Power Transmission Attains New Peak Of 4,662mw by anyimontana(m): 11:55am On Jul 30, 2015
Management of Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has declared that the National Grid Transmission has recorded another peak of 4,662mw.

In a statement by the General Manager, Public Affairs, TCN, Seun Olagunju, the new peak was attained at 08.00 p.m. on Tuesday.

It would be recalled that TCN Management had announced the attainment of the previous peak transmission of 4,656mw on Wednesday, 15th July, 2015.

Power generation and transmission have been recording new peaks above 4,500mw following improvements in gas supply to the generating stations as well as equipment/infrastructure upgrade and enhanced human capacity of system operators.

TCN assures that it would continue to work at enhancing the capacity to transmit more quality power to the electricity distribution companies.

It is recalled that the Federal Government upgraded Nigeria’s electricity transmission capacity within the last couple of years.

During the runoff to the privatisation of successor generation and distribution companies created from the unbundling of the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN, the country’s transmission network was described as the weakest link in the value chain with a meager wheeling capacity of about 6,000mw and unable to convey all the generated electricity to distribution points.

At the earliest periods of government’s reform of the sector, frequent collapse of the transmission network and subsequent power blackout were recorded as a result of such weakness in the system and that prompted the government to muscle up huge funding outlay for its upgrade.

Funding has come in forms of grants, loans and investments from international and regional finance agencies such as the World Bank, African Development Bank (AfDB), and French Development Bank amongst others to the tune of $2.7bn for network expansion.

Loans such as the World Bank’s $700m, JICA’s $200m, AfDB’s $370m, $1.65m proceeds from the sale of National Integrated Power Project, NIPP, EXIM China’s $500m and contractor financed turnkey projects worth $1bn, all make up the funding outlay within TCN’s disposal.

Meanwhile, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, has announced that the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries have been successfully re-streamed after a nine-month phased rehabilitation exercise conducted by its in-house engineers and technicians.

NNPC in a statement revealed that both plants have commenced preliminary production of petroleum products after successful test-runs noting that while PHRC is ramping up its operation to about 60 percent of its 210, 000 barrels per day name plate capacity, WRPC production is projected to hit 80 percent of its installed 125, 000 bpd capacity.

The corporation said the Port Harcourt refinery is projected to boost the nation’s local refining capacity with a product yield of 5million litres of petrol per day, while Warri refinery would contribute 3.5 million litres.

Providing insight into the rehabilitation exercise, NNPC noted that it had to adopt the phased rehabilitation strategy after the Original Refinery Builders, ORB, who were initially contacted for the project came up with unfavourable terms.

NNPC stated that the nominated partners, as sole-bidders came up with humongous price offers after two years of thorough and exhaustive scope of work definition and price negotiations. The proxies were also unwilling to provide post rehabilitation performance guarantees.

The corporation added that the phased rehabilitation programme which started in October 2014 after the required funding stream was established created a 70 per cent reduction in costs, which helped in mitigating the financing challenges of refinery rehabilitation.

It said following the successful rehabilitation, attention has now moved to the 110, 000 barrels per day Kaduna Refining and Petrochemicals Company, which is billed to come on stream soon.

NNPC also disclosed that it has successfully recovered the System 2B Pipeline, which was breached last week at Arepo, Ogun State.

The corporation stated that its team of engineers, who were deployed to the scene of the incident, was able to access the pipeline after the fire was put out and commenced repair work immediately.

“We wish to announce that the vital System 2B Pipeline, which was breached at Arepo last week, has been fixed and brought back on stream.

“Pumping of products through the system commenced on Monday upon successful completion of repair work over the weekend.

“We also wish to call on all those engaged in the criminal acts of pipeline sabotage and oil theft to desist in order to avoid such horrendous deaths as was witnessed in the recent incident,” it said.

Also, the Department of Petroleum Resources, Abuja, has shut 22 filling stations for undue profiteering. Nineteen were sealed for selling above N87.00 per liter.

According to DPR, two of the affected stations were shut for diversion of petroleum products, while the remaining one was grossly under-dispensing and selling products massively in jerry cans.

The agency said the stations are to remain sealed for at least one month in addition to forfeiting their bridging claims as directed by the Federal Government.
