According to Vanguard, The Federal Government has announced plans for the commencement of freight operations on the Lagos-Kano rail line starting in June 2024. This significant development was revealed by the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC), contractors for the project, who confirmed the connection of the line to Zawaciki Dala Dry Port in Kano, a vital commercial hub.



The disclosure came during an on-the-spot inspection of the project site in Kano State by the Minister of Transportation, Senator Sa’id Alkali. Senator Alkali emphasized that the initiation of freight operations would not only extend the lifespan of the nation's highways but also contribute to reducing fatalities from auto accidents.

Expressing satisfaction with the progress of work on the Kano-Maradi standard gauge rail corridor, the Minister noted marked improvement since his previous inspection visit. He also revealed plans to segment the project for more efficient and timely completion.

During the inspection, Senator Alkali visited various sites along the rail corridor, including Kaduna-Kano and Dala Inland Dry Port in Kano, as well as Kano-Maradi, Kazaure, Dambata, and Daura, where he inspected the Federal University of Transportation.

Explaining the segmentation of the project, Senator Alkali outlined the proposed timeline for different sections, aiming for completion by designated years. He highlighted the importance of the freight corridor in reducing business costs, alleviating road traffic accidents, preserving highways, and stimulating GDP growth.

The upcoming commencement of freight operations on the Lagos-Kano rail line marks a significant milestone in Nigeria's transportation infrastructure development, promising increased efficiency and economic growth.
