh details have emerged on how embattled Governor Ayodele Fayose of Ekiti state, allegedly begged Zenith Bank Plc to save him when he discovered that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) was closing in on him. According to a report on Sahara Reporters, sources at Zenith bank denied financing the election of Fayose as the governor had earlier claimed. The bank however admitted it handled money from the office of the National Security Adviser. It was gathered that Governor Fayose had last week rushed to Zenith bank to beg its management not to share his bank documents with the EFCC, telling that bank to say that the constitutional immunity he enjoys prevents the bank from doing so. The report on Sahara Reporters also revealed that Fayose pleaded that Zenith bank should claim to have funded his campaign, but bank officials declined, saying it had already given its word to the EFCC to hand over his bank documents. The bank’s decision comes on the heels of its support to President Muhamamdu Buhari over his determination to recover stolen funds and also the fact that the bank’s former managing director, Godwin Emefiele, is now the Central Bank of Nigeria Governor. But according to Sahara Reporters’ sources, Fayose wasn’t taking no for an answer as the governor returned to beg the bank again to help perfect documents for one of the accounts used for the N4.7billion, but the bank refused a second time. In anger, it was gathered that Fayose threatened that he will take the bank down with him. The Zenith bank sources added that if Fayose got support any financial support from the bank, it could never have exceeded N50million as donation. According to them, the bank did not consider funding a campaign as one of its duties and was not even sure if he could win. The source told Sahara Reporters that they were surprised at the amount of money meant for him during and after Fayose’s campaign. However, the bank sources were not sure whether or not the bank filed suspicious transaction reports, given that some of the funds were never entered into the bank database. The EFCC, on Monday, June 20, froze two personal accounts of the governor and one belonging to his company, Spotless Investments, in the course of its investigations into N4.7billion Fayose allegedly received from the Office of the National Security Adviser during his election campaign in 2014. Fayose has since denied receiving any money, claiming it was Zenith Bank that majorly funded his campaign. – The House of Representatives is planning to convene a public hearing on alleged sex scandal involving its members – Nicholas Ossai, the chairman of the House Ethics Committee, has promised to thoroughly investigate the incident The House of Representatives will reportedly conduct a public hearing to discuss the sexual allegations brought against three Nigerian lawmakers by the US ambassador James F. Entwistle. The hearing is a part of the investigation initiated by the House Ethics Committee and supported the Foreign Affairs Committee. Commenting on the controversial issue Nicholas Ossai, the chairman of the ethics committee, said: “It was clearly stated when the committee was set up that we should make it transparent public hearing and the three lawmakers agreed. We’re going to do it openly so that everybody would see what we’re doing.” However, a specific date of the hearing is still unclear as well as how the general public would be engaged in the process. Recall that Mohammed Garba Gololo (APC, Bauchi), Samuel Ikon (PDP, Akwa Ibom) and Mark Gbillah (APC, Benue) were accused of attempted rape and soliciting for sex, while on their leadership training program in Ohio, the Unites States on June 9. The three accused lawmakers denied the allegations describing them as “character defamation and a calculated attempt to ridicule the National Assembly.” Meanwhile, t he Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara, has ordered an investigation into the matter. – Aisha Buhari warns Ekiti state governor over accusations he dropped against her – The president’s wife gave Fayose five-day ultimatum to drop his allegations or face legal action – Mrs. Buhari described Fayose’s allegations as “very wild and unfounded” President Muhammadu Buhari’s wife, Aisha Buhari, has written a warning letter to the Ekiti state Governor Ayo Fayose, demanding a full withdrawal of his accusations. Fayose recently said that President Buhari is not an angel and accused his wife of involvement into the Halliburton scandal. A letter that was distributed be Mrs. Buhari’s legal representatives. She said Ekiti state governor was directly responsible for the publication of the “very wild and unfounded” accusations in the media. Premium Times exclusively obtained a copy of letter, sent to Fayose through courier on June 22. In the letter, titled: “Demand for unqualified retraction of the false statement published by you in various media on the 20th of June, 2016, and subsequent dates regarding our client, Her Excellency, Mrs. Aisha Buhari the wife of President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR,” Buhari’s wife gave Ekiti governor five working days to withdraw the statement or face legal action. It reads: “Our client has referred to us statement made by you and published on the 20th of June, 2016 (and other subsequent days) concerning and pertaining to her person for necessary action. “The said statement which was caused by you and your agents to be widely circulated and published in various media platforms: print, electronic and online such as PREMIUM TIMES www.premiumtimesng.com on 20th of June, 2016, contains very wild, unfounded and false allegations and imputations against the person of our client. “Specifically, in the said statement credited to you and signed by your Chief Press Secretary, Idowu Adelusi, you, inter alia, false stated as follows: “Even the president cannot claim to be an angel. The estate he built in Abuja is known to us. His wife was indicted over the Halliburton Scandal (sic). When that American, Jeferson, was being sentenced, the President’s wife was mentioned as having wired $170,000 to Jefferson. Her name was on page 25 of the sentencing of Jefferson. We can serialise the judgement for people to see and read,” Ismaila Alasa and Mary Ekpene, who signed the letter on behalf of the law firm, said. “Take notice that unless you and your agents meet our humble demands within 5 (five) working days of the receipt of this letter, we shall take all necessary steps within the contemplation of the law to seek redress for our client.” The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has on June 20 frozen bank accounts of the Ekiti state governor. Fayose reacting to the development spread a statement which contained excerpts of court documents sourced from the United States Department of Justice Website. He stated that the president’s wife was an accomplice in the bribery scandal that landed Jefferson in jail. In 2009, Jefferson was found guilty of 11 counts of corruption and was sentenced to 13 years’ imprisonment. Later a tweet was sent from Aisha’s confirmed Twitter account on Tuesday evening looked like a response to Fayose’s accusations: “Enough is enough Fayose. A mad dog that isn’t chained. I refuse to keep quiet.” However, it was subsequently deleted and the Nigerian government has not made any comment on the development.
