Soludo Fingered In Naira Notes Scandal by timbuktu1: 10:51am On Oct 18, 2009

Fresh evidence has emerged to suggest that Chukwuma Soludo, the former Central Bank governor, was being economical with the truth when he denied any knowledge of a multibillion naira contract at the centre of a growing bribery scandal involving the conversion of our currency from plain paper to a durable coated form.

We can report exclusively that the CBN, under Mr. Soludo, played "a pivotal role" in the award of the contract to Securency, an Australian firm now being investigated by its home government for paying bribes to top CBN officials amounting to nearly N1 billion.

When we first published a story of the scandal during the weekend of Oct. 3, Mr. Soludo had pooh-poohed the suggestion that the CBN was directly involved in the contract. He told another newspaper that "there could not have been a contract between the CBN and Securency, because orders for new notes were usually placed by the apex bank through the Nigerian Minting and Security Company." Under the controversial contract, Securency has supplied at least 1.9 billion pieces of the coated paper, called polymer substrate, on which four of Nigeria's bank notes are printed under Mr. Soludo's much-publicised currency reform programme.

This is how you know a country that is going nowhere. It is all about rumour / counter rumour and chaos / counter chaos.

It will be nice to post what those new evidence are.

Please do not quote anonymous sources who will not like to be mentioned as that amounts to a gossip and not evidence.

It looks like the strategy here is to exploit the fact that most people just look at headlines but do not read the whole article.

You have neither mentioned who fingered Soludo nor provided the so called fresh evidence.

mikeansy stop throwing spanners in the works. it is easy. this is a potential case of libel so soludo has a chance to shut next up once and for all. if his hands are not dirty he can sue them. very simple. afterall did gbenga daniel not sue next?

The bit in bold sums it up.

So what you call works is people making unsubstantiated claims because they know that members of the public can't be bothered to read in details.

It used to be the burden of proof falling on the acuser. Since when did it become guilty until proven innocent.

If Soludo or any other public servant for that matter begin to challenge all the fabrications by Nigerian news organisations all our courts will be filled with libel cases. This is why they ignore unsubstantiated claims like these, respond to some with their own side of the story and then suit only when necessary.

But we the members of the public have a duty to remind news organisations that they should stop reporting anything just because the story has beeen paid for.

I said this two years ago when the N20 notes came out and the cost of minting a unit note was not made public even on a website that list out countries using polymer notes and the details of their production, only Nigeria's N20 note was listed with an unknown price. And people were wondering why the man wanted to redenominate and reprint new currency a few months later. You people think Anambra governorship is contested with grains of sand.

However, I don't know why this news is coming up now when the man has shown interest in Anambra? ENEMIES!

I welcome Dr. Soludo to Politics. There is no need defending him now. He is an adult. I believe the stories have to do with anambra elections in 2010.

Thank you, that is the problem with nigeria, they accuse the media of this and that but they will never come out to defend themselves or deny any report they just wait for it to get blown over by another big news- what is wrong in denying rumours and setting the record straight? why employ spokesmen that cant speak for you

‘a story not denied within 24 hours, is believed to be true’ Bleep

Thank God we have serious minded folks still out there. Sure, rumours and more rumours is what we continue to get from all sides, but when will we know the truth? If the man is unable to stand up to defend his honor, then I see no reason why anyone, who has NO INSIDE info on what really happened ought to be trying to do it for him.
Re: Soludo Fingered In Naira Notes Scandal by Nobody: 6:29pm On Oct 18, 2009
Soludo stated clearly that based on the ordering proccess of Mints which normally is routed through Nigeria Mint Printing, there was no way a contract will exist between CBN and Securency.

Now this report is suggesting Soludo was being economical with the truth but will not publish what evidence they have seen nor will not say who said what!!!

How is what NEXT published any different from me waking tommorow morning to suggest that I have highly placed anonymous sources within NEXT who will not like to be mentioned confirming to me that they decide what news to publish based on who bribes them more

The only way any news or story should be taken seriously if there is any new evidence.

Of course any fool can set up a website or plant anything on the newspaper, what makes the difference is if you provide evidence.

And somehow folks on Nairaland are suggesting that Soludo's pre-ocupation should be responding to unsubtantiated rumours. If the man is not busier than that I will not support him for an elective position.

Lying in Nigeria is more dangerous than corruption? Give me a break! The reason we have liars is because the so-called good guys NEVER seem to stand up against the lies with solid evidence to clear their names. For all we know this man could be one of the liars and their could be some truth in all this. If one side is doing all the lying, why does it seem the other side has no interest in revealing the truth to the public?

Initially, I thought Next was a great relief to the nonsense that the Nigerian media is made of. Of recent, I've realized that they are even worse off than the others.
Please ,everybody knows that this useless story is targeted at tarnishing Soludo's image to scuttle his Governorship bid.
The story sef no dey even gain ground!!

Alleged polymer notes scam: EFCC probes Soludo

Tribune

FORMER governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Professor Chukwuma Soludo, who is also the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the February 6, 2010 election in Anambra State, is facing a probe by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over the handling of N20 polymer notes contract in 2006.

Soludo is already facing court cases over the manner in which he emerged the candidate of the PDP in the 2010 election, with one of the candidates already securing an injunction to bar him from parading himself as a candidate.

But apart from the battle for Anambra, the Nigerian Tribune gathered that the presidency had given the nod to the EFCC to commence investigations into the alleged fraud over the printing of the N20 polymer notes in 2006. The news broke recently that Australian authorities were probing Securency, a firm which won the printing of the Nigerian naira notes in 2006 for Euro 59.88 per 1,000 notes.

It was gathered that President Umaru Yar’Adua was disturbed last week, when the National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Vincent Ogbulafor, and some members of the National Working Committee (NWC) visited him over the Anambra saga.

After the PDP NWC members briefed him on the unfolding situation, the president was said to have expressed concern that the PDP leaders had led the party into a quagmire over the Soludo matter.

It was gathered that some initial reports on the polymer notes saga had reached the president before the visit and had been referred to the EFCC.

A Presidency official said that Professor Soludo would soon be questioned over the deal. Shortly after the Awka high court granted injunction against the ex-CBN governor, a top PDP member said: “That is not the last; we learnt the EFCC is coming for him.

“It was on the basis of intelligence reports available that the president asked the party’s leaders to ensure the process leading to the primaries was transparent, while not being prejudicial to the innocence of the former CBN boss in all allegations. But the process seemed to have been fluffed and the party is battling with the aftermath. That the polymer notes scandal is also coming up now is seen as a distraction and the president is of the view that the candidate that would lead his party to victory should be able to concentrate on campaigns,” a source close to the Presidency said at the weekend.

tell me any nigerian that worked peacefully under obj and pdp and i will make you believe he or she is a first class criminal.
no matter what his salaries were, soludo could not have saved up to what he has so far spent running for anambra gubernitorial seat under pdp.
by their fruits we shall know them.
anyone here defending soludo is either doing so ignorantly or out of foolishness.
no nigerian leader is a criminal yet nothing is well with the country.
we are really doomed on the idiots we have as elites.
blind men leading blind men.
