Powassan virus is a rare but serious tick-borne infection that is becoming noted for the severe neurological conditions it causes. It belongs to the Flavivirus family which also hosts other widespread pathogens for instance Zika and West Nile. Contrary to Lyme disease which is a result of bacterial infection; Powassan is a virus causing encephalitis or meningitis.

Transmission and Risk Factors

Ticks get infected with Powassan after they feed on animals that are infected like rodents or deer. When an infected tick bites a person, the virus can be passed through its saliva. In contrast to Lyme disease where transmission often requires prolonged attachment periods for several hours up until day even weeks sometimes months depending on various factors such as climate conditions etc. with powassan within minutes after being bitten by a tick, one can get sick right away.

The risk of getting infected with the Powassan virus is highest during late spring through early summer when these blood-sucking parasites are most active biting people outdoors who come into contact with their habitats like forests or grassy areas especially those engaging themselves frequently in outdoor activities like hiking camping picnicking among others so forth which expose them directly towards these tiny creatures’ host-seeking behaviours thus making individuals involved more susceptible due higher likelihoods associated thereof.

Diagnosis and Treatment
Seeing that Powassan virus symptoms can be the same as those for other diseases including Lyme and common colds, it is difficult to easily discover an infected person. Tests at the laboratory include blood tests and cerebrospinal fluid analysis which are meant to identify whether there are viruses present.
