Poor services: Reps to probe telecommunications companies

Written by Jacob Segun Olatunji and Kolawole Daniel, Abuja Friday, 15 July 2011

THE House of Representatives, on Thursday, set the machinery in motion to probe the unsatisfactory services being provided by the telecommunications operators in Nigeria.

To this end, the House resolved that its Committee on Communications, when constituted, should probe the activities of the telecommunications companies and report back to the House for appropriate legislative action.

The resolution was sequel to a motion sponsored by Honourable Eddie Mbadiwe representing Imo State on the ticket of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), saying that “the services of the current mobile providers are irregular, epileptic, irritating, expensive and sometimes frustrating, certainly not up to the speed to drive the economy of Nigeria.”

According to him, “telecommunications tariffs have crashed globally, but charges in Nigeria have remained high and, in some cases, rates charged to Nigerians by the companies are on the high side, as compared with charges in neighbouring African countries.”

Supporting the motion, Honourable Zakari Mohammed from Kwara State, on the ticket of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), said “Nigeria suffers a great deal, it is only in Nigeria that you have network problem and it is the duty of this House to ensure that Nigerians should have value for their money.”

In the same vein, Honourable Mohammed Onawo from Nassarawa State and Honourable Onyewuchi Ezenwa from Imo State urged the House to be more concerned about strengthening Nigeria Communication Commission (NCC) and Consumer Protection Council (CPC), so that they would rise up to the challenges of ensuring that Nigerians got better services from the operators.

While decrying the poor services by the telecommunication companies, Hono-urable Razak Osagie blamed the CPC and other regulating agency for failing in their duties to protect Nigerians from exploitation

Someone is finally thinking about Nigerians and the common masses. But then, they wouldn't have been concerned if they were not affected directly. Either way, what we need is a total crash of call tariff.

Calling for 1 Naira for instance will make alot of sense and paying 1,000 or 500 Naira for Starcomms, MTN, Multilinks and the other networks for 24 hours browsing will make a whole lot of sense and make the internet accessible to the common man on the street and the folks back in the village.

These telecomms companies have been bleeding Nigerians dry ever since they got off the airplanes and invaded Nigeria.

This is a very Good development. It's high time the government looked into this problem. Hope the telecommunications companies will not be able to bribe their way out of this
Re: Poor Services: Reps To Probe Telecommunications Companies by ebere1712: 2:01am On Jul 15, 2011
They should first of all tell Nitel that charges exobitantly for SAT1 CONNECTION TO REDUCE THEIR FEES. That should be the first line of action because that is where the government controls. Those other companies are private and should not be told how much to sell their products. If you dont like their services move on or better still plan on running your own ISP.
Re: Poor Services: Reps To Probe Telecommunications Companies by Egwuda33: 2:51am On Jul 15, 2011

Re: Poor Services: Reps To Probe Telecommunications Companies by sley4life(m): 2:57am On Jul 15, 2011
Probe them if found guilty sanction them HEAVILY. MTN would be biggest culprit. I also want them to look into Multilinks cos they have folded up without letting customers aware. The Law makers can even send EFCC to look into them all and let the law prosecute them

Probe my bottom. Anybody that allows himself to be decieved by this was either not here for the last Assembly or has a short memory.

The question we need to ask is what happened to all the previous probes our impotent NA has ever conducted.

I'll tell you:
1. They constitute a probe committee whose job is to collect travel allowances travelling all over the country looking at things they know absolutely zero about.
2. They start soliciting and receiving bribes from the affected companies.
3. Zero report, nobody gets punished.
4. If we are lucky the EFCC will start an endless case of corruption against members of the probe panel - 4 years hence, while they enjoy their carefully orchestrated looting.

Remember you heard it here first - it is a prophecy.

Many Nigerians can be deceiced easily, If mtn gives them money , send them to abroad for sight seeing , when they come back , the matter will just die down quietly.
I will not be carried away.

I hope the members are serious with their threats otherwise, we should hold them guilty, should they fail to do it. This will certainly bring sanity to the telecommunication sector and address the epileptic services being rendere by all these thieving network providers. It is a welcome development if carried out and Nigerians will heave a sigh of relief.

Re: Poor Services: Reps To Probe Telecommunications Companies by ziccoit: 7:43am On Jul 15, 2011
Dora Akunyili, when she was the minister of info, said similar thing. She even gave them 3 month ultimatum to crash their tariff to something like 5 naira/min. That was when she started losing the respect I had for her. What do we have today? Nothing happened. Likewise now, nothing go sele. Nigerians are born to suffer. Just prepare your mind for the worst so that when it comes it meets you fully prepared.

Thank You Jare, We really do have a short memory in this country called naija, (apologies to people like you and other likemind who don't), they must have actually consult the last assembly and asked them where can we start from as per where to make them feel as if they are doing something and at the same time get something underground, what are they going to come out with, ? get thier palm greased, take foreign trip to SA, Bairain, India, UK, to see how Telecoms are being run out there right, and at the end of the day they will come out and tell us that we don't really have the Infrastructure so the high cost we still have to bear it, cause we don't have Basic Infrastructure, i.e Electricity, Security, et all, wild goose chase

I don't think so. The last one they asked MTN to pay to every single one of their subscribers N150 or something like that. I received mine so i remember very well.

This is a very good move though it seems to be coming late. I hope action will be matchd with words and not just strategy to attract undue attention from communication companies.

This is a wild goose chase. It is hopelessly pursued considering the corrupt tendencies of our so called probe panelists. In the time past, no panel has ever come up with findings and recommendations aimed at prosecuting errant persons.

These guys in the house wants to be heard that they have occupied the house finally.

Nothing meaningful will come from this present administration. We need TOTAL CHANGE [Revolution]

Nigerians are so mumu that they praise just anything. What's good move about this? We have been paying taxes to this government yet our brothers are killed daily in the North; we even pay PHCN bills yet we don't have light; we are among the top oil producers in the world yet our infrastructures are nothing to write home about. How many of our graduates have job at all and those that have, how many of such jobs are befitting? Why can't this lazy owls probe that?

Rubbish! the only way to crash down GSM prices is to REVIVE NITEL! They know that but they wont do it because some people somewhere are also benefiting from the high tariff.
