ABUJA—A sixteen year Miss Edem Ekpoawan Irene, yesterday emerged the highest scorer with 310 points in the 2009/10 Universities Matriculations Examinations (UME) conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculations Board (JAMB).

Miss Edem, who hails from Cross River State, and applied to study Communications with option at the ABTI University, Yola, Adamawa State was closely followed by a 23 year Master Igugu Friday Obukohwo who scored 308 points. Obukohwo, who hails from Delta State, also applied to read Industrial Relations & Personnel Management at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and and Moses-Gombo Kuroyefa Raymond, male from Bayelsa State scored 308 marks respectively, emerging second in the test.
.

Miss Odinde Henrietta Konye, aged 18, from Delta State emerged third. She applied to study Economics at the University of Lagos (UNILAG).

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board had conducted the Universities Matriculation Examinations (UME) exams and released the result six day after, beating the records of last year, which it released two weeks after its conduct.

The Board shifted the formal date for the release of the results from Thursday last week to Tuesday (yesterday) due to Easter celebration.

Announcing the release of the results at a press conference in Abuja, Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, noted that a total of 548, 543 candidates scored 200 marks and above.

According to him, the Board recorded 23, 819 cases of examination malpractices, which he said represents 2.07% of the total number of candidates that sat for the examination. He further declared that, “this also shows reduction in the cases of malpractices when compared with last year’s figure of 2.24 %.

Prof. Ojerinde who said the Board is yet to take a decision on who to deal with those involved in the exam cheats, however, announced that a committee has been set up to look into the various cases of the malpractices with a view to come up with a measure on how to deal with the situation.

On the prisoners enrolment, Prof. Ojerinde said, “as part of the Board’s efforts to reach out and avail the citizenry with the opportunity to further their education no matter their situation, the 2009 Universities Matriculation Examination was conducted at the Ikoyi and Kaduna prisons for eligible inmates who had indicated interest in the examination.

He said a total of 46 inmates sat for the examination, which include 13 in Ikoyi and 33 in Kaduna prisons respectively.

The Register explained that a total of 667, 771 applicants who sat for the 2009 examination are male while 514, 610 candidates are female.

Prof. Ojerinde, who dispelled insinuation over the scrapping of the Boards following the creation of the proposed Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), said the Board would conduct the UTME exams expected to take off next year.

According to him, “the Boards Matriculation Examinations are not scrapped as was erroneously reported in some newspapers, rather the idea is to have a single examination for all tertiary institutions which gives candidates wider choice of institutions and this will invariable enhance their chances of securing admission into tertiary institutions”.

The general entry requirements to all the institutions, he said will be the same five credit passes at Secondary school Certificate Examination (SSCE while the entry qualification will be determined by individual institutions”.

Nigeria does and cant handle such people with intelliegence. No infrastructure to nuture such talent. I would advice that she should be shipped out of the country with immediate effect before she ends working in a bank (what a waste)

16-Year-Old Girl Tops JAMB Score
From Bukola Olatunji in Abuja, 04.15.2009

Sixteen-year-old Miss Irene Ekpoawan Edem has emerged the highest scorer in the 2009 Universities Matriculation Examination (UME), with 310 out of the 400 marks obtainable.
The native of Cross River State applied to study Communications with Options’ at the ABTI-American University of Nigeria, Yola.
Three other candidates, who, coincidentally all made the University of Lagos (UNILAG) their first choices, came bracket second with 308 marks. They are Obukohwo Friday Igugu, 23, Konye Henrietta Odinde, 18 and perhaps the oldest, Raymond Kuroyefa Moses-Gombo, 47. They applied to study Industrial Relations and Personnel Management, Economics and History and Diplomatic Studies, respectively.
The candidates topped the list of the best 15 in the examination, released in Abuja yesterday by the JAMB Registrar, Professor Dibu Ojerinde, who disclosed that the full results were now available online.
It was, however, noteworthy that none of the top 15, whose marks ranged between 298 and 310 applied to study the sciences. Three candidates each applied to study Communication, Economics, and History.
While Law, Accounting, Industrial Relations, Urban and Regional Planning, etc. had a candidate each.
Ojerinde said out of the 1, 182, 381 candidates, who applied to sit for the UME , 1,145, 961 or 96.92 per cent of them actually sat for the examination. 65 of them were visually impaired (out of the 71 who registered). 13 were inmates of Ikoyi Prisons and 33 of Kaduna Prisons, all of whom would have completed their terms by the next admission exercise.
A total of 199 candidates sat for the examination in five centres outside the country.
The six states with the highest number of applicants were [s]Imo. Anambra, Delta, Edo, Ogun and Osun, in that order, while the six with the lowest number, in descending order were Gombe, Sokoto, Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara and Yobe.
The Registrar said 548, 543 candidates scored 200 marks and above.
Another 14, 847 scored between 190 and 199; 150, 541 fell between 180 and 189 marks; 128, 063, were between 170 and 179; another 95, 055 scored between 160 and 169 marks, while 72, 196 scored less than 160 marks.
In all, Social Sciences accounted for 275, 208 or 23.28 per cent of the candidates, followed by Administration with 179, 056 (15.15 per cent), Medicine, 177, 715 (15.03 per cent); Engineering, 152, 051 (12.86); Sciences, 139, 129 (11.77 per cent) and Arts/Humanities, 83.009 (7.02 percent). Others are Law, 75, 244 (6.37 per cent); Education, 44, 346 (3.75 per cent); Environmental Studies, 22, 358 (1.89 per cent); Pharmacy, 20, 857 (1.77 per cent) and Agriculture, 13, 408 (1.14 per cent).

Last year, Social Sciences also accounted for the highest number of 249, 928 or 23.71 per cent of the candidates, followed by the Medical Sciences, 184, 210 (17.48 per cent); Administration, 160, 466 (15.22 per cent); Engineering, 157, 460 (14.94 per cent) and Sciences, 117, 905 (11.19 per cent).
Others were, Law, 68, 434 (6.49 per cent); Arts, 67, 851 (6.44 per cent); Education, 36, 590 (3.47 per cent) and Agriculture, 11, 216 (1.06 per cent).

I too am a bit suspicious of some of the results. Particularly the 23yr and 47yr old, who are likely not taking the exam for the first time. Also few of the students seem to have applied to the more competitive programs like law. Being Nigeria, would like to see their SSCE results to corroborate the story. In the past, the news agency used to run detailed profiles on top students

I have lost confidence in our education system, especially the way examinations are conducted. I dont think i can give anyone who scores highest in JAMB N5.00 because of the absence of a sound and effective system, where you can to a large extent, be sure that CANDIDATES' SCORES REPRESENT THEIR PERFORMANCE.

What do you get in a LACKING system like ours,  REWARDING (may be) WRONG PEOPLE (cheats),

Another funny issues with jamb is cancealling or witholding some candidates' results witholding any concrete PROOF whatsoever that those CANDIDATES actually cheat(d).
I cant understand how you can detect a malpractises in an OBJECTIVE test AFTER the exam,  angry(injustice)

Our education system is only GOOD (as in good) for students that know their way not those who know what they are doing.

Although their are still some BRILLIANT students who passed the exams on merit,  but the system has placed them where they BELONG.

So you only need to know your way to pass JAMB.

Often when a supposed solution was passed around at an exam center, and same was detected by JAMB officials/invigilators, all student with exact same solutions as the culprits are flagged and their results withheld (not canceled). When your result is withheld by JAMB, you should be able to contact JAMB to prove your innocence. Unfortunately, this is easier said than done.
